WINNING LETTER To the Editor Of late a male friend and I went on vacation to Umtentweni on the Natal South Coast. One morning we decided to go for an early morning swim, dressed in swimming-wear only... Nevertheless, after the swim, we decided to take a stroll along the beach. Our bold spirits got the better of us and before we realised it our ‘short’ walk had taken us all the way to the Port Shepstone Bridge! At this stage we felt tired and noticed a sand road close to the bridge. We decided to head back for Umtentweni along this sand road. After a short while, I started doubting our choice to take the deserted route, as no cars were in sight and we were surrounded by dense bush either side of us. I started getting concerned for our safety. Unexpectedly we noticed a gap in the bushes and saw the most remarkable green fairways of the Port Shepstone Golf Course. This is a moment that I will never forget as I recall the feeling of security as well as the magnificent brilliance of the golf course! We were parched by this stage and decided to walk to the clubhouse for some refreshments. The hospitality shown to us by the local golfers as well as the atmosphere at the clubhouse was great! This is where I picked up a copy of your magazine.

Clause previously won the award in 1995 and 2003. “There is no greater accomplishment in business than to be acknowledged by your peers,” says Clause. “In my 24 years in South Africa my real goal as a PGA professional was to see the role of the PGA professional raised to a higher level at his or her club or facility. I pushed hard for better education and better training that involved the PGA, the professionals and the apprentices. My philosophy has always been that we need to educate the professionals so that we can evaluate them and ultimately appreciate them.” Clause says he is proud to represent an association that is making great strides in South African golf. “I really feel that we are producing a new generation of PGA professionals who are a compliment to some of South Africa’s legendary professionals from

I am proud of the way they put their members and guests first with consistent service, attention to detail and tireless efforts.” Clause is well known for his hands-on approach at a golf club and for his ability to make even visiting golfers feel welcome. “All we do is treat our members as royalty and our guests as members for their stay. O
ne of the most common sayings in golf is that 90% of the game is played between your ears. That leaves 10% for the rest!
When I was a junior I believed everything my mentors and coaches told me. I had no clue what the mental side of the game was all about so I just let that 90% be and focused my attention on the 10% component of the game. I split it up into 5% for equipment and 5% for the physical or technical sides of the game and boy, was there a lot of the game crammed into that very small percentage! The effects of playing the game with the wrong equipment certainly had a massive influence on how the mind reacted and the kind of battles or compensations that would take place to gain some form of control. I remember as a junior and throughout most of my amateur career most of the equipment that moved in and out of my bag always seemed to play differently. Nothing really matched but with all the practice I did I would find out about the characteristics of the equipment in the bag in no time and just use it as effectively as I could out on the course. I remember it seemed to take me forever to find a 3 wood

that I liked! If clubs didn’t behave I would turf them to the locker or trade them in quickly for something that worked. Everything was all feel based, how the club looked made you feel good, how it played, the flight and the feel off the club face made you feel good - that was the one! There was always that favourite club in the bag, one you could do almost anything with, one that you always seemed to hit close and then there were those that only seemed to draw or move right when you hit them with what felt like the same swing. Back in those days technology was less than ideal but we made the most of what we had and always found a way to score! I went through the transition from wooden heads to metal and from steel shafts to graphite. There wasn’t an abundance of cash around but I batted smart and sat just behind the technology curve with my purchases. Back then new equipment came out every two to three seasons and even season for season would be okay to deal with, but now with the saturated and competitive market out there, there’s something new and improved being banged out every three months! Spoiled for choice at times and maybe that sometimes poses a mental dilemma.

The Eishberg analogy 10% above 90% below, hidden but awesomely powerful such is the MIND!
The key basics being: Positivity (belief structure), Tension Management (breath control and routine discipline) and State Management (how you carry yourself and your attitude out there). If you genuinely want to improve your golf leaps and bounds then not only should you resolve technical or physical issue in a structured manner with your relative facilitators but you should also resolve mental ill discipline just as quickly as you would put merit into resolving a technical issue. After SUCCESS, build on it - After failure, learn from it and visualize SUCCESS! When taking statistics of your round, don’t just focus on your physical or technical stat percentages. Also rate out of 10 what your belief structure was like, your tension levels before, during and after your round were like, how you carried yourself, how good you were at sticking to your routines, what your course management was like, your preparation for the event and even the work or relationship you had with your caddy. The more information you can access about yourself becomes a very power tool in situational awareness and is a wonderful stepping stone towards implementing habits of success.
A lot of top level professionals find it difficult to part with trusted old faithfuls and may retain the service in consistency and control past quite a few models of supposed technological improvement. Equipment company’s fight for market share should not be at your peril. The impulse to buy because a certain Professional supposedly uses that driver or looks good in an ad swinging it should not lure you into a mental conundrum. The key is not to get distracted by things, “buy” impulse - don’t fix what isn’t broken! By all means available use the technology curve to your advantage. In this day and age the precision manufacturing of equipment is so far superior to yesteryear, sets blend far more effectively, shafts react more consistently, club fitment is now a qualified art in the industry and the use of launch monitors are there to analyze ball flights and data accurately. Whatever you do or use, make sure it doesn’t affect that 90% anymore than it needs to. Peace of mind is peace in game ;-) The other 5%, the physical side of your golfing wellbeing; how strong, flexible, or fit you are and what you know about the technical attributes of your swing also has a massive impact on your mental side. So, that yesteryear mere 10% had a huge effect on that supposed 90% mental make up that defined our game. I find what I have learnt on my journey now is that the mental aspects of the game are a lot smaller a percentage holistically and much simpler to manage in the modern day than in the past. We know so much more about the structure of the mind and how to compartmentalize priorities to improve on it, much in the same way we do with swing analysis.

The effects of optimized equipment geared to our physique and swing type has also limited the negative effect mental imprinting has presented to us in the past. There is no excuse in this modern era of the game not to have your equipment checked and fitted to your spec! The use of TrackMan and Flight Scope is there for us all to utilize, not just for club fitting but also for finding statistics to fine tune technical adjustments. With the aid of better statistical information and also the combination of digital analysis, even the dreaded technical “lurgy” can be spotted and changed effectively. So, barring even a few more push ups and sit ups, or even better still an effectively set up TPI strength, functional mobility or fitness assessment, we have more than enough opportunity to sort out our physical limitations and find more peace of mind. At very least we should make the most of what we’ve got ;-) So, what other 90% rules are out there? They say 90% of lessons are given on the long game and from what I’ve seen I could vouch for that! 90% of practice time is spent on the range, who doesn’t like smacking a golf ball! 90% of people think their short game is good enough, until they check there stats! 90% don’t feel they need to do any mental training, until the game is all but done and dust for them! 90% of golfers have weak grips, 90% stand shut to the target and come over the top - there”fore” 90% fade or slice the ball. 90% of golfers think their handicaps are too low, the other 10% are quite happy where they are! Frustrated Rory McIlroy throws club into lake after botched shot. “It felt good at the time,” a rueful McIlroy later said of the incident in comments carried by the PGA Tour website. “I just let frustration get the better of me. It was heat of the moment, and I mean, if it had of been any other club I probably wouldn’t have but I didn’t need a 3‑iron for the rest of the round so I thought, why not.” The club “must have went a good 60, 70 yards,” he joked. McIlroy composed himself to finish with a second round of 70.

But when Rory McIlroy pulled his second shot on the eighth hole of the WGC Cadillac Championship into a lake, he might as well have been channeling the much loved Adam Sandler character. Before continuing his round with a dropped ball, the four-time major winner launched the 3-iron used to play the offending shot into the water as well.

While an improvement on his previous weeks performance at the Honda Classic event, where he failed to make the cut, the Northern Irishman’s frustration with elements of his game was still clear. “I think every golfer feels it because I don’t hit shots like the one I hit on 8 on the range,” he said. “That’s what really bothers me, the fact that I get out on the course and I hit shots that I’m not seeing when I’m in a more relaxed environment. “So it’s a little bit of mental, a little bit of physical. It’s just everything is not quite matching up.”

Fisher fires to fabulous victory at Africa Open A brand of compelling, positive and precise golf netted Trevor Fisher Junior nine birdies for a fabulous eightunder-par 64 and the title of 2015 Africa Open champion at the East London Golf Club.

isher Junior’s five stroke victory on 24-under-par 264 not only extended South Africa’s stranglehold in the tournament to eight successive years, but secured the 36-year-old the elusive European Tour card he has been chasing for nearly a decade.
“I only had three bogeys for the week, which is quite an achievement,” Fisher Junior said after a remarkable round that took his weekend tally to 17-under-par after a 63 on the third day. That’s how you win tournaments; by keeping bogeys off your card. My mind set was great. I didn’t let anything faze me, and I hit my long irons very well. All you want to do is give yourself a chance.” It was the 129th South African triumph on the European Tour, which will now have a new – and very popular member, judging by all the congratulatory messages on social media. Englishman Matt Ford, who led through the first two rounds, did little wrong as he also pursued a maiden European Tour win. Ford carded a worthy five-under-par 67 with a

bogey at the ninth the only blemish on his card, but he was kept at bay by the sheer brilliance of the winner. The European Tour rookie made birdies at the first and third holes, but Fisher matched him shot for shot. The Modderfontein golfer’s only blemish came at the short par-four fifth, when he was short of the green with his approach after his tee-shot stopped under the lip of the fairway bunker just before the crest of the hill. From there Fisher three-putted, but rebounded with birdies at the sixth and seventh holes and made an excellent par save on eight when his drive was way left. “I don’t want to define myself through my golf,” Fisher said, explaining how he brushes off the adversities that inevitably come in a final round. I try to be myself whether I play a good shot or a bad shot; I just try to be a happy guy. I actually felt very comfortable out there, although I was a bit nervous towards the end.” The back 10 at East London Golf Club features a zoo-full of wildlife that are astonishingly tame – including Nyala, Impala and Blue Duiker – and

For Fisher Junior, the father of two daughters, the victory brings with it a European Tour exemption until the end of 2016. “I’ve tried so hard to get that European Tour card, for so many years,” Fisher Junior said. “Obviously it’s a massive step for my career because that’s where all South African golfers want to be.”
Fisher Junior said it was not the first time he has gone really low on this coastal links-type course. “A few years ago I went seven-under here to lead after the first two rounds, but Charl Schwartzel won. This year I thought it was my time and I had confidence because I’ve done it before on this course,” he said. Third place was shared by two Spaniards – Eduardo de la Riva and Jorge Campillo – and Denmark’s Morten Orum Madsen, who all shot 66s to finish on 16-under, while John Parry and Jaco van Zyl shared sixth on 14-under. Van Zyl had started the day four strokes behind Fisher Junior, and also had high hopes of securing his first European Tour win. But he endured a mediocre day, especially with the putter, and could only post a two-under-par 70.

Even more success and glory could lie ahead for the ever-smiling golfer because the Investec Cup finale, with its R3.5 million bonus pool prize for the winner is coming up and Fisher Junior is in pole position to win one of the biggest prizes in South African golf once again.

Samu prevails at Gauteng North Girls At the start of the 2013 season, Gauteng junior Ivanna Samu was just another junior with big dreams. In two short years, though, the 16-year-old Ruimsig golfer has risen to third in the Womens Golf SA (WGSA) Senior Rankings and holds the number one spot in the Junior standings.

amu notched five victories in 2014, including the prestigious Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Championship, and reeled in a further 10 top five finishes on the junior circuit. However, her meteoritic rise was instigated by a runner-up finish at the Gauteng North Junior Girls’ Open Championship early in February. Last month the leggy teenager came full circle when she claimed a play-off victory in the 2015 edition at Centurion CC. Samu came into the event on the back of a runner-up finish in the Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies at Glendower and carried a lot of confidence into the junior championship after her successful debut on the Sunshine Ladies Tour. She dominated early on with an opening six-under-

par 67 to lead by three strokes from North West junior Michelle Swanepoel and fellow Gauteng golfer, Woo Ju Son. Son carded a two under 71 in the final round, but Swanepoel signed for another 70 to tie Samu at six under 140 and force the championship into extra time. “Michelle was playing really well and it took two extra holes before I took the title. Although I won quite a few times last year, I still get very nervous when I am in contention and I’m sure that Michelle felt the same.” “The course at Centurion was in superb condition, and I am really pleased that I used all the experience I gained playing at Glendower to keep it together and go one better this year.”

SA’s Snyman defeats Scottish Open champ in PE
Moynihan, a member of the 2013 Curtis Cup and 2014 Eisenhower Trophy team, scorched the course in 66 strokes to set the clubhouse target at 10-under-par 206. However, Snyman answered with a 69 to tie the world number 35 at the end of regulation play. In three extra trips down the par-five closing hole, the pair were still at a stalemate. Snyman’s fourth tee shot found the rough on the right, while Moynihan finished just off the 18th fairway. Both players hit their approaches into the right greenside bunker. Moynihan splashed out to leave himself a 12-footer for birdie, but Snyman’s trap shot flew the green.
Western Province amateur Ian Snyman defeated reigning Carrick Neil Scottish Open champion Gavin Moynihan with a perfectly timed flop-shot to end a dramatic four-hole play-off for the Eastern Province/ Border Stroke Play title last month.

nyman carded rounds of 68 and 69 at Port Elizabeth GC to take the 36-hole lead at seven-under-par 137, while first round leader Moynihan from Ireland followed an opening 67 with a 73 to lag three shots off the pace going into the final round.
“I had 10 meters to the pin, but I couldn’t chip because I had very little green to work with,” the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation player explained. “I hit a flop-shot to make sure the ball would stop, but it hit the center of the cup and dropped for birdie. Gavin’s putt looked like it was going to drop all the way to the hole, but it died just on the lip. I must thank my coach, Paul MacKenzie. “We worked really hard on my game last year and that flop-shot is all down to his short-game drills.” Snyman won the 2014 Western Province Premier Tour Order of Merit with four victories and a clutch of top five finishes and lifted the Sanlam Cape Province Open Championship last year March.

Courageous Coussaud triumphs at SA Stroke Play Ugo Coussaud claimed the South African Stroke Play Championship title last month, but the first French champion in the history of the prestigious event had to show some real French flair at the final hole to triumph at Port Elizabeth GC. “I don’t really know if I want to laugh or cry,” Coussaud said. “My arms are still shaking a little. This is the most unbelievable moment of my life. I don’t know what to do; I just want to smile.”

“Before this win, my proudest moment was when I won the University National Championships with my team in 2012 in Canada,” the Frenchman said. “But this is definitely the highlight of my career. Phillips coasts to Players Championship victory
Phillips caught SA number one Mellette Hendrikse and overhauled overnight leader Basil Naidoo with a carefully constructed one-over-par 73 for a three stroke victory on eight-over-par 224. “I came third in 2013 and I was a joint runner-up last year, so people said I should win this year, but let me tell you, it was a very hard grind to get to the winner’s circle,” Phillips said. “Only the top 50 seniors in the country qualify to play the Players Championship, so to compete against the cream of the crop and come out on top is incredibly special for me.”

Hendrikse produces magic to win at Bryanston
While the victory at Bryanston GC also took the sting out of a recent runner-up finish in the Players Championship, the win lifted Hendrikse to an all-time high point’s record in the South African Golf Association’s Senior Rankings. Hendrikse vaulted to 97.10 points and broke the previous record of 94.25, set by Francois le Roux from De Zalze in 2013. “This is a really nice way to start the season, because I have to admit that I feel the pressure out there,” said the reigning Indwe Risk Services SA Senior Amateur Stroke Play champion.

outh Africa’s top ranked senior Mellette Hendrikse rambled to another play-off victory over Lawrence Franklin in the Central Gauteng Golf Union’s Senior Open to claim his second win of the season last month. The 54-year-old Akasia player was slow off the mark with an opening 75 and lagged four strokes behind Franklin, but he hauled himself into contention with a solid final round 73 to tie the first round pacesetter for the lead on four-over-par 144 in regulation play. Par at the first extra hole was enough to secure the victory for Hendrikse, who won the Gauteng North Senior Open in similar fashion last month.

ethu Myeki and Demi Flanagan ensured a superb one-two finish for Border when the rising stars beat out some of the country’s top amateurs to take the honours in the Border Ladies Championship last month. Myeki, a graduate from the South African Golf Development Board, claimed the biggest triumph of her career when she clinched the A-Division title by two strokes from Flanagan. The 21-year old Wesbank golfer opened with a 77 in blustery conditions at East London GC to set the first round target, but was followed closely by Woo-Ju Son from Gauteng (78) while Flanagan carded a 79 at her home course to finish just a further stroke back alongside another local challenger, Yolanda Duma from West Bank. The country’s fourth ranked Cara Gorlei charged into contention in the second round, but Myeki matched her 72 to open up a four stroke lead on the Western Province player. Flanagan lagged five strokes off the pace after carding a 75 and Son slipped fourth on 154 after signing for a 77. Despite coming under pressure from Flanagan in the final round, Myeki held her nerve and fired a closing 75 to triumph on 224. Flanagan charged to second on her own after posting a 72 for the lowest round of the day. Son closed with a 74 to finish on 229, two strokes ahead of Gauteng’s Kaleigh Telfer (82-74-75) and three clear of Gorlei, who signed for a 79. “This is without a doubt my biggest amateur win,” said a delighted Myeki.

Marco Loubser won the event in a playoff against Rosswell Sinclair after the pair ended on 5 under par 139. Loubser was fast out the gate registering a brilliant 66 for his first round. The heat however caught up with the Centurion CC member and he was only able to record a second round score of 73. Rosswell took another path to his score registering rounds of 70 and 69 to tie Marco’s score. The first
round saw Sinclair end with a string of 5 birdies in the last 6 holes and he ended the second round in similar fashion by recording 4 birdies in the last 5 holes. The top six positions recorded scores of level par or better on a testing Akasia CC layout. Among these players was Kifentse Nukeri who shot rounds of 75 and 68 to record the lowest score for the second round and end 4 strokes off the pace. Nukeri shot a stern warning to his competition in the u17, u19 and u23 Inter Provincial teams that he is here to compete for a spot. The 16 year old youngster is a product of the SAGDB’s efforts in the Gauteng North region. “It’s his way of thanking the selectors for the faith they put in him.” Rohan de Beer, manager for the SAGDB in Gauteng North said. “I’ve always maintained that he has great potential and brilliant work etiquette. He was a very late selection for the u19 IPT at the end of last year and this gave him the belief that he is good enough to compete with the best.”

The last Scot standing was thrilled to follow in the footsteps of his compatriots Michael Stewart and Brian Soutar, who triumphed in 2011 and 2012 respectively, and humbled to add his name to the marquee list of champions that includes Ernie Els, Retief Goosen and Trevor Immelman. “This is massive; the biggest win of my career so far,” the Perthshire player said. “I’ve won a few tournaments before, but this is by far the biggest win. You look at the trophy and

Grandfather Neels Els patrolled the fairways, while his father, Dragan, did bag duty this week. “It’s always fun having my dad on the bag in those emotional moments out there,” Rebula said. “We both get frustrated with each other at times, but I really enjoy spending time with my dad and I think he also enjoys being out there with me. And it’s always fantastic to have my granddad’s support.”

Grand Slam of Golf moves to Trump National in LA.
T
he Grand Slam of Golf is moving to Trump National in suburban Los Angeles this fall.
The multi-year agreement between the PGA of America and the Trump Organization was announced in early March. The event will be played Oct 19-21 in its return to the U.S. mainland for the first time since 1993. It features the winners of golf’s four majors: the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open and PGA Championship. Trump National, whose owner Donald Trump attended the announcement, features a 7,242-yard, par-71 layout with lakes, massive bunkers, waterfalls and scenic views.

dislocated shoulder won’t keep Arnold Palmer from hitting his ceremonial tee shot at Augusta National.
Palmer, a four-time Masters champion, dislocated his right shoulder in a fall at the Father-Son Challenge in December, according to ESPN.com. He said he hasn’t been allowed to swing since . “I’m looking forward to being out on that tee even if I fan it,” Palmer told reporters at Trump National Doral. He was at the resort for the dedication of the Arnold Palmer Villa. Palmer has been an honorary starter at Augusta National since 2007. Nicklaus joined him in 2010, and Player joined the group two years later.

The R&A Publishes Report on Golf Facilities around the World The unprecedented report has been produced by the National Golf Foundation (NGF), a golf market research organisation based in the USA, and sets out the extent of golf ’s development worldwide.
T
he report reveals that, by the end of 2014, there were 34,011 golf facilities in 206 countries around the world. It shows that 79% of these facilities are located in ten countries: the USA, Japan, Canada, England, Australia, Germany, France, Scotland, South Africa and Sweden. Although the USA is home to 45% of the world’s golf facilities and Europe to 22%, the report also states that there are 50 countries with only one golf facility compared to 30 with more than 100 and eight (outside the USA) with more than 500. The report tracks the development of golf worldwide and finds that 696 golf courses are under construction or in advance planning. While 80% of these new projects are in Asia, Europe and North America, there are clear signs the sport is spreading with countries such as Belarus, Azerbaijan and Georgia opening their first golf courses in the last

two years and initial courses under construction in countries as diverse as Macedonia and Sao Tome and Principe. Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A said, “The new report provides a fascinating insight in to the development of golf around the world and gives us a precise measure of the number of facilities for the first time. It will provide a benchmark for future monitoring and enable us to identify areas of potential growth. The NGF has done an excellent job in conducting this research which we believe will be extremely useful for the golf industry at large.” The R&A has provided funding for the creation of the definitive worldwide database and report which provides a benchmark for measuring the extent of golf’s global footprint. The NGF team spent four years and 25,000 working hours surveying golf facilities around the world using global information sources, satellite/mapping imagery and on-theground contacts. The report will be produced biennially and will allow monitoring of the sport’s development in future years. The Golf around the world report is available to download at www.RandA.org.

“The one thing you learn is you don’t win as often as you think,” said Harrington, who also moved to 21st in the FedExCup standings. “I’m just enjoying winning The Honda Classic. “It’s not about what it means to my career or what it means going forward. Method 1.) Using the palm of your hand, slightly flatten prawns. Place flour in a bowl. Add prawns. Toss to coat.

8 large King Prawns, peeled, deveined, Tails intact ¼ cup plain Flour 1 Egg ½ cup shredded Coconut ½ cup Breadcrumbs Vegetable oil, for shallow-frying

2.) Whisk egg and 2 tablespoons cold water together in a shallow bowl. Combine coconut and breadcrumbs on a plate. Dip 1 prawn in egg mixture, then breadcrumb mixture. Place on a plate. Repeat with remaining prawns. 3.) Heat oil in a large frying pan. Cook prawns for 2 minutes each side or until golden and cooked through. 4.) Cut all the fruits into small cubes & mix together. Add Black Pepper to taste

Uit die joggie se “bek” deur Wynand Stander
2015 – St Andrews – Britse Ope – ek sien uit na die jaar en veral na die Britse Ope wat elke 5 jaar mos op St Andrews gespeel word en hierdie jaar is dit weer tyd. Louis hou baie van Links gholf en veral as dit op St Andrews is, dan is hy ekstra gemotiveerd, so ek sien uit na daardie toernooi.

aar voor ons daar kom, eers ‘n paar ander dinge. Nouja, na ‘n baie besige jaar vol goeie en minder goeie tye op die gholfbaan, is ons reg om die nuwe gholfjaar aan te pak. Die lewe op toer kan maar kwaai eensaam raak vir ‘n joggie en jy mis jou familie baie. Veral as jy jong kinders het, mis jy ‘n groot deel van hulle grootword tyd. Dit is juis hoekom ek verlede jaar met Louis gesels het om ‘n “bag share” te probeer. ‘n Vriend van my, Greg Hearmon, wie lank vir Retief Goosen gedra het, is juis ook ‘n persoon met klein kindertjies. Ons het die tweede helfte van 2014 om die beurt Louis se gholfsak gedra

wat beteken het dat ons meer tyd by die huis en by ons families kon deurbring. Dit het baie goed gewerk en ons gaan gedurende 2015 daarmee voortgaan. Greg sal opi sak wees tot na die Masters waarna ek dan weer sal oorneem tot na die Britse Ope, so as julle my nie opi sak sien nie, moenie skrik en dink ek is “gefire” nie! Louis woon nou in Amerika aangesien sy kinders hierdie jaar moet begin skoolgaan, dus kry hy en sy gesin net gedurende Desember en Januarie kans om bietjie die plaaslewe op Melkhoutfontein te geniet.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - U I T D I E J O G G I E S E B E K Hierdie jaar het hy ekstra lank gebly en is eers middel Februarie terug om sy gholfjaar af te skop. Met Greg wat die eerste gedeelte van die jaar opi sak is, het ek nou ‘n lang af tyd om na my ander sakebelange om te sien. Nouja, terug na die “poets” wat ek in die vorige uitgawe genoem het. Louis hou daarvan om poetse te bak en almal moet maar wakker wees as hy in die rondte is. Aan die einde van 2013 het hy vir my ‘n BMW F800 motorfiets as geskenk gegee. Al was ek voorheen ‘n “cop” wie baie motorfiets gery het, het ek nie ‘n motorfietslisensie gehad nie. Met so ‘n fantastiese Kersgeskenk het ek ook nie op my laat wag nie en die hele Mosselbaai my nuwe fiets gaan wys. Vroeg in Januarie gaan skryf en toe my motorfietslisensie eksamen en tot almal se pret dop ek die toets met 1 punt. Natuurlik het ek skaars uit die gebou geloop of my selfoon begin lui. En lui en lui en lui. Mense wat ek nie eens ken nie, bel my oordat ek die toets gedop het. Dit is toe dat ek agter kom dat Louis die mense so opsteek om my te bel oor die ou klein foutjie. ‘n Week of wat later bel Darren Scott van Bolz Radio my oor ‘n onderhoud van hoe dit is om Louis Oosthuizen se joggie te wees. ‘n Hele 10 minute hou hy my besig met allerhande vrae oor die Britse Ope wat Louis gewen het, sy Double Eagle by die Masters, die uitspeelstryd teen Bubba Watson ens. Teen die

einde vra hy my waarmee ek ry en natuurlik trap ek mooi in die strik en vertel hom van die BMW geskenk wat ek gekry het. Ek vat daai asie hook, line & sinker en ons gesels te lekker oor die fantastiese fiets (Darren het ook een) en ek meld dat ek nou al ‘n hele paar honderd km met die BMW gery het. En dit is toe dat hy die vraag vra: “and tell me Wynand, you have done all those hundreds of km’s on your new bike without a valid license?” Eers raak ek stil en besef toe dit is weer daai Louis Oosthuizen poetsbakker wat hom opgesteek het om my te bel. Twee nul in sy guns, maar dalk kry ek my beurt die jaar om die sakie met hom reg te stel…

Tiger Woods ‘hopeful’ of Masters return from indefinite break.

ormer world number one Tiger Woods is “hopeful” of a return for the Masters but will still miss the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.
The 14-time major winner is taking an indefinite break from the game having described this year’s performances as “unacceptable for tournament play”. “I’ve put in a lot of time and work on my game and I’m making strides,” said Woods, 39. Woods added that he won’t return until he can “compete at the highest level”. He has won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, held in Orlando, Florida, eight times in his career. In a statement on his official website, Woods said: “I spoke to Arnold and told him that I will not play in his tournament this year. I’m sorry I won’t be in Orlando next week, but I know it will be a really successful event. “I hope to be ready for the Masters, and I will continue to work hard preparing for Augusta.”

Woods, 39, withdrew injured with back problems from last month’s event at Torrey Pines after just 12 holes, having missed the cut at the Phoenix Open the week before. The Masters in Augusta, which Woods has won four times, begins on 9 April.

NE WS CLIP Golf’s future: ‘Time and format can be looked at relatively easily’
O
ne of golf’s biggest sponsors has warned the game is at a crossroads and not keeping up with changes in society.
The sport returns to the Olympics next year and Giles Morgan, the head of sponsorship for HSBC, believes this provides an opportunity that cannot be squandered. Morgan’s company spends millions of pounds on golf, backing several tournaments. All of HSBC’s golf contracts are up for renewal in 2015 and Morgan is concerned that the game is not moving with the times. “It’s a crossroads moment,” Morgan told BBC Sport. “I think that we will look back over this period and see where golf has gone. “There are lots of positives about golf but the world, particularly with digital communications and people’s time, has changed in the last 15 years beyond anybody’s wildest dreams. “I’m not sure that golf has kept up with that change. “I don’t think the sports in trouble but I do think that those who are in charge of the game need to be brave,” Morgan added. “They need to take some risks.

British Open host Royal St. George’s to allow female members. members took part in a ballot, and 90 percent voted in favor of women being eligible for membership. “It is extremely good news going forward,” Tim Checketts, club secretary of Royal St. George’s, told The Associated Press. The rule change will take immediate effect.

ne of the three clubs used for the British Open with a male-only membership policy has voted to allow female members for the first time.
Royal St. George’s, which last hosted golf’s oldest major in 2011, said more than 81 percent of the club’s full

Troon hosts the Open next year, and has already said the club was reviewing its membership policy. Last month, seven women accepted invitations to become honorary members of The Royal & Ancient Golf Club, whose clubhouse overlooks the Old Course at St. Andrews and is among the most famous buildings in golf.

A feeling of Euphoria!

his unique and demanding golf course bears the signature of the world`s former number one lady golfer Annika Sorenstam. According to Annika “I designed the course the way I play the game where you have to think about every shot.” The course will favour the strategic player rather than the big hitters”. The detailed design work was undertaken by European Golf Design Company a London based joint venture company between the European P.G.A Tour and International Management Group. This is the first design by EGD in South Africa and Annika`s second signature golf course after Mission Hills in China. Each of the 18 holes has four tee boxes of equal size suitably elevated to provide the player with a good view of the hole in play and with vistas over the estate and surrounding bushveld plains. This modern golf course is long measuring 7,055 meters off the white tees; 6,540 meters off the blue tees; 5,960 meters off the green tees and 5,145 meters off the front red tees. Each hole is unique in its own right with several

holes crossing a natural water ravine which runs through the property. They have a magnificent club house which is strategically situated at the base of the mountain overlooking the entire golf course and disappearing landscape. The Club house style is in keeping with the rest of the estate, with sandstone used from the nearby quarry blended with natural earthly tones and colours. The Club House has three levels, with the first floor housing the pro shop, change rooms and halfway house. The second floor comprises of the 2 conference rooms, Marnellas restaurant as well as the bar and bar lounge. These all lead onto balconies with magnificent views over the golf course. The third floor is where the Executive Office is situated. Most distinctive about the club house is the cableway, which links the club house to a Sundowner Restaurant at the top of the mountain. This is believed to be the only such facility in the world. Guests and fourballs can enjoy cocktails while enjoying the wonder of a beautiful bush sunset.

Nicklaus creates own ice cream line.

ack Nicklaus is now devoting time to the one glaring weakness in his incomparable career -- ice cream.
The Schwan Food Company in Minnesota is teaming up with the 18-time major champion to create Jack Nicklaus premium ice cream. It will be sold by the pint and available in grocery stores in select markets. The ice cream will be offered in seven flavors. Nicklaus says it’s no secret that he loves ice cream and he loves this project. He says he’s never had so much fun in research and development. Schwan is donating to the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation. Once the ice cream launch is over, Schwan says it will donate a percentage of the proceeds to the foundation and another children’s health care charity.

The Global Game Cast your eye over a typical golf course in 2020 and one thing which will be different is the demographic of the players. their twenties: Charl Schwartzel, Keegan Bradley, and Rory McIlroy, a sign that the professional game is increasingly dominated by young players. And future winners could be younger than this—and most probably will come from Asia. Surging interest from potential competitors made the 2012 edition of Europe’s leading junior tournament—the US Kids Golf European Championship— the biggest yet, with 550 competitors from more than 50 countries. In the United States, The First Tee national programme, designed to introduce younger players to golf, is exposing around 1.6 million children to the game through elementary school gym classes. In the UK, the Golf Foundation’s national development programme, HSBC Golf Roots, promotes the sport in schools, helps youngsters into clubs, and uses golf to promote important life skills such as honesty and respect. The Golf Foundation - a registered charity - aims to make it possible for young people to access the sport regardless of their circumstances. The HSBC Golf Roots programme is on target to reach 1 million children per year.
Instead of today’s older males, the future will look different, with a new wave of youngsters—across many geographies—sweeping into the game and reinventing its appeal and ambition. In 2011, three of golf’s Major tournaments were won by men in

Academies for young golfers to nurture talented youngsters—from as young as five—are growing in popularity. A report by the state-run Xinhua news agency published in May 2012 identified a school in southern China’s Zhuahi city in Guangdong province that offers free golf training to kindergartners. At the other end of China’s income spectrum, some parents are now prepared to spend up to 300,000 yuan ($43,940) on lessons for their children. The China Junior Golf Open Tournament held in Chengdu, capital of China’s southwestern Sichuan province, and sponsored by HSBC, continues to grow in popularity, along with other junior golf events. In India, too, young golfers are taking up the game as the number of coaches increases, while in Singapore a new subsidised junior golf initiative plans to turn golf into ‘a sport for all.’ There is no doubt that the future of the global game will increasingly be shaped by these highly ambitious and talented youngsters. The South Korean golfer Y.E. Yang put it this way after his ground-breaking USPGA victory in 2009: he hoped that “all young golfers, Korean and Asian, would build their dreams and expand their horizons.”

He played on the PGA Tour, the Nationwide Tour and the Champions Tour. • His nickname is “volcano” due to his on course eruptions. • He won 6 PGA Tour events. • His best finish in a Major is T-3 at both the 1988 U.S. Open and the 1991 Masters. • His career was riddled by injuries. At the height of his career, playing some of the best golf on the PGA Tour, he was in a three vehicle pile-up at the 1991 Ryder Cup and mainly cheered his teammates on from the sidelines. In 1996, he was in a near fatal car accident, where he shattered his wrist. • He made his Champions Tour debut on May 26, 2011, his 50th birthday, in the senior PGA Championship. Answer on page 88

Q&A with Charl Blaauw, golf course superintendent St Francis Links. Q - As the Golf Course Superintendent at St Francis Links, what would you say are the biggest challenges you face in your role?
Q - With St Francis Links being one of South Africa’s top golf courses, how do you maintain such high performance from your staff?
A - The biggest challenge is to provide a golf course that is presentable on a daily basis, and keeping it presentable 365 days a year with ever changing weather conditions. Also the fact that we have to maintain a golf course with a much smaller budget than we had years ago and keeping the standards as high as they were then. I can however say with a lot of confidence that it has never looked better, and this is all due to a great team that I work with on a daily basis.
A – We have a small but very efficient team working at the Links, every person has a role to play in the success of this estate and it is because of this tightly nit group that we can go through any tournament or club event with a smile, because I think everyone can see the bigger picture at the end of the day.
Q - Do you have any visiting problem animals like monkeys or moles or any other for that matter? How do you work alongside these to maintain the natural balance? A – We do have monkeys and moles, but not so many to call them a problem, in fact we have many other animals like Bushbuck, Grysbok, Duiker, Otter, Caracal, Water Mongoose, Bush pig and more. All of these animals co-exist with one another on the estate and seeing that we have an estate as big as 341 Hectares with plenty of natural fynbos areas, we seem to have no issues with them causing damage on the course itself.

Q - How are you coping with the economic climate as it is? A- We change as the economy changes! When the economy is bad, it seems to bring out the best in people, I know this sounds strange, but it makes you think outside the box to get feet through the estate and it also ensures that you make up new procedures in the way you maintain the course. As soon as one accepts that you have to work with what you have, this is when the wheels start rolling and a slow consistent rhythm is created that eventually turns into a monster truck that can’t be stopped. This does mean that you will have to make peace with letting go of some of the areas in your budget, but rather make another area extra special in the place of what you can’t have anymore. We had to cut back on the areas we fertilize on the course, but now we can fo-

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - G R E E N K E E P I N G cus on the smaller detail that makes a round of golf memorable, and at the end of the day every round just needs a surface to play from, whether it is a dry hard surface on one course or a lush green surface on another! This is what makes the game of golf a game of legends, every course provides a challenge in its own special and different way. Q - Hand cutting greens – does the use of a hand mower and the time it takes to cut the greens outweigh the use of ride-on mowers and the resulting compaction? A- Walkbehind mowing is and will stay one of the best ways to mow a green. Yes it does help keeping compaction down to a minimum and definitely gives a more superior cut than any other machine out there at the moment, if maintained correctly! Pros - - - - - Cons - -

Q - Why do some courses insist on doing rounded corners on tees as opposed to square corners? A- Rounded and square tees are mostly because of esthetics on any course. Round tees do make the maintenance process quicker and easier without worrying about getting the perfect straight line as with a square tee complex.

At St Francis Links we want to make every round a memorable one for the average golfer to enjoy, with the emphases on “ENJOY”. We have an intermediate cut of 20mm and a rough cut of 36mm, this seems to keep a round moving smoothly without many delays. The more height cuts you have on the course, the more maintenance you will create for yourself and the more machines you will need to keep it like that. We keep our intermediate cut to one mower width and our rough cut we take as far out as it takes to make every golfer a happy golfer when leaving St Francis Links. Q - When greenkeepers top dress the greens why don’t they also treat the fringes and aprons to stop the bulging and uneven transition from putting surface to fringe? A- Believe it or not, sand is one of the biggest budget items on some courses and not many courses can treat their aprons and fringes the same way they treat their greens. There are other machinery to keep thatch down around the greens and this is what most courses use to keep these areas looking good. Q - How often do you topdress your greens? A- We only topdress (A heavy application of sand) when we Hollowtine our greens, we do however dust (A very fine application of sand that does not affect ball roll) on a weekly basis. Q - Its hollowtining time for a lot of the courses around SA. What is the main reason for hollowtining ? A- The main reasons are: 1. It relieves compaction on the playing surface. 2. It allows for better air movement through the soil. 3. It allows for better drainage.
Q - Why do different courses have varying grades of rough length, how many grades of rough should there be and how wide should these cuts ideally be?
4. It creates a new growing medium for the plant with the new sand being added. 5. It removes thatch on the playing surface.
A- Heights of cut in rough areas are not defined to a certain height. For Pro tournaments you clearly see on television that they try to make it as much

The emerging strength of young Asian players in the game mirrors the broader shift in participation and investment from West to East. There are still many areas in Europe where the popularity of golf is growing. In absolute terms, golf participation grew in Germany, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic between 2000 and 2010 by 74%, 146%, and 650% respectively. However, in other parts of Europe, and also in the United States, the impact of the financial crisis on consumer spending and confidence means that golf has suffered.
prestige. Chinese business people see golf as a way to bridge the gap between East and West when doing business deals. Golf’s inclusion in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will increase its appeal because of the high regard and interest which the Chinese have for the Olympics.
This is in sharp contrast to the boom in Asia, where the growing middle class is taking to golf in increasing numbers, as a leisure pursuit and as a sign of status. As China and India get richer, this growth seems certain to increase. Between 2010 and 2020, Asia is expected to double its share of global middle class consumption to 42%. By 2015, 98 million Chinese households are expected to be middle-class, compared with 52 million in 2010. India’s middle class is estimated to grow from 32 million households in 2010 to more than 50 million by 2015. With increasing incomes and the more widespread acquisition of luxury brands comes the drive to set oneself apart from others—making leisure experiences such as international travel and sporting expertise highly sought after as status symbols. In China, the status of golf has risen dramatically. It was banned by the Communist Party until 1984; since then it has grown rapidly. Among the country’s new economic elites, it has both novelty and

Investment is following participation, and growth is happening in the lower tier cities, many of them provincial capitals with lower income levels than Beijing and Shanghai, as well as large urban centres. Despite a ban on the development of new golf courses imposed by the government in 2004, the number of golf courses in China has more than tripled since then, from 170 in 2004 to over 600 in 2011. More golf courses are being constructed in rural areas to try to boost local property and land prices. This is offering vital revenue for fiscallystretched local governments. In India, where golf has a much longer history, investment in property is driving investment in golf, as in other parts of the world. In rural areas, real estate is attracting people to live near courses—though many do not necessarily play the game themselves. Many of the golf academies driving youth involvement in the game are located in the so-called ‘Tier 2’ cities, purposefully to build awareness of the game and participation. Though the game remains aspirational and a sign of status, the availability of public golf courses and subsidised green rates are increasing the accessibility of the game in India. As happened in cricket, it seems only a matter of time before the centre of gravity in the game

moves to Asia. Just as the popularity of cricket in India means that the sub-continent has become the economic and political centre of the sport, so - although it may take decades - we expect to see the centre of the professional golf game move towards Asia, with bigger purses and sponsorship opportunities attracting the best players as the game grows in significance there.

Areas of the golf course will increasingly be designed for juniors to help them improve their games. For example, practice areas could be modified to provide younger players with short par 3 holes to play, which is already happening in places such as India where limits on land availability restrict the development of course facilities. And more young players creates new expectations about facilities. Younger players already routinely expect to film their action as part of their coaching process and play back the video to analyse it. As a result, we expect to see clubhouses by 2020 with video upload and computer analysis facilities as part of their proposition. More women players will also change expectations about the design of golf facilities, from ambience, to catering, to facilities for the rest of the family, which could include crèches or childcare. It means facilities for women players will improve—with, as has been suggested, even a certification scheme to validate this. The lifestyle of golfers is changing—and golf clubs will have to respond by thinking differently about the facilities they offer to their members and players.

Maybe not that funny, but that interesting.
Everything you ever wanted to know about dimples Consider the dimple. What are those cute little indentations all over the surface of a golf ball there for? Are they just decoration? Wouldn’t putting be more precise if the ball’s surface was completely smooth? The fact is that a perfectly smooth golf ball with no dimples would travel about 130 yards when hit with a driver by a good player. On the other hand, a ball with well-designed dimples, struck the same way, will travel about 290 yards. Why the difference? Aerodynamics. The smooth ball flies like a bullet, and has no “lift.” The dimpled ball, because it is spinning, climbs up into the sky, taking off like an airplane. Also, the dimples create a turbulent layer around the surface of the ball, which actually makes it slide through the air more easily -- the dimples reduce the drag. The ball must, however, spin for the lift force to be created, and unfortunately a spinning ball has more drag than a nonspinning ball. But this is the trade off. It is the combination of the lift and drag properties of the ball, as well as its speed, launch angle and spin rate, which will dictate the flight path or trajectory of the ball, and thus the distance it will go.
and dimples are not a threat to national security, so most of what’s known about effective dimple design has been arrived at through experimentation, trial and error and some science on the part of manufacturers. Dimple design has changed significantly over time, from random patterns, to formal rows, to interstitial designs. The depth, shape and number have all been varied and tested. With regard to the number of dimples, manufacturers have done it all. Obviously, as you increase the number of dimples, the smaller they must be to fit on the ball. Eventually, as the number increases, the dimples get smaller and the ball becomes almost smooth--and will perform likewise. So a compromise is the answer. It has generally been found that less than about 300 dimples is too few, and more than about 500 is too many. Most balls on the market today have thus converged to the middle ground with between 350 and 450 dimples (although one company produced a ball with 812, which didn’t set the world on fire). So next time there’s a wait on the tee, check out the dimples (the ones on the golf ball.) If it’s a really long wait, you could even count ’em.
What are the USGA’s rules on dimple design? There aren’t any. There are restrictions on the weight, size and initial velocity of a ball, but when it comes to dimples, anything goes. Are there good dimples and bad dimples? Yes there are. The size, shape, depth, number, distribution pattern and overall surface coverage of the dimples all influence the ball’s aerodynamic lift and drag properties. Unfortunately, analysis of air flow over a golf ball’s dimples is not a huge priority for NASA,
