Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) The three elementary types of developable surfaces are cylinders, cones and tangent surfaces of space curves. Cylinder surfaces are consisted of families of parallel lines. Cones are prismatic results when fold lines are produced around a cone surface. Tangent surfaces of special curves are formed by tangent lines of a curve. 2d Panelling. Pattern: Triangular

Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) The understanding of developable surface is the key element to create structure to achieve architectural ideas and designs. The ‘Greenhouse’ by Plasma Studio in Xi’an developed a large scale complex geometries into developable surfaces allowed the design to be fabricated through construction.

(Maximum 100 words) Digital fabracation is ‘ a generative medium’, much like hand drawing, which is a method of making using digitasl data to control fabrication. The introduction of digital fabracation makes the design esaier to edit by sructure.

Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) Folding a two- dimensional material will gain more stiffness and rigidity which can span distance and be self-supporting. Moreover, folding in two- dimension will be able to achieve more variation. It is also relatively economical.
