SETH NELSON: Seth founded Nelson Law Group 10 years ago to help good people through difficult times. He represents high net worth clients and deals with difficult child custody cases. Seth also likes solving problems with creative solutions to meet clients’ needs. Seth is a father and has been through a divorce himself; he understands what you are going through. When not working, Seth enjoys time with his son and their long-haired, miniature dachshund, Theo.

TRACI KOSTER: Traci has 8 years of litigation and negotiation experience. She focuses her practice 100% on marital and family law matters. Traci understands that sometimes the most favorable outcomes come through keen negotiations, but she is always ready to fight for you in the courtroom, when necessary. Outside of work, Traci enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children.

COURTNEY TURNQUIST: Courtney appreciates the difficult circumstances with which clients are faced. She enjoys working with clients on financial matters, including analyzing division of assets and debts, alimony claims, and child support calculations. Courtney takes pride in her ability to assist clients while being focused and detailed oriented. She enjoys the beach, being with family, and her two cats.

“Seth is reliable and hard working. During my divorce process, I always felt like I was getting the attention I needed and was reassured to know that he was my lawyer during such a difficult time. I was impressed that Seth knew the differences among the judges and how to use that in his approach. He was on top of the constant changing nature of my case and continued to apply a new perspective if needed. I am very pleased with the outcome of my divorce and could not have done it without Seth. He is also a good person who is dedicated to his clients and makes them feel they are a priority.” — Kathy “Traci gave me and my children our lives back, and I will always be grateful to her. Traci was available whenever I needed to speak with her and had additional questions or concerns about the case and went above and beyond all the time. She was very reassuring when I was plagued with doubt. She gave my case her all. I would highly recommend Traci to everyone, as she is kind and compassionate.” — Yvonne

Doctor’s Orders With Tampa’s increasing walkability and friendliness to both pedestrians and cyclists, it’s never been easier to stay in shape out in our beautiful fresh air on the Tampa Riverwalk or at any of the city parks. Even if you’re staying healthy, odds are you or someone you love will need a doctor at some point this year. Finding the right physician can be an overwhelming task. Asking friends for personal recommendations is always a good place to start, but what if you could ask more than 9,000 medical experts for their choice of the best doctors in the area? That’s exactly what we’ve done in our 2019 Top Doctors issue. We mailed out a survey to all the licensed MDs, DOs and DPMs in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties and asked them to vote for the best physicians in the Bay area. We’ve added specialties to the list this year for a total of 64 different practice areas. Flip to page 59 to see who was voted on to the 2019 Top Doctors list. For a deeper dive into the physicians at some of the area’s top medical practices, turn to page 80 and read through our Physician Profiles. We hope you find this issue informative and keep it around all year to use as a medical guide. Don’t forget to visit our website, TampaMagazines.com, for additional content from the Tampa Bay medical community. Here’s to your health!

We perform in-office EEG, EMG and Nerve Conduction Studies. Our Board Certified physicians offer Botox injections for chronic migraine, blepharospasm and cervical dystonia.

APPOINTMENTS ARE OFTEN AVAILABLE WITHIN 24 HOURS Beginning in January 2019, we will begin to offer in-office infusion services for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP), as well as other neurological diagnoses requiring infusions. Call our office for more information. We participate in most insurances, including Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Aetna, Cigna and Great West, as well as Workers Compensation and Auto Insurance.

As you’re reading this, you are probably deep into your holiday celebrations, and health is likely the furthest thing from your mind (if you can’t have pumpkin pie for breakfast the day after Thanksgiving, when can you?). But because our lives depend on balance, we’ve put together an issue full of wellness-focused tips you can actually use — now and into the new year. Need a break from the Christmas cookie diet? We went behind the scenes at the Tampa-based Fitlife Foods’ culinary center to find out how they’ve taken their tasty-yet-healthy meal prep operation statewide. Don’t miss that on page 30. For a more DIY approach, try one of the simple, nutrient-packed recipes whipped up by three Tampa Bay-area personal chefs (page 35), or give juicing a shot with guidance from Swami Juice founder Kim Dionisio (page 40). If you’re like me and count eating more fruits and vegetables among your New Year’s resolutions, consider making an organic or community garden your holiday project. The leaders of Carrollwood’s Vista Gardens gave us the dirt (literally) on how to start, what to know, and when to plant on page 46. And don’t forget about fitness. I sat down with Ed Buckley Jr., the CEO of Tampa startup Peerfit (which has raised more than $20 million in just the last four years), to learn how his company is helping more American workers get to gyms and fitness classes on their employer’s dime. That’s on page 55. Finally, on behalf of our entire team, thank you for being a reader and supporter of TAMPA Magazine. Our goal is to celebrate everything Tampa has to offer, and we couldn’t do it without you. Stay tuned for the latest on seasonal events throughout December and January at tampamagazines.com. ASK THE INSIDER

Q: How do you see Tampa’s art scene changing? A: Tampa’s art scene will be forever changing and growing, thanks to the city’s own art department, the museums, galleries, and the grassroots movements by local artists themselves. My current initiative is creating and curating the public art murals for the Channel District’s unique urban neighborhood in Tampa’s downtown. The Channel District Community Alliance and the Tampa Downtown Partnership grant programs have helped to fund most of the murals painted by my fine art company, Tada! Traditional and Digital Arts. The CDCA’s art committee shares the mission for an abundance of public art and inspiration for our community. Q: If you could describe Tampa’s art in one word, what would it be and why? A: Cross-cultural. Tampa’s cross-cultural dynamic drives opportunity for all types of artists in this large, flourishing city. Museums and galleries, such as Cass Contemporary, excel at bringing national and inter-

Q: What is your favorite thing about Tampa’s art community? A: All the opportunities to give back to this city that has had a hand in raising me to be the artist that I am. One of the largest festivals in Florida, Tampa’s own Gasparilla Festival of Arts, is 100 percent volunteer-based. It has been pleasurable and fulfilling work to sit on the Board of Directors the past three years. A: Artists’ efforts will continue to mold Tampa’s art scene in new and innovative ways. I absolutely see more digital infusions in architecture, design and even modern art. Tada! has been established in Tampa for almost two decades now and will continue to evolve our own work. PARTY ANIMALS THE TAMPA BAY HUMANE SOCIETY HOSTED A BLACK TIE GALA WITH ADOPTABLE PETS AS THE FEATURED GUESTS Dining with animals usually goes one of two ways: either you’re telling them to stop begging for food, or you’re discreetly tossing them anything green from your plate. At the Humane Society of Tampa Bay’s Tuxes & Tails fundraiser, it went a different way. Under a wintery setting of snowflakes and stars, more than 70 animals awaited adoption in the Tampa Convention Center on October 13 as guests of the black-tie gala dined and socialized. Over 1,000 guests enjoyed a “Nordic Nights”-themed cocktail party and participated in a silent auction. Dogs strutted down the runway to end a successful night that raised about $530,000 for the animals. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay provides shelter and care for homeless pets and strives to find them forever homes. This year alone, the Humane Society has saved more than 7,800 pets, spayed and neutered over 10,000 and healed close to 27,000. — Molly Urnek 26   DECEMBER/JANUARY 2019 tampamagazines.com

“If you have a family history of glaucoma, you should be checked for it with an optic nerve exam,” Dr. Johnson says. Another major cause of vision loss is additional medical conditions. Diseases like diabetes, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure and cancers should be treated to avoid temporary or permanent blindness. Mitchell Drucker, M.D., a neuro-ophthalmologist at the institute, says eye problems associated with multiple sclerosis in particular can flare up in Floridians due to a symptom called Uhthoff’s sign. “When the body temperature elevates from a shower, from exercise, or even just from being outside in our hot sun, you can get symptoms of MS,” says Dr. Drucker. “If somebody’s at the beach or even out for a walk, they need to know their vision can go out, their legs can

While year-round blue skies and sunshine is one of the perks of living in Tampa, it’s something a significant part of our population never gets to experience. According to data collected by the National Eye Institute, 4.2 million Floridians over 40 have some type of vision impairment or blindness. Most causes of blindness in both Tampa and the United States, including cataracts, macular degeneration and glaucoma, are age-related. “The main risk factor of cataracts is just aging,” says Edgar Espana, M.D., a specialist in cataracts, corneas and external eye diseases at the USF Eye Institute. Age is also a risk factor for glaucoma, the world’s leading cause of irreversible blindness, says USF Eye Institute specialist Sandra Johnson, M.D. Glaucoma is most prevalent in the elderly, the Hispanic and Latino community, and the African-American community — three of Tampa’s largest populations. 28   OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018 tampamagazines.com

get numb and they can get weak as long as their body temperature stays elevated.” Dr. Espana says the best ways to prevent or mitigate avoidable causes of blindness, like infections and corneal scars, are to avoid trauma, to wear contact lenses correctly and to have routine eye exams. Prevention is key, adds oculoplastic and orbital surgeon Jasmina Bajric, M.D. “Just like when you get a mammogram to screen for breast cancer, you want to get regular eye exams to catch these things early,” she says. “If they are caught early, some of them can be treated without needing more invasive treatment."

As he tells it, David Osterweil didn’t taste salt until 2009. The then-Bloomin’ Brands executive and his wife had just gotten through their newborn daughter’s first year, spent mostly in the hospital dealing with complications of a genetic disorder called CHARGE syndrome. To unwind, the couple booked a stay at the luxury wellness resort Canyon Ranch, where Osterweil made a gustatory breakthrough in how he tasted food. “I was in the airport coming home, and I literally tasted salt for the first time in my life,” he says. “My palate was completely retrained in a week. [Canyon Ranch] had these made-from-scratch sauces and spice blends that had been flavoring this food, and the lightbulb went off. I said, I have to figure out how to bring this to people in their everyday lives.” In 2011, Tampa native Osterweil launched Fitlife Foods. A combination of a restaurant and mail-order service, Fitlife produces around 65 different breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack options that can be purchased at a Fitlife retail location or delivered to your home. To bring the food up to par with Canyon Ranch, Osterweil made an obvious decision: Hire one of the resort’s chefs, Andrew Ruga. He is now Fitlife’s vice president of culinary innovation and corporate chef, designing each meal with input from his fellow team members. “I moved across the country to start this conLEFT: Mini quiches cept here with David,” Ruga says. “Everyone had a ready to be packaged lot on the table in the early days, and I think that’s for customers part of what helped define Fitlife and to this day BOTTOM: Fitlife still sustains it. The company opened a roughly 15,000 square-foot culinary center in Plant City in 2015 to accommodate expansion. Inside, an 1,100 square-foot kitchen space is the only place meals are outside of the cold. Cooked ingredients then move from a blast chiller to prep areas, where team members assemble the meals in precise proportions within food- and microwave-safe plastic containers. Assembly rooms are kept at a chilly 36 degrees to ensure quality and safety. “The biggest thing we’re always trying to go for here is food safety and flavor,” Ruga says. “It’s got to taste good, but it’s got to be safe.” Flavor was a key component for Osterweil and Ruga to overcome the perception that Fitlife is tampamagazines.com DECEMBER/JANUARY 2019 31

in the business of “diet” food. While simpler options like Supercharged Chicken — grilled chicken with sides of sweet potatoes and broccoli — are popular, some of Fitlife’s top-sellers are meals like the Tampa Bay BBQ Beef and Mac and Cheese, chicken enchiladas, and orange chicken. The first words out of most customers’ mouths? “I didn’t think it was going to taste that good,” Osterweil and Ruga say, in perfect unison. On the Fitlife menu, the two look to strike a balance between healthy meals that taste indulgent and meals that seem straighforward but take some work in the kitchen. Ruga works with a registered dietician to ensure each dish falls within specific calorie, fat, carb, protein, salt and sugar ranges, substituting healthier ingredients wherever possible (see: a 32   DECEMBER/JANUARY 2019 tampamagazines.com

Fitlife has also added a complimentary wellness-tracking program for customers called Project U to each of its stores. Having the culinary center near Central Florida allows Fitlife to supply locations across the state and potentially add on major Southern cities like Atlanta, Osterweil says. The compa-

FITLIFE USES 39 original sauces and 13 spice blends to flavor its meals. “In so many experiences with any type of fresh-prepared meal or maybe a frozen prepared meal service, it just kind of tastes like the box it came in,” Ruga says. “That’s never acceptable for us. Though he isn’t ready to outline the details, Osterweil says 2019 will bring additional delivery through FedEx, plus what he’s calling Fitlife’s next leg of growth. “We feel like we’re really just touching the surface,” he says. “We’ve taken a very patient approach to growth. We really are trying to cultivate long-term relationships with our customers.” One reason Fitlife has resonated with customers, chef Andrew Ruga says, is the company’s unwillingness to lean into trends. “We’re not

We have options that fall within those parameters, but we don’t subscribe to being one way or the other.” Instead, Osterweil says, Fitlife Foods is meant to be a solution to a common problem: how to eat well while leading a full, busy life. “We’ve always said, just go eat the food and enjoy your life,” he says. “People will say, ‘Well, it’s a meal.’ Yeah, but it is legitimately solving something for somebody. main processes, according to Dionisio. Hot press is what your generic tabletop juicing machine does, while cold press is more highend. Cold press uses a hydraulic press system in which fruits and veggies are ground into a pulp and then pressed by a hydraulic system. “The tabletop juicer is centrifugal,” Dionisio says. “It whips the pulp into the sides before it presses, so there’s a lot more heat and more oxidation. With a hydraulic press, you’re containing the raw nutrients."

LOCAL SIPS

Know your palate Dionisio recommends starting off with something sweet, then move onto the more bitter green juices. “I always give the analogy that it’s like coffee,” Dionisio says. “When you first start drinking coffee, you like to add a lot of sugar. So when people start juicing, they gravitate toward the sweeter, fruitier options.”

Add beneficial supplements to make your drink a meal replacement Dionisio suggests beginning smoothies with a base of coconut water or almond milk. To ensure your drink fills you up, Dionisio likes adding supplements and proteins, such as almond or peanut butter, hemp protein, chia, hemp or flax seeds, or maca root. For juicing, it is important to use many materials to get a rich juice. At Swami Juice, each bottle requires 3 to 5 pounds of veggies and fruits.

Stock up on superfoods Superfoods like bee pollen, chia seeds, goji berries, hemp seeds or protein, spirulina, and flax seeds are key ingredients in any juice or smoothie, along with foods rich in antioxidants or vibrant in color, like acai and dragonfruit. “Make sure you use high quality ingredients,” Dionisio says. “There’s a difference between raw cacao and cocoa powder.” Dionisio recommends mixing five to 10 super foods in each drink. Use frozen fruits for smoothies; for juice, both fresh and frozen will work.

What’s your motivation? “It makes a big difference in how much space you need,” says Doug Carter, president of FitRev, a Tampa-based fitness design firm. “Are you trying to supplement your workout or do an entire workout at your house? We’ll make a 3D layout of the room to see if it’ll be functional with what you want to do. The more space you have, the more you can do in it.”

Flooring is key “You can do carpet tiles with a rubber back side, and a rubber floor itself can be attractive. However, in drop areas, rubber is not always going to solve the problem. A rubber floor will disintegrate over time if you’re dropping heavy weights on it, and the floor underneath — even if it’s cement — can be damaged. I suggest using rubber dumbbells. Rubber on rubber solves some of the problem. “Most people don’t want to redo their floors, so if you’re putting in free weights, make sure to get rubber mats or interlocking tiles for your weight area. Mats range from a quarter-inch to 2 inches and are made for different things. Always put a rubber mat under your cardio equipment to catch sweat.” 44   OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018 tampamagazines.com

Consider the equipment you need “You have to be careful and only put in pieces you’re going to use on a regular basis. Technology is big for home gyms, and Peloton is a big testament to that. Get a treadmill or a bike and install a TV in the wall, or you can get a treadmill with a personal viewing screen. The most popular pieces of cardio equipment are treadmills, followed by ellipticals, then bikes and rowers. For strength, multi-use pieces like Smith machines with other attachments are best. A functional trainer is probably safer than a Smith machine, and you can work every body part.” Go with the professional-grade equipment “A lot of a people who install home gyms still go to a gym because they like the quality of the commercial equipment. They’ll go to buy home equipment, and it’s not the same quality they’re used to. People end up wasting money because the lower quality is a turnoff, and they don’t use it. Most of our customers want that professional feel.”

1FitRev creates 3D models of customers’ spaces to give them an idea of what kinds of equipment could fit 2Rubber mats under every piece of equipment help protect flooring from damage caused by machine use and prevents users from slipping 3Carter recommends using smaller pieces, like this dumbbell rack, along with rubber weights or kettlebells to avoid potential damage

P H OTO: FI TR E V; P R E C O R

Location, location, location “Where the room is located is a big factor. Putting a treadmill on the second floor in an old house that vibrates may be disruptive to other family members. You want a comfortable area, which will make it more attractive to do your workouts. A lot of people are using an extra bedroom or office, so in those spaces it’s best to do one piece of cardio equipment and a full body trainer.”

2

TIP “Home products that

are made by commercial manufacturers generally have better, smoother and more biomechanically correct motions because they share similar designs to the professional club models.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW? AT YOUR HOME OR IN YOUR

COMMUNITY GARDENING

W

hat’s the secret to planting an organic vegetable garden that will flourish? Join a community one. “The best way to learn is to join a community garden,” says Martin Kleiner, vice president of Carrollwood’s Vista Gardens. “Growing seasons in Florida are so different from anywhere else in the U.S.” If you’ve ever looked at the back of a packet of seeds, you may have noticed the map of the United States divided up by zones. The USDA hardiness map organizes the country into 11 growing zones based on each region’s climate to help gardeners know what to plant each season. Bill West, president of Vista Gardens, says that information is not always reliable in the Bay area. “Tampa is unique because we are a mix of zones 8, 9 and 10,” West explains. “It’s sometimes hard to figure out what to plant when, and the best way to figure things out is to experiment and plant for all three zones.” Both men agree a community garden gives you the opportunity to make mistakes and learn. Plus, it connects you with a supportive group of like-minded people with whom to discuss your gardening frustrations.

ROBERTA OWENS shows off lettuces before planting them for the season. Vista Gardens has its own seed shed where gardeners nurture organic seedlings into strong sprouts before being transplanted into the ground.

WHAT TO PLANT NOW

COMMUNITY GARDENING

TO MAXIMIZE the space in your garden, consider planting vegetables that grow on a vine like beans or peas. Think vertically rather than horizontally.

HOMEGROWN tomatoes are tasty but can be tricky to grow. Look for varieties that do well in Florida, like “Better Boy” or “Amelia,” or heirloom varieties like “Green Zebra.”

“When I first joined, we had an expert come talk to the group, and everyone here wanted the exact recipe of how to grow plants,” says Kleiner. “He told us there is no exact recipe. Every plant is different. One year none of the pumpkins we planted grew. We thought we had messed up until a guest speaker told us there was a blight all across the state.” The best gardening advice Kleiner has ever received? “Don’t be afraid to pull up a plant if it’s not growing,” he says. “Be merciless. Would you rather spend all your energy nursing back a sick plant or replace it with a healthy one?” Located in the center of Carrollwood Village, Vista Gardens opened in 2014 and has about 85 members. In addition to having a 4’ x 16’ plot of land to garden, members can attend lectures and social events, have access to organic compost — created on site by volunteers — member-grown organic seeds and seedlings, and have the added benefit of enjoying a more salubrious lifestyle. “Once you start growing your own vegetables, you start eating more vegetables,” says Kleiner. “It’s almost impossible to not be healthy if you’re gardening.” tampamagazines.com DECEMBER/JANUARY 2019 51

HOW TO JOIN A COMMUNITY GARDEN There are about 25 community gardens across the Tampa Bay area. The Coalition of Community Gardens (CoalitionofCommunityGardens.weebly. com) has a list including addresses and contact information.

HOW TO START A GARDEN AT HOME

P H OTO: G A B R I E L B U R G OS

If you’d rather do your gardening at home, the University of Florida Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension is a wealth of information. Here are some of the organization’s tips. Plan your plot: For convenience, locate the garden near the house on a well-drained site close to a source of water and in a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Before planting, draw a garden plan that includes the name, location and planting date(s) of the vegetables you want to grow. Prepare your soil: Most Florida soils are low in organic matter and therefore benefit from the addition of organic matter such as animal manure, rotted leaves, compost, commercial soil mixes and/or cover crops. Composted organics may be applied at planting time; un-composted organics (such as fresh grass clippings) should be mixed into the soil at least a month before seeding. At planting time, rework the soil into a smooth, firm surface. Don’t over- or under-water: Vegetables cannot tolerate standing water from excessive rainfall or irrigation. At the same time, vegetables need soil moisture to grow and produce. Frequency of irrigation depends upon the age of the crop and your soil type. Young plants need frequent but light irrigation; maturing crops need more water but less often.

The company has raised more than $23 million since moving to the city in 2014 and increased its monthly recurring revenue by 100 times from the first quarter of 2017 to the first quarter of 2019. Most recently, the company closed an $8 million funding round and added Boston Celtics owner Wyc Grous-

“You have a lot of people wanting this ecosystem to grow and kind of be a startup hub,” Buckley says. “Tampa is a perfect storm of a startup tech ecosystem right now.”

beck and his firm Causeway Media Partners as majority investors. Peerfit first came to Tampa in 2014 to participate in Healthbox Tampa — a four-month healthcare startup accelerator — with funding from insurance company Florida Blue. “We had run out of runway in Gainesville,” Buckley says. “For us, it was either come to Tampa or fold up shop. I came down and honestly never looked back.” Buckley and his team have benefited from the Bay area’s booming startup ecosystem, which was valued at $2.3 billion in a report from the research organization Startup Genome this year. He says Tampa’s culture is what separates the city from traditional tech hubs like Silicon Valley and New York. “Seemingly everyone wants to lend a hand,” Buckley says. “That’s something you saw from Silicon Valley in its early days. You’re starting to see everyone in Tampa Bay have that mentality.” One of Tampa’s biggest gifts to Peerfit has been an investment from Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik, whom Buckley calls an “amazing partner.” “He’s invested a good amount of early stage capital into Peerfit, and there’s no way to describe him other than the most humble, hard-working person I’ve ever met,” Buckley says. The new year calls for Peerfit’s expansion outside of the United States. As for the possibility of moving headquarters out of Tampa, Buckley is resolute. “Oh heck, no,” he says. “We let our people live wherever they want to live all over the country and work remotely, but Tampa’s home.”

CHOOSING A PHYSICIAN CAN BE TOUGH. It’s even tougher in Tampa Bay, where there are thousands of capable, experienced doctors to meet your medical needs from head to toe. On the following pages, our Top Doctors list features 229 physicians named by their peers as the best in each of 64 specialties. Then, beginning on page 80, our Physician Profiles section highlights some of the best physicians in the Bay area.

WHO DECIDES WHO IS A TOP DOCTOR? Who picks the doctors? In September, we mailed over 9,000 surveys to physicians in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties. We obtained the list of physicians from the Florida Department of Health, including medical doctors (M.D.s), D.O.s (osteopathic doctors) and podiatrists. We asked the physicians to nominate their peers — who in their judgment are the best — in 64 separate medical specialties, then return the surveys on anonymous prepaid return envelopes or complete the survey online. We then tallied the votes from those surveys to compile this list. Does TAMPA Magazine check out all of the doctors nominated? Yes. After the list is completed, we verify that the doctor is not on probation or had their license revoked.

59   DECEMBER/JANUARY 2019 tampamagazines.com

Was my doctor left off the list because he or she does not advertise in TAMPA Magazine? Absolutely not. Every doctor who appears on the list was voted on by their peers.

Exceptional Women’s Care for Every Patient, Every Time

Is the ultimate goal of the providers at Women’s Care Florida, Absolute Health & Wellness

T

hroughout her life, the average woman experiences a roller coaster of physical, emotional and mental changes. There are the obvious milestones: adolescence, pre-conception, childbirth, and menopause. Many women also experience embarrassing conditions that aren’t often communicated beyond the privacy of your own bedroom: postpartum and aging issues such as urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse and hormone imbalances. These aren’t things most women are willing to broadcast — even to their healthcare providers. Dr. Jennifer Gilby, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist, has become highly experienced in treating incontinence and pelvic floor disorders. At her private practice of nearly 18 years, she has created a comprehensive menu of services, treatments and procedures designed to support women through every milestone, struggle and change. From routine and high-risk obstetric care, to the “unmentionable” urologic and gynecologic issues and questions, Women’s Care Florida-Absolute Health and Wellness offers women a

comfortable, serene, spa-like setting in brand new state-of-the-art facilities. Supported by an outstanding, all female, highly skilled staff to compliment the superbly trained all female physicians and midwives, Dr. Gilby strives to help women solve these embarrassing problems, and get back to a normal life. She wants women to know that there is effective, often non-surgical, treatment for prolapse and incontinence, and that women don’t have to just “live with it”. Many women struggling with incontinence can be cured with noninvasive pelvic floor rehabilitation and strengthening therapy which is offered in her offices. In the event surgical repair is necessary, Dr. Gilby is extensively trained in hysteroscopy, vaginal surgery, laparoscopy and daVinci Robotics for minimally invasive treatment of abnormal bleeding, incontinence and prolapse. Most of her surgical patients go home the same day and do not even require an overnight stay in the hospital. Dr. Gilby is also a proponent in the field of bio-identical hormone replacement and pellets. She treats perimenopausal and menopausal women to help relieve the adverse effects of declining hormone levels. Whatever stage of life they’re in, patients can feel confident knowing they’ll receive customized personal treatment with a compassionate physician, nurse practitioner or midwife who understands better than anyone what a woman’s mind and body go through.

BORIS KAWLICHE, M.D. BOARD CERTIFIED PSYCHIATRIST

The World Health Organization has declared that depression is now the number-one cause of disability in the world. For Dr. Boris Kawliche, seeing the disease firsthand helped guide him toward his future career. “My mom had terrible depression when I was growing up,” he says. “I wasn’t conscious of it at the time, but I think my mom’s depression had to have influenced my career in psychiatry.” Today, Dr. Kawliche is on the cutting edge of depression treatment as one of Tampa Bay’s few providers of TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). The noninvasive treatment is FDA-approved to reduce depression symptoms with very little risk of side effects. TMS uses electromagnetic induction to stimulate the prefrontal cortex, which can be grossly underactive in people with depression. Studies indicate remission rates around 40 to 50 percent and response as high as 80 percent in patients who have been treated with TMS. The treatment is now covered by most insurance plans, including Tricare, United Healthcare, Cigna, BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna and Medicare; Medicaid does not cover TMS. Dr. Kawliche is the first provider in the Tampa Bay area to offer Theta Burst, a newly FDAapproved, advanced version of TMS that takes just 10 sessions of five-minute treatments. Though it is not yet covered by insurance, the self-pay cost is very reasonable. “Most scientists agree that Theta Burst is equivalent in efficacy and safety to traditional TMS, which takes nine weeks to complete,” he says. “The main advantage of Theta Burst is that it is much faster. It can be completed in as little as a week’s time, giving patients much more flexibility.” While TMS and Theta Burst are only FDA-approved to treat depression, the therapy is being researched for the treatment of other mental illnesses, like anxiety, addictions, autism, bipolar depression, PTSD, schizophrenia, eating disorders and traumatic brain injury, as well as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, migraines and low back pain. TMS can also be beneficial for military veterans, who receive special discounts at Brandon TMS and Psychiatry. “The Veterans Administration purchased 40 of these systems to treat PTSD and traumatic brain injuries last year,” Dr. Kawliche says. “The Navy SEALs are exploring their potential to help those elite troops during the rigors of combat.” Education M.D., University of South Florida; Residency in Psychiatry and Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychology, University of South Florida

LENNOX HOYTE, M.D.

FEMALE PELVIC MEDICINE AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY

Dr. Hoyte is a pioneer in the use of robotic surgery for prolapse repair, as well as 3D female pelvic floor imaging. A fellowship-trained, board certified specialist in Urogynecology, also known as Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS), Dr. Hoyte founded The Pelvic Floor Institute (PFI), which is dedicated to helping women with all types of female pelvic floor disorders. Dr. Hoyte says one of the reasons the Institute has been able to help so many women is because they take the time to listen carefully to each patient’s unique symptoms in order to tailor a treatment plan that will successfully treat their problem and allow them to live life fully again. “We listen carefully, examine carefully, analyze carefully and treat carefully,” says Dr. Hoyte. “We design personalized, world class, evidence-based treatment plans for our patients based on the most current research. We are very excited about the fact that our evidence-based treatments, including physical therapy, Botox injections, neuromodulation, vaginal and robotic surgeries are very effective at treating our patients with different types of pelvic floor disorders.” Dr. Hoyte spent much of his career educating the next generation of FPMRS surgeons. He was the Founding Director of Urogynecology and Female Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery at the USF Morsani College of Medicine, and he started the first board approved fellowship training program for Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery in Florida, training and graduating Florida’s first 4 FPMRS specialists. At PFI, Dr. Hoyte and his team now focus on educating women and their families about pelvic floor disorders and giving them a range of options for treating their pelvic floor problems. This year, Dr. Hoyte was voted the #1 female pelvic medicine physician on TAMPA Magazine’s 2019 Top Doctors list by his peers.

If you are suffering from pelvic prolapse, urinary incontinence, bladder, vaginal or myofascial pain, bladder control problems or other pelvic issues, The Pelvic Institute can help. “At the Pelvic Floor Institute we have a caring, accomplished, capable team devoted to outstanding outcomes for our patients.” Education M.D., Stanford University; Master of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, MIT; Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Worchester Polytechnic Institute

JEFFREY TEDDER, M.D., F.A.C.S

ORTHOPAEDIC SURGEON/SPORTS MEDICINE

Dr. Jeffrey Tedder understands that for athletes, there’s nothing more frustrating than being on the sidelines with an injury. As a two-sport letterman in football and basketball for Wofford College, he remembers the hard work, dedication and thrill of competing. Now, as a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, winning means helping injured athletes get back in the game as soon as possible. With the support of his expert team at Tedder Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, Dr. Tedder treats rising professional athletes and weekend warriors alike through knee and shoulder arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction and osteochondral transplantation. “Athletes are hard workers in rehab, which makes working with them not only easy but enjoyable,” Dr. Tedder says. “They have skin in the game, you can say, and they know how valuable their time is when invested. They know that hard work will get them the best results and back to 100 percent.” But you don’t have to be a hardcore athlete to see Dr. Tedder; as a knee and shoulder orthopaedic specialist, he treats everyone from retired senior tennis players to up-and-coming high school sports stars. “We can treat anyone,” he adds. “I like athletes because I was one, and they are very healthy and very treatable, but we don’t treat just athletes.” Dr. Tedder may be the go-to doctor for knees and shoulders, but he also treats hands, wrists, hips, elbows, feet and ankles. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. MICHAL WALDMAN,

D.P.M.

PODIATRIST AND PODIATRIC SURGEON

Podiatrists are not typically the first doctors people think to make an appointment with each year, but Dr. Michal Waldman says it’s important to think about your feet and ankles more often. “Foot and ankle health often gets ignored because people don’t see a podiatrist until they actively have issues,” she says. “It’s highly advisable to see a podiatrist at least one or two times a year as a preventative measure.” Renowned and admired within the medical community and amongst her patients, Dr. Waldman is a board-certified podiatric physician and surgeon, treating patients from childhood through adulthood for all types of foot and ankle concerns. Despite her advanced background in traditional surgery, she is one of the only podiatrists in the entire Tampa Bay area formally trained in and administering minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatments for pain management of the foot and ankle, including mesenchymal stem cell injections. “The results are phenomenal,” she says. “We typically see 30 percent to 50 percent improvement in the first two weeks, and then 80 to 100 percent thereafter, and no scalpel is necessary. I’m a huge advocate for stem cell therapy when performed by an experienced specialist. It takes 30 seconds to do, and people leave forgetting they ever had pain.” This fall, Dr. Waldman and her team at North Tampa Foot Care will be moving into a new, state-of-the-art facility that features an in-house X-ray machine for quick imaging and immediate results. Dr. Waldman even takes same-day appointments to accommodate patients who cannot be treated anywhere else. “When you have a medical issue, there’s nothing worse than being turned away because a specialist is not available to see you,” she explains. “It’s your right to have help when you need it.”

“Having the ability to eliminate or significantly decrease pain for someone is transformative,” he says. “Building the blocks and structure to give the patient back the function they had lost is also incredibly rewarding.” At the Laser Spine Institute, Dr. Weiss and his team treat spinal stenosis, herniated and/or bulging discs, spinal instabilities and deformities, degenerative conditions of the spine, sciatica, pinched nerve, traumatic injuries, and other conditions of the spine. He says pain, including nerve pain, typically motivates patients to see a Laser Spine Institute surgeon. “This presents itself with a pain that radiates from either the neck or back, down the arms and legs,” Dr. Weiss says. “Other signs such as weakness, clumsiness and balance issues could suggest pressure on nerves, the spinal canal or spinal cord.” Dr. Weiss specializes in minimally invasive and noninvasive treatment options, like minimally invasive spinal surgery, regenerative medicine, and stem cell treatments. He also trains new surgeons at Laser Spine Institute practices across the country in these techniques. “Minimally invasive spine surgery allows for the best access to the area of pathology, with the most minimal amount of disruption to the normal anatomy,” Dr. Weiss says. “The types of procedures we perform also allow patients to experience a lower infection rate, less scar tissue, faster healing and better outcomes.” “I wholeheartedly believe in this minimally invasive approach to the spine and feel it’s essential that all spine surgeons learn and adopt this practice,” he adds. “This is the future of spine surgery and is in the best interest of the patient.”

JAMIE FERNANDEZ, M.D.

Psychiatrist

ANGELO FERNANDES, M.D.

Gastroenterologist As a general gastroenterologist, Dr. Angelo Fernandes is often one of the first physicians patients see in their course of treatment. “It’s a fascinating specialty,” Dr. Fernandes says. “I enjoy the clinical work just as much as I like interacting with patients and getting to know them. Every day is challenging and rewarding.” Because he deals with the entire gastrointestinal and biliary tracts, Dr. Fernandes treats patients managing everything from gastroesophageal reflux, indigestion and abdominal pain to hepatitis, fatty liver and pancreatitis. He joined Florida Hospital earlier this year, and his personalized approach to healthcare aligns well with the overall mission of the organization. “The physicians at Florida Hospital Physician Group take a patientcentered approach,” he says. “We take care of the whole patient rather than just specific conditions or diseases. There’s an emphasis on quality of care.” Education M.D., McGill University Faculty of Medicine (Montreal, Canada); Residency in Internal Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center (Bronx, NY); Fellowship in Gastroenterology, Long Island Jewish Medical Center; Board Certified in Gastroenterology, American Board of Internal Medicine

Dr. Jamie Fernandez understands that psychiatric disease can be devastating, but most importantly, she says, it can and should be treated. “Patients need access to mental healthcare, which will require a reduction in the stigma and negative perceptions about mental illness that are a barrier to so many in need of treatment,” she says. “It is incredibly gratifying to care for individuals and participate in their recovery.” Dr. Fernandez heads the Behavioral Health Center at Memorial Hospital Tampa, where she treats a wide range of mental illnesses, including anxiety, depression, alcoholism, addiction and PTSD, with evidence-based treatment options. She specializes in mood disorders during pregnancy and postpartum, neurocognitive disorders and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), which improves symptoms in more than 80 percent of patients with treatment-resistant depression. “Despite its efficacy, negative perceptions remain, likely because early forms of ECT did not have the safety and comfort measures that are required today,” she says. “Patients do not experience any pain or discomfort during the procedure, and the antidepressant effects are often rapid and profound.” Education M.D., Cornell University Weill Medical College; Internship, New York Hospital Queens Department of Medicine; Residency in Adult Psychiatry, Stanford University Medical Center; Board Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology

Gastroenterologist Growing up, Dr. Michael Harris always knew he wanted to become a doctor, but he became truly interested in pursuing a medical career while studying microbiology and cell science in college. In medical school, he became fascinated with the gastrointestinal system and how he could help those who were suffering from conditions such as Crohn’s disease, liver cancers and other digestive issues. “Issues with digestion can be debilitating and embarrassing,” he says. “To see someone get their quality of life back, especially when they thought it was lost for good, is quite special.” Dr. Harris practices general gastroenterology and advanced endoscopy, as well as gastrointestinal oncology with luminal restoration and endoluminal stenting, complex pancreatic procedures, and standard and complicated Barrett’s esophagus treatment. After determining the cause of a patient’s digestive problems, he creates an individualized treatment plan and can often treat them using noninvasive procedures. “Being specialized in advanced endoscopy allows me to provide screening and treatment using the latest methods available, and patients can have the quickest, most successful recovery possible,” he says. ALEX ROSEMURGY, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Minimally Invasive Advanced GI Surgeon/Foregut (Upper GI) and Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgeon

SHARONA ROSS,

Dr. Alexander Rosemurgy’s résumé includes a variety of entries, but he says his current role is his favorite. “Surgery is my first love,” he says.

Minimally Invasive Advanced GI Surgeon/Foregut (Upper GI) and Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgeon

For nearly three decades, Dr. Rosemurgy has focused on the surgical treatment of hepatopancreaticobiliary, esophageal and complex abdominal disorders and cancers. Dr. Rosemurgy is passionate about research and has more than 450 publications. “Research has always been a passion of mine. I am naturally curious, and I believe we should study what we do.” Known for his expertise in complex and life-saving operations, Dr. Rosemurgy was a pioneer in Laparoendoscopic Single Site (LESS) surgery and robotic surgical oncology. He currently serves as the Medical Director of the Digestive Health Institute at Florida Hospital Tampa. Dr. Rosemurgy utilizes cutting edge, single incision surgical techniques to treat a variety of conditions including reflux and swallowing disorders, gallbladder, liver and pancreas disorders. “Going from traditional open operations to laparoscopy was a huge shift in surgery,” he says. “With LESS surgery, the only incision we make is in the belly button. Robotic surgery allows us to do extremely complex operations for cancers of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver and biliary tract through very tiny incisions — allowing patients to quickly return to their normal lives. It’s just better than traditional surgery.” Education M.D., University of Michigan Medical School (Ann Arbor, MI); Residency in General Surgery, University of Chicago; Board Certified, American Board of Surgery

M.D., F.A.C.S.

As a child in Israel, Dr. Sharona Ross knew what she wanted to do with her life after seeing the T.V. show “Quincy, M.E.” “I was really amazed by the investigations,” Dr. Ross says. “I knew then that I wanted to become a doctor.” While working on research with a local pathologist, Dr. Ross realized her passion was for surgery. After serving in the Israeli Defense Forces for two years, she came to the U.S. for medical school and chose surgery as her specialty. “The pancreas, liver and gallbladder were areas I truly enjoyed,” Dr. Ross says. “I also love technology. I married the two to improve patient outcomes.” She is a leader in her field for her use of robotic and minimally invasive laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) at Florida Hospital Tampa, procedures that result in less downtime for patients and involve less pain and almost no chance of infection. “What I like most is being able to hold the hands of patients whose conditions have affected their everyday lives and tell them there’s a better future,” Dr. Ross says. “Medicine is definitely my calling.” Education M.D., George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences; Residency in General Surgery, University of South Florida; Fellowship in Gastroenterology, University of South Florida; Board Certified in General Surgery

YASSER SALOUM, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.G. Gastroenterologist Dr. Yasser Saloum has one goal when patients come to him: find the right diagnosis and provide the right treatment the first time. “I try to get to the bottom of the problem before prescribing any medications, and I listen to my patients to determine just what they need,” Dr. Saloum says. “By doing so, I am able to order proper testing for them.” Dr. Saloum focuses on liver disease, reflux issues and constipation with pelvic dysfunction. To get a diagnosis, he uses innovative techniques like MR defecography, anorectal manometry and bravo pH testing for reflux. He keeps patients informed of his thoughts and plans for future treatment. “In my opinion, an informed patient is a good patient,” he says. “Our practice is unique. We spend whatever time it takes with patients to address all their concerns during the first visit.” Dr. Saloum was an educator before transitioning to private practice so, in addition to caring for patients, he enjoys sharing his craft with medical students who rotate through his office. “I get the best of both worlds,” he says.

ARTHI SANJEEVI, M.D., M.S., EPI Gastroenterologist According to Dr. Arthi Sanjeevi, becoming a physician may have been destiny. “It’s hard to say if I chose the path or the path chose me,” she says. “As a child, I was fascinated by the innate intelligence of the human body and curious about its malfunctions. That, combined with a passion to help humanity, garnered my interest in medicine. Having multiple family members with GI issues and a flare for hands-on technical work made gastroenterology a natural choice.” As a gastroenterologist and interventional endoscopist, Dr. Sanjeevi focuses on pancreaticobiliary disorders, gastrointestinal oncology, gastrointestinal motility and small bowel pathology. She has established an evaluation platform to effectively diagnose swallowing and reflux disorders and performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic ultrasounds, ERCP, enteroscopies, and enteral stenting, in addition to standard procedures, such as colonoscopies. Dr. Sanjeevi believes in empowering patients with knowledge of their disease and treatment options. “I consider myself to be their advocate, helping them make informed decisions,” she says. “My biggest reward is the gratitude from my patients and their families. The ability to impact lives is a gift not to be taken lightly.”

JOHN SCHMITTNER, M.D.

Cardiologist Dr. John Schmittner has been healing hearts for more than 20 years. “There is nothing more rewarding than meeting a patient, discovering what is wrong and being partners in their care,” he says. As an expert in the treatment of advanced heart failure and cardiac transplants, he continues to incorporate new and effective treatments. “I am very excited about the progress I’ve seen in medical assist devices that can bypass a weak heart,” Dr. Schmittner says. “Heart failure patients are often short of breath, experience extreme fatigue or say, ‘I just can’t do anything anymore.’ It is wonderful when we can help them regain their energy and enjoy life again.” Dr. Schmittner encourages everyone to make healthy heart choices. “Embrace healthy choices in your diet and food portions, and make exercise a part of your life. However, if you experience heart failure and changing your lifestyle and medications do not help, please talk to a cardiologist.”

JENNIFER SEMINERIO, M.D.

Gastroenterologist When dealing with chronic diseases like inflammatory bowel disease, patients need care from a trusted expert. In Tampa, that expert is Dr. Jennifer Seminerio. “Somebody close to me was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, so I was very familiar with the disease state and what it takes to control it,” she says. “I became passionate about it because I saw what these patients go through. I tell my patients as long as they’re willing to fight along with me, I’m never going to give up.” By focusing solely on IBD, Dr. Seminerio sees patients throughout their lives, allowing her to get to know them on a personal level and individualize dietary, psychological and medical approaches to their treatment. Often patients need to see a doctor without much advanced notice. “I love being there for patients who just want to see somebody,” Dr. Seminerio says. “I’ll always try to make a way to get them in as soon as possible.”

ISWANTO SUCANDY,

JARED WALLEN,

Advanced Liver, Biliary and Pancreatic Surgeon

Urologist

M.D., F.A.C.S.

Liver operations are among the most difficult major operations to perform, so patients turn to Dr. Iswanto Sucandy, a Tampa Bay expert in minimally invasive and robotic surgery for disorders of the liver. His patients experience less pain, faster recoveries and shorter hospital stays. “What I enjoy most about my job is helping people and saving their lives,” Dr. Sucandy says. “Liver surgery is not optional. It’s not a scenario where you have some pain and get it taken care of next month. Liver tumors absolutely must be treated without delay.” After extensive training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, home of the nation’s premier liver center, Dr. Sucandy came to Florida Hospital Tampa in 2016 to develop the Tampa Bay area’s first and only minimally invasive robotic liver surgery program. He says patients are already reaping the benefits. “The goal is to deliver exceptional care with quick recovery so patients can enjoy better lives,” Dr. Sucandy says. M.D.

It took Dr. Jared J. Wallen a bit of time to find his specialty, but when he did, he knew he was where he was meant to be. “I knew I wanted to do something with my hands that would challenge me,” he says. “I met with a group of physicians in urology, and it clicked. They say pick the people you want to emulate and follow their lead, so that’s what I did.” Dr. Wallen completed his residency at the University of South Florida, where he worked with Dr. Rafael Carrion, a leader in the field of men’s sexual health. Using that training, Dr. Wallen is performing surgical restoration for erectile dysfunction and innovative in-office procedures for enlarged prostates that help restore urinary function without compromising sexual functions. He also uses minimally invasive and robotic surgeries to treat benign urologic conditions and cancers like prostate, testicular and bladder cancer. “The beauty of robot-assisted surgery is that we can offer the same level of quality and safety with a smaller incision and shorter recovery time,” he says. Dr. Wallen has served on medical missions to Haiti and Guatemala. “Being able to bring quality health care to locals is a great thing,” he says. “We’re blessed to be there.” Education M.D., Rush University Medical Center (Chicago); Residency in Urology, University of South Florida
