How can family members support their student’s online education? Highlights of the Week “Give them space. Allow them to work on assignments in their room, a quiet place, outside. We understand this is a time where they are back at the house full time, and while some of their time could be spent teaching their younger siblings or cleaning the house, they have also had a strange transition to online learning. Bear with them and the best way to do that is allowing them to focus on what they need to get done. I also think constant reassurance could help some students. Everything is so uneasy around us, including school work that hearing "good job" or "I'm here to help" (even if they can't really help with college algebra) would just comfort the student, knowing it's a difficult transition.” ~Julianne Garcia: Junior majoring in Marketing
“Communication is key. Family members and students should communicate on an ongoing basis so that everyone knows what the expectations of the faculty/staff are. This includes communicating with professors as well. Overall, there should be an understanding that the student needs quiet/alone time in order to complete their courses.” ~Shanell Vespry: Sophomore majoring in Kinesiology (Physical Therapy Track)
The most helpful way for my family to support me in my online education is to understand that while I'm home more now, I don't automatically have extra time. I still have expectations that need to be met in my coursework. ~Tiffany Martinez: Sophomore majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies
