[FAMILY FRIDAY CULTURE PROJECTS]
ABSTRACT Culture concerns the traditions, values, and beliefs that we carry in our families or groups of people that we are close to. This can change with time but can help explain who we are and where we fit in with others. We should be proud of our roots and celebrate our culture. Your mission is to create a piece of art and show your cultural background along with a short summary of what is shown in your art piece.
[A COLLABORATION BETWEEN ADMISSIONS AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT AT A&M- SAN ANTONIO]
Nikki Banner My family consists of two parents, 3 daughters, 1 son, and 1 dog. We are very much a traditional American family who likes all of the basic foods and celebrates all of the basic american holidays. Although I have recently been learning about my hawaiian heritage and decided to focus more on that for this project.
Project- My great great grandmother was 100% native hawaiian. Her name was Rebecca Lamahilani Piimoku Haalo’u. When my grandmother and grandfather got married they received a traditional hawaiian quilt, hand quilted by my grandmother Rebecca. For my project I made a pillow with the same type of hawaiian quilting patterns as the one she made so many years ago. These patterns were simple designs that resembled plants and flowers that were found in the hawaiian islands. The designs were made the same way as a paper snowflake made today, completely symmetrical. The block pattern that I made is the Red Ginger. These quilts were often given at important times such as weddings, child births and other significant events.
Values- The state motto is Ua Mau Ke Ea o Ka Aina i ka Pono which means the life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness. Although not translated directly is includes aspects of goodness, excellence, fairness, order, completeness, care , purpose and hope.
Celebrations- All hawaiian celebrations are celebrated with lots of singing chant like music, ukulele music, hula and other polynesian dances and bright flower garland leis. Some of these hawaiian celebrations include Prince Kuhio's day, Lei Day, Boy's Day & Girl's Day, and King Kamehameha Day.
Religion- most hawaiians practise some form of christianity but my grandmother was buddhists. My immediate family however is Christian, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints.
