Cops barracks vandalised Charity Moyo
charity@tametimes.co.za The government-owned prefab structures (zozos) that were used as police barracks by Vosloorus police officers are in a shameful state. They have been vandalised, became a place for criminals to hide and are putting residents’ safety and lives at stake. The zozos situated at Mabuya Park section in Vosloorus were initially installed for police officers with no accommodation in the area. They were up-market structures fully furnished with all household necessities, but all has been wiped out. Prince Masuku, a concerned resident said, “We are no longer safe in our own homes due to those structures and we plea to the government to remove them. The structures were in a good state but every day we noticed something is missing. The criminals have stolen the metals, including doors and window frames. In a recent incident a man entered one of our neighbours’ house and stole a car radio and a jack. He ran to hide in one of the structures and they managed
to catch him.” Jerry Ramohapi, Public Relations Officer of Vosloorus CPF said, “The place used to be admired by people around the area and it was well maintained by the police who occupied it. The disaster started when the police evacuated the area and there was no one to take care of the structures. The criminals took advantage of the situation by breaking into the structures, stealing everything and breaking the structures. We are appealing to the government to allow the community to utilise them before they are completely damaged. Some of the structures can be repaired and used for community projects.” He added that they are also requesting the government to donate the zozos to the Vosloorus CPF to be used as site offices for their sub-forum members. Ramohapi said this will minimise travelling cost for their members and assist the community members who want to report matters to the CPF instead of travelling to the police station. Captain Piet Rossouw, spokesperson of Vosloorus Police Station said, “There is no one who is utilising the structures and
the last police officers who occupied the area left October last year. The area was also not safe for police officers to reside in. We have sent a report to the province regarding those structures and we are still
waiting for their response as the structures are left unattended. We are appealing to the community to report any criminal activities happening in those structures so the perpetrators can be arrested.”

Youth educated on voting
Happy Khumalo happy@tametimes.co.za
Vosloorus youth are listening attentively to the Ekurhuleni Youth Unity, educating them about the importance of voting. The City of Ekurhuleni Youth Unity hosted a workshop aimed at educating the youth about democracy and civic responsibility, held at Vosloorus Civic Hall. The democracy and civic education workshop focused on promoting knowledge on social cohesion among young people, exploring topics such as the Constitution, national symbols and fostering national pride and patriotism. The purpose of the workshop was to empower the young people of Ekurhuleni with enough information so that they realise the importance of registering and voting in the coming elections. There will be 220 voting stations erected in Ekurhuleni for everyone to have access to cast their votes. The workshop was planned as a build-up to the IEC’s voter registration weekend on 8 and 9 February, so that young eligible voters who have not yet registered may see the importance of doing so. The City of Ekurhuleni Youth Unity representatives highlighted that it is important for youth to vote as it will make a difference in their lives. The youth’s grievances were unemployment, housing, home affairs and education and they intend to make a difference with their votes.

No growth in Women urged to partake in Bafana bafana soccer tournament Lebo Mosolodi

lebo.kathorus@tametimes.co.za The South African soccer loving public is slowly but surely getting used to the reality that our senior national soccer team’s standard of play is dropping. Our footballers also do not show pride in wearing the national soccer team jersey and the team is gradually becoming the whipping boys of African soccer. Minor football playing nations such as Zimbabwe are gradually lifting their game. Even Zimbabwe has recently reached the 2014 Chan competition quarter final stage. Speaking to tame TIMES, the Katlehong-based Tsunami Football Club coach Sabelo ‘Bharaza’Nkosi said the sorry state of senior national soccer raises concerns to most football loving people. “We continue to select our tried and tested footballers who have won nothing in their international football history. Aspiring players from the small teams are constantly being ignored by the national team selectors, which held back our football development. Nigeria brought novice players, but they outplayed our so called experienced senior national team. It is high time we promote our under 20-23 national soccer teams, because the senior team continues to fail us.” The Vosloorus-based Overland Football Club coach Thabiso Dubazana said he doesn’t watch the senior national soccer team play because it brings endless heartache. “Our tried and tested players are more into fashion, money and fame, which hinders football development. It is high time that football players’ managers appoint accountants for these soccer players, so that they need not worry about money and solely concentrate on playing the beautiful game. We have senior soccer players who didn’t achieve anything in their domestic and national soccer history, while most accomplished Premier Soccer League (PSL) players such as Daine Klate are constantly being ignored,” said coach Dubazana. The class of 1996’s achievement remains second to none, while their successors continues to disgrace their great achievement with mediocre performances. Dubazana said South African players are campaigning in one of Africa’s richest soccer leagues on a fulltime basis. “Their counterparts from the continent are playing in the semiprofessional leagues and are paid smaller salaries compared to the South African domestic footballers, but their achievements is way beyond Mzansi’s soccer players,” said Dubazana. Their recent mediocre performance annoyed the Minister of Sports, Fikile Mbalula. He went as far as labelling Bafana a bunch of useless losers who don’t respect this nation. Minister Mbalula further questioned the inclusion of the experienced players who didn’t achieve anything to show this nation. Bafana failed to qualify for the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil and they qualified in most competitions by virtue of being the host nation. These tournaments include the 2013 African Cup of Nations, the 2010 Fifa World cup and 2014 Chan tournament. Despite Safa’s efforts to host various tournaments, Bafana continues to live up to their reputation of getting knocked out during the early stages of the football competitions. This proves beyond reasonable doubt that in the past decade there is no growth in our Bafana Bafana.
converged at Vosloorus soccer ground to watch youngsters showcasing their talents. Teams were competing in three age groups, namely u/13, u/15 and u/17,” said Matlala. The Alaska Football Club was crowned the tournament winner in the u/13 category. In the u/15 grouping, Tom Lions were crowned champions; and in the u/17 group, Lucky Birds took the top spot. Despite the great success of the tournament, Matlala cited her concern about lack of the participation of female soccer teams. “This year we are calling all the female soccer teams to register with our organising team. We want to see football growing in this part of Ekurhuleni. We are expecting female soccer stars to showcase their talent. That is a reason why we are optimistic that the number of participating teams will escalate this festive season,” said Matlala. The event director, Themba Mathibela Lucky Birds are the u/17 Chris Hani Crossing Cup champions. further cited that inclusion of female soccer teams will help to develop The Chris Hani Crossing Cup lived up to its reputation of being one of the leading festive season female soccer. “In the township female soccer is soccer tournaments held in Lesedi Soccer grounds gradually deteriorating because of a lack of participation in Vosloorus. The mall’s senior marketing executive, in such tournaments. Chris Hani Crossing Cup should Lebohang Matlala said the football tournament was take part in discovering the talent of aspiring female soccer players to feature in Banyana Banyana,” said a great success. “There were 600 aspiring male soccer players who took Mathibela. part in the competition. We also had a great turnout that Last year’s winning teams walked home with new soccer kits, soccer balls and trophies.
