Just over two years ago, we launched TAMPA Downtown Magazine as a supplement to South Tampa Magazine. We made the decision to launch it that way — rather than as its own, standalone magazine — because it was simply too early. The promise of the city’s growth meant we had to get something in the market, but Downtown Tampa just didn’t have enough stories to fill an entire issue. Not anymore. Earlier this year, we made TAMPA Downtown its own magazine. Just like the city itself, our magazine was searching for its identity. As you’ll see over the following pages, we’ve found it. We no longer have to worry about how to fill a downtown magazine’s pages. Now, downtown has more

than just “work” in the “live, work, play” trifecta every city strives for. Just a few of the projects we’re excited about include Riverwalk Place along the Tampa Riverwalk, Éleve 61 and the Channel Club, both in the blossoming Channel District, plus Sparkman Wharf, a new multi-use space in the former home of Channelside Bay Plaza that features food and drink options, gathering areas, and soon, retail and office space. You can bet we’ll be covering it all in print and online at tampamagazines.com as it happens.

As Tampa’s urban core has undergone massive changes just over the past few years, TAMPA Downtown Magazine has evolved with it. Throughout every issue, you’ll now find nothing but what you need to know to experience Downtown Tampa and its surrounding neighborhoods. When we were planning out this issue, we immediately knew what our main story needed to be: Yayoi Kusama’s “Love is Calling” coming to the Tampa Museum of Art. We published a story about the exhibition in our sister magazine, TAMPA Magazine, over the summer, and the response was massive. Senior photographer Gabriel Burgos and I got to experience “Love is Calling” for ourselves just before it opened, and I was mesmerized. The piece is unlike

We all have to eat three times a day, so we might as well enjoy the best food Tampa has to offer. With that in mind, we sought out the city’s best restaurants with the help of our readers and local influencers. The 2018 Best Restaurants list was first voted on by a panel of 72 Tampa influencers. Then over the final two weeks of August, TAMPA Magazine readers were invited to vote for their favorite restaurants and bars in 32 separate categories, casting more than 32,000 votes. Throughout the list, you’ll see Readers’ Choice selections in the categories where the two phases of voting had different results. Don’t see your favorites here? One of the largest festivals in Florida, Tampa’s own Gasparilla Festival of Arts, is 100 percent volunteer-based. It has been pleasurable and fulfilling work to sit on the Board of Directors the past three years. To collaborate with men and women who might not even make art but understand the importance of supporting it enough to give their personal time, for the betterment of Tampa’s art culture, has been awe-inspiring. BE YOUR OWN SPOTLIGHT in the Channel District, on the corner of East Whiting Street and North 11th Street

Q: How do you see Tampa’s art scene changing? A: Tampa’s art scene will be forever changing and growing, thanks to the city’s own art department, the museums, galleries, and the grassroots movements by local artists themselves. My current initiative is creating and curating the public art murals for the Channel District’s unique urban neighborhood in Tampa’s downtown. The Channel District Community Alliance and the Tampa Downtown Partnership grant programs have helped to fund most of the murals painted by my fine art company, Tada! Traditional and Digital Arts. The CDCA’s art committee shares the mission for an abundance of public art and inspiration for our community. Q: If you could describe Tampa’s art in one word, what would it be and why? A: Cross-cultural. Tampa’s cross-cultural dynamic drives 26   NOV-DEC 2018 tampamagazines.com

opportunity for all types of artists in this large, flourishing city. Museums and galleries, such as Cass Contemporary, excel at bringing national and international artists to our city, match-making businesses with muralists to create beautiful works of art for our communities. Q: What do you think Tampa’s art scene will look like in 10 years? Do you see more digital integrations in the future? A: Artists’ efforts will continue to mold Tampa’s art scene in new and innovative ways. I absolutely see more digital infusions in architecture, design and even modern art. Tada! has been established in Tampa for almost two decades now and will continue to evolve our own work. I truly am excited to see what the future holds for my hometown. — Molly Urnek

COMING ATTRACTIONS

FRANKLIN ON TWIGGS

Another opening, another show. Here are the new restaurants and developments beginning or coming online in Tampa’s urban core throughout the rest of 2018, plus a venue-by-venue look at the cultural offerings around downtown this fall.

Franklin on Twiggs This geographically named eatery near the corner of Franklin and Twiggs focuses on two of the hottest dishes on Tampa’s food scene: poke and tacos. Both options are highly customizable, with four set poke bowls or an array of build-your-own options. Chicken, pork or steak can be arranged in a variety 28   NOV-DEC 2018 tampamagazines.com

of different styles on a traditional taco or in a bowl. While Franklin on Twiggs does offer takeout, aspiring artists are encouraged to dine in at one of the chalkboard-topped tables and create their own masterpiece.

Armature Works While the space has been open since this past February, new additions to the mixeduse property are scheduled to open by late 2018. These include an open-air rooftop bar, a pier that extends out into the Hillsborough River, and a slate of new recurring events (like the free Florida Orchestra Happy Hour concert series, beginning November 28 at 6:30 p.m.). Splitsville Southern + Social When it reopens in October, the newly renovated luxury bowling alley will be just about the only remnant of what was once Channelside Bay Plaza. The rebranded Splitsville Southern + Social’s facelift reaches all the way to the menu, which is being reimagined by celebrity chef Art Smith. Chef Smith is known for his Florida-inspired Southern cuisine, and offerings will include fried chicken, poutine, scratchmade cheddar biscuits, short rib sliders and signature flatbreads.

Chop Chop Shop Seminole Heights rejoiced when the Asian-fusion favorite announced they would move just down the street to take over the former Nicko’s diner. Chop Chop Shop — known for its Korean fusion bowls — is slated to move in late October, with a new concept to come in its old location. And yes, the owners confirmed on Facebook that the new spot will maintain the Elvis Booth, which commemorates The King’s visit to Nicko’s in 1956.

spend whole lifetimes translating their inner visions into real life; Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama goes one step further, inviting visitors to literally walk around her imagination. At the forefront of the modern art world for over the last half-century, Kusama, 87, has been called “the most famous living artist in the world,” and for good reason. Her mirror-enclosed, participatory art installations, known as Infinity Rooms, are instantly recognizable around the world. For the first time ever, one of her Infinity Rooms is now on display in Florida. “Love is Calling” (2013), on loan from Jeff and Penny Vinik’s Vinik Family Foundation, is being exhibited at the Tampa Museum of Art as part of their fall

early 1960s, Kusama began incorporating mirrors in her installations, creating Infinity Rooms for patrons to enter and experience, becoming part of the art in the process. The first, 1965’s “Infinity Room — Phalli’s Field,” was a breakthrough for the artist, who had labored against her creativity’s own physical limitations. As Kusama continued to add lights, sounds and

into an experience so completely different from the familiarity of your daily life that you can leave what occupies your world for a moment in time.” Growing up in post-World War II Japan, Kusama’s infatuation with repetitive, almost dreamlike patterns — polka dots, in particular — manifested itself through the infinite sequences she painted on the canvasses, objects and, in the case of pieces like “The Obliteration Room” (2002), the surface of whole rooms. textures to the installations, they progressed to a complete disconnect from the outside world, a calming detachment that manifested in pieces like “You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies” (2005) and “The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away” (2013). Today, Kusama remains one of the world’s most prolific artists, whose work stretches into fashion, filmmaking, writing, performance art and beyond. In 2017, the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington

KENNETH P. PAGES, M.D. Psychiatrist | TMS OF SOUTH TAMPA

Dr. Pages specializes in treating Major Depressive Disorder using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). It’s a groundbreaking technology for people who have tried treating their depression with antidepressant medication and not had success. Dr. Pages has advanced training from Harvard and is the area’s most experienced provider of Neurostar TMS.

A DV E RT I SE M E N T

How is TMS different from traditional methods of treating depression, like antidepressants and therapy? TMS is different because it does not use medication. It very specifically targets an area of the brain believed to be responsible for symptoms of depression. Magnetic pulses activate these areas of the brain to bring it to a more normal state and make FAVORITE WAY the person less depressed. TMS is TO SPEND A more effective than medications for WEEKEND? With my husband, treatment-resistant patients, and Ryne, in our it may be me more effective than favorite city — New medication more generally. York City

FAVORITE LOCAL CULTURAL SPOT? I’m on the board of the Tampa Museum of Art. A shout-out to Michael Tomor for turning our museum into a real class act! FAVORITE TV SHOW? “Ancient Aliens” FAVORITE HAPPY HOUR SPOT? The bar at Bern’s

Are there any health risks associated with TMS? No, there are no health risks involved, which is another difference from medications. Some people will have discomfort at the contact point with the scalp. There is a small risk of seizure, which is estimated at 1 in 30,000 treatments. TMS has been under investigation and use for more than 30 years. It is the safest psychiatric treatment available. TMS of South Tampa has now been using TMS for five years. What kind of impact has TMS had on your patients? It’s had a terrific impact on patients who are tired of medications causing side effects and not helping. The results from my practice show 74 percent of patients feel better after TMS, and 44 percent of patients have a complete resolution of their depression. The results have been truly amazing. TMS has also had a great impact on myself and my staff,

helping us feel better about the service we provide. TMS is now covered by a wide variety of insurance plans. Why is that important for patients? Patients want proven medical treatments to be covered by insurance. TMS is now an affordable option for many more people. At TMS of South Tampa, we accept Cigna, United, Aetna, Medicare, Baycare, Woods & Associates and TriCare (with single case agreement). Who is a good candidate for TMS? Anyone with major depression is a good candidate for TMS. For insurance to cover the treatment, patients will have had to have tried and failed to treat their depression with traditional medications and therapy. This year, I have also added TMS treatments for anxiety, PTSD, tinnitus and migraines to my practice.
