Ramadan is celebrated by Muslims throughout the world and it is a time for reflection, practice of self-discipline and self –control and empathy for those who are less fortunate. This is a month where acts of charity and good deeds are increased.
BAHRAIN
CAIRO
For our CSR Committee, it means all of this and more – it is a time for caring and giving, for trying to make someone’s life a little better and to bring a smile to their faces. This year, the office Managers came up with ideas / plans on what they can do within their jurisdictions to help those who are less fortunate, we have donated food packages, food coupons and vouchers, clothes and toys to orphans and medical aid to the elderly. The teams from the regional offices have worked tirelessly and spared no efforts to ensure that the needs of as many less fortunate people were met. Most of the regional offices provided food boxes, coupons, gift vouchers and essential items to families in need, clothing and toys for orphans between the ages of 4 and 10. Donations were made online to charitable organisations as well, who in turn would provide medicines and essentials to those in need.
UAE
This is an ongoing project for the CSR Committee and we hope to be able to do more in the years to come.

😊
World Cup 2022 – You are cheering for? Brazil
Name a song you know by heart? When I was teenager, I used to be a huge fan of George Michael. I used to memorise his songs, such as Last Christmas and Careless Whispers. On the Arabic side of things, I adore all music pieces sung by Mohamed Mounir “the King” and Ali Al Haggar. 6

The Netherlands by Barbara Koenen-Geerdink
About shopping, many products that we all use on a daily basis are from The Netherlands. Cheese is an obvious one (Gouda, which we pronounce as Khaudah) as well as beer (Heineken), flower bulbs (80% of the world’s bulbs are produced in The Netherlands) but also tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers and lettuce.
Windmill, clogs, cheese and tulips. Yes, you got that right. I am from The Netherlands.
I am from a city called Eindhoven, and you may not be aware that the home appliances and healthcare giant Philips is from my hometown. Eindhoven was therefore always a manufacturing city and only in recent years when Philips’ headquarters moved from the city, it became a lot more civilised (and enjoyable).
Many people will refer to our country as “Holland” but Holland is merely a province in the north of the country. So anyone who wouldn’t come from this province, would be offended as The Netherlands is more than just “Holland”. I, for example, come from a province called “Zuid-Brabant”, which is only a 50-minute drive away from either the Belgium or German borders. We are often referred to as the most Burgundian in our country, enjoying life, food and good company.
The Netherlands is quite an interesting country. With 41,850KM2 and 17 million people it has the highest population density in Europe. It is also the lowest-lying country in Europe as over a quarter (26%) of our country is below sea level. The highest point is 322.5m above sea level, otherwise the country is pretty flat wherever you go, which is great for cycling. According to the 2020 World Happiness Index, the Netherlands are the sixth happiest country in the world and Dutch men are the tallest men in the world, with an average of 182CM. For reference, my husband is 190CM and my uncle is 210CM. 8
The Netherlands has great sights to visit. From cheese markets in Gouda, the Windmills in Kinderdijke and tulips at the Keukenhof. Amsterdam is obviously an attractive tourist destination, but I think that Rotterdam and Maastricht are probably my most favourite cities in the country. Both of them are a bit quirky. Most of Rotterdam was bombed during the second World War, but they have reestablished the city in an attractive way, and worth visiting if you enjoy arts and modern design. Maastricht is located in the south of the country, close to the German and Belgium borders and as the oldest city of The Netherlands it is known for its historic sights, great food and shopping.
In The Netherlands we experience four seasons and sometimes even four seasons in one day. Especially in spring the weather can do as it pleases. From snow to sunshine and rain, you will never know what each day brings. Best time for visiting is around the King’s birthday end of April which is celebrated across the country and which is a true and unique experience on its own. The whole nation dresses in our favourite colour, orange, and celebrates all together. Especially in Amsterdam, the capital city, people walk the streets and get in their boats on the famous canals to join in the celebrations.
People in The Netherlands are generally very friendly and almost everyone will be happy to speak to you in English. Learning languages has always been a thing as no one else in the world speaks Dutch. They absolutely love cycling, we have great cycling facilities with bike lanes across all cities and villages and most Dutchies will own about three different bicycles. They even juggle holding an umbrella, groceries and their mobile phones on the bicycle whilst manoeuvring through busy traffic. If you have a chance to make it to the country, make sure you hop on a bike and explore the sights like a local. 9
Aliens from SOFAR
By Saquib Malik Saturn is not the only Planet with rings
You are right if you are thinking of Neptune, but there is a brand-new ring being formed in the Solar system. 6,000+ satellites orbit planet Earth, out of which 60% have already died; this leaves so much space junk in orbit and since gravity acts in all directions all the orbiting space junk is going to merge into the heaviest single plane resulting in the formation of a Saturnesque flat ring around planet Earth. Ninjas never wear black except when…
You know those Japanese comical acts where some of the performers wear the same colour as the background? It’s a trick used by Japanese Kabuki theatre stagehands to move things around and assist actors. During one fateful performance an actor collapsed and died on stage, while the audience thought it was part of the act, onstage personnel felt a presence that ‘attacked’ the actor.
10
Turned out that this was the first ever assassination carried out on stage and accredited to a Ninja. Although the darkest colour worn by Ninjas is blue, the black garb was a requirement of the situation and the shock of the incident cemented the image of Ninjas in black garbs, throughout pop culture.
In 1944 Maurice Ewing discovered that at a depth of between 500m to 1,000m the layer of ocean water had density and temperature which was ideal for horizontal propagation of sound. Any sound created at that depth would travel for thousands of miles. This helped greatly in creating life saving equipment for downed pilots or capsized ships in the ocean. This layer of water was called the SOFA channel. Any low-tech device calibrated to implode at the SOFAR channel depth could be picked up by underwater microphones which would help to triangulate the position of the implosion from thousands of miles away, thus saving lives. Ewing predicted that since gases behave like liquids there should be a SOFAR channel in the atmosphere as well. Surprisingly … there really was such a layer in the atmosphere, at an altitude of 45,000 m (mesosphere). In an era when there was no satellite imagery the atmospheric sound channel used microphones attached to high altitude helium balloons and concepts similar to GPS, to listen to and track any nuclear or missile tests performed by any country. The discovery of this channel in the atmosphere and purpose of putting balloons in it were information of the highest level of secrecy. Incidentally when one oblong listening device popped its balloon and dropped in Roswell, New Mexico, the US government was only happy to let imagineers believe that it was an alien craft. The rest, as they say, is Box Office History. Highest paid sportsman of all time
The highest-paid sportsman of all time was Gaius (Guy-us) Appuleius, a roman chariot racer. Our Guy had won 1462 races and ran up in 1438 races, earning him today’s equivalent of 15 billion US dollars.

health wellbeing by Randa Fakhoury
It’s all about improving your moo-d. From the Netherlands and Switzerland to the U.S., cow-hugging farms are sprouting up everywhere. The Dutch even have a name for it: koe knuffelen. The idea is to benefit from good old-fashioned human-animal touch, except with cows not cats. Apparently cows’ slow heartbeat and warm body temperature makes them great for hugging. Chew on that.
Cryotherapy
Would you lock yourself into a closed space with temperatures as low as minus 230°F for three minutes? It’s a Japanese practice that took off in the 1970s to treat inflammation and arthritis, conditions for which cryotherapy is shown to work. That was before Hollywood stars like Jessica Alba and Jennifer Aniston more recently decided to jump on the bandwagon, with unproven claims that it helps keep you young. A whole new way to chill out.

Why a lot of people feel scarcity when they think about the future?
It won’t happen all of a sudden:
HAPPINESS MANTRAS Saudade
A melancholic sense of longing for the past, for a person or simply for a dream world doesn’t sound very happy. Yet scientists have found that a tiny dose of sadness actually helps us heal better, and feel happier in the process. That’s where this Brazilian emotion comes in. It’s such a central part of the country’s culture there’s even an annual day — Jan. 30 — for it.
Sleep Robots
Struggle to sleep without your partner next to you? Technology has a fix so bizarre it’s almost creepy: breathing robots that fool your sleepy brain into thinking you’re not alone. Oh, and the robots come with birth certificates. Breathing easy?
by Ali Zakaria
The future is always unpredictable and uncontrollable. It is out of our hands to direct. Whatever you name, the mind or ego is constantly pursuing prediction, control, and certainty. That is the reason we take more risks when we are on vacation. We do bungee jumping, skydiving, and one-night stands because we want to break out of this silly, dull mind that always wants to predict and control everything. Let us talk about how the future will unfold because you will be calmer and safe when you know this.
New Wellness Tricks Cow Cuddle
A Gentle reminder: The future isn’t that scary
Guyub
No one word or phrase in English can do justice to this beautiful and rich Javanese concept: that a sense of community is central to fostering happiness. So if you’ve lost your job, know that others in your Indonesian society will look after you while you’re searching for work. Broken-hearted? You’re never alone.
Niksen
Or do it the Dutch way. As identified earlier, niksen or “do nothing” is a philosophy that encourages you to just stare at nature, laze around or listen to music ... you’re fine as long as you’re not looking for any purpose. After all, shouldn’t happiness be a purpose in itself?
You will wake up one day and look at the sky to find a traffic jam of flying cars in the sky while you are still driving a Toyota. This is how you think the future will manifest. There will be years of adaptation to any new technology that changes the way we live. At first, it will be expensive, and very few can afford it and dare to try it. After a year or two, more companies will start doing it more efficiently and economically. When cell phones appeared at the beginning of this century, it was impressive to see someone with a cellphone, and he did not have many people to call. Cell phones, SIM cards, and subscriptions got cheaper until it became weird nowadays not to have one.
You will be a part of it:
You might find yourself part of this shift introduced by this new technology. You might be asked to develop new ideas on how you can do your job more quickly, more efficiently, or economically. You might be asked to be part of the team that will digitalize the company’s system. If you are not part of the change, try to find a way to participate and initiate new ideas to your managers, if they are always discouraging new ideas without any reasonable excuse. Start searching for the most innovative companies in your industry and apply to join them because if your company isn’t innovating now, then your job won’t be here shortly.
The more it takes, the more it gives back:
45% of all current jobs will disappear in the next ten years, according to a study done at Oxford University. I am not saying this to scare you; I want you to experience a smooth shift if your profession won’t be here in the future. You won’t die if you lose your job tomorrow, but you will go through challenging times that can be
avoided if you were prepared for this moment. Change is inventible, but sudden change is. Start searching if the automation takes over your job or not in the next few years and act accordingly. If you are a driver, I think you should start learning a new skill now. This skill should be as profitable as your current position, so you won’t be obliged to compromise your lifestyle. The good thing about technology is that it gives as many jobs as it takes away. The internet took away too many jobs, like postman, videotapes and DVD rentals, flight booking offices, travel agencies, and many more, but how many jobs it created? We cannot count YouTubers, social media management agencies, content creation, web development, UX design, and millions of other jobs. When we think about the future, we feel scared because we think only about how it will replace us, but we don’t think about how it will also open new opportunities and new industries. We don’t think about how it can make the job that we are doing right now much easier, faster, and more efficient.
Universal basic income:
Universal basic income is an amount of money that the government gives to every citizen to have his basic human needs. Many countries are discussing the matter, but there are many obstacles because it has its downside. The idea was initiated by the English judge and philosopher Thomas More in his book Utopia in 1516. Not a single nation talked about this concept before because there was a lack of ideas and energy sources. Additionally, there was always a lack of labor, industries were always in need of humans to function. The fact that governments are considering such an idea is very promising for me it gives me evidence that the future is much brighter than the past. We have the technology to serve and income to secure our basic needs. Finally, I believe humankind is always learning, and we mess up a lot, but we learn and get back on track much wiser, I am not afraid, and I am inviting you to do the same.

PREPARATION Zeina Makarem’s
Homemade Cherry Pie
16
INGREDIENTS •
Chilled pie dough for top and bottom 9-inch pie (see our pie crust recipe)
•
4 1/2 cups pitted fresh cherries, see note if using frozen or canned (2 1/2 pounds, unpitted)
•
1/4 cup (30 grams) cornstarch
•
2/3 to 3/4 cup (135 to 150 grams) sugar, adjusted accordingly to sweetness of cherries
•
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
•
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
•
1 tablespoon lemon juice
•
1/8 teaspoon salt
•
1 tablespoon cold unsalted butter, cut into small squares
•
1 egg yolk
•
1 tablespoon heavy or whipping cream
•
Additional sugar for crust topping (coarse sugar is a nice option)
This Cherry pie receipe is so easy. All you need to do is mix, fill and bake. The hardest part is setting the cherries. Or you can use the canned ones. This will only take you 30 minutes. The most important thing is not rush yourself and trust your gut while going through the baking process. I promise it’s worth it. You can use sweet cherries, sour cherries or a combination of both, just remember to dial the sugar back or up depending on what you choose. You can buy a cherry pitter, however, if you do not have one try using the thicker round end of a chopstick to push the pits out of the middle of each cherry. Another option is to push each cherry down onto a piping tip. The sugar amount for this recipe varies depending on how sweet your cherries are. Add to your taste. We like to use fresh cherries for this, but you can use canned (see note below). There are two types of cherries that can be used to make a Cherry Pie, sweet or sour, with many varieties within each classification. The type of cherry used will affect how much sugar is added to the cherry filling. I find that sour cherries need the full amount of sugar given in the recipe, whereas a little less sugar is needed for sweet cherries. Be sure to taste and adjust the amount of sugar. What I will say if you are using fresh cherries, either sweet or sour, is that they should be pitted. And the easiest way to pit cherries is to buy a cherry pitter, a very inexpensive and effective tool. Along with the cherries and sugar, the filling has a little tapioca to thicken the cherry juices, salt to bring out the cherry's flavor, a little vanilla extract and Kirsch (cherry liqueur) for flavor, and lemon juice (to prevent the cherries from turning brown). Once baked, let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least an hour before cutting so the fruit juices have time to be absorbed back into the cherries 17
5 Books you wish you read earlier One sentence in a book can change how you see yourself, other people, and the world. One sentence can take you from a level of awareness to a much higher one. One sentence can fix your marriage forever; one sentence that makes you better with finances can make you raise your kids better. That is why I will always read books and write books. I will recommend five books that, since I read them, I feel, think, and behave differently.
Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment by Tal Ben Shahar Tal is one of the best teachers of positive psychology on the planet nowadays; in this book, he asked all the difficult questions we have about happiness and answered them logically. In this book, you will discover that you had many misconceptions about happiness, and once you become aware of them, you will avoid doing them.
The Game of Life and How to Play It by Shinn, Florence Scovel I can not tell which idea in this book is the one that will make you feel a lot better, but I know something else. The energy in which a book is written is always transferred to the reader. The power in which this book was written will make you feel blessed and also a blessing.

The Art of Seduction by Robert Greene Robert Greene is writing classics while he is still alive. When you read his books, you will feel the fragrance of history. Greene can easily bring unusual stories from the past and apply their wisdom and lessons to the modern world.
The Prince by Niccolò Machiavelli The classic of classics on politics. Do you want to know how politicians think and manage their power without conspiracy theories? Read this book. If you understood the concepts of this book and reflected on the political scene in your country and globally, you will know why events are happening and why they are happening in this sequence. You will discover the patterns of the political events, and you can predict upcoming ones.
The 4 hour Workweek by Tim Ferris Many books were written on quitting your job and making something you love for the rest of your life, but most of them are unrealistic and irrational. They are just empty words to motivate you to quit your job. This book is different. Tim tackled the idea of having a job in a fundamental way that will make you question the concept of employment and how you spend your time while living on this earth. He also asked him the most challenging questions no one wants to ask and answer. This book also has many valuable ideas and resources on working less and earning more, but this is not what makes it unique.
Some of these books need to be read slowly. Others need to be applied and implemented to get the most out of them. It would be best to read a chapter, then give yourself some time to reflect on the ideas and feel the feelings they aroused. I promise you won’t recognize yourself after reading them. 19
SUPPORTING ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE IN OUR COMMUNITIES The firm is supporting the C3 Impact Accelerator Program 2022, powered by HSBC. WE ARE ISO 14001 ACCREDITED Our Dubai office is now ISO 14001 certified. ISO 14001 is the international standard that provides a framework for an organisation to follow for an effective Environmental Management System (EMS). Al Tamimi & Company’s ISO certification initiative is a long-term project and, by 2025, we aim to have all of our offices certified.
CLEAN UP DRIVE KSA As a part of our CSR initiatives, our colleagues in Al Khobar partnered up with a local Filipino Community Organization to assist with a cleanup drive, in May.
WHAT’S NEXT Now that we have been accredited, it doesn’t mean that the hard work is over. In fact, it’s only just beginning! We will now be subject to annual ISO audits, and we will need everyone’s help and support to ensure we continue to meet the criteria to remain ISO 14001 compliant. In addition, we want to start working with teams outside of Dubai on getting more offices certified. If you are interested in working with the ISO project team, or you want to put your office forward to begin the accreditation process, please contact: ISO14001@tamimi.com 20

MENACW 2022 provided a platform for governments, cities, private sector leaders, financial institutions and civil society to discuss opportunities to build forward from the pandemic by identifying opportunities to enhance climate action. The event brought together key stakeholders to take the pulse of climate action in the region, explore climate challenges and opportunities and showcase ambitious solutions.
I had an opportunity to be a volunteer for one of the most exciting events by Isha Foundation – Dubai - Save Soil Mission. A crowd of 10,000 and more who was fascinated and excited to be a part of the most important event and mission of the year. A call to the world by Sadhguru’s Save Soil Pledge that we as UAE residents shall be a part of the mission. A 100-day mission covering 26 countries and 30,000 km Sadhguru journey from the United Kingdom to India, was the talk of the town around the globe. The event was organized by the Ministry of Local Weather Change and Setting (MoCCAE - UAE) – at the World Trade Centre Dubai on Friday May 20 22. Bringing awareness of the present situation around the world where Soil has decreased tremendously and within a period of 40 to 50 years of topsoil for agriculture left around the world, it is a lifethreatening moment for us and our future generation. The need for soil is as important as the need for water around our life. A speech by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence; Ms Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Local weather Change and Setting, Indian Ambassador Sunjay Sudhir, and Isha Foundation – Sadhguru was so informative that the Message was clear that time is slipping away from our hands and action has to be taken NOW. Soil is a priority just like water around the globe and we are all responsible to make this world a better place to live. Keeping in our mind that Save Soil is our mission that Isha Foundations has lined 60 days of the 100day marketing campaign, the UAE is the 74th nation that has signed the dedication that we can attain 4 billion votes and no authorities is not going to ignore to save lots of soil,” he underlined. We have to restore the health of the soil just as we have destroyed it every single way as possible. “Don’t look ahead to tomorrow, make it (soil conservation) occur now,” Sadhguru underlined, as each of us has restricted time and now we have to make use of it for issues that actually matter – to make it profound, nice and impactful were the ending words of a two-hour event. ‘Let’s all work collectively’ were the words of Ms Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri and Love of nature were the words of Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan. I am glad I did not miss this event and could give a helping hand and learn more about our Mother Earth. I also pledge to do what I can to make UAE a beautiful city and at least plant a tree whenever I can. SAVE SOIL – Let us do it.
I had an opportunity to visit on one of the days and I hope to be able to be present for the whole event the next year. You can imagine the extensive topics touching the climate change in the region presented by the speakers from around the world. I have picked interesting topics that are a part of everyone’s life in this region. “Impact of Climate Change on Road Traffic Accidents” (research completed by Gulf Medical University, Ajman, UAE – Thumbay Research Institute for Precision Medicine.) Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These effects have caused problems globally in the environment, humans, animals, etc. Road traffic accidents are one of the events that contribute to the increase in mortality rates due to climate change and are leading cause of human loss globally. Weather changes have a big impact on occurrence of road traffic accidents, in fact high and low temperatures, precipitation, sunshine, wind speed and sandstorms have been associated with injuries and fatalities.
•
Studies show significant relation between RTAS and heavy rainfalls, cold weather, fogs, sandstorms and temperature with increasing numbers of accidents in the younger age group
•
Accidents occur more in the urban areas compared to rural areas
•
An increase of temperature causes accidents due to the effect of heat on the body. This can be due to altered emotions, increased irritability, increased reaction time and overall decreased concentration.
•
Majority of casualties during the pleasant weather are pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists as they tend to be outside more
•
While there are slippery roads and less visibility during rainfalls, drivers drive more carefully or don’t drive at all, hence decreased number of casualties
•
The Peltzman Effect is a theory which states that people are more likely to engage in risky behavior when security measures have been mandated. This includes new modern cars with extra safety measures that encourage the drivers to over speed and engage in dangerous maneuvers. The same applies to pedestrians – they tend to cross the road without looking assuming the driver will see him just because it’s a zebra crossing. Zebra crossing is supposed to protect them.
•
Cooling technology in the cars doesn’t evoke the feeling of hot and fatigue and lets the drivers forget that the pedestrians and cyclist have slower and sluggish reaction to the environment around them due to the heat
•
A new study has found that people get angry or grumpy in hot weather as stress hormones may rise in tandem with the thermometer. Higher temperatures, less rainfall and more drought were consistently linked to increased violence. With the global warming increasing, there are some scary implications – a generation of angry individuals.

Microsoft engineers reported that 99.9% of the account compromise incidents could have been avoided if the victims had multi-factor authentication (MFA) been enabled. MFA is an electronic authentication method that requires the user to provide two or more forms of identity verification before they’re allowed access to a website, network, or application.
It is widely known that it would take a supercomputer a few weeks to crack a 10-character password. And you might be tempted to think why someone would waste so much time trying to hack your account when Britney Spears or Bill Gates’ accounts would no doubt prove more lucrative targets. But the reality is that hackers have developed countless methods of stealing credentials and gaining unauthorized access to your accounts without having to crack them. Traditional passwords just aren’t secure enough anymore and this leaves all of us, who only rely on this method of authentication, exposed to cyber-criminals. 24
So, what is MFA?
MFA is split into 3 categories: 1. Something you know. Like a password or pin code. 2. Something you have. This is a physical object, such as a key or smart card. 3. Something you are. Biometric verification. This could be a fingerprint, retina scan, or voice recognition. At Al Tamimi & Company, we use at least 2 of the above and have recently deployed Microsoft Authenticator as our MFA application. By now, all of us would have experienced first-hand how it works.
1
2
Protects against stolen, weak, easy to guess/ crack passwords – phishing attempts are less effective. Protects internet exposed applications like Outlook and Teams by forcing us to approve or reject access.
NOTE: Never approve access if you did not initiate the connection
3
Allows us to bring our own devices (BYOD) – without MFA, it would be risky to allow personal devices access on to the firm’s network.
4
Compliance - this is the cost of doing business with most client and some government entities.
5
Better sleep – allows Colin to sleep better at night! 25
