getting involved isn't spooky

In fact, as a university, we've noticed that getting involved on campus allows students to meet like-minded individuals resulting in higher chances of being successful here at A&M-SA. Trying new things can be scary, but it doesn't have to be. The office of Transfer Student Engagement, and the Silver Liners mentorship program hosts events that are open to all transfer students. Stay up to date on all the events we have through this newsletter!

ABOUT HER ROLE ON CAMPUS "MY MAIN ROLE IS OVERSEEING THE PEER LEADERS WHO WORK CLOSELY ALONGSIDE OUR FIRST-YEAR SEMINAR INSTRUCTORS. I HELP PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE PEER LEADERS TO GAIN SKILLS THAT CAN BE USED IN THE FIRST-YEAR SEMINAR CLASSROOM TO SUPPORT INCOMING FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS AS WELL AS IN THEIR FUTURE CAREER PATHS. ADDITIONALLY, I OVERSEE THE LOGISTICAL PLANNING OF OUR LEARNING COMMUNITIES PROGRAM WHICH CREATES LINKED COURSES FOR STUDENTS TO HAVE A COLLABORATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR FELLOW CLASSMATES"

Yaribel S. C araveo UTRGV AL

UMNA

WHAT DID YOUR UNDERGRADUATE JOURNEY LOOK LIKE? "RELATED TO MY ROLE I AM GRATEFUL TO WORK WITH STUDENTS DURING A UNIQUE TRANSITION IN THEIR LIVES AS THEY BECOME FAMILIAR WITH OUR CAMPUS COMMUNITY. I ALSO FEEL VERY PRIVILEGED TO WORK WITH THE FYE PEER LEADERS AND CONNECT WITH THEM IN A ONEON-ONE SETTING. ALTHOUGH THE PROGRAMMING OUR OFFICE HOSTS IS TARGETED TOWARDS FIRSTYEAR STUDENTS WE AIM TO PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES TO ALL STUDENTS THAT WILL HELP THEM BE SUCCESSFUL BEYOND THEIR ACADEMIC SETTING. LASTLY, IN MY POSITION I AM SURROUNDED BY A GROUP OF POSITIVE AND CARING INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT MOTIVATING THOSE AROUND THEM TO ACHIEVE THEIR PERSONAL, ACADEMIC, AND PROFESSIONAL GOALS."

"DURING MY UNDERGRADUATE JOURNEY I EXPERIENCED A LOT OF DIFFICULTIES DURING MY FIRST YEAR. FORTUNATELY THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM I WAS A PART OF EXPOSED ME TO A VARIETY OF CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT ACTIVITIES WHICH LED ME TO APPLY FOR MY FIRST JOB AS AN ORIENTATION LEADER. FROM THEN ON I BECAME MORE INVOLVED WITH MY CAMPUS COMMUNITY THROUGH STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, STUDENT EMPLOYMENT, AMBASSADORS, AND MORE. MY INVOLVEMENT EVEN LED ME TO CHANGE MY CAREER PATH FROM PSYCHIATRY TO HIGHER EDUCATION AND HAVE SINCE BEEN PASSIONATE ABOUT WORKING WITH STUDENTS DURING THEIR TIME AT THE UNIVERSITY."

IN MY FREE TIME I ENJOY PLAYING VIDEO GAMES AND SPENDING TIME WITH MY LOVED ONES.

A tip from the Lead Mentor

To be an effective mentor, you must have an open mind and the capacity to see a situation from another’s perspective. I always try to really see myself in their situation. Really listening and observing body language, whenever possible, is also super important. An individual can voice one thing while their body is saying something completely opposite. So, being receptive to another individual's languages (voice and body) is important. I love helping others. It is in my nature to help someone, especially if I have had similar struggles; If I happen to have similar struggles as someone that I am mentoring. I try my hardest to not make it about me, What I mean is: rather than mirroring what they are saying with my own story, I try to use what I learned from my struggle to guide the other person on their path to a resolution for their struggle.

meet the coaches ART OLAGUE, DIRECTOR RECREATIONAL SPORTS INCLUDER | CONTEXT | HARMONY | INPUT | RESTORATIVE When we asked Art why he became a certified strengths coach he said "I enjoy surrounding myself with individuals that strive to improve themselves." The Cliftonstrengths are the type of discipline that has a philosophy that's grounded in making an individual stronger. "Teamwork makes the Dream Work" is one of the mantra's that I live by! As an Includer I tap into this everyday by getting feedback from students, my colleagues, and my supervisor. I love to include people in the processes of building a comprehensive recreation program! I would love the opportunity to coach Ana Castillo, a Chicana novelist, poet, short story writer, essayist, editor, playwright, translator, and independent scholar. Her book “Massacre of the Dreamers” was my introduction to Chicana feminism and I’d love the opportunity to learn about her strengths and how she leverages them in her work. She became a I believe in the transformative power of leading from a strength-based approach, celebrating an individual's unique talents and helping them identify how to leverage them for their continued success, and becoming a certified coach has provided me with the opportunity to do that.   HEATHER OLAGUE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE LEARNER | ANALYTICAL | DISCIPLINE | RESPONSIBILITY | RESTORATIVE  I’m always interested in learning new things whether reading books or articles, watching videos on Pinterest to learn a new crafting skill, or watching the behind the scenes looks at how Disney makes their movies. I leaned on this strength when I first got to A&M-SA to set up the First-Year Experience office. There were so many moving parts and lots to learn. If you stop by my office, you will find a bookcase full of books because I never know when I might need to look up and learn something new. WHERE AND WHEN DID YOU TRANSFER FROM? "SUL ROSS RIO GRANDE COLLEGE SPRING 2021"

WHAT'S ESPECIALLY COOL ABOUT BEING A TRANSFER STUDENT ON OUR CAMPUS? "BEING A TRANSFER IS EXTRAORDINARY AMAZING BECAUSE I GET TO MEET NEW PEOPLE, MAKE NEW FRIENDS, AND GET TO KNOW THEIR GOALS IN LIFE AND WHAT IS INSPIRING THEM TO CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION."

WHAT ORGANIZATION(S) ARE YOU A PART OF ON CAMPUS? "I AM A MENTOR FOR THE SILVER LINERS AND WHEN I CAN, I TRY TO ATTEND CATHOLIC STUDENT ASSOCIATION EVENTS."

WHAT WILL YOU BE DRESSING UP THIS HALLOWEEN? OR WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF HALLOWEEN? "I AM NOT SURE WHAT I’LL BE DRESSING UP AS THIS HALLOWEEN. OUR OFFICE HAS A FEW IDEAS BUT NOTHING IS DECIDED YET. MY FAVORITE PART OF HALLOWEEN IS THE CREATIVITY OF THE HOMEMADE COSTUMES AND HOMEMADE TREATS."

WHAT IS YOUR MOTIVATION TO COME BACK/ OR FINISH SCHOOL? "MY MOTIVATION TO COME BACK AND FINISH SCHOOL WAS MY ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, NORMA. I STARTED WITH THE STUDENT BUSINESS OFFICE ON CAMPUS IN AUG. 2020. SHE WAS ALWAYS PUSHING FOR EDUCATION AND MOTIVATING OUR TEAM TO FINISH THEIR DEGREES. SHE ENCOURAGED ME TO AT LEAST START WITH A CLASS OR TWO AND WITH TIME, I’D GRADUATE WITH MY DEGREE."

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE TO INCOMING TRANSFER STUDENTS? "WORKING TOWARDS A DEGREE COMES WITH OBSTACLES FROM TIME TO TIME. THE GOAL IS NOT TO LET THOSE OBSTACLES KEEP YOU DOWN BUT TO PUSH YOU HARDER TOWARDS YOUR GOALS. IF LIFE KNOCKS US DOWN, WE MUST GET RIGHT BACK UP, DUST OURSELVES OFF, AND CONTINUE UNTIL WE REACH OUR GOAL (S). IN LIFE, NOTHING IS HANDED TO US BECAUSE WE HAVE TO WORK TOWARDS THE MAIN REASON WE BEGAN THIS JOURNEY OF GETTING A DEGREE IN THE FIRST PLACE."

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT TAMUSA? "MY FAVORITE PART OF TAMUSA IS THE SENSE OF BELONGING FROM THE STAFF TO THE STUDENTS. IT’S KNOWING NO MATTER WHAT CORNER YOU TURN, SOMEONE IS READY TO HELP OR DIRECT YOU TO THE RIGHT PERSON OR OFFICE TO ANSWER QUESTIONS OR ASSIST YOU THE BEST THEY CAN. IT’S A ‘NO MATTER WHAT, I CAN DO THIS!’ TYPE FEELING AROUND CAMPUS."

AS A TRANSFER STUDENT, HOW DO YOU GET INVOLVED ON CAMPUS? "AS A TRANSFER STUDENT, I TRY MY BEST TO GET INVOLVED WHEN I CAN. JAGSYNC IS PRETTY NEAT TO SEE ALL UPCOMING EVENTS AND IF IT’S SOMETHING I CAN ATTEND, EVEN FOR A LITTLE BIT, I SIGN UP."

WHY IS COMING TO SCHOOL IMPORTANT TO YOU? "COMING TO SCHOOL IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE GETTING EDUCATED AND EARNING A DEGREE SHOWS US THE HARD WORK WE PUT INTO IT AND THE OBSTACLES WE FACED TO EARN IT. GETTING EDUCATED OPENS THE DOORS TO MORE OPPORTUNITIES IN OUR LIVES AND HELPS LESSEN THE CHALLENGES THAT MAY COME OUR WAY IN LIFE. BEING EDUCATE HELPS GAIN A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT’S RIGHT, WRONG, FAIR, AND UNFAIR AND HELPS DEVELOP CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS. "
