Digital Design - Module 01 Semester 1, 2018 Ningning Zhan (Tammy) (940752) Micheal Mack Studio 05
Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
According to Zeara Polo, it defines that a symbol represent assigned dynamic objects. This attribute is shared by signs which have uncertain relationship between the form and content. However, Diagrams are not aim to represent the dynamic objects or link the physical objects to concepts. Fundamentally they are created based on their usage and function.

Precedent Analysis
Fig. Binet, Helene. London 2001: Serpentine Gallery Pavilion / Daniel Libeskind, 2001. Photo, Serpentine Gallery,Lodon. Accessed March, 11,2018. https://libeskind.com/publishing/serpentine-gallery Top Left: Line Work of Module Top Right: Planar Module Left: Finished Module with Pattern and Thickness
Photos, plan view, side views and sections of the pavilion are provided. It is significant to understand the ground plan and figure out the relationship between side views and section. The whole module consists of six pieces and a base. According to the ground plan and side viiews, the location and height of each edge of the module can be determined.

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
Hertzberger argued that the functionality of the space should not be designed extremely explict and rigid constraning the user’s freedom. The space should be more receptive to different situations, or rather increase the ‘accommodating potential’. The Serpentine Pavilion designed by Daniel Libeskind is a abstract structure. There are twisted surface and intersected part existed in this pavilion. The uncommon structure leaves freedom for users to explore the usage of the space. Practically, it can offer shelter for users, while the enclosed strucuture let the sunlight get into the pavilion. It is in according to the idea of Hertzberger.

Week Two
Isometric
SE Isometric view of Pavilion The SE isometric view of Pavilion is chosen to show the whole module. Each piece can be seen in this view. It detailed illustrates how each piece twists. What is more, the angle of the corner is clearly show in the view. In additon, part of the base can be seen in this view, which shows how the sunlight get into the Pavilion.
5
Week Two Diagrams
Criculation Diagram
Threshold Diagram
The criculation diagram shows how people flow through the space. it shows the part where the upper structure intersected with the base, which means this part is not accessible. Moreover, the weight of the curve varies according the amout of people.
This diagram shows the entrance and the ‘in-between‘ space of the pavilion.
6
Appendix
Process
All the images of ground plan, side views and section were scaled and placed. The outlines of all the views were traced in illustrator.
7
Appendix Process
The problem was found, when adding the thinkness of each surface. Each surface is twisted that it’s not a planar surface. Therefore the extruded parts will overlap the surface. The problem was resolved by offsetting the edges of every surface and drawing the surface one by one.
8
Appendix
Process
According to the photos, two paths are added to make the diagram. There will be more people flowing into the pavilion rather than other place. How the upper structure intersects with the base was shown on the diagram, which shows the inaccessible parts of the pavilion. Therefore, all the circulations and threshold will avoid these parts.
9
The ‘make2d’ images in Rhino are exported into illustrator. The lines are changed to the different weight.
