Dail crowned McDonald’s Kathorus Most Brilliant Kid Lebo Mosolodi lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za The third edition of the McDonald’s Kathorus Most Brilliant Kid competition set a new benchmark with 21 contestants giving their all to reach the competition’s final stage as judges remained firm in their decisions. The 2013 overall competition winner is Nompumelelo Dail, a grade 7 learner from Thembimfundo Primary School in Vosloorus. Dail won a McDonald’s one-year school bursary valued at R10 000, a smart phone and a goodie bag. He said, “It was the first time I took part in such a cut-throat competition and winning it was a bonus. All the participants did their best because it was not easy. My long-term goal is to pursue a career as a medical doctor.” Nompumelelo’s uncle, Mpumelelo Dail applauded his niece’s achievement. “She must take the experience gained during the competition phases with her as she moves forward in life. Competition was tough and it could have gone either way as the three finalists pulled out all the stops,” said Mpumelelo. Dail’s teacher from Thembimfundo Primary School, Kenneth Manyere described their star performer as a brilliant kid and said the school is proud of her achievement. Manyere said Dail’s victory laid a solid foundation for their
school as they prepare to take part in various competitions in the near future. The event founder, Portia Nondo congratulated all the contestants on the work well done during the preparation stages. She also commended the team of judges for the work done by them throughout the competition. Department of Education representative, Pinkie Mokgosi reminded the parents that it takes a village to raise a child. She said the competition was a learning curve to fellow teachers and hopefully next time children will be fully prepared. The other winners of the competition were: the runner-up Tebogo Ngwenya, a grade 7 learner from Lungisani Primary School in Katlehong, won a laptop; and the second runner-up Katlego Mabaso, a grade 5 learner from Phumula Gardens in Phumula, won a desktop computer. Families of the top three learners all won shopping vouchers to be used at the Chris Hani Mall. Number one educator won R1000 and an iPad, the first runner-up teacher won R1000 and the second runner-up teacher also won R1000. The competition’s top 20 finalists won goodie bags filled with educational items. All prizes were sponsored by McDonald’s and Chris Hani Mall.
