Intensifying battle against drug addictions Lebo Mosolodi lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za Drug addiction remains a major stumbling block which hinders the society’s progress, ravages dreams and leaves repercussions which could be passed to generations to come. This has resulted in the Thokoza based Alok Tele Centre hosting a substance abuse workshop at the Thokoza Auditorium recently. The workshop aimed at eradicating the impact of drug addiction in their neighbourhood. Speaking to tame TIMES, Alok Tele Centre Information officer Dikeledi Mashego said the workshop objective is to create an awareness of drug addiction. “In most cases the unsuspecting youth are targeted by drug dealers in order to sell drugs for them. They end up being drug addicts and commit petty crimes which has enormous consequences. Some end up behind bars which hinder them from pursuing their career dreams. The workshop also reminds the youth that there are various sports activities that they can partake in as an alternative.” Tsohang Youth Project senior facilitator,

Kate Satekge said the society is ignorant even though they have information about the dangers of drug addiction. “Youth should be reminded that they’re supposed to take the leadership roles of this country in the near future and that would not be accomplished if they indulge in drugs. Most of the youth end up dead or in prison which places the future of this country in jeopardy. Today we are here to remind them that they should empower themselves with the information and say no to drugs. They should start changing their behaviour and start living a productive lifestyle,” said Satekge. Joyce Sithole (27), workshop participant said the program is an eye opener because they are talking to the youth about the dangers of drug addiction. However, she said the organisers should start seeking permanent solutions by implementing the anti-drugs plan. “Children should be kept busy and parent’s involvement in their lives is essential. Parents should not leave the responsibility of sports development of their children solely in the hands of their sports coordinators but start taking an active role as well,” concluded Sithole.

The Thokoza Alok Tele Centre, Tsohang Youth Project representatives and the workshop participants are happy about the outcomes of the anti drugs workshop.

HPV vaccinations launched in SA schools Amy-Mae Campbell

amymae.campbell@tametimes.co.za

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer among women in South Africa. There is still no real cure for cancer, but one can be vaccinated against the HPV and lower one’s risk of cervical cancer. The South African government has decided to take action against this escalating disease and launched an HPV vaccination campaign across South Africa on Wednesday 12 March. Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and the Deputy Minister of Basic Education Mr Enver Surty led the official launch at a national event that was held in the Free State last week. The campaign aims to give government primary school girls across South Africa access to the HPV vaccination, in order to lower their risk of developing cervical cancer later in life. According to Dr Ivan Campbell, General Practitioner at the Netcare Clinton Hospital, the HPV is a sexually transmitted disease. The virus forms warts and has many different strands, which makes it difficult to control. When a female is infected with the disease, it can form warts on the mouth of the womb (known as the cervix), where it stays and grows; eventually causing cervical cancer. Anti-viral medicine cannot kill the HPV and one will physically have to have the warts removed with laser treatments. Dr Campbell emphasises that with this virus, prevention is better than cure and he therefore urges parents to consider this vaccination. The vaccine is more effective when one is not yet sexually

active, but women in their twenties who are sexually active can ask for the vaccine, just to be safe. Regular pap smears can also help to identify mutating cervical cells caused by the HPV. The HPV vaccination campaign targets girls in grade 4 and there will be two occasions during the year when the Department of Health will give the vaccinations: the first injection will take place between March and April, and the second one will be given in

September/October. Schools in each area are currently sending forms home for parents to give consent for the injections. Specific dates for Gauteng schools have not yet been confirmed. Unfortunately the Department is not yet able to offer this vaccine to all the schools and the campaign currently only targets secondary schools. However, parents whose children attend private schools can see their local doctor to get a prescription for the vaccine.

Range of opportunities in engineering field Loud music interrupts drivers: warns Short Lebo Mosolodi

lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za Perseverance Rikhotso’s commitment to her studies is a positive sign that the young lady lives up to her name. She is currently studying at the Ekurhuleni West College, Kathorus Campus, doing her final trimester in Mechanical Engineering. Speaking to tame TIMES, Rikhotso said after completing her N6 Mechanical Engineering, she will pursue an Engineering degree at the University of Johannesburg. “I’m following right in my two brothers’ footsteps, they are both qualified engineers and they inspired me to further my studies in this field. It is high time that the ladies start pursuing various careers in engineering so that we are not left behind countries such as Germany and Japan,” said Rikhotso. She said South Africa depends on importing of a range of products throughout the world which means a substantial amount of money leaves our shores.

Rikhotso said investing in engineering studies in South Africa would bring enormous wealth, investments and job opportunities. She said engineering studies are instrumental in helping us to compete on the same equal footing with the world. Rikhotso said that it is important that teachers encourage learners to pursue careers in the engineering field. “My long-term goal is to design a car that would be used to transport people from various parts of the world. It is important for our country that our engineers produce proudly South African designs that would earn us respect around the world”, said Rikhotso. She said it is essential that ladies strive to spread their wings because life doesn’t have guarantees.

Perseverance Rikhotso is happy there are enormous opportunities in the engineering field.
