eady for a mind blowing information? Supplemental instruction is the ALC’s way of R going above and beyond for Jaguars! An SI Leader will attend your class, take note of the important topics and create activities to help you understand the subject - These would discussed in your scheduled session. While this is an amazing resource, SI Leaders can be limited. Students should schedule any appointment 2-3 days in advance as the slots fill up fast especially math sessions. Our Advice? Sign up especially early during midterms & finals. There are some classes that the department does not offer tutoring for, if this is the case, The ALC trusts that students can turn to their professors/peers for help. Online resources like Khan Academy, YouTube, and the Writing Center are Mercedes' partners in helping students with academic success. If a course you want tutoring for isn’t offered, rally up some friends and send in a suggestion because Mercedes tries to add services based on the growth in various areas. She keeps the needs and requests students make a priority for improvement.
Mercedes Torrez is the Coordinator for the ALC Department, and when we asked her a tough question we sparked great conversation; “How does the Academic Learning Center plan on growing alongside the population at A&M-SA?” She shared how her journey is coming full circle, she is a Texas A&M University San Antonio Alumnae and has seen first-hand the growth from her undergrad, graduate, and now professional years on the campus! Mercedes envisions “being able to expand the subjects that we offer services for, getting the SI Leaders into Math & Psychology courses, and getting a larger and more accessible space for the center.”
Mercedes started her academic career at Palo Alto Community College before transferring to A&M-SA for her Bachelors and Masters degree!

are not. Here is what makes the Silver Liners different and unique to our campus!
Our campus was a transfer only institution for seven years, so undoubtedly, transfer students hold a special place in A&M-SA’s heart! The Transfer Student Engagement Office created a mentorship program for secondsemester transfer students to take initiative in helping each other succeed.
O ur mentors take a course to learn the different resources our campus offers. This includes learning how to help their peers succeed in their academics and how to use their past experiences on campus to help their mentee have a smooth transition into Jaguar Life!
By becoming a mentor, you receive perks like a free Silver Liners t-shirt, access to the transfer student library, attending Mentor Monday events, getting your specific Clifton strengths and adding this leadership opportunity to your resume, while making a change in someone’s life and on our campus!
If helping others fills your bucket, this is the extracurricular for you! PAGE 08
