Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a pedestrian accident on Simon Bekker Road in Tedstoneville, Germiston on 29 January.

Upon their arrival on scene they found that a sixyear-old child had been knocked over by a motor vehicle and was in a critical condition.

The boy was treated on the scene and rushed to Tambo Memorial Hospital but tragically died a few hours after.

According to Warrant Officer Kubedi, “There is still speculation regarding who was at fault when the incident took place.�

A case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Elsburg police station. However, no arrests regarding the incident have been made and the exact detail to the cause of the accident and preceding events will remain the subject of a police investigation.

After his first unsuccessful autologous transplant and an unsuccessful search over 6 million donors worldwide for a second unmatched transplant, Tina began her crusade to find him a suitable donor.

During this time, in 1999, The Sunflower Fund formed in support of the SABMR and was inspired by Chris Corlett and Darren Serebro’s heroic struggle against leukaemia. It was formed by a group of parents whose children had contracted leukaemia, and in some cases lost their battle against it. Their aim was to increase the number of donors on SABMR. They hoped to give Chris and other patients a chance at finding a suitable donor.

Their hard work paid off and Chris had a donor. He underwent his second transplant and life seemed normal. Unfortunately, Chris relapsed and passed away.

A painting, Sunflowers of Hope, was painted

by Chris before his death. Others, in their days of darkness, have done the same. What a better symbol to be attached to a cause, which Chris and Darren fought so bravely for.

The Sunflower fund has to generate funds to fight this good fight, but they still need more donors.

Finding the correct donor match depends on tissue type and because people’s genetic make-up is so varied and their tissue types are inherited characteristics, the chance of finding a suitable match is slim. In South Africa we have even more unique combinations of tissue types and therefore we need larger registry that proportionately reflects these unique tissue types.

The people of South Africa are what it takes to help the Sunflower Fund save lives.

What happens now?

By Nieto Hernandez Agang SA members feeling betrayed, DA members feeling optimistic ahead of the elections, ANC insulting the ability of black people to make anti-ANC decisions without being coaxed, these are just a few happenings for the week. Happenings which leave one question on the lips of many South Africans; what happens to Agang SA now?

Well, knowing a bit about the campaigning process I can guess a few possibilities likely to happen.

Firstly, because Mamphele’s face will be next to the DA logo on our coming ballot, I think it’s safe to assume that Tannie Hellen and the campaigns team at the DA will be parading their new find all over the country.

If this happens then I’m sure you would understand how Agang’s parades would be compromised, unless they also find themselves a new face to parade... I’m sure Lindiwe Mazibuko would appreciate the position.

By the way, just as a side thought in the form of an open question: Dear Dr Mamphela, don’t we usually wait a little longer for the floor crossing antics?

Back to the issue at hand - in the second scenario, Dr Mamphela gracefully gets off the fence she’s currently sitting on. A vocal advocate for morals and fairness, Mamphela must realize the depth of the situation her decision places on all the volunteers, leaders and followers of the brand ‘Agang SA’. These people, whom she fondly refers to as ‘citizens’ (reminds me of Lady Gaga and her ‘little monsters’), proudly wore the rainbow wheel because they believed in the ideals she presented and the hope she embodies. In my second scenario she does the noble thing, she steps down. This move may help the citizens rebuild, they already do not have enough time to salvage the already sinking boat.

The next possibility, and by now I’m sure you realise the escalation of the drama, the citizens push Dr Mamphela off the fence. I must admit Agang is a unique party leadership problem. We all have come to know leadership issues are inevitable within new parties; EFF’s Malema vs Kunene, COPE’s Lekota vs Shilowa, and if anyone knows the name of Kunene’s new party kindly send it to me so I can also watch their looming squabble. Agang’s struggle though is a ‘Party vs Leader’ problem and my feeling is that if she won’t take the step, then the structures with in the fledgling party must expel her.

In the last and most dramatic scenario, the volunteers, leaders, followers and Mamphela realise that Agang is not growing as quickly as it should be and call it a day. In my opinion, though harsh, this option actually makes real sense if you consider that some analysts have gone as far as calling Agang SA a stillborn.

Folks, this is the excitement of pre-election party politics and the 2014 elections are already promising to be interesting.

Update: Children witness brutal dog beating Ursula Reyneke writes: I just want to thank tame TIMES for the news article on the abused dog in Germiston.

I feel it is so very important that the truth be told and shown. I believe wholeheartedly in fighting for our animals and exposing those who abuse them.

Please keep your readers updated on the story and the outcome of the investigation.

Another local community newspaper reported on the dog. However, they did not put a photograph of him in the paper. They said the picture was too graphic to show.

High five to tame TIMES for doing the right thing.

Investigations regarding the brutal beating of a family dog in Germiston are still underway.

According to inspector Hope Mokolapa there are still statements that need to be taken from the children as well as the alleged perpetrator before an arrest can be made.

Mokolapa assured tame TIMES that they are doing their best to catch the perpetrator.

Another Hawks officer arrested A third Hawks officer was arrested earlier last week. It is alleged that Warrant Officer Jan Mofokeng is connected to the kidnapping case against Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir.

Mofokeng, from the organised crime unit in Germiston, is the sixth suspect arrested in the kidnapping case that has kept Krejcir behind bars since November.

The case refers to an incident in June where the six suspects allegedly kidnapped and assaulted a man whose brother, known only as ‘Doctor’, disappeared with a 25kg shipment of drugs he had been recruited to help smuggle through OR Tambo International Airport.

They are accused of keeping the man at Krejcir’s Money Point business in Bedfordview, Johannesburg, for four days, and assaulting him.

Police spokesman Solomon Makgale said the officer appeared at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court last week Wednesday and was expected back for a formal bail application on 6 February.

A positive Makgale stated that there would be more arrests of officials connected to the case.

Owen Serero charges piling up One of the men accused of trying to kill police investigators looking into Krejcir’s activities was linked to two more cases of armed robbery.

Owen Serero was arrested earlier this month as one of four suspects accused of conspiring to kill forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan and Colonel Nkosana “Killer” Ximba.

But as that case continues at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court, Serero’s other crimes will be prosecuted, for the moment, in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

It was revealed last week that Serero had been linked to a series of hijackings, and had escaped from police custody after being arrested.

Serero’s case was postponed to 12 February.

Young boys paid to steal dogs for dog fighting Citizen journalist, Melody Donovan, writes: I was watering my garden one afternoon, around three, when I noticed a young child dragging a medium sized dog by his two front feet. The dog was panting furiously and was obviously very anxious.

I was just about to call out to the boy through the gate when a young man in a Polo vehicle stopped and began speaking to him through the window. The man looked at me and so I asked him politely if I can help in any way.

Turns out that the youngster, after being questioned by the man, who spoke his language, said that he was given the dog by a school friend and needed a lift to his home in Natalspruit with the dog. Both of us were immediately suspicious of the boy’s story because the dog had no lead or collar and was being taken against his will.

It was not long and two older boys came walking down the road and the young boy quickly told the man that he was running away from them because they wanted to steal his dog for themselves.

It took a lot of cajoling, both soft and harsh talk to get the truth out of these three youngsters and when a policeman joined in and took out arresting ties they opened up in total fear.

The horror of the truth of this story is both shocking and astounding. The three boys had left Natalspruit after school with the definite intention of stealing a dog. Could be a young pit bull, staffie or even a soft young pup of any breed, they were not fussy. What happens is that they apparently are paid sometimes up to R50 for a dog, and if it is a pit bull or staffie it is trained in a dog ring for fighting. Other pups are used as bait dogs to excite killer breeds.

Horrible to hear this fact, but they take these stolen dogs, of which some are not fit for

fighting, out of people’s gardens to their area.

Too many of them are skinned alive and dripping blood and flesh and are thrown into a ring of two fighting dogs as bait. Apparently this action gives the fighter dogs more confidence to kill easily.

I was so shocked I could no longer speak.

Close to tears at the thought of what goes on in some communities and how easily R50 could be the prize money to encourage such criminal activity in youngsters. All the boys were younger than twelve and the one dragging the dog was around eight years old.

The boys readily admitted all of this to us and said that it was usually easy to steal a young dog who would come to the gate to play with them, sometimes for a tennis ball.

If the gate was still locked it was harder to get to the dog, but with three of them together it is worth trying if it meant getting paid money for the dog. The particular dog on that day was a young pit bull and friendly enough, and after they admitted the theft they showed the policeman the house where they had gotten the dog. The owner came down the road and reclaimed his pet.

Dog theft is a terrible fact taking place every day in our society. Our expensive and beloved pets, which we are expecting to live with us for many years still, are stolen from our property and can end up in the most horrible of situations.

The only thing I can urge each and every home owner is be on guard. It is happening all over and it is terrible, so do not let your young pups be too visible to the outside and especially when they are very young, or until they are old enough to guard the gate and bite if they have to.

Karabo continues to CANSA to host its change lives 11th Shavathon Amy-Mae Campbell

The non-governmental organization Karabo, situated in Brackenhurst, has offered support and assistance to many school children, teachers and parents over the years. They strive to create school environments where teachers and children feel supported, safe and happy, and their new programme called Conscious Discipline enables them to do just that.

The Conscious Discipline programme targets the education system at school and aims to create a positive climate that promotes optimal development of all children, staff and faculty. They use the method of brain stimulation exercises that teaches teachers how to understand and discipline children in a constructive way, and it develops the emotional intelligence of the child. The bigger purpose is to establish a positive connection between the teacher and the child, in order to create a safe learning environment where the child feels that he or she belongs somewhere - to the school family.

According to Marjonneke de Bruyn, a play therapist at Karabo, this programme has been successfully implemented in the USA,

where it originated and where a decline in bullying, drug abuse and suicide has also been attributed to this programme. Karabo is busy launching this programme in South Africa now and they have arranged to start workshops at Montanus Primary, South Hills Primary and Alston Primary.

Conscious Discipline also targets parents and teaches them in separate workshops how a child’s brain functions and how to discipline them in a constructive way, to ensure the optimal development of the child. They teach the parent how to deal with tantrums, for example, and where it comes from in order to solve the cause of the problem.

Karabo uses practical and fun exercises, such as learning nursery rhymes, doing puppet shows and physical stretching and breathing exercises to teach the child assertiveness, self-control, how to process aggression, how to communicate their feelings in order to build self-worth and self-esteem.

The child learns to self-regulate their behaviour and to connect with and care for others as a family.

In addition, Karabo has trained community workers to offer counselling for vulnerable children who need to cope with loss. They have centres offering support for this in Katlehong, Thokoza and Eden Park as well.

Crime against children 2 Teach children from a young age that crime is a reality.

Talk to your child every day and take time to really listen and observe. Learn as many details as you can about your child’s activities and feelings. Encourage him or her to share concerns and problems with you.

Let your children know that they can tell you anything and that you’ll be supportive.

Remember, a stranger is anyone you and your parents don’t now or don’t know well.

Have your child ask for a secret password if someone unfamiliar tries to pick them up.

Teach your children common sense rules that can help them keep safe and build the selfconfidence they need to handle emergencies.

When reporting a missing child, you need a clear, recent photograph and all basic information about the child.

CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) Governor, Manny de Freitas said that it feels almost unbelievable that the CANSA Shavathon is now 10 years old and that 2014 is the 11th National CANSA Shavathon.

“Hundreds of thousands of South Africans of all walks of life have shown their solidarity with cancer survivors at the past annual Shavathons when they have either shaved or sprayed their hair,” De Freitas said “CANSA plans on making this year’s Shavathon the biggest yet,” explained De Freitas. As it has been done in previous years, corporates, schools and organisations will have the opportunity to host their own Shavathon between 24-28 February. Official CANSA Shavathon events will take place at shopping centres across the country on Saturday, 1 March, where the cost to shave or spray (which is easily washed off) your hair or donate a ponytail is R50 for adults, and R25 for children under 12 years of age.

By shaving or spraying your hair, it is a visual sign of solidarity with those who have undergone and are undergoing cancer therapy and loose their hair.

In addition to the options of shaving or spraying their hair, people also have the opportunity to purchase a CANSA Wrap for their hair (at a cost of R50) and to also donate their ponytail at CANSA Shavathons across the country.

Ponytail donations received by CANSA are handmade into wigs for cancer patients who have lost their hair as a result of their cancer treatment. Great pride is taken in making the wigs, to ensure the wig is as close to a natural look as possible. Wigs are available at all CANSA Care Centres and provided at no cost to the public. To donate a ponytail, hair must be at least 22cm in length, and must be clean and dry.

De Freitas said that all funds raised go to the important programmes that CANSA runs in the fight against cancer.

Protect your dog from Parvo Parvo virus is a painful and deadly disease for young dogs and can only be prevented by regular vaccinations.

During December 2013 and January 2014, the Animal Anti-Cruelty League’s welfare hospital saw an unprecedented increase in cases of young dogs with Canine Parvo Virus (commonly misnamed ‘Cat Flu’). Puppies up to six months of age are especially prone to this disease. Parvo virus is a painful and deadly disease for young dogs and can only be prevented by regular vaccinations.

“Dogs that catch this disease will die, if left untreated. Even with treatment, they often do. Most of the animals seen by the AACL’s hospital have had no vaccinations. A few had only received one vaccination, and no followup boosters,” Heather Cowie AACL’s Public Relations Officer said.

Cowie added that after a puppy has been exposed to the virus, symptoms usually develop between 7 and 14 days later. Initially the puppy will not eat or drink and when it does, it will result in vomiting. The stools will change from watery to bloody, with a pungent odour. Dehydration quickly follows and then death. Prompt veterinary treatment is needed of intravenous fluids, supportive therapy including anti-nausea medication, antibiotics and other medications, depending on the status of the puppy.

Canine Parvo Virus is a highly contagious disease for dogs, and is easily spread by people through contact with vomitus and stools, but also bowls, bedding, clothes and other items which have come into contact with an animal with the virus.

Due to the costly nature of treating puppies with Parvo, and the high/increased chance of them dying, euthanasia is often the kindest option to reduce their suffering. Once you have had an infected puppy, the virus will persist in the environment for years. Bleach diluted 1:30 can be used to disinfect the environment, including bowls, bedding and kennels.

As a responsible pet owner, it is your responsibility to ensure that the day you get a new puppy, its first visit should be to the veterinarian for a health check and vaccination.

Do not trust people who say ‘it’s had its shots’, if they cannot produce a vaccination certificate which has been signed by a veterinarian.

Do not leave it until it’s too late. If you cannot afford the vaccinations, perhaps it would be better to find the puppy another home where it will receive the care it needs.

Business robbery suspects apprehended Germiston Police arrested a suspect, a 29-year-old male, following a business robbery in the Germiston area on 25 January.

It is alleged that three males entered the shop and stood by the door while the other one grabbed the victim and took money from the till point and ran off.

The victim chased the suspects and managed to corner one.

The victim called the police, who responded quickly.

Moame, Primrose SAPS spokesperson thanked the police for their quick response and the victim for the bravery displayed.

Barbaric actions lead to two arrests

Primrose police arrested two male suspects last week for different cases of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The first suspect, aged 41, was arrested at Rietfontein Road after he assaulted his partner.

The suspect broke the victim’s arm after a fight broke out between the two. The second incident happened at Makause informal

settlement where the accused alleged that he had left his trolley with a neighbour when he went away during the festive season, and upon his return the neighbour refused to give his trolley back. That was when the accused took a stick and started assaulting the victim.

Both suspects were arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS.

Armed robbery suspect arrested Primrose police arrested a 28-yearold male along Pretoria Road last week for armed robbery. The victim reported that he was driving a taxi when two males pulled him off the road with a firearm.

The suspects demanded the victim’s cell phone and when the victim refused they fired a shot and the victim gave in.

The suspects then made off with the phone. After investigation one of the suspects were apprehended and taken to Primrose SAPS for detention.

Fatal accident claims life Cyclist knocked down A cyclist was knocked down following an incident on Bradford Road.

A motor vehicle was exiting a complex building when he accidentally collided with a

cyclist who was driving down the road.

The cyclist sustained minor injuries but was taken to hospital by emergency services for a proper check-up.

Five suspects nabbed for theft The Elsburg SAPS arrested 5 suspects, aged 29-42 years old, for theft at a company.

The complainant alleged that when he reported for duty he proceeded to the security officer to collect the warehouse keys and he noticed that the door was half open. He asked the security officer who signed off what happened.

The security officer informed the complainant

that he left everything in order and the doors locked. The complainant became very suspicious and checked outside.

The complainant noticed that 32 pallets of soft drinks were missing and called the police.

The dedicated detectives followed all the leads and the suspects were arrested and will appear in the Germiston court soon.

A male aged 30 tragically passed away after he collided with a motor vehicle making a u-turn on North Reef Road in Elandsfontein.

According to EMER-G-MED spokesperson Jonathon Van Wyk emergency services

Primrose teen missing Primrose resident Chante Emmerentia Annandale went missing on 26 January.

The 17-year-old was last seen at Misty Hills Spur in Primrose.

She was wearing a black Spur top and Spur logo black pants and a backpack.

Annandale is a tall, slender girl with long blonde hair, which is usually tied up.

Lambton resident missing Natericia Marina Riebero went missing on 18 January. She was last seen driving with her ex-husband Andre Kleynhans.

Alert shop attendant Suspect arrested helps in arrest for housebreaking Elsburg Police arrested a suspect who was paying for petrol at the petrol station on Osborn Road with counterfeit money.

A cashier realised the money was fake before the suspect, a 26-year-old male, could drive off. Police were called and the suspect was arrested and taken to the Elsburg SAPS for detention.

Primrose spokesperson Cst Styles Maome stated, “The community must be aware of such criminal activities, it is possible the accused has robbed other petrol stations.”

Primrose police arrested a female suspect (22) for housebreaking and theft.

A victim opened a docket at the SAPS after finding his house’s door broken, with items from the house and from his garage missing.

Primrose SAPS followed the leads and the suspect was tracked and arrested.

Harry urges humans to not let any rubbish get into the water. “Help keep the water clean and pure so that creatures and plants will have a place to live. Then you can also enjoy it by fishing, swimming, sailing or bird watching in and around the wetlands - and keep doing so for years to come.”

Making offices a safer place As from February 2014, Makrosafe will be offering a full Health and Safety Certificate course that has specifically been put together to cater for students with little or limited knowledge about health and safety principles. The course will silence any complaint about ‘not enough professionals being available’.

The disconnect between graduates and the workplace is enormous. This year alone, thousands of South African graduates are expected to enter the job market. But only a few will be lucky enough to find an appropriate job. Those who struggle will do so for many reasons, but even the lucky ones will experience difficulty in adapting to the workplace.

This is because few colleges and universities manage to adapt quickly enough to lecture to an ever-changing market and to release students that meet industry’s demands.

The health and safety industry isn’t much different from other industries with talks about ‘insufficient capacity or lack of trained professionals’ doing the rounds continuously.

To answer the need, Makrosafe will introduce a new certificate course from February this year.

The Makrosafe Health and Safety Certificate course has been specifically designed to provide training to those with even only a very basic level of understanding of health and safety.

When the course was designed, the objective was to put together a programme that would appeal to and cater for a ‘lay-man-off-thestreet’ and train him up to an entry level understanding of health and safety. The student should also be able to apply the learning in a practical manner.

The course aims to achieve this by embedding knowledge and focusing more on the practical aspects to ensure the student can do the job, rather than aiming at seeing how well a person can memorise information provided and regurgitate that information on an examination paper. Once a student has completed the course, he or she will have

the know-how and the experience required to perform the tasks.

The course is also based on adult outcomes based education principles. This gives the candidate the opportunity to network in a typical group environment, thereby understanding and gaining knowledge of various industries, hearing different views and opinions and improving his or her own communication skills.

Offering the full scope The Makrosafe Health and Safety Certificate course covers the full health and safety scope and includes aspects like legislation, functions of a Health and Safety Representative, principles of Health and Safety, risk assessment and implementation and evaluation of safety management programmes. The course is divided into different chapters. Each chapter can be presented individually and at a different time.

This makes it possible to spread the course over a longer period, instead of being lectured for to 10 days consecutively.

The course content has been put together by a team of dedicated and experienced health and safety professionals, who are able to draw knowledge and information from the vast database Makrosafe has created since it joined the industry, many years ago. The course is fully recognised and accredited by the Health and Welfare SETA. The course also does not expire, as it is a skills program qualification, which does not require that refresher training for the particular unit standards have to be done. As accidents in the workplace occur every day, the South African industry can certainly do with more health and safety professionals. Since 2010, the government has already been calling on the business community to assist in creating another five million jobs in the coming years. If only a small percentage would attend the Makrosafe Health and Safety Certificate course, the call will be answered and the target will be met. More importantly, workplaces in South Africa would become a safer place.

Gysie kon skaars boe of baa sê, toe sit ek klaar in ‘n karrretjie, besig om my gordel vas te maak. Die cherry op die koek was dat die stampkarretjies vir laerskoolkinders bedoel was. Ek en Gysie toring toe soos reuse bo almal uit. Gysie is ‘n lang man en hy moes omtrent soos ‘n padda sit, met sy kniëe langs sy ore, net om behoorlik in die karretjie te pas en die pedale by te kom.

Toe die stampery begin, was dit ook omtrent ‘n ander storie. Al die kindertjies op die baan besluit toe om vir ek en Gysie om elke hoek en draai te stamp, omdat ons duidelik nie so ingeoefen soos hulle was nie. Voor ek nog ordentlik asem kon skep, doef! Kom die volgende stamp weer.

Die volgende oggend word ek wakker met twee yslike bloukolle op my knieë en ‘n baie stywe nek, maar ek moet erken dat ek en Gysie lanklaas so lekker gelag het!

Ek het vir net ‘n splitsekond ‘n flits gesien van die jong Trixie en Gysie toe ons net ontmoet het in ons tienerjare. Ons het geweet hoe om pret te hê en laf te wees en ons het voluit geleef.

Tip: Moet nie toelaat dat jou ouderdom jou terughou nie. Wees spontaan en probeer bietjie iets wat buite jou gemaksone of oudersomsbeperking lê.

Nemai Consulting have been appointed by Rand Water as independent environmental consultants to undertake a Basic Assessment Report for the proposed construction of O6 Pipeline which will extend from the Palmiet Pumping Station to Klipfontein covering an approximate distance of 25 kms, Ekurhuleni Municipality, Gauteng Province.

The project forms part of a number of projects intended to augment the water supply to the Palmiet Pumping Station Supply System. The Palmiet Pumping Station provides water to the Meyersdal reservoir of Ekurhuleni through pumps at lower pressures than the Palmiet – Klipfontein system.

Please note that this is the final review of the Basic Assessment Report (BAR). The BAR has been amended to include a second alternative which was not initially considered. This alternative includes tunnelling from Signal Hill to north of Gillooley’s intersection. This is necessary due to space constraints along the Van Buuren Road servitude and the possible impacts on the existing O2 Pipeline. Currently it is difficult to maintain O2 pipeline and there is no space for an additional pipeline. A large portion of the O2 is concrete pipeline so working too close to this will add to the risk during construction. The area within Van Buuren Road is well established and fully developed with existing underground infrastructure. Furthermore, Van Buuren is a busy road thus construction will cause large impact of traffic. All landowners affected by both alternatives will be notified of the public review of the BAR. Further, a forty (40) day review period has been provided to ensure all stakeholders have adequate time to comment on the proposed project.

Public Participation A public meeting was held during the initial public review period. An additional public meeting will be scheduled if requested. All registered Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) will be notified of the date and venue.

The aim of the Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) bursary scheme is to ensure that financial constraints do not hold learners from disadvantaged communities or households back from acquiring tertiary education. The GDE is proud to announce that over the last four years, they have been able to award bursaries directly to no-fee paying schools.

“If we want to break inequality, we must invest in our learners. Our responsibility does not end with grade 12,” said Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane. Each bursary will fund the student’s degree or diploma for the whole duration of the course. However, it is up to the learner not to drop out or fail. The reality is that the GCRA bursary scheme cannot fund everyone who has fared well in matric.

Mokonyane therefore asks that each bursary recipient makes the most of the financial support they are getting, as there are many other learners who are also deserving.

MEC Barbara Creecy and Premier Mokonyane call on the community, and especially the private sector, to invest in learners who are unable to enrol for tertiary education because of their financial situation. “If you assist someone, it will benefit South Africa immensely and change lives,” said Creecy.

According to Mokonyane, the GDE has partnered with the private sector to finance deserving students, but she feels that the business sector could do more to invest in education. “The government cannot provide internships; this is where we need the private sector to come forward.

St Benedict’s College travelled out to Pretoria on 25 January to play 10 water polo matches against Pretoria Boys High.

As usual, all the games were hard-fought and competitive. St Benedict’s came away with 8 wins out of 10 matches.

Jamie Tweedie, Mitchell Losper and Keegan Williamson excelled in the 1st team match.

Centre-forward Tweedie dominated the attack, ably assisted by right-wing Losper.

Goalkeeper Williamson was called on several times to pull-off some scintillating saves.

SABC to give boxing more coverage

Lebo Mosolodi lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za The South African Broadcasting Commission (SABC), Boxing South Africa (BSA) and the Department of Sport and Recreation finally reached an agreement that local boxing will get enough airplay on the television screen.

The latest development is a result of resolutions taken at last year’s Boxing Indaba. Live boxing coverage had dried up on SABC screens from 2010. Well-decorated boxing trainer Nick “Mthakathi” Durandt once lashed out at the SABC, accusing the public broadcaster of killing the sport.

The outspoken trainer/manager, who has produced 30 world champions, said at that time that “the constant television

blackout of live matches was to the detriment of boxing.”

Acting SABC chief operations officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng said the move of broadcasting boxing matches on their television channels was motivated by the need for all parties to serve all South Africans accordingly. “We are at this stage working on a broader SABC strategy that includes bringing back live boxing on-air. As the public broadcaster, we are ready to showcase the South African boxing talent in the next fiscal year.”

Speaking to tame TIMES Boxing, South Africa spokesperson Loyiso Mtya said the recently signed boxing broadcasting deal is the best news heard within boxing circles in a long time. He said boxing fans initially thought that the sport is fading because of lack of exposure.

“We have some of the best boxers in the country who are not known by fellow South Africans due to lack of publicity.

Our boxers leave the country to compete internationally and come back victorious. However, fellow South Africans do not know anything about their great boxing achievements.

Boxers such as Simphiwe Vityeka went to Australia and managed to gain two world titles. However, a large number of South Africans didn’t know much about his great boxing triumph,” said Mtya.

The former WBO Pan African champion Vusi Malinga from Katlehong said his last boxing fight that was broadcasted on SABC was in 2011 in Mafikeng. He was fighting for the IBF title against Michael Domingo from Philippines.

“One of the biggest boxing matches I have fought in 2012 was the IBF world title against Leo Santa Cruz in United States of America. I was disappointed that it wasn’t broadcasted in any of the three SABC channels. Last year I also fought for the IBF world title against Stuart Hall in the United Kingdom.

Again that big boxing match wasn’t broadcasted by any of our SABC channels,” concluded Malinga.

“Ross’ rise to professional ranks is proof that the current formula of nurturing rugby talent is working. The fact that we have a former varsity player captaining one of the top teams in the country is testament to the success of talent development efforts,” Pienaar said.

Reflecting on his first year of captaincy, Ross acknowledges that, “It was a massive honour and privilege to be tasked with leading the Blue Bulls rugby team in the 2013 Currie Cup season. This was a huge moment not only in my career but in my life as well. Last season, we had a fairly young team and unfortunately didn’t make it to the play-off stage but we’ll once again be pushing for top honours during the 2014 season.”

Over the years, South Africa has managed to remain one of the top three nations which continue to dominate world rugby. Since readmission into international competitions, the Springboks have managed to win two rugby world cups. “For the Springboks to remain competitive and claim the top spot in world rugby, sustainable talent development efforts such as the FNB Varsity Cup, are crucial,” Pienaar said.

The Aussies have arrived in South Africa on the top of a fantastic summer down under, smashing the England team in all formats of the game. It is quite unbelievable that the ICC, who govern the game, do not schedule a five match test series, such as the Ashes, between the Proteas and the Aussies. These two nations have consistently been at the fore of International Test Cricket over the last few years and deserve to do the battle of a five match test series.

However, down to the business of the series ahead. The Proteas key bowlers for me will be Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander. I do hope that the Proteas management select Robin Peterson ahead of Imran Tahir as the spin option, as Peterson in the past has shown that he is also no slouch with the bat. Smith and De Villiers with the bat are my two bets as to where the bulk of our runs will come from. The Aussies danger will come from the in form Ashes opening batsman, Chris Rodgers, skipper Michael Clarke and all-rounder Shane Watson; along with quick bowlers Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddell and the ever reliable Ryan Harris. Nathan Lyon should hopefully pose no problem on the South African wickets with his off-spin bowling, but the Proteas batsmen need to make sure that they don’t underestimate Lyon as the England batsmen did. I look forward to the contest ahead and do believe that our boys will step up to the plate and remain as the number one test team after the test series.
