NEW EXHIBIT

WONDERS

OF THE WORLD

The new temporary exhibit, Wonders of the World, features the world’s largest buildings and structures made entirely out of toothpicks and glue by artist Stan Munro, founder of Toothpick World. At a 1:164 scale, it’s the next best thing to seeing the majestic buildings in person to appreciate their vastness. By scanning QR codes at the exhibit, kids can learn how to make their own toothpick structures at home and even connect with Munro. There are also interactive engineering challenges throughout the museum in conjunction with this exhibit.

Drone Zone: You can learn how to fly a drone in this recently added exhibit space near the Idea Zone. Once you have the basics down, you can put your skills to the test and fly the drone through an obstacle course.

MOSI Marketplace: As we wait for the construction of the new Zydeco restaurant, you can get something to eat at MOSI Marketplace, whether it’s a grab and go sandwich or salad, ice cream or even a hot meal from the futuristic hot vending machine!

revamped favorite

Mission Moonbase got a super exciting revamp, extra thrilling as humans plan to head back to the moon. The experience of entering into the exhibit makes you feel as if you really are launching from Earth to a future Moonbase. “You queue up, there’s a countdown on the screen, and every 3-4 minutes the doors just magically open. And you step in and the doors close behind you and you launch yourself to the Moon. You spend about 90 seconds in orbit getting to the Moon where they tell you all of the challenges you are going to face and then once you land, the next set of doors open and you are on the lunar base and get to explore,” MOSI’s CEO John Graydon Smith says.

All the new and revamped additions are exciting, but that's not all. “Sometime in 2023, we hope to announce the plans of taking back the former IMAX building and turning it into the largest planetarium in the state of Florida,” Graydon says. “This isn’t the end of it. As Tampa grows, so does MOSI.”

The World’s FIRST Peppa Pig Theme Park Celebrates an Oinktastic First Year!

It’s great to be a kid in Florida, especially if you’re a little kid who loves Peppa Pig! The world’s first Peppa Pig Theme Park in Winter Haven celebrates its one-year anniversary this month, making this the perfect time for us to share some of our favorite things to do to help you plan your most oinktastic day ever!

Our Favorite Things

As you step inside Peppa Pig Theme Park, you instantly become immersed in Peppa’s world.

What was once a 2D adventure on TV transforms into a real-life 3D experience for preschoolers. The colors are vibrant, but even kids who are just getting to know this beloved character will not feel like they are in an “over the top” Peppa Pig environment.

You and the kids can explore Granny Pig’s Garden where you will find George’s Fort , Grandpa Pig’s Greenhouse, Madame Gazelle’s Nature Trail , Peppa Pig’s Treehouse and Rebecca Rabbit’s Playground . Or go on a high seas adventure on Granddad Dog’s Pirate Boat Ride and even meet Peppa and her family face-to-face!

We love that we can ride with our kids if they’re not quite ready to brave it alone, so it’s truly a place where all little kids can experience their first theme park rides. Grampy Rabbit’s Dinosaur

Adventure is a perfect example of a child being able to ride independently or with their parent right behind them.

There are six rides and six themed playscapes in all, including Daddy Pig’s Roller Coaster. Be sure to explore Peppa’s House as you make your way through the ride queue! Kids can play in Peppa’s kitchen and even sit on her couch for a photo. We also love the Fun Fair area of the park where kids can play carnival games for free! The ring toss and rubber ducky games were favorites of our kiddos. What’s really cool is that while the park was designed with little kids in mind, older siblings will enjoy it too.

Peppa Pig Merchandise

This is your one-stop shop for all things

Peppa Pig! From toys to even underwear to inspire little ones to complete their potty-training journey, there are several options here to take the fun home with you.

Miss Rabbit’s Diner

When your little piggies get hungry, pop into Miss Rabbit’s Diner for kid-friendly meals like PB&J, cheese pizza and more. Parents have lots of yummy options too, including flatbread and sandwiches. The Mud Cup and Muddy Puddle Milkshakes are also kid favorites.

Tickets

You can purchase single day tickets starting at $34 for ages 2 and older. If you want to add in a visit to LEGOLAND Florida Resort next door, the combo park ticket is $119. There are Annual Pass options as well. With the Gold Pass + Peppa Pig Theme Park, families can make oinktastic memories with Peppa and also enjoy LEGOLAND Florida Theme Park and LEGOLAND Water Park for $269.99. This also includes free parking, which is why we love annual pass options!

How to Stay Cool at the Park

Shade and splash pads are necessary features of a theme park in the summertime, and there are plenty of both at the park. In addition to shaded seating areas around the park, there are indoor areas like the Cinema where you can sit back and relax on giant pillows while your kiddos catch up on their favorite episodes of Peppa Pig.

The Muddy Puddles Splash Pad is a huge hit with the kids with its pint-sized waterslides and water play features.

Autism Friendly

LEGOLAND® Florida Resort, including Peppa Pig Theme Park, LEGOLAND Theme Park, LEGOLAND Water Park and the three on-site hotels, partnered with The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) to earn accreditation as a Certified Autism Center (CAC).

As part of this Resort-wide certification, IBCCES worked with Peppa Pig Theme Park to conduct staff-wide autism sensitivity and awareness training in addition to making more tangible updates to the in-park communications. The training reviews the areas of sensory awareness, environment, communication, motor and social skills, program development and emotional awareness and includes a comprehensive autism competency exam.

“We are passionate about being the Resort for families to build awesome vacation memories, and we are thankful to our partners at IBCCES for helping us be more welcoming and more inclusive to more families, including those with sensory needs,” says Kelly Hornick, Head of Marketing & Communications for LEGOLAND Florida Resort and Peppa Pig Theme Park.

In addition to staff training, IBCCES helped develop the Sensory Guides. These guides are posted near the entrance of every attraction, providing insight on how a child with sensory processing issues may be affected by each of the five senses. This information is intended to make it easier for parents and families to plan activities that satisfy their child’s specific needs and accommodations.

Meet Big John, the World’s Largest Triceratops

Coming this Summer to the Glazer Children’s Museum by Kate White

The Glazer Children’s Museum is expanding its exhibit space to fit something enormous! We are thrilled to announce a brand-new exhibit centered around Big John, the world’s largest Triceratops fossil, opening Memorial Day weekend. Housed in an immersive exhibit full of interactive, educational and playful elements, Big John will captivate curious guests and dinosaur lovers of all ages. We hope to see you this summer at this colossal exhibit, over 66 million years in the making!

TAKE A TOUR OF THE EXHIBIT

This brand-new exhibit expands the Museum’s third floor to the public to showcase the remarkable specimen, Big John, using our unique approach to playful learning. In the queue, you are guided with questions that stimulate curiosity. When did this creature live? How big was Big John? How was he discovered? As you turn the corner and begin your journey, these questions set the stage for exploration. We start with the story of how Big John was found and how he made his way to Tampa. Real fossils, maps, and photographs tell the story of unearthing this giant, while a geologic timeline depicts the Age of Dinosaurs.

BIG FACTS ABOUT BIG JOHN:

Big John holds the Guinness World Record for Largest Triceratops, measuring nearly 26 feet long.

He is estimated to be 5-10% larger than any other known Triceratops.

He was discovered in 2014 in the Hell Creek Formation of South Dakota.

Big John's skull is unique in that it is more than 75% complete.

Big John’s frill bears the mark of a traumatic injury, likely due to a fight with another Triceratops.

among the display for immersive, first-of-its-kind perspectives of fossils and other Cretaceous specimens. Live presentations will tell stories of how Big John may have lived and how he may have died.

Surrounding the central platform are various activities uniting art, pretend play and science to create true hands-on experiences that will inspire dinosaur fans of all ages. A balance of technology and physical interactive elements will create a memorable experience for everyone.

When you turn the corner, you are immediately face-to-face with Big John himself. A tunnel under his platform allows children and adults alike to crawl to viewing spaces

From New York to Plant City: the Story of a Wish Farms Strawberry

Plant City based Wish Farms, an international family business run by third-generation owner Gary Wishnatzki, recently celebrated its centennial anniversary. Fourth generation Wishnatzkis remain active in daily operations. Their headquarters, off I4 and partially designed by DIY Network’s Treehouse Guys, is impressively enchanting. While preparing for a freeze, Wishnatzki led me through headquarters—complete with a gym and personal trainer, dining area that feels like home and slide that exceeds childhood dreams. We talked family history, automation and strawberry shortcake.

TBPM: Share a bit of your family history.

GW: My grandfather, Jewish-Russian immigrant Harris Wishnatzki, arrived at Ellis Island in 1904 and sold fruits and vegetables from NYC pushcarts. Eventually, others joined him, and he grew a pushcart fleet. With a partner, he started wholesale business Wishnatzki and Nathel. In 1929, after establishing a buyer in Plant City, my grandfather came down and stayed. Until 2001, the company continued as he established it. We parted with the Nathel family and are now Wish Farms.

TBPM: What are your family values?

GW: Our core values are quality, integrity and responsiveness. We believe in treating people with respect. It’s about being fair— not taking advantage of anyone—and doing the right thing.

termined farm size: more kids meant more pickers. Henry B. Plant, the city’s namesake, brought the railroad to Plant City—enabling strawberry shipping to the northeast. Plant City emerged as the winter strawberry capital of the world.

TBPM: You started Harvest CROO Robotics. How does automation keep strawberries affordable?

GW: Robotic harvesting is the future of strawberries. There’s no other path forward. Human labor is growing unaffordable and unstainable. Our seasons, starting in late November and running through April, begin with new, handplanted plants; there are millions at just one of our farms.

TBPM:

What is working with family like?

GW: My dad and uncle ran the business from 1955, when my grandfather died, to the 80s. Brothers and opposites, they made it work by playing off each other’s strengths. It’s come full circle, as my daughter, son, and two sons-in-law are active in the business. Since it looks like the business is staying in the family, I’ve established a Board of Directors—helpful in mapping out individual roles.

Because agriculture is hands-on, it’s behind in automation. Picking strawberries is not one and done. The same plant is picked every three days and entails details like the berry’s color. In Florida, one plant produces about one pound of fruit per season.

TBPM: Thoughts on climate change? Impacts on your industry?

GW: My life experiences demonstrate the climate is in flux, but I can’t say with certainty it’s entirely manmade. I wonder what we can do to make the climate cooler. For strawberries, the warm climate hasn’t been bad. Freezes, however, have proven devastating.

What would your grandfather say about all of this?

TBPM:

GW: He couldn’t have imagined! We have the world’s largest contiguous strawberry farm. In his days, strawberries were luxury items never seen in grocery stores. In the 1920s, when he arrived, there were thousands of small growers. Family size de -

TBPM: What was testifying before congress like?

GW: It was an interesting experience before the House Agriculture Committee. They were working on a farm bill, and I talked to them about automation and the guest worker program.

16 TampaBayParenting.com FEBRUARY 2023
photo by Wish Farms photo by Wish Farms Third-generation owner of Wish Farms Gary Wishnatzki

TBPM: If you weren’t in agriculture, what would you be doing?

GW: Something in the music industry. Our family loves attending music festivals; it’s how our family foundation’s event, Pixie Rock, was born. I love discovering new music. Naming just a dozen groups I love is hard.

TBPM: Tell us about Wish Farms Family Foundation.

GW: Throughout the year, money goes into a single fund. Pixie Rock gave $143K to each Shriners Hospital and Feeding Tampa Bay. Monthly, we donate $1K to an employee-chosen non-profit. We also want our customers feeling good about both eating our berries and our company’s community efforts. Our labels read, “feel good, eat good, make a difference.” Customers can scan the label’s QR code to see how every purchase goes into the Foundation and is making community impact. My goal is that the Foundation will go on in perpetuity.

TBPM: What legacy do you aim to leave?

GW: That Harvest CROO Robotics saved the U.S. strawberry industry. Without automation, strawberries won’t be everyday items.

TBPM: You wrote a book. What was the writing process like?

GW: A lot of work. I learned even more about our family when researching and compiling everything for the book. Stories get lost and change over time. Before my father passed away, I asked him to write a book with his many interesting stories: from his days in the army to the beginnings of the business. I couldn’t convince him. After he passed, I started writing the stories. I thought the book was a great commemoration of our 100-year anniversary.

TBPM: What about Wish Farms’ wondrous workspace?

GW: We were working out of closets in our old space and outgrew it. Designing a new headquarters was a once in a lifetime opportunity. My criteria included building on a major road, potential for branding, and proximity to our growers. I wanted it to stand alone—with lots of light and windows. We created something special, and I feel it’s part of my legacy.

TBPM: What’s your favorite way to enjoy strawberries?

GW: I eat them on my cereal every morning. I love them on strawberry shortcake made with Bisquick biscuits.

FANCY FARMS MARKET

“Only two days are certain in a strawberry farmer’s life,” shares Fancy Farms owner Carl Grooms, “the day you pick your first berry and the day you pick your last.” Fancy Farms, one of Wish Farms partner growers, is located at 5204 Drane Field Road (Lakeland) and run by Carl and son Dustin. Kristi, Carl’s daughter, left corporate America after her mom’s cancer diagnosis and is three seasons into running Fancy Farms Market. The homemade strawberry cookies, shortcakes and shakes sweeten the drive out. “The women running the kitchen trained with my mom and aunt. I tap into my business strengths for running the front-ofthe-house.” In February, the market features chocolate covered strawberries. Come spring, Fancy Farms transforms into a vibrant flower field—a lovely opportunity for flower picking. Throughout the year, Fancy Farms hosts many homeschooling groups and supports Hillsborough County 4-H programs. Recent inductees into the Florida 4-H Hall of Fame, the Grooms family has learned that business always presents challenges; you just keep going. Check their website for u-pick information.

While Artificial Intelligence paves a path forward in agriculture, Wish Farms’ story remains pure. The climate cultivated by human dimensions stands irreplaceable. Wish Farms is a living testament to the power of hard work, family and land.

3. Apply a thin layer of glue to the heart then add the sequins. Set it aside and allow it to dry.

4. While the sequin heart is drying, use a pencil to draw the letters “i” and “u” on white cardstock. You can also use a Cricut to cut the letters.

5. Attach the foam adhesive mini circles to the back of the letters “i” and “u,” and then attach them to the card. It should read “i heart u.”

6. Finally, write a sweet message inside of the card, and then give it to a loved one or friend!

Say I Love You

with Lunchboxmafia's tips for Valentine's themed lunches and snacks!

My daughter’s love language is quality time. Mine is acts of service. These days, I love hanging out in her room listening to her tell stories about school and how her day went. She LOVES when I tell stories about when I was her age and what I went through in middle school. Times have sure changed but the teen struggles are the same!

Whether she’s challenged personally or academically, my goal is to simply relate to her. She doesn’t always need me to solve her problems but just knowing I’m here, listening and sharing brings her comfort. My husband and I cherish every age and stage of her childhood. As tough as parenting teens can be sometimes, we agree it's the most rewarding.

After traveling for work for so many years, I love being able to share dinner every night, make their lunches and spend time in the kitchen together. Now that lunch is the only meal we don't have together, given any opportunity, I make it special. If you've been following me on Instagram @lunchboxmafia you already know that I like using cookie cutters and veggie cutters to make lunch fun. Heart shaped cutters can be found at craft stores, party stores and Amazon.

Here are some tried and tested ideas for Valentine’s Day lunch fun.

CREATE A RED-THEMED LUNCH

I love using hollowed out peppers to serve chicken salad, tuna or hummus inside a lunchbox or on a snack board. Enjoy them with crackers or take a big bite out of your pepper. The crunch and sweetness from the veggies are so satisfying!

TWO INGREDIENT DONUTS SOUND TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? THEY'RE NOT!

Combine your favorite cake mix with 2 cups of applesauce and bake according to the instructions on the box. Let your kids add the icing and sprinkles.

KIDDIE CHARCUTERIE

Use smaller heart shaped veggie cutters for cheese and salami. Add colorful food picks and heart shaped doilies for a simple heartfelt touch.

VALENTINE'S KABOBS OR "CUPID'S ARROWS"

Cut rice crispy treats into 2-inch squares and alternate them on a stick with marshmallows and strawberries. In place of rice crispy treats, you can use brownie bites, donut holes or mini muffins.

SAY IT WITH WAFFLES

You can say "I love you a waffle lot" by putting their favorite sweet or savory pancake mix into a heart shaped waffle! Find the waffle iron on Amazon or at Target.

If you get your hands on a pretty chocolate box, save it and reuse it to create a charcuterie box to pack for a picnic or enjoy at home! It's so unexpected and makes for a great surprise.

Join me on Instagram and Facebook at @lunchboxmafia for video tutorials and more ideas for your entire family. Happy Valentine's day! Love, Jenny

Flamenco & Freedom

One year ago, dancer Irene Rodriguez took the biggest leap of her life, not on the dance floor—in real life. She left her home country of Cuba, where she was the principal dancer and director of the country’s most recognized flamenco company, and moved to Tampa with nothing more than the desire and drive to succeed in a free country. The enormous gamble paid off. Today, she is once again being recognized for her talent and teaching her craft to local students.

MR: Welcome to Tampa and congratulations on everything you’ve accomplished in such a short time.

IR: Thank you. I feel very proud and grateful for everything I have done in just one year in this incredible city. I have been teaching and choreographing for the Patel Conservatory at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, which honored me with the Outstanding Choreographer Award. I have also taught master classes for the University of South Florida's (USF) dance and theater departments (where I was awarded the Medal of Honor) and taught and choreographed at Howard Blake High School.

MR: I have heard from local moms that you’re also teaching young students, who absolutely love your classes!

IR: Yes, the Brucie Klay’s Dance Center in South Tampa has been the home of my flamenco classes where during the week and on Saturdays, there is no age limit to make your dream of dancing flamenco come true. I teach both adults and children 4 years old and up.

MR: What is flamenco to you?

IR: For me, flamenco is one of the most genuine dance manifestations for the expression of the soul.

MR: I’m fascinated by the flamenco “uniform”. What’s the meaning of each item?

IR: Flamenco is a dance genre that uses a lot of accessories, which I love. From the throbbing castañuelas (castanets), the sensuality of the abanicos (fans), the charm of the Manila shawls and Batas de Cola (longtail skirts), and the magic of the red flowers and peinetas (hair combs), flamenco is an endless creative universe.

MR: Besides learning a beautiful dance, what are other benefits of flamenco?

IR: There are so many! For kids, it helps develop their artistic and physical-motor skills, improves concentration, coordination [and] posture and teaches them discipline. They also tend to become more outgoing and relate better with children their age.

MR: What about for adults? It seems like a fun, but challenging, workout.

IR: It can be, but it’s a great way to stay active, release stress, control your weight and build confidence while making your dream of dancing come true. Flamenco and give yourself time to relax and do what you've always wanted!

MR: What is your best advice— both as a dancer and as someone who started over again in a new country— for anyone who wants to learn or try something new?

IR: My advice is always not to set limits, because I believe that the limits are only in our brain. Also, remember you can always start over, from scratch if necessary, if you have a dream to follow and a passion to fight for.

If you’re new to town or have simply never been, this is the year you’ll want to go! If you’ve been, come back! Sure, there are the things you’d expect at a state fair like farm animals and deep fried everything, but it’s so much more than that.

It truly is a family-friendly event, and this year, they’ve got even more fun in store for you and the kids! There is an area dedicated just for the little ones with rides and activities just for them like the Giraffe Menagerie and Great American Petting Zoo.

This is the place to go for bragging rights because we all know how kids love to share the big things they’ve tried for the first time, like a new ride. The Florida State Fair’s Midway is the largest midway in North America with more than 90 rides! There are even several rides for the wee ones and of course the family favorite, the Ferris wheel.

LITTLE FARM HANDS EXHIBIT

This adorable area is designed just for children ages 2-7 to explore and learn more about local agriculture. It’s hands-on and inside the cutest red barn you’ve ever seen!

THE ENTERTAINMENT

Here are 7 Things to Know About America’s Funniest Dad, Jim Gaffigan

For years, Jim Gaffigan has been a household name. Best known for his stand-up comedy, the comedian brings his latest show, The Dark Pale Tour, to Tampa's Straz Center from Feb. 9-11. Not only will guests be treated to his hilarious antics about being a parent and dealing with life’s crazy challenges, but these shows will also be filmed for his newest upcoming comedy special.

Choosing The Straz as his next filming location has been exciting for both fans and those involved with the performing arts center. “I love Jim Gaffigan’s work and his comedy,” says Greg Holland, president and CEO of The Straz Center. “I’m so impressed that he’s chosen to film The Dark Pale Tour here. It speaks to what the Straz is.”

One of the things Jim is known best for is his take on parenting. He and his wife Jeannie are parents to five children, Marre, Jack, Katie, Michael and Patrick - ranging from ages 10 to 18. “So much of his humor is built around the warmth he feels for his family,” Holland says. “He speaks to that brilliantly.”

We recently had the chance to chat with Gaffigan about his upcoming show as well as his family, new projects and his ties to Tampa. Be sure to scan the QR code for our full-length Q&A, but in the meantime, here are seven things to know about him.

28

1He’s a former Tampa resident

Right after he graduated from college, Gaffigan moved to Tampa and lived in an apartment right off Bayshore. He insists that he’s far from an expert on the Bay Area, but he has fond memories of frequenting local establishments around town and loves returning to perform. “I'm super excited that I’m filming in Tampa because of a couple of factors. I've obviously performed in Tampa numerous times and always had a great time. But I also feel like Western Florida has a lot of Midwesterners, and so being a Midwesterner, there’s a feel of familiarity there too.”

3A lot of his content is inspired by his family

With five children, Gaffigan has had his fair share of parenting adventures. A majority of his comedy is inspired by his wife and kids, which many parents can relate to. “I would say that they are an endless source of material. And if you're not complaining about your kids, you're not present enough.” In addition to focusing on them on stage, they’ve also been a big part of his career in other ways. “Luckily for me, I've been able to travel a lot with my kids. I would say like the past three times I've performed in Tampa, my kids have been with me. So, I will strategically plan tours around summer, Christmas or spring break, so some of that is being very tactical with how you do shows and bringing everyone with you.”

5His content is kept “clean” so it can still be family-friendly

One thing you won’t see in Jim’s comedy is profanity or anything that can’t be heard by ears of all ages. And though he keeps his comedy “clean,” it hasn’t deterred him from being one of the most popular comedians out there. It stems from his roots: Cursing just wasn’t a thing in the small Indiana town where he grew up. While in New York City, where he currently resides, “If you’re cursing a lot, it’s just how some people talk.” He noted that it also gives kids the freedom to enjoy his material. “My kids could look at my material and they wouldn't be offended or shocked or embarrassed. But then again, all kids are embarrassed of their parents, right?”

7He’s voiced familiar characters in children’s movies and will play a major role in an upcoming Disney film

2The Dark Pale Tour is based on events that took place in 2020

With the COVID pandemic taking over the world in 2020, Jim knew that was one thing that everyone everywhere could relate to. He took relatable topics such as distance learning, mask-wearing and quarantining with his family and turned them into hilarious bits. “After having gone through the pandemic, that's kind of set in just in like the past couple of years that we've all dealt with it.” Gaffigan says the material for The Dark Pale tour will be a little bit darker than some of his previous material, but that audiences like that. “You develop a relationship with people that come to shows and you know the expectation is that it's gonna be funny and that's the most important thing.

But it also evolves.”

4He’s been in the industry for over 30 years

When Gaffigan decided to take on comedy, he didn’t even consider that he would end up doing it for a living. “Thirty years ago, it was not really a realistic occupation. I mean, there were people that could do it and make a living, but it would be hard to support a family.” The rise of YouTube and satellite radio has transformed Gaffigan’s career to where he now performs in theaters and other major venues. “You can do it and afford a family of five kids, which is amazing.”

6

He’s also a TV star, movie star, best-selling author and Grammy nominee

In addition to stand-up, Gaffigan has written several best-selling books including “Dad is Fat, Food: A Love Story,” and “When Life Gives You Pears.” He’s also starred in numerous TV shows such as “Law & Order,” “My Boys,” “That 70’s Show,” and “The Jim Gaffigan Show” and movies including “Super Troopers,” “13 Going on 30,” and “Chappaquiddick.” Jim has released numerous comedy albums and is currently nominated for his seventh Grammy for his latest release, “Comedy Monster.”

Your kids may recognize Jim’s voice from several animated roles such as Van Helsing in “Hotel Transylvania 3” and 4, and Lorenzo Paguro in Disney/Pixar’s “Luca.” “For ‘Hotel Transylvania 3,’ I brought my kids and I think that was the first time my youngest, who probably was 6 at the time, was really impressed. He was like, ‘That's you doing that voice!’ Also, for Luca because Pixar is such a part of childhood … Those Pixar movies are so good that I think they were really impressed by that.” This year, families can watch Gaffigan play the role of Smee alongside Jude Law’s Captain Hook in Disney’s live-action “Peter Pan & Wendy.”

Kids to Know:

Jordan Parramore

“It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” — Maya Angelou. As we honor the work and contributions of Black leaders in history and today, Dr. Maya Angelou’s reference to “diversity” is all-encompassing. Beauty and strength in diversity comes when we also recognize differences in ability, talent and spirit. Our Kid to Know this month is a shining example of how the very thing that makes him different is also his greatest strength.

TBPM: What motivated you to start a business at 8 years old?

JP: One of the things that motivated me at the age of 8 was actually my love for Legos. The minute I made money, my parents took me to the Lego Store, and I would purchase huge builds to create. I remember approaching my dad (Carl) to tell him that I wanted to start a lemonade stand. Once I connected my mom (Audrey) to the conversation, “Jordan’s Juice Bar” was created.

TBPM: How did you become interested in the culinary arts? How has this shaped the transformation of your business to include dessert treats?

JP: I really love all things food-related. As a little kid, I watched the Food Network and other food channels more than other TV programming. My parents taught me to cook and enjoy being in the kitchen. One of my favorite memories was getting a chance to meet one of my favorite bakers in Fort Worth, Texas, who had won competitions on the Food Network. It is a dream of mine to be on one of the cooking channels. When it comes to cooking, it is fun, and you get to come up with creations that look amazing and taste amazing. Every year, my Grandma and Papa in Virginia send me tools to cook with. One is a mini waffle maker, which I love creating cake batter waffles with for breakfast.

year donating to A Kid’s Place, I am considering adding a turkey drive for at least 10 families in Tampa Bay.

TBPM: From neighborhood Farmers’ Markets to an upcoming shared kitchen, your business has grown so much that you’re even meeting with financial advisors. Why do you think you’ve been so successful, and what can you teach others about what it takes to grow a business in eight years?

JP: One of the reasons I feel I am successful is because I believe in myself, and I can learn just like anyone else in the world. Also, my parents taught me to follow what I enjoy doing. Now having my business, working at Busch Gardens, and going to school keeps me motivated to work hard at everything I do. I am learning through my parents about retiring early and how you have to save to do that. If I am making money now at this age, I think it’s important to save now and not wait till later. Also, one of my attributes that has helped me get this far is my perseverance and never giving up. I always keep going and believe in what I touch.

High School and work at Busch Gardens. What are your goals for this year in school and work, and what hobbies do you enjoy outside of your regular schedule?

JP: One of my goals for school is to start next year looking for scholarships for college so I can study Culinary Arts or Hotel Restaurant Management. For my junior year of school, I would love to run for Junior King Court, with The Cocoa Bomb Kid stance: just believe in yourself. At work, I would like to move into becoming a ride operator. Outside of school and work, I am a true gamer. Fortnite is one of my all-time favorite video games.

TBPM: Something tells me you’ll make history- between incorporating giveback in your life’s work to pursuing your passion and also learning to monetize it, the sky is truly the limit for Jordan Parramore! As we celebrate Black History this month, tell us about a black leader that has inspired you along the way.

TBPM: Let’s talk about

impact you’ve made on the lives of others. Please share how you became involved with local foster children. How has this impact grown year after year?

JP: During the pandemic, my mom, brother, and I were chatting about how we could donate to A Kid’s Place in Brandon. My mom was actually just going to donate to a few children, and I mentioned we should donate to all the children. We did it! The following year, I used my business to get toys donated. Every Friday, I would post ads on social media asking for toys in exchange for my Cocoa Bombs. Guess what? I had 100 toys that year to take to A Kid’s Place! The toys literally took over my parents’ entire living room floor. This year, in my third

TBPM: Though you were diagnosed with autism when you were two years old, you realized many years later that you had something that made you different and special. How do you explain what being autistic means and how do you advocate for other kids with special needs?

JP: Being autistic is being me. I advocate to my friends who may have special needs to let them know about job opportunities. When I explain autism, it is no different really, it’s just that I may think and see some things differently. It may also take me a little longer to get something, but I am still able to understand. One of the good things in school and at work is there are accommodations for me. The accommodations at work are there for me when I struggle to understand, but I know we all have struggles, and we all also have great amazing attributes. Every one of us is needed to make the world go around.

TBPM: In addition to being a young entrepreneur, you also go to Wharton

JP: My number one mentor would be my dad, Carl Parramore. He served in the military, retired and graduated from Auburn. He even started his own business, and he continues to motivate me in my own business. I am also inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr. in pursuing my dreams. It’s my dream to change how people view those with special needs through the work I do, which demonstrates that we can do anything that anyone else in the world can do.

TBPM: What do you enjoy doing most with your family in Tampa Bay?

JP: This is going to sound funny: One of the things I enjoy doing in Tampa when I am not working at Busch Gardens is to head back in as a visitor in the park. If I can pick two things, I also like Armature Works and the Riverwalk to take in all they have to offer in the variety of foods.

Moms to Know

Kiva Williams

While Black History Month (or any month that recognizes and celebrates marginalized communities) is important for reinforcing our understanding of American history, we have reached a time when it is not only reasonable, but also quite simple to honor and support Black heroes and pioneers every single day. Most likely, you’re doing it already. And if, by chance, examples of Black culture and achievements that surround us daily are not familiar or recognizable, this local mother helps to make them known. From her collaborative events and her nonprofit organization to her well-established foodie blog and national media invitations, Kiva Williams is truly an inspirational mom to follow, support and befriend.

TBPM: From the Tamron Hall Show, Good Morning America and multiple local media appearances for The Fun Foodie Mama, Mahogany Kids Fine Arts Foundation, Tampa Bay Black Excellence Challenge and your own PR clients, 2022 was truly a year that established the foundation for many of your professional brands. What does 2023 look like for Kiva Williams, your personal brand?

KW: Wow! When I sit back and think about all of the things I accomplished in 2022, I can't help but smile! I'm truly grateful that I'm in a space professionally where I'm not afraid to step out and tap into my many talents. For me personally, 2023 will be about securing the brands that I've started and taking my vision for each to the next level.

TBPM: As entrepreneurs, both you and your husband have found unique ways to combine your work with your passions and your children. Where does the drive, creativity and unwavering dedication come from?

KW: For both of us, our children are our greatest motivation. We know that we have three children's futures in our hands, and we want to do everything in our power to set them up for success. Also for me, I started my brand as a family blog and my nonprofit focuses on children, so it's only right to have my own children at the core of what I do.

TBPM: As someone that I see as a true ‘Community Hero,’ who is your Hero?

KW: I love that you called me a "Community Hero" because I truly do care about my community, and I think of it as a privilege to impart and impact any way that I can. When I think of my own personal heroes, my parents immediately come to mind. My mother was born with sickle cell anemia, and she has faced breast cancer twice. My father comes from humble beginnings, and took a leap of faith as a family man with a wife and two young kids to move us overseas to Germany for eight years to pursue a better life. I can't think of two more courageous people in my immediate life that I could look up to more, and I am motivated and inspired by them daily. I would be remiss not to mention MLK Jr. as my hero as well. I stand on his shoulders, and am grateful for what he stood for and fought for all Americans.

TBPM: The mission of Mahogany Kids Fine Arts Foundation is to empower minority youth through music, art and dance. Can you share what inspired you to create this nonprofit group and how you became connected to the arts?

KW: As a child I was heavily involved in performing arts and developed a love for dance so much so that I pursued a degree in dance at the University of South Florida. There I worked on mastering my dance technique in hopes of pursuing dance as a career professionally. Unfortunately, I did not follow my dreams of moving to New York City. Not following my dreams led me to want to tap back into my love of the arts years later, and hence, my nonprofit was formed.

TBPM: How can the Tampa Bay community support Mahogany Kids Fine Arts Foundation? In what ways can children join the events you have planned?

KW: We are always looking for community partnerships! Please email us to inquire about partnerships or to join our newsletter to stay in the know about upcoming events. info@mahoganykidsfineartsfoundation.org

TBPM: Let’s talk about the Tampa Bay Black Excellence Challenge and how your collaboration with Karimah Henry (@craftingafunlife) has supported so many Black-owned businesses. What was your initial vision for this project, how does the challenge work, and how does this work fulfill you?

KW: We wanted to showcase women coming together in support of a greater good. Individually, we enjoy supporting Black-owned businesses but joined forces to amplify our voices. Making it into a game puts a fresh spin on our overall message of supporting minority-owned Tampa Bay based businesses. Follow us on Instagram @tampabaybec to learn more about the challenge.

TBPM: In February, we have the opportunity to learn about and celebrate Black History Month in so many ways. What does this month mean to you, and what do you think the most important takeaway is for families in Tampa Bay?

KW: My family looks forward to BHM every year. We explore documentaries, visit cultural art exhibits in the Tampa Bay area, as well as patronize Black owned businesses. Attending local cultural events throughout the month is a great way for the Tampa Bay area to get involved and celebrate Black History Month.

TBPM: What do you and your family love to do most in Tampa Bay?

KW: We love the Tampa Riverwalk! Taking a low key family stroll while enjoying the downtown sights is the perfect family outing for us.

Black History Takes Center Stage in Hillsborough Schools

Who is Barack Obama? Who is George Washington Carver? Who is the Father of Black history?

On a Wednesday afternoon two days before winter break, about 40 students gathered in the media center at Chiles Elementary School to answer those questions, and many more.

They are members of Chiles’ Black History Brain Bowl Team.

Hillsborough County Public Schools joined forces with the Hillsborough Alliance of Black School Educators (HABSE) to create the Black History Brain Bowl. Each school in Hillsborough County creates a team, and during January and February, these teams compete against one another in Black History trivia.

Chiles took it one step further, however. It had so much interest that the school created several teams that will compete against each other in a school-wide competition.

and the team’s co-sponsors. “I think this team is important,” Rosen says. “I think the students need to have good role models and learn about history. They need to feel pride. They’re learning about Black scientists, educators, and inventors. I see the pride in the students’ faces and it makes me very happy.”

Brown agrees: “Having wide diversity in our school, this allows students to learn more about their heritage and gives them a chance to see themselves in these important people.

The team meets once a week after school for an hour. They have discussions, take notes, use flash cards and even play Black History Jeopardy!

Arwa Ahmed is a 5th grade student at Chiles and captain of the competition team that will compete in the district-wide Black History Brain Bowl. “I joined the team because it’s really fun to learn more about African American heroes that helped us form this world,” she said. “My favorite person is Harriett Tubman. I love learning about her. She really helped change this world in a lot of ways.”

It's those types of comments that make all the work worthwhile for Ms. Rosen and Ms. Brown.

“It’s important that students learn about the contributions of Black History young,” Rosen states. “If you feel pride in where you come from and who you are, you’re going to have a better chance at being successful in life.”

For Ahmed, that success begins now.

“I think we are going to win the first-place trophy at the district competition,” she says. “Just like we did last year!”

The finals of the Black History Brain Bowl for elementary, middle and high schools will be held Feb. 11 at Middleton High School.

Benefits of Reading Out Loud to Children

One of the best things we can do for our children is to read to and with them. Reading aloud anything—a picture book, a comic book, a fairy tale, books about insects, anything your child is interested in—will yield benefits, including for our neurodiverse and non-English speaking listeners. It does not matter what you read, nor how well you read. Creating a routine of reading with your child for just 15 minutes a day, starting as young as 6 months, will give them the benefits of increased vocabulary, reading comprehension and the ability to pay attention, and it can even reduce stress. Reading at bedtime is a wonderful way to help your child settle down for a good night’s rest. The benefits continue as children develop, so do not stop reading to your child once they can read on their own.

For tips on what or how to read with your child, or to bolster your confidence as a reader, pick up “The Read-Aloud Handbook” by Jim Trelease, “How to Raise a Reader” by Pamela Paul, or “Bringing Up Bookmonsters” by Amber Ankowski.

Your Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative (HCPLC) system has various resources to support your reading and to

give your child that “read to” experience whenever you are not available. To find physical books particularly suited to the occasion, search “read-aloud” in the online library catalog (HCPLC.org/books).

STORY TIMES

HCPLC branches offer in-person story times for children from birth to 7 years old, including a family-centered story time and a virtual evening story time. As well as having fun at these events, parents will learn techniques they can practice at home. Visit HCPLC.org/StoryTime for more information. You can access recorded story times on our YouTube channel if you cannot participate in person. Search @TampaHillsLib to find recordings for each age group for your family to enjoy. Recordings of bilingual and even a few trilingual story times can be found as a separate playlist on the channel.

BOOKS WITH AUDIO

As your child becomes an independent reader, pick up Vox Books or Wonderbooks from the library. Both are types of print books with

built-in audio players, and no other equipment is necessary for your child to have a read-along experience. Fiction and nonfiction titles are available. You can see what is available by searching the online catalog for “children’s audiobooks.”

DIGITAL AUDIOBOOKS & eBOOKS

An extensive collection of audiobooks and read-along ebooks are available 24/7 through TumbleBooks, MyON, Axis 360 and Overdrive/Libby. Check HCPLC.org/Kids for a complete listing of options.

The Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library offers these and many more resources for a family of readers. Explore your local branch or visit HCPLC.org to discover books, magazines, graphic novels, comic books, and more!

Olsen’s favorite read-aloud book is “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak, in which an overly imaginative little boy, sent to bed without his supper, sails to the land of the wild things where he becomes their leader.

When starting the process towards perfect teeth, it can be intimidating to consider the numerous options. Many think of braces as painful or unattractive. Contemporary methods are far from this, however, and at Imagine, you can learn all about Invisalign, or opt for traditional braces in peppy rose gold, blue or even rainbow brackets. Other unique offerings here include “twinkles” or tooth jewelry, and the Imagine Synapse Dental Pain Eraser, which uses Advanced Pulsewave Technology to block pain signals. You don’t have to wait until you have a problem; at Imagine, you can ask about Early Interceptive Orthodontics, which can reduce the risk of oral injuries, cavities and tooth decay, and help prevent more expensive treatments later.

Patients feel instantly at home here, whether they are seeing Dr. Christman, Dr. Chacon or Dr. Morris, who are all committed to building their patients’ self-esteem and self-confidence by improving their smile. With free consultations and payment plans, there are options for every patient here.

and veneers, teeth whitening, Invisalign, dentures and partials and emergency dentistry, plus treatment of periodontal disease.

Active family involvement is encouraged: Parents are welcome to stay in the rooms to understand treatments, and patients are shown videos so they can clearly understand their procedures. Hygienists play an active role educating patients with mouth models so that each person can maintain a beautiful smile with minimal invasive treatment.

Treating patients like family stretches beyond business. Dr. Monica Baez Morgan also founded Dentistry with Love, which provides free dental care one day a year to those with financial needs.

Heart of Gratitude

For 16 years, the Knowles family of Lithia dreaded the moment their son, Oscar, would have to endure another open-heart surgery to replace his leaky valve. Thanks to a new piece of equipment called the Alterra Adaptive pre-stent, Oscar became a candidate for a transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement procedure that requires an incision the size of a pencil eraser and one night in hospital—an almost magical new option.

“Beat, beat, whoosh. Beat, beat, whoosh.”

That’s what a young trainee pediatrician heard listening to the newborn’s heart. Doctors reassured parents Michael and Nicola that although the murmur indicated a hole in Oscar’s heart, it would likely heal by the 4-week visit.

Instead, the devastated parents learned that their baby had a quartet of serious heart conditions known as tetralogy of Fallot, which would require open-heart surgery. Following the procedure, they spent 16 weeks in hospital with their infant son on life support. As other babies entered the NICU, recovered and left, Oscar suffered through surgery to close the hole and enlarge his pulmonary valve, followed by complications, infections and additional surgery. “It was the worst time of my life,” Nicola recalls.

When they were finally discharged, it was with one ominous caveat: At adolescence, Oscar would require another open-heart surgery to replace the pulmonary valve.

The family moved from the United Kingdom to Texas when Oscar was 3, and then four years later to Florida. At every annual checkup, Michael would think, “Please not this time. Not this time.” Determined to shield Oscar, they’d take him to Toys ‘R Us for treats after appointments. Oscar did his best not to worry his parents, whose love and pride shines through in every interaction between the tight-knit trio. An avid reader and movie buff, he thrived writing

screenplays and serving on the technical crew in Newsome High School’s drama department.

When Oscar was a junior, the family got the news they were dreading: time to replace the valve. But the announcement came with an unexpected reprieve. St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital Pediatric Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Jeremy Ringewald told them about a new implant that could help avoid open heart surgery, the Alterra pre-stent.

For the past decade or so, some patients needing a pulmonary valve replaced were able to receive something called a Melody valve, which was threaded through a vein in the leg and implanted in the pulmonary artery, eliminating the need for open-heart surgery. However, the Melody valve was too small to replace most patients' pulmonary valves. A newer, larger valve called the SAPIEN 3 allowed transcatheter pulmonary valve replacement in more patients, but 70-80% of patients were still ineligible. The Alterra is a game changer. It is threaded through a vein in the leg to the main pulmonary artery to where the valve needs to go. It then pops open into an hourglass shape, filling the main pulmonary artery securely but also with a narrowed area or landing zone in the center. Dr. Ringewald then threads the SAPIEN valve through the same vein, inflates its delivery balloon, and inserts it snugly into that landing zone. The catheter is removed, and the procedure is

over.

Since last summer, Dr. Ringewald has performed two or three of these procedures monthly. Only the second implant center (and the busiest one) in Florida, and the only implanting center in Tampa Bay, St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is one of a dozen or so in the country. He has treated people from ages 9 to 70, but there is no upper limit to who can benefit.

When Dr. Ringewald told them Oscar was a perfect candidate, Michael and Nicola were shaken by relief. “After our first meeting, we said, he’s the man to do it,” Nicola says. “He made it very easy to decide to put your child’s life in his hands.”

For his part, Dr. Ringewald admits that he loves to see families cry tears of joy. “That will never get old.”

Oscar underwent the procedure on Dec. 28, 2022. He was home Dec. 29 to see the new year with a new valve. Although parts of the procedure—especially the anticipation—were frightening and confusing, Oscar is almost completely back to normal now, but with a kind of energy he had never felt before.

“I didn’t know this was a way to feel,” the soft-spoken teen says. “I thought what I felt was like how everyone felt. I feel less held back, less restrained.”

“It just feels clearer to be.”

Seven is Special: Maya’s Journey to a Healthy Heart

The number seven is significant in Maya’s life.

She had her first heart transplant when she was just 7 months old, spent seven months in the cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, and had her second heart transplant at 7 years old.

Born with opiates in her system, Maya never received prenatal or postnatal care. Now 8 years old, Maya is the youngest of six siblings, and the daughter of Brent and Valerie, who became her medical foster parents right after her first heart transplant when she was a baby. They were able to officially adopt Maya when she was 3 years old.

“There’s not a difference in adoption,” Brent says. “Your kids are your kids. They’re still gifts from the Lord. Your kids are your

crown. Maya was born relatively healthy, and she is so strong. She's a fighter.”

Brent is also a pastor at a nearby church in Pinellas Park, Florida, and runs an orphanage in Haiti with his wife, Valerie. They felt that being Maya’s parents was their calling. Unfortunately, Maya became sick with pneumocystis pneumonia in 2021. The lung fungus is more likely to affect kids like Maya who have had a transplant or cancer and are immunocompromised. She was hospitalized for 34 days, fighting for her life.

“During that time is when she almost died,” Brent says. “Her kidneys, lungs and other organs were affected. That hospital stay was the most difficult.”

Maya survived, but remained lethargic and unlike herself. She ended up back in the hospital where the heart team determined

she would need another heart transplant, and Maya and her family began their seven-month stay while waiting for her new heart.

“222 days in the hospital is the official count,” Brent reflects.

When Maya finally received her new heart, her successful second transplant surgery was led by James Quintessenza, M.D., co-director of the Heart Institute and chief of cardiovascular surgery at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.

Within days, Maya was up and moving around, never losing her big smile and spirited personality. Soon after, she was cleared to go home. Staff who stood by her side and cared for her for months on end lined the halls for an emotional discharge day celebration. There were tears, cheers and lots of smiles.

“We are very happy for Maya and her family as she continues to do so well,” says Dr. Quintessenza. “It’s so fulfilling for our team of dedicated providers, who have cared for her since infancy, to be part of her journey.”

“She is like night and day,” says a proud Brent. “This is a different kid. She’s eating everything in sight. She is up at 7:30 every morning and going 100 miles an hour, and the doctor said her heart is beating like crazy.”

Maya now sees transplant cardiologist Alfred Asante-Korang, M.D., who has managed the care of heart transplant, cardiomyopathy and heart failure patients for more than 20 years.

“Maya is an incredibly brave young girl who, in spite of having undergone two grueling heart transplants, always demonstrates a captivating and infectious personality,” says Dr. Asante-Korang (also known as Dr. AK).

April will mark one year since Maya went home with her new heart, a day she and her family will never forget—and will forever hold close to their hearts.
