thomas
Thomas can be described as a cheeky, fussy little engine. He often gets into mischief, usually by being over-eager to do things best left to bigger and more sensible engines. But clouds never last long in Thomas’ world and he’s soon bustling about again, playing his part in the gardes and on his very own branch line, of which he is extremely proud.

Annie & clarabel
21
22
Annie and Clarabel were given to Thomas as a reward for being a Really Useful Engine. They are much loved, but have both seen better days. Annie carries passengers. She is always pulled by Thomas and travels facing him. Clarabel is a “composite” coach. She has one section for passengers and one for luggage and the guard. Clarabel always travels behind Annie facing away from Thomas. 4
5
staff
The Railway Staff are responsible for the smooth operation of the trains and stations on the Island of Sodor. They include Engineers, Train Drivers and Porters, and can be seen on station platforms or in the cabs of the engines, in their distinctive blue uniform.
23
james
24
29
James is a medium-sized engine. His six driving wheels are not as big as Gordon’s and not as small as Thomas’. He has a fine scarlet coat and brass dome and likes to think of himself as a Really Splendid Engine. This can occasionally lead to high-falutin’ ideas about the sort of work suitable for such a noble creature : invariably they land James into trouble.
30
T7
Chinese Dragon The colorful Chinese Dragon was brought to the Island for the Sodor carnival. His mysterious and exotic look tends to scare the other engines at first, but he is actually quite harmless.
25
26
The Chinese Dragon is actually made of paper, and must travel the Island by way of flatbed.
31
T8
32
James is a mixed traffic engine, which means he can pull both passenger coaches as well as freight cars
arthur Arthur is a big new tank engine whose job it is to shunt trucks and pull freight. He is as excited to work for Sir Topham Hatt as he is proud of his famous spotless record. Only time will tell if that record will stay as spotless as Arthur would like.
27
28
33
34
35
Arthur proves that his heart is just as big as his size when he forgives Thomas for getting him into a sticky mess. 6

mighty mac
Mighty Mac is the most unusual engine on the Narrow Gauge Railway. He is two engines in one – Mighty at one end, and Mac at the other! When the two work together he is the strongest engine on the Railway!
38
44
T10 Percy is an 0-4-0 saddle tank engine based on engines from the Avonside Engine Company.
39
Percy is the junior member of the principal team of engines. He is a happy little chap who’s normally quite content puffing around the yard with no particular desire for adventure in the great world outside. He is always keen to oblige, a fact of which the other engines are likely to take advantage.
45
molly Molly is a large, powerful and sensitive yellow engine who wants to be useful. She wants the other engines to think of her as the best.

bertie
49
Bertie has a great deal in common with Thomas. Ever since their Great Race, they have been the firmest of friends. Bertie’s strongest characteristic is his friendly grin and his readiness to help any engine prepared to admit that - just sometimes - - roads have their uses as well as rails Bertie is a single-decker front entrance bus, with a direct line of descent from the English charabanc of the 1930’s and 40’s.
51
52
After a rockslide at the Quarry, it was the quick thinking of Bill, along with his brother Ben, to rescue all of the workers and bring them to safety.
10
sir topham hatt
T12
55 T11
Sir Topham Hatt was awarded a knighthood for his services to the railway industry.
ben Ben and Bill are twin engines, and identical in every way. Ben enjoys being mischievous and teasing the other engines in the Railway, which is especially distracting to the senior members.
57
56
58
Ben is a low-slung 0-4-0 Saddle Tank Engine built by WT Bagnall of Stafford.
bill Bill and Ben are twin engines and identical in every way. Bill wears a huge devious grin most of the day, and spends his time working between the clay pits of the Sodor China Clay Company and the harbor.
50
Sir Topham Hatt is the director of the Railway and is responsible for making sure the engines are always Right on Time and Really Useful. He has a firm but kind manner in dealing with the engines and staff, and has risen through the ranks from a railway engineer to his current position.
lady hatt
53
54
59
Lady Hatt is Sir Topham Hatt’s wife and a gentle woman. The engines are extremely fond of her and like when she visits the railway or ride in one of their coaches. Although we have never met Sir Topham Hatt’s and Lady Hatt’s children, we do meet their grandchildren during their vacation to the seaside.
60 11
diesel
61
62
“Devious Diesel” , as he is referred to by the other engines, is always bad news when he’s around. Oily, scheming and ever ready to stir up trouble in the shed, his characteristic smirk is a sure sign that someone, somewhere is in for a bit of trouble.
68
67
69
After telling false stories about Henry, Diesel was sent away by Sir Topham Hatt.
mavis
diesel 10 Diesel 10 is a renegade diesel engine on the Island of Sodor who is 10 out of 10 for brutal strength and devious deeds, and is out to destroy the harmony of Sir Topham Hatt’s Railway.
63
64
When we last saw Diesel 10, he had fallen into a barge sailing down a Sodor canal.
12
T13
Mavis is a 0-6-0 Drewry diesel/mechanical locomotive.
donald
65
Mavis is a feisty young diesel engine who works at the quarry. She is full of her own ideas and doesn’t take kindly to advice. She has a lot to learn about the Troublesome Trucks, but with Toby’s help she is learning to be a Really Useful Engine.
66
doUGLAS
Other than their name plaques and numbers, Donald and his brother Douglas are twins. Donald hates to be parted from his brother, and loves to play practical jokes on the other engines. Sir Topham Hatt had ordered one goods engine from Scotland, but was surprised when both Donald and Douglas showed up.
T14

duncan
72
Duncan means well but will “Rock ‘n Roll” whenever the mood takes him. He tends to have a mind of his own which makes him obstinate and rude on occasions. He has a great big heart but is a little misguided. Duncan is now part of Sir Topham Hatt’s narrow gauge railway of which he feels he is very overworked.
edward
73
Edward is one of the older engines in Sir Topham Hatt’s railway. The most important thing about Edward is that he’s good-willed and kind. When the other engines misbehave, it’s Edward that Sir Topham Hatt turns to in order to calm everyone down and restore order.
79
80
78
Duncan first went to the Narrow Gauge Railway to help out when Peter Sam after he’d had an accident
harvey
74
75
Harvey is big-hearted and relentlessly cheerful. Mocked by James and Gordon for not looking ‘normal’ when he arrived, Harvey proved himself to be very useful by clearing up after a crash, so is now a popular addition to the group. He’s a mainline worker, but because of his shape, doesn’t fit into the Tidmouth Sheds and has to park parallel. He’s happy working in the yards, the Docks and building sites, but his true home is at the ‘Sodor Water Works’.
Edward did not have a number in the first original stories. It was only after Book 6 of the series that Edward received his #2.
81
T15
elizabeth
76
Elizabeth is a beautifully restored vintage steam wagon who, like all trucks on the Island, believes that roads are much better than rails. She tends to wear a scowl and will be quick to correct the engines who comment on her age by exclaiming “I’m not old - - I’m vintage!”.
77
82
83
84
She has no patience for dawdlers. If you are here, you better be here to work. 14

87
toby
Sir Handel’s name was originally Falcon, but was changed when he came to Sir Topham Hatt’s railway.
spencer Spencer is just about the shiniest, sleekest engine the Island of Sodor has ever seen. A striking silver express engine, Spencer was brought to the Island as the private engine of the visiting Duke and Duchess.
91
Brought up under instruction from Duke, Sir Handel is one of the oldest engines on the Narrow Gauge Railway. He generally is of the opinion that he knows it all and should be the boss. This occasionally leads him to have a tantrum or bad attitude. Still, he always gets the job done.
Sir Topham Hatt brought Toby to his railway to help out with Thomas’ branch line.
alfie Alfie is an excavator who makes even the toughest job in the quarry look easy. He is friendly, helpful and loves to do all the dirty work.
T16
Toby is old-fashioned, both in looks and outlook. Every engine, no matter how old, wants to be Really Useful and having once nearly been scrapped, Toby is always happy to work. He’s not above being temperamental sometimes, but since he works mainly up an outlying quarry line, he can work off his moods without causing grief to anyone except his own faithful coach Henrietta.
88
92
His favorite expression is “more dirt means more fun”.
93
harold In a railway family Harold can hardly avoid having a high profile. He brings a welcome spot of dash to the quiet landscape of Sodor whenever he appears and even if the noise he makes is occasionally wearing, he is good-hearted and the engines are always pleased to see him.

iron ‘arry E iron bert
97 Because of his grim job of melting down engines, ‘Arry is sometimes referred to as the “Grim Messenger of Doom” by the other engines.
Iron Bert is based on the British Class 08 type of Shunters.
T17
98
Iron ‘Arry, along with his brother Iron Bert, is a diesel engine that works down in the scrap yards and smelters sheds. As with most diesel engines, ‘Arry feels that diesel engines are much superior to steam engines and enjoys breaking them down when he gets the chance.
Iron Bert, along with his brother Iron ‘Arry, is a diesel engine that works down in the scrap yards and smelters sheds. Iron Bert loves breaking up old steam engines, and would really like to melt down Stepney and Oliver if given the chance.
102
henry Henry is a long, fast engine. He has a thoroughbred look and like all thoroughbreds, tends to be somewhat highly strung and prone to illness. But he has his new shape now, and sympathetically driven, he’ll give any engine a run for its money.
rusty Rusty is a very self-assured and dedicated worker with a huge heart. Rusty loves adventure and the other engines, which makes their lives much easier.
101
103
99
Rusty was brought to the railway to help out Sir Handel and Peter Sam while Skarloey was away.
104
T19 Before his shape was changed, Henry had to have special coal brought in so he could run properly.

peter sam T21
Peter Sam is a happy and kind engine, but is a little vulnerable and often teased by the others. He, like Sir Handel, was instructed by Duke and has great respect for him deep down, despite teasing him about his age. A hard worker by nature, Peter Sam seldom grumbles about late hours or extra work.
T22
Peter Sam was actually known as Stuart, but was changed when he came to Sir Topham Hatt’s railway.
Lady is a very special engine who holds the secret to the Magic Railroad. With her use of the magic gold dust, she was able to travel to the Island of Sodor and help Thomas defeat Diesel 10. Lady’s face will only appear when she is on the Island of Sodor.

117
murdoch Murdoch is a mighty engine with 10 drive wheels. He was brought to the Island to help with the heavy workload and pull freight on the mainline. As shy as he is strong, Murdoch can often be found seeking peace and quiet. Murdoch finds that the countryside is not as peaceful and quiet as he would have liked when he encounters a track full of wandering, noisy sheep. 20

gordon 33 Gordon is the senior member of the engine family, the fastest and most powerful of Sir Topham Hatt’s string - and he knows it. He’s goodhearted, though, and always willing to forgive, and use his superior strength to help smaller engines out of trouble. 21

T24 T25
rheneas
122
123
Rheneas is a tough little engine but, because of his age, often breaks down. His sole purpose is to work hard and uphold the fine reputation of the railway system. Because of this, he is well respected by both engines and drivers alike. When the Railway was in danger of closing, it was Rheneas’ heroics which saved the line, and brought his passengers home.
128 billy Billy is boisterous, bubbly and bursting with enthusiasm. He thinks he can do it all. He is a doer, not a thinker. In the end, he always wants to do the right thing!
skarloey Skarloey is a very chipper, hard worker, who shares his duties with Rheneas. He is a proper engine who is dedicated to his narrow gauge line and always eager to help out when he’s needed. Skarloey is a narrow gauge industrial tank engine, based on those built in England in the 1860’s.

stanley Stanley is a new tank engine on the Island of Sodor. He’s grey, chrome and shiny. He’s a little bit bigger, a little bit newer and a little bit stronger than Thomas. Stanley is a very good engine and is everyone’s best friend: the boy-next-door of Sir Topham Hatt’s railway.

There’s nothing he wouldn’t do. When you’re a friend in need… Stanley is a friend indeed.

Troublesome trucks
134
Emily is a beautiful engine with shiny paintwork and gleaming brass fittings. After she rescued Oliver and Toad when they were stuck on the tracks, Sir Topham Hatt rewarded her with a brand new pair of coaches.
The Troublesome Trucks are the rascals of Sir Topham Hatt’s railway who take great delight in causing trouble for whichever engine has to pull them. Noisy and silly, they talk a lot and do not attend to what they are doing. The Troublesome Trucks are actually mixed goods wagons, so they can be used at all areas on the island, but especially enjoy causing trouble at the coal mines and quarries.
Before Emily got her own coaches, she pulled Annie and Clarabel for a short time much to Thomas dismay!
135
Like all cranes, Cranky has a high and mighty attitude which often annoys the engines. Cranky knows that if he ever gets too big for his crane hook, the engines have ways of getting back at him. However, Cranky enjoys teasing them because, he says, it makes for good working relationships.
oliver Oliver, along with his brake van Toad, was saved from being scrapped by Douglas, whom he is now very grateful of. He was given a new coat of green paint, and now proudly works on Duck’s branch line.
