Missing child found in Brackendowns Charity Moyo

charity@tametimes.co.za Palesa Swanpoel (9) went missing from her house in Peterson Street, Eden Park in the early hours of the morning, around 3:00. She was found the same day, around 10:30 in Brackendowns, Alberton, still alive and having been done no physical harm. Rochelle Swanpoel, the mother, said Palesa enjoyed watching television, especially at night and early in the morning before she goes to school. “I woke up in the morning around 3:00 and she was awake. l asked her to fetch water for me, as l had sinus problem. I went back to sleep and when l woke up around 5:00 l checked for her in the sitting room, where she usually watches television, and she was nowhere to be found. The main house door was closed but unlocked and we started searching for her all around our area but we could not find her. She left the house wearing a top and a gown and shoes,” said Swanpoel. The police were informed of the missing girl; the dog unit police force, the police helicopter and members of the community joined the search Rochelle Swanpoel is crying and hugging her daughter Palesa when she was around the area and the surroundings open bought home alive by Brackendowns police officers. *Photo taken by Charity spaces and veld. The child was not found and Moyo.

the police also informed the nearest police stations of the missing child. Captain Mega Ndobe, communications officer of Katlehong Police Station said at around 10:30, while busy conducting a search, they received a phone call from the Brackendowns Police Station that the child was found in their area. “It is alleged that a domestic worker saw the child in Brackendowns walking with three unknown males, wearing the same clothes that she left home with. The domestic worker alleges that she also saw the child for the second time now with no gown but wearing a pink tracksuit trouser. She said the child was alone crying and screaming for help. The child told the domestic worker that she does not know the three men that she saw her with and that she is lost and needs to go home to her parents. The domestic worker then informed the police. The child was taken to her parents first and afterwards for medical check-up. It was confirmed that nothing physically harmful has been done to her. She is fine but traumatised in that she can’t recall what really happened,” said Captain Ndobe. Rochelle Swanpoel was happy to see her daughter alive and she is very concerned about what led to her daughter’s disappearance.

Ekurhuleni’s new business hub brings small and big business under one roof Lebo Mosolodi

lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za

How do you create an inclusive and prosperous society in the face of persistent challenges of high unemployment, unequal society and slow economic growth? City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the City has recently provided answers to these questions facing many cities in the country when it unveils a onestop business facilitation facility at the corner of Voortrekker and Monument Streets in Kempton Park. “Aspiring entrepreneurs will now have an opportunity to receive a range of services from a single place, saving time and money. These include business registration, training, planning tools/services, mentorship and coaching, incubation, marketing, access to finance and business linkages. The business network is aimed at bringing a broad range of small business development services under one roof,” said Gadebe. He said the Business Network facility will provide a one-stop-shop for prospective investors and developers by providing a tracking and facilitation service for strategic investment projects. Gadebe said they have partnered with Ekurhuleni Peermont

Chamber of Commerce Trust (EPCoCT). The centre is seen as a key vehicle for implementing the City’s broader small and medium enterprise development strategy and seamless investment facilitation programme. “The multi-agency will also focus on attracting big players in business to invest in the City, a move that is set to inject billions per annum. This development will translate to increased domestic and foreign direct investment into the City, drive economic growth and bring assault to the city’s 28.8 percent unemployment rate, by creating sustainable job opportunities,” said Gadebe. He said the business facilitation network facility boasts an investment and development application front office, which caters for all major and strategic investment and development applications to be processed through an electronic document management system. “This will provide an improved turnaround time for decision-making around investments and development proposals as wells as expedite the interface with critical departments such as Water and Sanitation, Energy, Roads and Stormwater as well as the Development Facilitation Committee,” concluded Gadebe.

Alberton Child Welfare: a safe haven for children Amy-Mae Campbell

amymae.campbell@tametimes.co.za

Alberton Child Welfare is a non-profit organisation (NGO) that specialises in the protection of children. It started in 1940 as a charity initiative run by volunteer social workers, and in 1966 it was endorsed by the National Social Development Department as an accredited NGO. Last year the centre assisted 1000 children from various family backgrounds, such as homes afflicted by sexual abuse, family violence, neglect or who are orphans, to find safer homes. This year they wish to continue helping families, but with the help of the community. Alberton Child Welfare is a temporary home for children between the ages of one and 12, who come from broken homes. The centre’s aim is early intervention in hostile family environments, where they temporarily remove the children and, with a court instruction, return them once the parent or guardian has agreed to improve the circumstances at home. In some cases, however, the perpetrator is part of the family and the child or the perpetrator has to be removed permanently. According to the Director of Alberton Child Welfare, Elmarie Kennedy, many of their children therefore need to be placed in foster care, but foster homes are often fully occupied and the centre cannot accommodate more than 20 children conveniently at a time. According to Kennedy, the solution is to find a larger facility that can accommodate more children during this transition period.

Currently, the centre has a property in Phenduka section (Bambanani Crèche) in Thokoza that is big enough, but it needs to be upgraded and renovated. The windows and the roof need to be repaired, the doors need to be replaced and certain areas on the property need to be paved evenly, as there are currently uneven, cracked areas that are hazardous for little ones. Kennedy kindly asks that if there is anyone that knows a landscaper that might be willing to help them with the property, it will be greatly appreciated. They are also always grateful for donations in the form of nappies, baby

formula, school bags or school stationery, or even tin food to store. If there is anyone who is interested in helping Alberton Child Welfare to materialise their goals, or who would like

to make a donation, contact the centre on 011 907 3004/5 for more information. There are many children out there who can benefit greatly from even just a single donation; every little bit helps.

High schools urged to register Learners to debate on HIV for debating league Charity Moyo and teenage pregnancy charity@tametimes.co.za

Ekurhuleni high schools are encouraged to register for the 2014 Solid Foundation Debating League. The registration was opened on 3 February and is set to close on 20 March. The league will commence on 3 May and end on 25 May with the finals. This year the Solid Foundation Debating League is targeting 100 high schools from all over the Ekurhuleni metro. Sithembiso Mdlalose, the Tournament Director said that they have partnered with the Wits Debating Union to provide a top quality tournament compared to last year. “The schools that did not receive invitations and application forms from the Department of Education in the Ekurhuleni region, but they can get them through contacting our organisation representatives. The league invites 5 speakers to the round robin debates. It can be a combination of the juniors and seniors (Grade 7-12) debaters. However, if a school has two separate teams the juniors and seniors should inform the

league representatives in advance. This is because seniors are allocated 8 minutes for speeches, with 4 minute response speeches. The junior’s speeches are 7 minutes with 3 minute response speeches.” The debaters are required to wear their school uniforms during the league. There will be four prepared motions for the entire weekend. Schools need to be accepted in the tournament via registration in order to receive the prepared motions. Each school is required to provide a person willing to function as an adjudicator for their school, for which training will be provided. He added that they are appealing for assistance in terms of running the league. Mdlalose said people can sponsor any form of donation, such as awards to be presented to the winners, transport, printing, funds and food. For more information regarding the debating league contact Sithembiso Mdlalose at 084 902 3013 or e-mail: Sithembiso.tobias@gmail.com.

Charity Moyo charity@tametimes.co.za In a bid to turn the tide of infections and unwanted pregnancies amongst the youth, the City of Ekurhuleni provides a platform for teens to educate each other through the High School public speaking competition to be held at the Springs Civic Centre on Friday 14 February from 10:00 to 15:00. Knockout stages began on 6 February, where learners from every corner of the City debated their points under the topic, “Striving towards Zero HIV, TB, STI and unwanted pregnancy is a shared responsibility”. The finals are to be held on Friday. “The month of February is a reproductive

health awareness month and as the City of Ekurhuleni, we have chosen to observe the month through hosting a high schools debate. Furthermore, Friday is Valentine’s Day and keeping our youth’s minds preoccupied with research will make them more aware of risks associated with being sexually active at an early age,” says Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe. Research by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that youth aged between 15 to 24 years make up just over one quarter of the sexually active population, but account for half of the 20 million new sexually transmitted infections.

72 Thokoza Progressive Youth students graduated The Thokoza Progressive Youth graduation ceremony was held on February 1 at Youth Centre Hall in Thokoza. There were 72 students who graduated from the end-user computer programme on the day. “We had two top performing students namely Sifiso Maseko and Lehlohonolo Mohalane who have graduated from this computer end user programme. “This is the beginning of their careers. They should use the experience gained during the training and applied it at workplace,” said Thokoza Progressive Youth Chief Operation

Officer Mosses Tlemo. The event guest speakers were Sifiso Khoza from Sifiso Khoza Professional Accountants and the idols finalist Tshidi Tenyane. Speaking to the newly graduates Sifiso Khoza cited that youngsters of today are living during a time where the economy is experiencing downwards spiral. He said there are lesser job opportunities available on the market. “However, youngsters can become entrepreneurs and start their own business. It is possible for a black child today to become successful in business or academically,” concluded Tlemo.

Impossible Pie

This week we celebrate Valentine’s Day and there are many ways of appreciating and showing your loved ones that you care, instead of buying them expensive gifts. We encourage people to try and be unique by spoiling their Valentine’s date with a home

cooked meal. The Impossible Pie is a sweet dish that appeals to such occasions. All the ingredients are mixed together and poured into a pie tin, and when it cooks it forms its own crust with filling. It has a delicious coconut and vanilla taste.

Ingredients:

2 cups milk 1 cup shredded coconut 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup cake wheat flour 8 Tablespoon butter ¾ cup sugar ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

The Sabelani Life Skills Project recently reopened the Abi Nale and Greenfield Primary School libraries as part of helping the learners to improve their reading and spelling skills. The project started late last year and it will soon be expanding across Kathorus area. According to Sylvester Tshabalala, the project coordinator, initially the project distributed food parcels to HIV/Aids orphans but has since grew to become an educational project. “We decided to expose young learners to books at early stages of their lives. We want youngsters to learn the importance of respecting books from a young age,” said Tshabalala. He said they educate the children about the rules involved in borrowing and returning library books. “We have reading clubs in both schools we are working with. Our objective is to erase the reading gap and help to build learners’ vocabulary at a young age. At the end of each trimester learners are requested to write a letter to the author of the book explaining in detail what they have read,” explained Tshabalala. He urged communities to donate books that would be helpful to the learners. Tshabalala promised that before the end of this year they will add another two primary schools in their project. For more information contact Sylvester Tshabalala at 082 585 4848.

Method:

1) Put milk, coconut, eggs, vanilla, flour, butter and sugar in blender and mix well. 2) Pour the mixture into a greased and floured pie plate. Sprinkle nutmeg on top. 3) Bake at 175°C for 45 minutes and serve. For those who are interested to learn how to cook and are looking for a catering company to help with their functions’ cooking, baking, catering, cake decorations, flower arranging, fruit and nut baskets and draping should contact Ubuntu Creative School at 074 841 2788 / 079 652 4792 / 011 054 0516. Help find the deceased boy’s father Charity Moyo

Vosloorus police detectives are looking for Bongani Dladla, who is believed to be in his late 30s, for question regarding the murder of his son, who was found dead and dumped in a house in Hlongwane section, Katlehong on 17 August 2013. The boy was found with bruises, his body burnt and with other signs of abuse. Captain Piet Rossouw, communications officer of Vosloorus Police Station said, “We are appealing to people with information regarding Bongani Dladla’s whereabouts to contact the police. We believe that he might be around Ekurhuleni. He does not have an ID, but we believe that he is in his late 30s. We also believe that he will help us with information that will lead us to apprehend the suspect who is involved in the killing of his son.” The story of the boy appeared last year on the front page of tame TIMES with the identikit of the deceased. The mother of the child was identified and arrested for child neglect and the charges were later withdrawn by the court. It is alleged that the deceased was staying with his father and stepmother at a Thokoza hostel. The biological mother of the deceased alleges that she took the boy to stay with his father because she was unable to take care of him. She claims that she wanted to see the boy and was told on 12 November 2013 that the child went missing. According to police

investigations, a friend of the boy’s father opened a false missing child case at Thokoza Police Station on 11 October. The man was arrested and charged with perjury. The police battled to find photographs of the deceased’s father, until they met a friend who gave it to them. Anyone with any information on Dladla’s whereabouts can contact either Warrant Officer Polane Mokadi at 083 551 5057 or Constable John Lekalakala at 072 623 1447.

Let’s love one another Back to School made fun with Jet People have different ways to show affection to the people they love. In some relationships people show their partners love on Valentine’s Day only, while others express love for the whole month of February. For others still, every day is Valentine’s Day. In the Bible it says it is very important to love, as love comes from God. It further says we should love people unconditionally, and love our neighbours as we love ourselves. The following verses emphasises the importance of love: John 3:16, Matthew 22:37-39, 1 Corinthians 13:4-1, and John 4:16. It is very important to love and be loved. Happy Valentine’s Day and God bless you all.

Mayor launches R101 million community development project “I remain confident that more jobs are going to be created by this programme,” ~ Gungubele concludes. Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor, Clr Mondli Gungubele recently launched the R101 million Lungile Mstshali Community Development Project in Germiston. The project, which is the first of its kind, will see each ward in the city receiving R1 million for the community to spend in developmental projects of their choice. Speaking at the launch, Gungubele, who pronounced the intervention during the State of the City Address last year, said the time had come for communities to get actively involved in the development of their communities. “The Lungile Mtshali Community Development Project is a wardbased project aimed at creating jobs and fighting poverty in the region,” explains Gungubele adding that such projects are pivotal for a municipality that has an unemployment rate of 28.8% - 40%, of which are young people. “This can also be viewed as the city’s intervention to build an active and responsive citizenry in our efforts to fast-track service delivery in the region.” The mayor says people must not be misled to think that this is the entire budget for community and infrastructure development in the city, as the metro will continue delivering and broadening services to communities with its annual budget of R30 billion. The Lungile Mtshali Community Development Project has created more than 3 000 jobs in the region. Projects will be centred around energy efficiency, water and sanitation, wetlands rehabilitation and waste management, greening and landscaping. “Some people may think that the amount is not enough. However, for us it is not about the money but the intervention of building active and responsive citizenry who will be able to deal with the developmental issues of their areas, while at the same time addressing the scourge of poverty. This project allows our people to get directly involved in the upkeep of their areas and learn critical skills that will take them off the streets in the future,” Gungubele continues, adding that the city will continue allocating the R1 million per ward for the next three financial years starting this year. Qualifying projects are intended to serve as a catalyst for skills growth, poverty alleviation, job creation and urban renewal, says the mayor. Lungile Mtshali is a former councilor of Ekurhuleni who passed on after a short illness in 2010. At the time she was a member of the mayoral committee for finance. She was known to be a servant of the people who was always at the forefront of the community’s needs. Just before she passed, looking at poverty levels in the city, Mtshali had initiated a community development project known as the R1 million per ward, which was later officially named by the City of Ekurhuleni as the Lungile Mtshali Developmental Project – in her honour.

People urged to collect deceased’s bodies Charity Moyo

Natalspruit Hospital is appealing to the people to claim the bodies of their deceased loved ones who have passed away at the hospital. Nkosiyethu Mazibuko, communications officer of Natalspruit Hospital said, “We are once again requesting people who have patients who passed away at Natalspruit Hospital to come forward and collect

their bodies. We also urged the people to work with us as some of the bodies have been at the hospital mortuary for a long time. On the failure to collect or claim the bodies, they will be buried as paupers. If the deceased is buried as a pauper it will be difficult for their graves to be identified when the family needs it. We do not have enough places at the

hospital mortuary to accommodate the deceased bodies that are not being collected.” The following are the bodies of people waiting to be claimed at Natalspruit Hospital. We include the hospital number, patient name, gender and age for easy identification by family or relatives:

Lebo Mosolodi lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za The Thokoza Super Kings Cricket Club played against Katlehong Cricket Club at Eden Park Sports Complex recently. Their match started at 9:30 and was dubbed the battle for Kathorus supremacy, which lived up to the expectations of cricket fans. “Our opponents batted first and managed to make 105 runs. My team displayed great commitment when they replied by making 135 runs and won the first innings,” said Thokoza Super Kings player/coach Kagiso Kgoele. In the second innings Katlehong Cricket Club made 69 runs and their opponents responded with 12. The match was stopped due to time and bad light. “It was a good performance by my team,

Thokoza Superkings Cricket Club batsmen Simon Sikwenyane.

which is attributed to the good midweek preparations. We won the first innings and drew in the second innings. Joseph Legodi was our star performer. He bowled 14 overs and got four wickets for only 30 runs from our opponents in both innings. Another great performer on the day was Charlie Nkabinde. He made 31 runs out of 78 balls,” said Kgoele. Katlehong Cricket Club batsman Siphiwe Tshabalala said they played against a good team and their opponents were well prepared. “Lack of planning from our side contributed to our downfall. We hope to rectify that mistake in our next match against Delsos Cricket Club at Cecil Payne Cricket Facility in Johannesburg on 16 February,” said Tshabalala. Thokoza Super Kings Cricket Club’s next match will be against Edenglen Cricket Club at Eden Park Sports Complex on 16 February.

Colour Blocking Football Club midfielder (purple and gold outfit) launches an attack against Dikole Killers in (black and gold outfit). The inaugural Kick Off Against Gender Based Violence Soccer Tournament held at Vosloorus Congo Soccer Grounds was won by Colour Blocking Football Club. Four Kathorus soccer teams competed in the soccer tournament, namely Mdavo, Sunrise United, Dikole Killers and Colour Blocking Football Club. In the first semi-final, Mdavo FC played against Sunrise United FC. Sunrise United FC proceeded to the finals by winning 1-0 against their opponents. In the second semi-finals, Dikole Killers was pitted against Colour Blockings FC. The stylish Colour Blocking team thrashed their opponents 3-0 and marched to the finals. Colour Blocking walloped their opponents 2-0 in the finals. The stylish Colour Blocking team won the trophy, gold medals and walked home R1200 richer. Colour Blocking coach Siya Mthembu was impressed about the overall performance of his team. They have played 180 minutes of soccer without conceding a single goal, but

managed to score five goals against their opponents. “Our star performer on the day was Mphilisi Selepe. He scored three goals in both matches, coming from the midfield position. We would like to urge local soccer teams to participate in the second edition of this football tournament to take place during Easter Holidays on the very same soccer grounds. Our team will definitely be defending their crown,” said Mthembu. The event organiser Tshepo Matoku was pleased about the standard of soccer displayed by all teams participating in the soccer tourney. He said there are limited soccer tournaments taking place in Kathorus, hence they have come up with this new soccer initiative. “There is lot of hidden talent that was showcased during this inaugural tournament. We urge soccer scouts to attend our next soccer tournament to witness hidden talent unfold in this part of Ekurhuleni,” concluded Matoku.
