MOSI STEAMing Ahead into a Future of Growth and Innovation

A lot has changed in the world and in Tampa Bay in the 60-plus years since MOSI first opened its doors. Just as our community has grown and evolved, science and technology have too, taking us to frontiers we never could have imagined decades ago. The museum has also evolved, and while it’s not expanding its footprint, it is continuing to grow in new and innovative ways.

We’re revisiting MOSI’s CEO John Graydon Smith to talk about the progress so far and what’s on exhibit this summer.

TBPM: What’s on the horizon at the museum?

JGS: We have the plan in place, but it’s baby steps to getting there. Six months or so ago, we rolled out miniature golf, SciLinx, out in the Science Park. We added retail and some food and beverage options for guests. We started construction on the butterfly garden, which is now built; we’re just waiting for butterflies. We’re waiting on some permitting for the restaurant and bar in partnership with Zydeco Brew Works in Ybor City—they are opening a second location here. (Expected to open this summer.)

And then we’re continuing to move toward the reopening of what was the IMAX dome as the largest planetarium in the state of Florida. That will really be the end piece of everything and all of these pieces sort of just stack on one another, improving the visitor experience and hopefully growing the audience for MOSI.

TBPM: Let’s talk about the plans for the new planetarium—what is the vision once it opens?

JGS: Our new planetarium will still have the night sky and educational elements as a core component, but thanks to technology, we’ll also be able to do full digital dome movies. We’ll be able to do laser music

shows. The fact that the infrastructure is already here, to drop a couple million dollars worth of new technology and have the largest one in the state of Florida—one of the top 10 or 15 in the entire world— is something Tampa should really rally around.

TBPM: When we hear the word growth, we often think of size. But that’s not the case for MOSI. What does growth mean for the museum now?

JGS: For a long time, MOSI was growing, but I would argue growing for the sake of growing and not growing as thoughtfully as we needed to. One of the big differences is we don’t need massive buildings to do massive things. You can put on a pair of goggles and find yourself on the moon or underwater—you don’t need to have all of the square footage to have the same types of experiences thanks to the technology that exists today, so we’re now repurposing the square footage we have and better activating it in different and unique ways.

COVER STORY
12 TampaBayParenting.com JULY 2023
MOSI's Space Park is now home to the new Butterfly Garden in the screened cage to the left. The former IMAX dome will soon be home to Florida's largest planetarium.

TBPM: Speaking of new things, MOSI has new mascots, the S.T.E.A.M. Team! Tell us more about this inspiring group of kids and their new interactive exhibit for the summer, the S.T.E.A.M. Team Superhero Training Academy.

JGS: S.T.E.A.M. Team is a collection of everyday students who also have found their inner superhero through a combination of physical and mental activity. They show how staying fit keeps you sharper in school and keeping yourself sharp in school allows you do more on the football field and basketball court, so this exhibit is a great combination of staying physically active and learning about science, technology, engineering, arts and math. The Superhero Training Academy helps kids unlock their inner superhero.

TBPM: Any tips on how to best experience the S.T.E.A.M. Team Superhero Training Academy exhibit this summer?

JGS: There are several stations including a rock wall, martial arts garden and snowboarding balance board. You pick up your action guide when you first walk in and there are stamp stations throughout, so you want to do every activity to get your stamp.

Meet MOSI’s S.T.E.A.M. Team

We are also supplementing with other activities like Make Your Own Superhero Mask. The show is not just confined to itself; there are also S.T.E.A.M. Team elements throughout the rest of the museum kids and their families can explore.

TBPM: MOSI is more than just a museum.

JGS: The core of what MOSI does is educating young people, so sure we do it through the museum floor and interactive activities, but we more so do it through field trips, educational classes, hands-on learning experiences with our educators and camps. We don’t use volunteer docents to try and teach you stuff; we have paid staff educators who in many cases are trained schoolteachers.

Every weekend, we have scout groups spending the night here in the museum, so they’re exploring the museum side, but they’re also doing classroom activities, badge programs—that is really the soul of MOSI.

SBronson Burner, star athlete, harbors a deep love for science and spends his off-field hours conducting experiments in the chem lab. And when the call to action arises, he becomes SCIENCE HERO!

Go Scalloping

Scalloping season is here! In Pasco County, the season has expanded to 37 days from July 1 through Aug. 6. You’ve got a bit more time to go on this underwater egg hunt in the Citrus and Hernando County areas where scalloping season is from July 1 through Sept. 24.

One of our favorite spots to go scalloping is outside of Homosassa. You can make a weekend getaway out of it and schedule a visit to nearby state parks like Weeki Wachee Springs State Park and Homosassa Springs State Park.

We recommend booking your scalloping adventure with a tour guide as they are on the water every day and know not only the waterways, but also where you’re likely to find the most scallops. Weekdays will be less crowded, and morning tours are always a good idea as Florida weather in the afternoon can be unpredictable. You can find a tour by visiting discovercrystalriverfl.com. You can also find a local restaurant in the area that will cook up your scallops for you!

july Summer Fun in Tampa Bay

Soak in the final month of summer break with some of these staff favorite activities in Tampa Bay!

Visit one of the best beaches in the country, Caladesi Island State Park:

Caladesi Island State Park has long been one of our favorite family-friendly beaches in Tampa Bay, and this gem is back in the national spotlight, recognized by Dr. Beach in his 2023 list of Top 10 Beaches in America.

The easiest way to reach the beach is by the Caladesi Island Ferry from Honeymoon Island. Roundtrip tickets are $18 for adults and $9 for kids ages 6-12. Keep in mind that beach carts and wagons are not allowed on the ferry for safety reasons. But don’t fret, there are plenty of amenities at the beach including restrooms, showers and a small shop, and you can even rent a beach umbrella and chairs if you don’t want to bring them.

Go nose to snout with Big John at Glazer Children’s Museum:

If you haven’t had a chance to experience Big John, the world’s largest fossil triceratops, add this to your list of things to do! Museum admission is $18. If you have dino loving adults visiting this summer, they can go too—the museum has opened its doors to all, not just people with kids, so everyone can meet Big John. bigjohn.com

16 TampaBayParenting.com JULY 2023

Visit the new Black History exhibit, “Travails and Triumphs,” at the Tampa Bay History Center

This new permanent exhibit tells the 500-year story of Black History in Tampa Bay. You’ll find the exhibit on the third floor of the museum as you come up from the main staircase.

There are five stations with interactive screens that tell stories through maps. You’ll learn about Estevanico, one of the enslaved Africans brought to Tampa in the early 1500s and one of the earliest names of an African we have on record. He developed a relationship with Native Americans and served as a guide and interpreter for the exposition, according to curator Fred Hearns.

While you’re at the museum, be sure to stop for lunch at the Columbia Café and maybe even take a stroll along the Riverwalk and play at the nearby Cotanchobee Park playground behind Amalie Arena. tampabayhistorycenter.com

Book an animal encounter at ZooTampa

ZooTampa offers some incredible animal experiences including the Giant Tortoise Encounter, which is open to all ages. One of our other favorites is the Indian Rhino Feeding, which is open to kids ages 5 and older. There are nine different signature encounters you can choose from, including the free Lorikeet Landing Aviary, where you and the kids can feed one of the colorful birds for a small fee. Don’t forget the kids’ bathing suits so they can cool off in the splash pad. The entire family can go for a cool splashdown on the ride Roaring Springs. zootampa.org

Make a reservation for a MICHELIN dining experience with the kids at Psomi in Tampa!

We absolutely love Psomi and so does the Florida MICHELIN Guide, which honored the restaurant with a Bib Gourmand Award for quality and value and even honored chef-owner Christina Theofilos with the Young Chef Award. The second-generation Greek American’s dishes are inspired by her own family recipes, and we can’t get enough. Psomi is open for breakfast and lunch during the week and for brunch on the weekends. We haven’t tasted our way through the entire menu yet but love the keftedes (Greek meatballs), the trio of dips and octopus ceviche. eatpsomi.com

Gorkhali Kitchen in New Tampa was also awarded a Bib Gourmand, and Rooster & the Till in Tampa retained its recognition. As for the stars, three restaurants earned a One Star from MICHELIN: Rocca, Lilac and Koya, all in Tampa.

Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida

The dog days of summer. Hot, looong and undoubtedly made better by water. With weekly changes in camp locations, extracurriculars on hold and lapses in familiar routines (something kids thrive on), summer can feel challenging—and sweaty. Each year, I get a bit better at the logistics of summering. By the time my kids are 18, I’ll be an expert. In the summer spaces between, I’m confident that letting kids cool off waterside while burning off energy is a winning mix. Fortunately, the Tampa Bay area contains numerous water parks for kids and parents who know a little splishsplash is good for the soul.

Awesome Family-Friendly Waterparks in Tampa Bay

The Lift Adventure Park

LOCATION: 17362 Old Dixie Highway, Hudson theliftadventurepark.com

Adventurous family? The Lift Adventure Park is for you. Located on a spring fed lake, The Lift offers a wake park, kayaking, paddleboarding and two courses: the Aqua Park and the Aqua Chimp. The Aqua Park, an inflatable, on-water playground, is open to children ages 7 and up. It presents opportunities for climbing, running, jumping, swinging and sliding. It’s an ideal space for parents to be kids again.

Aqua Chimp, a more ninja-style course, contains a climbing wall and various rope challenges. Participants don’t wear restraints, as falling into the water is part of the fun. There’s an easy, medium and hard path as well as a zip line that leaves riders submerged in the lake. Water shoes are required for the Aqua Chimp, and life vests are provided by The Lift. Lift employees are always present and offer assistance as needed.

The Wake Park is The Lift’s most unique feature. Novices can try knee boarding and more experienced wakeboarders can use the full-sized cable for trick work. Check The Lift’s website for details on required wakeboarding gear (available for rental).

Solar Vortex Lift Adventure Park

Adventure Island

LOCATION: 10001 McKinley Drive, Tampa adventureisland.com

For over 40 years, Adventure Island has gifted Tampa Bay with fun in the sun. Spend time exploring available tickets, passes and promotions, as there might be a best choice for varying family members. Park hours vary, so checking the website is key. There, you can also scan Quick Queue rates; some weekdays, it may not be worthwhile due to manageable lines.

Adventure Island has numerous chair and umbrella options. If you don’t plan on sitting much, there are lockers and free seating throughout the park—early birds can snag no cost, shady seats. Depending on your personality (and patience level in extreme summer heat), studying the park map and strategizing for waterslide order (involve the kids) might be a good idea, although Adventure Island’s size is not intimidating.

Tampa is the lightning capital of the world, and the unpredictable, summer-afternoon sky shows aren’t conducive to swimming. The park extends a Sunny Day Guarantee Policy; for guests with single and multi-day tickets whose visit is negatively impacted by weather, guest relations provides tickets for a second visit. Adventure Island has a sweet swimming spot for everyone, from the Endless Surf wave pool to the new Shaka-Laka Shores , an interactive splash and play zone within a zero-depth area that’s sensational for the smallest kiddos.

There are 10 water slides including Solar Vortex , America’s first dual tailspin waterslide. Kids and parents also love floating along the gentle current of the Rambling Bayou , a half-mile lazy river. Whether you’re a one or a ten on the thrill-seeker scale, Adventure Island has a splash for you. Be sure to pack refillable water bottles and leave the food at home.

The Lagoons

LOCATIONS:

Epperson Lagoon: 31885 Overpass Road, Wesley Chapel

Southshore Bay Lagoon: 16881 Lagoon Shore Blvd., Wimauma NEW Mirada Lagoon: 31461 Mirada Blvd., San Antonio metrolagoons.com

There are three gigantic man-made lagoons by Metro Lagoons in the Tampa Bay area with the newest and largest, Mirada Lagoon , opening just last month. Each location is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The settings alone are a crowd pleaser: gorgeous crystal-clear water, green turf areas, large screen TVs, music and even a swim up tiki bar. Booking your lagoon experience is important; capacity is limited and days frequently sell out, so consult the online calendar because prices vary by date and time.

Day passes that range from $20-$45 include swimming in the lagoons and water slides, and—at the new Mirada Lagoon—a water splash zone. The water obstacle course, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding activities are sold as add-ons, ranging from $5-$7 each. Kids must be at least 6 years old and 48 inches tall to experience the Water Obstacle Course and sessions are 40 minutes long. Active kids will enjoy a couple of sessions, so it’s a good idea to book passes accordingly.

When kids are physically fit enough to manage the obstacle course independently, adults can hang in the crystal-clear water, sit along the beach or even visit the adults-only area of the Lagoon. Though outside food and drink are not permitted, there are food and beverage offerings (adult beverages, too) on each property.

Lagoon water is not heated, which is perfection for Florida’s summer. Umbrellas and a variety of cabanas, including floating ones, are available for rent. A designated chair and shade area is always a good idea when summering with kids.

LEGOLAND ® Florida Resort Water Park

LOCATION: One LEGOLAND Way, Winter Haven legoland.com/florida

There’s an AWESOME water park near the back of LEGOLAND® Theme Park, and it’s a must visit, especially on a hot day. You will want to make sure your ticket includes admission to the water park. There are several water slides, a splash area, Build-a-Raft Lazy River, DUPLO Splash Safari for little ones, LEGO Wave Pool and more! There are changing rooms and showers along with lockers you can rent to store your stuff while you play.

Get Outside with The Florida Junior Ranger and Every Kid Outdoors Programs

There are so many amazing outdoor places to explore, both across the country and right here in our own home state. Though sometimes it can be tough to pull the kids away from their screens, there are a few programs geared toward kids that can help get them excited to explore the great outdoors.

FLORIDA STATE PARKS JUNIOR RANGER PROGRAM

The Florida Junior Ranger Program began in 2014 and provides the opportunity for young people to learn, serve and share Florida’s natural and cultural resources. Kids can visit any Florida State Park to get started.

HOW IT WORKS

• Once you receive your Junior Ranger Kit, you’ll be asked to take the Junior Ranger Pledge. You’ll receive your member ID card and Official Junior Ranger Badge.

• Get out and explore! There are 175 Florida State Parks that you can visit.

• Complete the six CORE activity pages and turn them in to any park staff member to receive your Official Junior Ranger Patch.

• Each kit will also come with a passport to collect stamps from various Florida State Parks. Once you get all 12 stamped, you’ll receive your Official Junior Ranger Pin!

• Not able to make it to a park in person but still want to get started? There is also a Virtual Junior Ranger program where you can take the pledge and complete CORE unit activities from anywhere.

Check out floridastateparks.org/virtual-junior-ranger.

WHY WE LOVE IT

Your member ID card gets you a free entry into any Florida State Park! Entry is good for one vehicle with up to eight passengers (except for Ellu Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park and Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, where the pass is good for two passengers).

The activities involved not only encourage kids to explore all of Florida’s amazing state parks, but they are also great ways to spend quality time sharing fun adventures with family and friends.

Visit

EVERY KID OUTDOORS

Every Kid Outdoors gives all fourth graders access to America’s national parks, lands, waters and historic sites for free for a full year. Though it’s only available to fourth graders, immediate family are also able to tag along and take advantage of the awesome benefits.

HOW IT WORKS

• Head to everykidoutdoors.gov to sign up and print your pass. Each pass will come with a unique barcode. Passes for the school year expire Aug. 31 so make sure to sign up on Sept. 1 to get your 2023-2024 pass.

• Plan your trip! Whether you’re looking to go on a hike, see protected animals or check out a historic site, there are tons of places you’ll have access to with your pass. Check out the website to learn all about the parks across our country and use their planning tools to plan your perfect trip. No matter where you live in the United States, you’re within two hours of an included site.

• Don’t forget your pass! Certain sites will exchange your paper pass for a waterproof plastic pass (a list of these sites is available online). Electronic copies are not accepted.

WHY WE LOVE IT

Research shows that kids ages 9 to 11 are beginning to learn about the world around them, and this is a great opportunity for them to see the amazing natural wonders of our country! Because it’s only good for a year, the pass encourages families to get out and explore more often than they normally would.

fourth of july food fun

Red, white and blue inspired snacks and lunches for summer camp bentos or celebrating at home!

There are so many great red foods to help create a festive looking lunch or snack. Create a “lunchable” with pepperoni, mozzarella and blueberries. How fun is this?

Hello friends and Happy July!

Red, white and blue parfaits are easy to create with blueberries, raspberries and your favorite yogurt!

You can easily add some red, white and blue sprinkles to yogurt or Nutella for some fun!

Or hollow out a red bell pepper and fill it with dips like hummus or chicken salad. This makes for a beautiful presentation on your snack boards!

Blueberry, strawberry or vanilla yogurt covered pretzels add such a nice touch of color and they’re so tasty too! Use star shaped cookie cutters for sandwiches and small star cutters for veggies and fruit. You can find them on Amazon or craft stores like Michaels. I picked up these star shaped crackers at Sprouts.

If you can find red white and blue corn chips, serve them on a board with white queso and red salsa for a delicious appetizer or snack!

And finally, if you’re headed to a game or hosting at home, don’t forget to celebrate our boys of summer, The Tampa Bay Rays! I made this lunchbox with their official peanuts and baseball gummies. Add a side of fresh fruit and it’s sure to be a hit!

I remember standing on the roof of our apartment building overlooking the Hudson River in Brooklyn, New York as a kid, watching the most spectacular fireworks show ever. When we moved to Florida, we got to watch fireworks as we lay on the beach, and they were so close it felt like you could reach up and touch them.

The Fourth of July is definitely one of my favorite and most memorable celebrations of the year!

Whether you’re packing summer camp lunches or bentos for your day at the beach or entertaining at home, I’ve got you covered.

I’m Jenny from Lunchboxmafia on Instagram and Facebook. Come say hello and join me for the best lunch ideas and packing tips.

We hope you have a great summer and make the best memories with friends and family.

Happy Fourth of July!

Moms to Know

Driven by a cross-country opportunity to combine her passions and make a difference, Dr. Cynthia Stringfield embarked on a new chapter in her life when she moved from California to Florida in 2019. Today at ZooTampa, driven by a deep-rooted belief in the power of education, Dr. Stringfield dedicates her work to instilling a sense of wonder and appreciation for wildlife within younger generations, fostering a connection that will shape the future of conservation.

TBPM: What are your main responsibilities as a zoo veterinarian and conservationist, and how do they relate to children and families visiting the zoo?

CS: I oversee the Animal Health, Conservation and Education aspects of the zoo. I also get to directly care for our zoo animals, in addition to Florida wildlife that may need us, for example, Florida panthers and manatees. As a member of the executive team, I am a part of ensuring an overall great guest experience for all our visitors. As a parent and former educator, I'm proud to be a part of a team that connects children and families with wildlife in fun and immersive ways. It is our goal that they leave wanting to be part of our mission of caring for animals and the planet we all share.

TBPM: What role does the zoo play in species conservation and endangered animal recovery?

CS: ZooTampa has a comprehensive local and global conservation program called ZT Saves. In Florida, our major focus is on the Florida manatee. The David A. Straz Jr. Manatee Critical Care Center, established in 1991, is the first non-profit and one of only three active critical care centers for sick or injured manatees in the state. We are a leader in Florida manatee conservation. We also provide care for injured or ill Florida panthers and bears. In our Florida Wilds area, we have comprehensive education programs focused on coexisting with wildlife in our state. We also are part of other native species recovery programs, like the indigo snake and striped newt. Globally, we are partners with a multitude of conservation organizations connected with the species who live at the zoo; for example, African elephants, rhino, penguin … the list goes on and on. Finally, as an AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accredited member, something only about 10% of zoos are, we are part of a bigger network of Species Survival Programs focusing on increasing zoo populations of species that are in trouble in the wild.

TBPM: In what ways does the zoo engage and educate children about conservation?

CS: ZooTampa's education programs include zoo camps, "Toddler Tuesdays” and field trips for school children, as well as special experiences like our Signature Encounters and Wildlife Connections, individualized experiences with our animals and the professionals that care for them. We also are one of the few zoos to have a school at the zoo! We have an Early Childhood Education program called "Zoo School" for ages 1-preK children. And, as always, it lifts my heart when I see adults reading the signs to their children, or children interacting with our child-friendly graphics, like our new installation in our Florida Wilds area about the Florida Wildlife Corridor.

TBPM: Your career move across the country to ZooTampa from Santa Barbara Zoo also marked a shift in your physical closeness to your son (27) and daughter (23). How does this season of motherhood look?

CS: Oh wow, for me, this part was and is still so hard! Parenting has its challenges at all ages but this one involved letting go as I am very close with my children. I knew that part of raising them to be responsible and happy adults involved me backing out at some point, but actually doing it was quite the adjustment! Because both of my kids decided to attend community college instead of going away to a university, we were all still living together. So, we decided together that instead of my kids leaving home to go to college, I would leave home and pursue an incredible opportunity across the country! Relating to them as adults, supporting them in their higher education and career goals, and navigating that aspect of life are now my new roles as their mother. It's a big transition, but I'm excited to see all the hard work I put into raising them now show itself in the adults they have become and the goals they have. I go back every few months, and they come to Florida routinely too!

TBPM: Do you have any heartwarming stories that demonstrate the impact that your work has had on your son and daughter? Please share!

CS: In addition to working at the Santa Barbara Zoo before coming to ZooTampa, I was a college professor for 15 years in a zoo animal career program at a college with a zoo on campus (Moorpark College). My daughter chose to go to that college and just graduated (and was accepted at UCLA!). She was talking fondly about when as a child, she had to come hang out in my office or classroom or the zoo when we had child care challenges, and that she thinks now she wants to be a college professor. My son has similar memories as well from the Los Angeles Zoo where I worked when he was little, and also talks about memories from going to Zoo Camp there. He is now an instructor in an EMT program at a sister community college and works the night shift in the local emergency room while continuing to go to school. They both care deeply for animals, people and the planet, and I think those experiences helped create that. Juggling motherhood with my career was a challenge, as many of your readers know I'm sure! It means a great deal to me to see now that they would not have wanted it any other way.

TBPM: Are there any new moms or babies at ZooTampa now that families can be on the lookout for?

CS: We have two new red wolf pups that are with the parents and their year-old pups from last year! We also have a new nyala and red duiker (African antelope) and our two newest orangutans that are about 2 years old now and so fun to watch. We have a pregnant rhino that is due any day too!

Kids to Know:

In a world where young dreams hold infinite possibilities, an 8-year-old girl who loved to skate found her way to the Tampa Bay Lighting Girls Hockey League to leave her mark on the ice. Alyson Hobbs, a focused and flourishing young player, is among other skillful teammates who showcase the boundless potential of girls in the realm of hockey. Under the guidance and mentorship of some of the world’s most exceptional athletes, Alyson is a shining example of the impact that strong role models have on the future of females in Tampa Bay sports.

TBPM: How did you first become interested in playing hockey?

AH: My dad took me ice skating one afternoon and I had so much fun so I asked to start taking skating lessons. My mom and dad have always been big Lightning fans, and I decided I wanted to try to play hockey. I learned first by attending a Girls Only Summer Camp hosted by Lightning Hockey Development (which is happening again this month). Then, I played two sessions of Rookie League before joining the firstever season with the Girls Only Recreation League this past year. My coaches have helped me become a better player and more confident overall.

TBPM: What do you enjoy most about being part of a girls' hockey team?

AH: I have a lot of friends on my team. Everyone is so kind and helps each other out when we need it. The coaches are all very nice and make it fun for us. It is nice to have a group of girls that understand the hard parts about playing hockey.

TBPM: Can you tell us about your favorite moment or memory from playing hockey so far?

AH: My favorite moment playing hockey so far is scoring my first goal in a game. I loved hearing everyone cheer from the stands! Another favorite moment was being the Lightning Thunderkid during a Tampa Bay Lightning game in January. I was so nervous skating on the ice in front of a full arena of over 19,000 fans. I even got to have a quick chat with some of the players while Pat Maroon helped me take off my helmet.

(Mom's Note): Two other defining moments for Alyson included her first understanding that this sport has the possibility to be a long-term option for her. Her coach played at the collegiate and professional levels in addition to being a 3-time World Champion with Team USA. Then in February 2023, the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA), which includes some of the best women's players in the United States and Canada, played six games over the weekend in Tampa Bay. Alyson had the opportunity to skate with the team on the ice to carry the team flag and stand beside them during the national anthem.

TBPM: Is there a particular skill or move in hockey that you're proud of learning?

AH: I’m proud of how far I've come with my skating. I learned how to do a mohawk (heels close together, toes out to skate/ turn in a circular motion) recently and that was really fun. I try to learn a new skating skill every time I get on the ice.

TBPM: Are there any professional women hockey players who inspire you? Why?

AH: I was lucky to meet and be on the ice with a lot of women's hockey players during the PWHPA weekend in February.

My favorite women's hockey player is my coach, Kelley Steadman. She played many years professionally and even won gold with the U.S. Women's National Team. I really look up to her and hope to play at a high level like she did.

TBPM: What would you say to other girls who are interested in playing hockey but may feel hesitant?

AH: Just get out there and try your best. It's going to be hard at first but it will get easier as you keep learning. It's okay to fall and fail; keep getting up and try again. I have fallen way more than I've scored goals.

TBPM: What do you like to do outside of playing hockey?

AH: I enjoy collecting Pokémon cards, playing video games on my computer, art projects, swimming at my grandparents' house, riding my bike and spending time with family and pets. One other thing that’s cool that I do is I’m a brand ambassador for POWR Hockey, which is a company that was started by two hockey moms. POWR Hockey has pink and teal hockey sticks made for girls and women.

“Dear Community… Thank you. Sincerely, Hillsborough County Public Schools”

Thank you. Sometimes, you just need to say thank you. Especially when you receive $653,000,000.

That is how much money our school district has received, so far, from you, taxpayers, through the Education Referendum, which voters approved in November, 2018.

The money is earmarked specifically for improvements to our schools such as air conditioning renovations and overhauls, new roofs, updated playgrounds, technology upgrades and safety and security updates.

Hundreds of projects have already been completed. Some are huge projects, such as the new roofs or new HVAC units. Other projects are smaller, like repaving parking lots or putting a fresh coat of paint on the school.

Summer is the busiest time for these projects to be completed because students and staff are not on campus, and crews do not have to work around the bell schedule.

For example, let’s look at Grady Elementary School in South Tampa. Grady Elementary will soon have a new HVAC thanks to referendum dollars. They are just one of the 14 schools receiving major HVAC work this summer.

Robinson High School is also receiving big benefits right now from referendum dollars as part of its school remodel. Robinson recently received a fire alarm system, HVAC and a new PA system for the school thanks to money from the referendum.

“Our school opened its doors in 1959 and there is a large number of alumni who still live in the area and have had their sons and daughters, as well as their grandchildren, attend Robinson High,” said Robinson High’s principal Dave Brown. “Having the remodel to our school breathes new life into – not just the school – but into the community! Not only do the students and the staff feel prouder and more confident knowing they have a

state-of-the-art facility to learn in, but the community itself is happier and they come together even stronger to support our school.”

These projects are months, if not years, in the making.

It starts with bidding, then planning, then preparations. The projects then go before our Citizen Oversight Committee to make sure the right projects are taking place at the right schools at the right time. Believe it or not, next summer’s projects are already in the planning stages. There are 13 schools already scheduled to have major referendum projects next summer.

They are:

Summer 2024 Education Referendum Projects

• Brandon High

• Bryan Elementary

• Burns Middle

• East Bay High

• Fishhawk Creek Elementary

• Heritage Elementary

• Mendenhall Elementary

• Nelson Elementary

• Roosevelt Elementary

• Seminole Elementary

• Sessums Elementary

• Shaw Elementary

• Shields Middle

Those are just the major projects. There are dozens of smaller projects that will also be completed at schools across our district. You can see a complete list of ongoing and proposed projects on our website, www.hillsboroughschools.org.

Our students and our staff benefit from every dollar you spend in our community. Every cool classroom, every security upgrade, every coat of paint or renovated court or field is because of you.

So, I guess there’s only one thing left to say.

Family Summer Sabbatical Abroad

Have you ever dreamed of living abroad for a period of time?

Either taking an extended vacation or perhaps even schooling your kids in another country?

Here’s how this can become a reality for your family without a huge commitment. Michelle and Jake Schomp have been traveling the world with their kids for over seven years, covering more than 50 countries and every continent. They have some personal experience with worldschooling, ideas for summer camps abroad and advice on how to turn your next family vacation into an immersive and connected experience for the whole family. Here’s their story:

What is Worldschooling?

Worldschooling can be as simple as providing your kids the opportunity to learn about the history, culture, food, language, wildlife and environment of the location you are visiting. Traveling families have advanced this worldschool concept to organize meetups, getaways, hubs and even schools in enticing far-off locations. Some of these worldschools are onetime temporary pop-ups, while others have set up permanent locations.

Worldschooling is having a moment right now due to more flexibility for parents to work remotely and more desire to have authentic interactions abroad. Organized worldschools combine this interest in family

travel with the benefit of shared experiences and social connections. Some destination worldschools provide communal living options, while others require you to arrange your own accommodations. Most worldschools embrace an aspect of self-directed learning to encourage children to build autonomy and self-empowerment. Some depart from traditional academics to offer a progressive curriculum based on experiential and practical learning modules. Others focus on projectbased learning, and many involve local activities to introduce the culture and traditions of the area.

Sailing with Boundless Life

Extracurricular Activity in Syros Greece

34 TampaBayParenting.com JULY 2023
Jake and Michelle Schomp with their kids Jovi (now 12 months), Henley (10) and Jagger (8) in Wadi Rum Jordan at a Martian dome desert camp.

Worldschool Options

These new worldschool communities provide the opportunity for families to deviate from a typical vacation towards a more engaging and connected type of trip. Depending on the program, your family can pop into one of the worldschools for a week, a month, a semester or a year.

Boundless Life

One worldschool that our family and others in the Tampa area have attended is Boundless Life. This worldschool has four locations open in Portugal, Greece, Italy and Indonesia; additional locations open next year. These locations are permanent and they offer a more turnkey solution that includes an education center for the kids to attend, a coworking space for parents to work from, accommodations coordinated for the families to stay in, and community activities organized to build lasting connections. The Boundless curriculum applies a modern approach to learning but still devotes time to core academics.

It is based on the progressive Finnish learning format focused on practicing mindfulness, nurturing engagement, encouraging inquisitive minds and raising responsible independent thinkers.

We have already attended three Boundless sessions with more scheduled. In the winter, we hiked the hills around the peaceful palaces of Sintra, in the spring we savored the sweets of tantalizing Tuscany, and in the fall we swam in the salty seas around Syros. Boundless Life makes worldschooling easy for families that want the experience abroad but don’t want to do all the planning. They currently have options for either a month-long summer session perfect for an extended summer vacation OR a 3-month session in winter, spring or fall that is a great fit for extended remote working or for a time off / sabbatical abroad.

{Use referral code: MichelleSchomp to get 600 euro off your first Boundless Life stay!}

Other Worldschools

Another popular and permanent worldschool is The Hive in the Dominican Republic. We attended a 2-month session at this program which focuses on self-directed learning projects. This worldschool takes a less structured approach to learning with a focus on a different United Nations Sustainable Development Goal each term. Set within a typical small town on the northern DR coast, there are many opportunities to interact with the local community from samba workouts in the streets to Sunday soccer at a nearby school.

POP-UPS

We have also attended seasonal and one-time worldschool gatherings and getaways that have each brought their own learnings and lessons. Some of these short sessions have gifted us lifelong connections to families that we have since met up with in other countries and keep up with often. You can find more about these pop ups on our website: PassportExplorers.com

TIPS

Do your research to make sure firsttime hosts have the right setting and appropriate activities that match your expectations. At the same time, don’t be afraid to take a chance to step outside of your comfort zone to make yourself and your family available for the faroff connections that may come.

Still not so sure? Consider inviting a family that you know to take the leap and sign up with you for a built-in insurance policy for your adventure abroad.

Our family of five thrives together uncovering the intricacies of other cultures, sampling the cuisines, and forever finding happiness spending as much time together as we can exploring the wonders of this world. We have decided that this life afar fits us flawlessly, and worldschools have filled in the missing pieces from our travels: They give our kids access to experiential academics and friendships for years to come, and they bring us invaluable adult socialization with other outgoing adventurers.

Hey, parents! Summer reading is for you too!

Summer is finally here! The end of the school year brings a slower pace, longer days and more leisure time. One way to use the extra time is to tackle your to-read list. While the time-honored tradition of summer reading at the library is mainly aimed at school-aged children, adults also benefit from reading during the summer. The library offers a variety of reading formats and fun incentives for adults to accomplish their summer reading goals.

The benefits of reading fiction this summer

Fiction is a mainstay in summer reading, and with good reason. A great beach read provides a fun and engaging diversion from the everyday cares of life; it’s a way to use summer’s extra hours that feels luxurious.

Did you know that reading fiction can also help improve your thinking or influence you to become a better person? Reading fiction can reduce stress and improve memory and your brain’s overall functions. A preference for fiction builds empathy, enables you to solve problems, and can make you happier.

For all these benefits, the library offers a multitude of new releases and modern classics to help you build the perfect summer reading experience. Summer is a great time for catching up on fiction releases you may have missed. Read a novel poolside or under a beach

umbrella; if you have travel plans this summer, stream an audiobook to keep you company while on the road.

Blink:

A new, locally produced film puts the spotlight on gun violence in Tampa Bay

Gun violence is a problem among youth in America—and this is not an opinion. Centers for Disease Control data shows gun-related deaths surpassed car accidents as the number one killer of children in our country in 2020, and that data hasn’t changed today, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

This is where a new locally produced film is coming into play. “Blink,” created by Safe & Sound Hillsborough and Axiom Films, is a short film that not only aims to educate kids in our community, but help them realize how a split-second decision made in the blink of an eye can have lifelong consequences.

We caught up with one of the producers of “Blink,” Freddy Barton, who is also the executive director of Safe & Sound Hillsborough, to dive into the importance of the movie’s message and what we can do as a community to reverse the troubling uptick of gun violence.

TBPM: What inspired the creation of “Blink“ and what do local families need to know about children and gun violence in our community?

Barton: Although this was a part of our gun violence prevention initiative funded by Hillsborough County, this film was birthed out of the idea of “reversing the bullet”. Too many times, we hear about gun violence…a shooting occurring in our community, youth getting access to guns, and we see the image of a bullet going forward causing wreckage.

In a meeting with my team at Safe & Sound Hillsborough I thought, “What if we could reverse that bullet?” Meaning, changing not the bullet, but the decisions that led up to someone firing it in the first place. What could we do, what must we do, as a community, to make sure that happens. We saw the numbers rising regarding youth picking up guns out of anger or reprisal. We had to get a message to the greater community that we have to act NOW to address this issue.

We also knew that we couldn’t put a piece together that only addressed gun violence. Mental health, relationship, anger management, responsibilities of parents/guardians, teachers and community members…all of these issues can be seen throughout the film. The more you watch it, the more you see…the more you connect with…and the more you feel.

TBPM: Why the title “Blink”?

Barton: We threw around several titles as a team, but landed on “Blink”, not just because of the immediate thought of how life can change in one second, but how sometimes in the moment, one pause, one thought, one blink, is all that is needed to prevent something from happening.

In the film, we hear the main character tell himself to blink…because all he could do was stare with his eyes wide open as he either is reflecting on decisions, contemplating his future, thinking of his mother and family, and many other things. We landed on “Blink” because life truly goes so fast that we have to realize how precious it really is.

TBPM: You used local actors in the film. Talk about that and the impact it has had on them.

Barton: It was very important to us to have local individuals participate in this film, especially youth in our program at the Reporting Center. We serve male youth that have gotten into trouble, some even on gun charges themselves. In order to address this issue with them, it was important to involve them. To this day, several of them that served as extras or support in the film talk about it, and are ready to begin work on the next film “Blink Twice”. This has served as a way to keep them positively engaged and excited about something that benefits the entire community.

TBPM: What can families do to protect their children and educate them about guns and gun violence?

Barton: FIRST AND FOREMOST…Let’s PLEASE stop leaving guns in cars! It’s not that hard, people. I have a friend of mine who carries a firearm with him at all times say to me that he actually puts his cell phone in his glove compartment while he drives so that when he gets out of the car, he can’t help but to see his firearm when he gets his phone. Whatever trick it takes to help this, let’s commit to doing it!

Secondly, every parent, no matter where you live, should go in their children’s room…check under the bed, in the pillow case, in the closet, in the drawers. Check the bookbag before school. Check it after school. Know who your children are hanging out with. Talk with your children.

Educate your children when they are young that guns are not toys. For our little children, if and when you see a gun, run. Tell someone. Don’t touch it. For our older teens, understand that you don’t have to pick up a firearm just because someone else does it or because someone makes you mad. There is always another way to deal with something. And you might just save a life by doing so. This film addresses that in so many ways.

TBPM: Are there resources out there for parents who may be concerned for their child?

Barton: There are several mentoring organizations for youth in Hillsborough County that parents can take advantage of. Seek them out. Contact Safe & Sound Hillsborough and we can connect you, or provide someone to help engage with your child. Regarding safety from firearms in the home, all of our local law enforcement agencies have gun locks available to secure them in the home or in the car. TAKE ADVANTAGE!

TBPM: What is contributing to the increase

in gun violence among children in

our community?

Barton: Right now, social media is crippling us. The thought of instant likes appeal to so many of our youth, and the desensitizing that has occurred regarding gun violence has grown through social media. Our kids now think its cool to post on social media with guns so much that they are getting their hands on them by any means necessary just to post for likes and feedback.

We also know that some of our youth lack the coping skills needed to address issues without resorting to gun violence. We have got to thrust mental health at the forefront of every conversation. Safe & Sound Hillsborough provides Mental Health First Aid training to individuals and organizations for free to help people identify signs and symptoms of mental illness or a negative episode for adults as well as youth.

TBPM: How can parents view the film?

Barton: Anyone can go to our website at www.safeandsoundhillsborough.org and click on “Blink the Short Film” to access the link. While anyone can watch it, we are still offering the chance to facilitate a talkback discussion after a public viewing. We have shown the film at churches, at community events and amongst youth groups and the value has been not just in watching the film, but in organized discussion afterwards that focuses on community solutions to this problem. Anyone wanting a facilitated discussion can contact us at info@safeandsoundhillsborough.org.

TBPM: You mentioned you are working on a sequel—what can you tell us about that?

Barton: YES! We are working on the script for Blink 2 (Blink Twice). It will cover quite a bit what was left hanging at the end of the last film. What happened to the other youth (shooter)? How is Jayden going to cope with the decisions that he made and the fallout because of them? The first film evokes a lot of emotion from different perspectives. The second film will go even deeper. “Blink” focuses mainly on Jayden as he goes through his process. “Blink Twice” will hear from everyone else around him. It is definitely going to make people think!

TBPM: How can we keep the conversation going about gun safety?

Barton: Simple…DON’T STOP TALKING ABOUT IT! Show the film to your children, to your family, to your friends, to your peers. Think on what you can do as an individual. Mentor or volunteer with a young person. Talk to your children about guns.

TBPM: Anything else you want to add?

Barton: We want to make sure people know that this film and the conversations are not against guns, ammunition or the right to carry or defend oneself. It is about what the community needs to do to prevent senseless gun violence that is affecting our youth today. We all have a role to play.

Cleft Lip and Palate Awareness Month: One in a Million Bree

Five-year-old Bree Brown is very special. So special, in fact, that she is literally one in a million.

“Bree wasn’t breathing when she was born,” reflects an emotional Areen, Bree’s mom.

During Areen’s pregnancy, Bree wasn’t measuring properly on sonograms. It was discovered that she would be born with one of 460 different possible skeletal dysplasias, with the possibility of other complications.

Bree was born at a local Tampa hospital and admitted to their neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), but her breathing problems persisted. When she was just 5 days old, she was flown to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.

“The way they had everything set up for Bree, she looked like she was finally resting for the first time,” says Areen.

In the NICU, Bree had genetic testing that showed her diagnosis: a rare, one-in-a-million skeletal dysplasia called Kniest dysplasia. This is when they also discovered hearing loss and a cleft of the soft palate.

Ernesto Ruas, M.D., who specializes in plastic surgery and cleft and craniofacial surgery, met with Areen and her husband, Boyd, to discuss the process of repairing her palate.

“Cleft palates happen in about one in every 800 live births,” Ruas says. “It’s a fairly common condition. The first thing I always tell the parents is to please don’t go on a guilt trip. This is not your fault. I try to approach it in a positive fashion because it is a bump in the road, but I always reassure them that this is a fixable problem.”

Most cases don’t have a known cause, and at least half of cases of cleft lip and palate are diagnosed via ultrasound prenatally, although cleft palates are more difficult to see.

“It was very scary, but he was very reassuring about how simple the operation was,” says Areen.

Bree was about 6 months old when she had her surgery, and within a few weeks, no longer needed assistance from her gastrostomy tube (a feeding tube often known as a g-tube) and was bottle feeding by mouth.

Frequently with an incomplete cleft, it’s only one operation. However, Bree, now 5, is a special case who may need a follow-up surgery because of air affecting her speech with “S” and “Sh” sounds.

“Ten percent will need further surgery to improve their speech, and she’s one of them,” says Ruas.

While the family is in discussion with Ruas about a possible surgery, Areen and Boyd are so proud of what their little girl has already overcome.

“We know she's going to face way more challenges than most of us are,” says Boyd. “Our biggest hope is that she is fiercely independent and has a heart full of love for the Lord.”

July is National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month. Here are Raus’ top 3 tips for families:

1. Don’t go on a guilt trip. It’s not your fault.

2. Choose your surgeon carefully and get multiple opinions. Do your homework and educate yourself.

3. Question your surgeon. They should be comfortable answering questions.

St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital launches new facility dog program with its first four-legged employee

No one wants to find themselves in a situation where their child has to be admitted to a hospital. But if your family does have to do so, at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, you can rest easy knowing that your child is in the hands of some of the country’s most sought-after, highly trained professionals.

Now that elite group has a new member in its ranks.

Meet Revere: a 2-year-old Labrador Golden Retriever mix. The hospital’s first facility dog, Revere learned more than 40 tasks over two years of training, making him an ideal partner in patient care. As a member of the hospital’s Child Life team, he lives with Child Life Specialist Hannah Murray.

“I am always looking for ways to improve the patient experience,” Murray says. “Dogs provide a sense of comfort and joy that is so unique. To bring this experience to the hospital and brighten spirits upon entering patient rooms, I simply jumped at the opportunity. I knew a facility dog would be able to elevate the services I provide to our patients, and the facility dog would be able to connect with patients and families on a different level than I ever could.”

As a facility dog rather than a pet therapy dog, Revere’s presence provides comfort, but his work includes so much more than that. He can retrieve items and open and close drawers, for example. Some commands Revere is trained to perform include “push” (such as a cabinet, drawer, a button or toy with his nose); “tug” to open drawers or pull wagons; “visit” to lay his head on a lap; and “step” to place his front paws on the foot plates of a wheelchair. Murray often uses “get” and “give” commands while playing card games or doing puzzles with kids—Revere will pick up cards and pieces and hand them to her and her patients.

Revere came to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital from Canine Companions, an organization that trains and places service dogs with professionals in clinical, educational or court settings, as well as with individuals who have special needs. The organization provided Revere to St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital at no cost. The hospital’s new facility dog program is also generously supported by the Adcock family in Tampa.

During a two-week training course in May, Canine Companions matched Revere’s outgoing nature with the needs of Murray and the Child Life team. “I was hoping for a sociable and motivated dog that would be eager and excited to come to work. Revere is just that!” Murray says.

Revere now lives with Murray and goes to work with her Monday through Friday. And he’s no slacker. In just a few weeks of work, he’s comforted anxious patients by snuggling in bed with them. He helps calm down kids who need IV and port access. He motivates patients to be more mobile, as patients are eager to assist Murray in taking Revere on walks.

An important aspect of Murray’s role as a child life specialist is quickly building rapport with patients. She explains that when they are in hospitals, children can be hyper-vigilant and fearful when someone is entering their room. In this regard especially, Revere is a game-changer. “Patients have told me when they hear the jingling sound of his dog tags outside of their room, they are excited, as they immediately know Revere is coming in to brighten their day.”

Coming into patients’ rooms with this fourlegged coworker has helped set Murray up for success by establishing her role as a safe person in the hospital setting.

“Revere provides unbiased, unconditional love to everyone he encounters,” Murray says. “He is an instant joy spreader.”
