WINNING LETTER Dear Neville When it comes to the matter of which format I prefer to receive SA Golf Trader, the answer is obvious: good old-fashioned print is the runaway winner. It’s not even close. The digital world is perhaps not all it’s cracked up to be – at least not for us golfers who enjoy reading about golf. Going online to download SAGT to a tablet, a mobile or a laptop seems to offer so many benefits – clarity of images, ease of navigation, direct links to websites, video content and so on. Yet picking up the latest edition of SAGT at my local club and reading it at the halfway house, then taking it home to continue reading it and have my wife and kids read it is just so much better. Congratulations to you guys for continually bringing out an excellent magazine in what must be a challenging environment, I realise that it must be extremely expensive to produce a high quality publication such as SAGT. However I would implore advertisers to continue supporting the likes of SAGT (in printed format) as many, many people

of all ages would rather have the physical product than a non-tangible offering on a tablet. Regards Howard Richards
Dear Howard Thank you so much for your kind and thought provoking letter. Yes, the print industry is in unchartered waters at the moment however I think that the way forward will include both print and electronic formats as they both have unique qualities. The challenge lies in the fact that there is so much hype surrounding the electronic format that it can be difficult to convince advertisers that there is still a very large market for print and in my opinion this market should increase in years to come as people hanker for some of life’s simple pleasures such as quietly sitting at the halfway house thumbing a brand new copy of your favourite magazine (which ever one that may be). PGA OF SA LEADS FIRST
AFRICA GOLF COACHING CONFERENCE
T
he PGA of South Africa recently hosted the inaugural Africa Golf Coaching Conference as part of its own vision and a partnership with the Royal and Ancient (R&A) to help grow the game on the continent. The conference took place at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club and included 12 delegates from countries in Sub-Saharan Africa who were sponsored by the R&A to attend. Andrew Gunn, the Education and Training Manager for the PGA of South Africa, said the conference was a resounding success and strengthened the bonds within Africa golf. “I think the visiting African delegates took home some valuable knowledge, but also a sense of being part of a larger PGA family in Africa that shares a common vision. I believe that’s what we all want to do in terms of taking African golf to the next level,” said Gunn. Springbok rowing coach Roger Barrow opened the
conference with a presentation on coaching dedication, motivation and attention to detail. Tony Bennett, Managing Director of Education and Training for the PGAs of Europe, delivered a presentation on worldwide trends in golf, golf coach education in Europe, the European coaching framework and how the golf coach should position himself/herself in the changing environment of the game at present. “Our high standard of education and the importance we place on this, which has made the organisation a leader in golf education on the continent,” said Gunn. “The quality of our local expertise was plain to see in the presentation by an experienced coach such as Jamie Gough on coaching the swing, coaching children, health and lifestyle for golf, golf biomechanics, custom fitting and much more.” Steve Smith, the Director of the World of Golf in Botswana, said the conference was a valuable resource for African countries to draw from. “There was such a positive sharing of knowledge. For us in Botswana, it’s great to know that we have the PGA of South Africa and such a collective of experience and knowledge that we can draw on.” The PGA of South Africa will also be presenting a Level 1 course to 22 golf coaches in Kenya at the end of June. Irishman Lowry finished in a tie for ninth, five places behind South African Grace, who went into the final day in a tie for the lead but finished the tournament fourth after closing with a one-over 71. They have all earned more non-member FedEx Cup points than the total of the player who finished 150th on the list in 2014. England’s Danny Willett and up and coming United States player Patrick Rodgers also secured invites in similar fashion earlier in the season.

id you guys see how the US Open ended for Dustin Johnston vs Jordan Speith! Who’s known for their driving & who knows how to make clutch putts under pressure? Dustin had so many chances out there & probably should have run away with the title but WOW did he hit some bazookas out there - a 6-iron into the par 5 final hole! The rest was history after that... Jordan on the other hand plugged away more tactically, positioning himself around the course, keeping a level head & stuck to his solid routines in holing out for victory. In the end the man with the golden touch won but a huge heads up to our SA boys who did us so proud at the event, especially ‘Oosty’ who bounced back from a 77 start to finish T2nd with three superb sub 70’s. ‘Oosties’ calm approach to the conditions, his sound tactical play & holing out propelled him into contention, a sure contender for The Open in July! Gracie also needs mention, with his wonderful tenacity & incredible drive (one of which proved his undoing) he was for all my money the Champion of the week but for two tactical errors on the 16th & 18th holes. He’ll be a sure contender at st Andrews as will the above mentioned, worth a bet, with the except of Bobby who will be there in spirit ;-)

tuition & instruction Can you balance a Five Rand coin on a carpet or an even, smooth floor (steady hands please) & strike it so pure that it rolls down your line & strikes your target? Try it from about one meter away from your target, use your Srixon Z-Star as your target & if your path is true, face angle square & you find the sweet spot, then you will find your magical touch again! You can also draw a nice strong, straight line on the top of your ball & when you strike your ball pure along the line it should roll over itself nicely with no wobble. Have some fun & be creative with your training :-)
Add some value to the face of your putter! If you want to define or isolate your sweet spot in training, ‘Prestick’ a coin of similar weight & size either side of the sweet spot. Give them enough space so that you can find the sweet spot & make sure the base of the coins don’t protrude past the leading edge of your putter or else they’ll come flying off with some potential ground contact! If you strike one of the edges of the coins, the ball will go flying off on a tangent & it won’t be able to find its home ;-) The bigger the coin the heavier it’ll make your putter, so find a size & weight that suits your pocket ;-) No pun intended!
When to connect & when not to!
The towel drill, connecting both arms towards your body is one of my favourite exercises for consistency & precision improvement for holing out from short range, four meters & in. By softening both elbows in towards your side you get less moving parts through impact; less hand wobble & better path arc if your shoulder stability is good, square through impact. This technique also gets you to use the bigger muscles more in your stroke which really helps you under pressure, especially if you are prone to adrenalin surges followed by mass Tourette Syndrome! ;-) The only time you can really free or loosen up your stroke physically is outside of the precision zone, beyond four meters. Here you can disconnect your arms from your body, elbows in opposed directions with out any abnormal tension & this with enable you to make bigger pendulums without the need to feel like you’re hitting the ball to get the distance required. It almost feels like you’re rocking a baby & it’s more of an arms motion then a body motion. Connecting your arms to your body & making big pendulums compromises your strike as this creates a lot more head pivot in your stroke vs disconnection which helps keep your head stable, watching the strike better & improving your distance control.

If you can make a stroke keeping your coin on top of the putter, depending on the type of putter you use, like on the flange of your cavity or on top of a mallet, then you must be making quite the rhythmical stroke :-) If you pluck your putter away the coin will slide off over the face & if you’re quick in transition then it’ll slide off the back. Check out your coordination with this one? ;-)

Mpumalanga & Free State share SA Country Districts joy It is pretty tough to enjoy a bye in the final round with a prestigious title on the line, especially if you are heading up the A-Section log.

owever, the long wait was worth the while for Mpumalanga, who clinched the SA Country Districts title, while Free State roared to victory in the B-Section promotion battle at ERPM GC at the end of May. Mpumalanga finished the week-long battle at the top of the summit with six points after Kevin Smith, Andre van Heerden, Brian Naidoo, Gary Daniel, Chris Zietsman, Quintin Wilsnach, Jaun van Greunen and Lourens Volschenk successfully combined for victories against defending champions Boland, North West and Border. The Free State side won two games in the Foursomes and halved another to take the early lead. Jacques Schutte defeated Walter Malevu 4 & 3, while Almero Theron and Bartjie de Klerk both triumphed 2-up. The heroes of the day was Pieter Swartz and Henning de Jager, who squared their games to secure the crucial point for Free State and promotion to the A-Section in 2016.

Samu seals stunning SA Girls victory
Samu and Du Toit carded rounds of 75 and 73 to start the final round in a tie for the lead. After an enthralling battle of wits, the pair was still deadlocked at eight-over-par 224 with a pair of 76s. Du Toit took the early lead when Samu failed to up-anddown at the opening hole, but lead changed hands when Du Toit bogeyed six and Samu birdied the par-three seventh. The duo matched each other shot for shot over the next four holes with bogeys at 10 and 11, birdies at 12, pars at 13 and bogeys at 14. Samu lost the lead with a failed up-and-down attempt at 15, but Du Toit handed it back with a bogey at 16. Both players parred 17 before the Waterkloof junior spoiled Samu’s party, holing a six-footer for birdie at the closing hole to force the championship into overtime. “We both hit good tee shots at the par-five 17th,” Samu said. “I reached the green in two and made a two-putt birdie, but Danielle was in the greenside bunker after her second. She played a brilliant trap shot and boxed her birdie putt to extend the play-off. “At 18, I hit my tee shot right and finished in the trees. I managed a kind of lob-shot to get on the green and had a six foot putt for par. Danielle hit her tee shot down the fairway and her second to three feet, but her birdie putt lipped out and we had to go back to 17.” With the adrenaline, Samu hit a monster drive 290 meters down the 17th fairway.

vanna Samu sealed an emotional Nomads SA Girls Championship victory at the third hole of a thrilling play-off at Orkney GC and the tears streaming down her face told the story of the pressure, the battle and the glory to own one of junior golf’s most prestigious titles. It was the second successive year that the country’s top ranked amateur had to fight for victory in extra time. The 17-year-old Ruimsig golfer came up short against Cara Gorlei in 2014 and this time, she was pushed to the limit by promising Gauteng North golfer, Danielle du Toit. “It wasn’t who would win, but who would make the first mistake,” said an emotional Samu. “Danielle played brilliant golf and matched me shot for shot for three rounds and this final round was a ding-dong battle over 21 holes. I have never felt so drained, so exhausted and so exhilarated at the same time. “I was gutted when I lost last year, so I am ecstatic that I pulled it through this time. This was one title I really, really wanted to win, but this was undoubtedly the hardest victory of my career. “I have to thank my coach Graeme Francis for keeping me positive and giving me a strong mental framework. I needed everything I had out there. And thank you to my family and friends, for their incredible support – this one is for all of you.”

Danielle hit a great tee shot, but she hooked her second into greenside bunker and her bunker finished 20 feet past the pin. After she missed the par putt, I cleaned up for victory. “The relief was immense. It feels incredibly good to finally put this one to bed. Fourteen-year-old Woo-Ju Son closed with a 74 to finish on 225, while fellow Gauteng golfers Kaleigh Telfer and Kajal Mistry shared fourth on 227 after posting a pair of 77s.

Amateur golf in South Africa set to break new ground. The South African Golf Association (SAGA) and Womens Golf South Africa (WGSA) are delighted to announce the launch of Golf RSA and the appointment of current South African Golf Development Board CEO, Grant Hepburn, at its helm.
T
he country’s top ranked mid-amateur was in imperious form over four days at Victoria CC in KwaZulu-Natal, having opened with a five-under-par 66 en route to an impressive seven-under-par 277 total and a four stroke victory over fellow Western Province player Elton James. “As the governing bodies of amateur golf in the Republic of South Africa, SAGA and WGSA have agreed to unify and reorganise their operations under one umbrella,” explained SAGA president Gerhard Conradie. “We believe the amalgamation under Golf RSA is in the best interest of furthering the sport and to ensure its future within the socio-economic, legal and political environments of this country. “The respective national executive committees will continue to set the strategy and policies and the existent democratic structures of both organizations will remain intact, however Golf RSA will implement and perform the combined operations.” Conradie confirmed that the South African Disabled Golf Association (SADGA), which is affiliated to SAGA, will join the unified operations. “Golf RSA will be governed by a board of directors comprising senior representatives of SAGA, WGSA and SADGA, as well as several high profile, independent non-executive golf personalities who shall provide corporate governance and proper oversight of the operation of the not-for-profit company,” Conradie said. “We are excited to welcome Grant in the role of CEO at Golf RSA. We believe his passion, energy, determination and personality is perfectly suited to drive the unification process.”

WGSA president Karen Olivant also welcomed the launch of Golf RSA as a positive step that will change the face of amateur golf in South Africa. Sunshine Tour chairman Johann Rupert applauded the launch of Golf SA and Hepburn’s appointment. “The formation of Golf RSA is a remarkable achievement - congratulations to all involved,” Rupert said. “Golf RSA will provide a healthy platform from which to move golf forward throughout South Africa. “Having known Grant for nearly twenty years since we first met at 1995 Open Championship at St Andrews, I was very pleased that SAGA approached him to be the first CEO. Grant has done a remarkable job as the leader of the SAGDB, and we wish him all the best. “Nowadays we all read about one scandal after another involving the various administrators of nearly every sporting code. He has a proven track record in both amateur and professional golf circles, has coached champions on the PGA Tour, European Tour, Asian Tour and the Sunshine Tour, and works with many of the country’s top amateurs. For many years, the renowned PGA professional has been a monthly contributor of instruction tips to the Compleat Golfer Magazine and frequently lectures in Long Term Athlete Development and Advanced Golf Coaching. He was also instrumental in helping the PGA formulate the Grow Golf Coaches Program that trains dozens of school teachers and development coaches around the country to be proficient in the basics of golf coaching. In 1999, Hepburn joined the South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) as its national coaching consultant and has trained more than 80 coaches during his tenure. He has excelled in his capacity as the CEO since 2013, taking the organisation from a development initiative with projects in seven golf unions to nation-wide pro-

gram that is now active in all 14 golf unions around South Africa. Following a R10-million donation from businessman Johann Rupert to finance a national squad programme earlier this year, Hepburn will also be highly instrumental in the selection, development and management of South African National Squad. “I am extremely honoured to have been considered for the position of CEO for Golf RSA,” Hepburn said. “SAGA and WGSA have a long standing tradition of being loyal servants and governing bodies of South African golf. There are thousands of people over the years who have given their time and expertise voluntarily and that have played a massive role in governing the game and preserving the values that are inherent in golf. “I must acknowledge the hard work that the president Gerhard Conradie and office bearers Geoff Taylor and Naadir Agherdien have put in behind the scenes to bring Golf RSA to fruition. “I aim to continue their good work and will strive to add value through the new structures of Golf RSA. National breakthrough for Saulez in St Francis Bay

att Saulez was convinced that he blew his chances in the Nomads Coastal National of Order after a bit of bushwhacking on the back nine at St Francis Links, but the KwaZulu-Natal player hung tough and produced the goods to seal a maiden victory on the South African Golf Association’s national junior circuit last month. Tied for the lead heading down the 18th hole, Saulez boxed a decisive a four-footer for birdie to sign for a one-under-par 71 and a one stroke victory on oneover-par 145 over reigning Nomads SA Boys U-19 Stroke Play champion Dylan Naidoo. Saulez learned that Naidoo had set the clubhouse target at 146 when he reached the 18th tee. “I knew I had to birdie the last hole to avoid a play-off,” Saulez said.

Phillip Swanepoel from Stellenbosch University claimed the Individual Competition in the 36-hole Stroke Play qualifier at the USSA Championship last month. Swanepoel’s well-timed five-under-par 67 at Port Shepstone GC carried him to the top of the standings and also helped Maties 1 to a tie for fifth in the final Teams Standings. Christiaan Rossouw (78) and Riaan Schmulian (80) added to the teams’ second round score of 225. The side tied with 443 North West University Pukke 1 (221-222), comfortably securing a spot in the top eight teams that will contest the A-Division of the Inter-Institutional Match Play Championship.

ue the Grand Slam chatter, break out the record books and let the Tiger Woods comparisons commence.
Jordan Spieth — already with a Masters green jacket in his closet — will go to the British Open at St. Andrews in July seeking his third consecutive major championship victory of 2015. After a week’s worth focus at this U.S. Open centered on controversial 8-year-old public golf course, Chambers Bay, its bumpy greens and the way the USGA been set it up, finally we have a winner. The 21-year-old Texan, whose mature, humble demeanor equals his extraordinary talent and poise under pressure, became the first player since Woods in 2002 to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year. With the victory, Spieth became the youngest player to win two career majors since Gene Sarazen in 1922. He became the youngest player to win a U.S. Open since Bobby Jones in 1923. And he became only the sixth player in history to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year.

In a dizzying final hour, there were three pressure-point moments of truth that shaped the tournament. The final, decisive, moment came with Dustin Johnson three-putting from 12 feet on the 72nd hole to hand the trophy to Spieth, who one hole earlier appeared to have thrown the tournament away with a three-putt double bogey on 17 that brought Johnson, among others, back into the mix. Johnson — who is making a dubious career out of leaking away major championships in final rounds — stood over a 12-foot eagle putt on 18 to finally capture his first career major. He slid the eagle try 4 feet past and then stared down the comebacker that would at least have forced an 18-hole Monday playoff with Spieth. He missed. “I’m in shock,’’ Spieth said as Johnson, looking utterly dazed, walked off the 18th green carrying his new-born child in an effort to soothe the pain. “Wow. That’s … I watched with Micheal my caddie, and I just wanted a fighting chance in the play-off on Monday. I feel bad for Dustin. I had that feeling on 17.’’

The par-3 17th hole is where Spieth showed a rare crack in his bullet-proof poise. Carrying a threeshot lead with two holes to play, he missed the green, chipped onto the green and three-putted for double, the miss for bogey about the same distance Johnson would miss from on 18. Moments earlier, Louis Oosthuizen — the hottest player in the tournament the last three days, rallying from being 9-over par through his first 20 holes — birdied 18 to get to 4-under par. That completed a remarkable round of 67 that included a 29 on the back nine with birdies on six of his last seven holes. That left Spieth tied with Oosthuizen at 4-under and needing a birdie on the par-5 18th to win. Two days earlier, with No. 18 being played as a par-4 in the second round, Spieth called it “the dumbest hole I’ve ever played,’’ adding, “I think 18 as a par-4 doesn’t make much sense.’’
Earlier, it appeared the fate of the tournament had turned on No. 16, a short, drivable par-4 that runs along the Puget Sound. Spieth and Grace were tied for the lead at 5-under with three holes to play, Grace blew his tee shot so far right of the fairway it bounced along a road and under a fence. It was a cruel moment for the 27-yearold South African who was seeking his first major championship victory. With Grace in trouble, about to double bogey 16, Spieth made a 27-foot curling birdie putt on the 16th green, turned to his right calmly and screamed at the top of his lungs. He felt the tournament was his. But, as it would turn out, not so fast. The birdie brought Spieth to 6-under for the championship with a three-shot lead over Grace, Johnson, Oosthuizen and Adam Scott.
The USGA, which had planned to play 18 as a par-4 in the final round, surprised many and set it up as a par-5, insisting that the decision had nothing to do with Spieth’s gripes and everything to do with the direction of the wind.
But in that stunning few moments, Spieth lost his composure and double bogeyed the 17th hole, Oosthuizen birdied 18 and Johnson was suddenly back in contention.
Spieth hit his drive into the fairway and then piped his approach shot to within 15 feet of the flag for an eagle putt.
So of course it would come to the 18th, a controversial sidebar to what had been a controversial golf course all week.
One hole behind Spieth, was Johnson birdieing the 17th to tie for the lead at 4-under. Johnson, who began the day tied for the led with Spieth, Jason Day and Branden Grace, then hammered his tee shot to the middle of the fairway and watched as Spieth two-putted for birdie to get to 5-under.
Now Spieth will go to Scotland to try to write some more history in the books.
That left Johnson, who an hour earlier had been left for dead, struggling mightily with his putter, needing birdie to force the 18-hole Monday playoff.
“You can’t win them all unless you win the first two. We’re going to St. Andrews looking to get that Claret Jug and I believe we’ll be able to get it done.’’

Sean Pappas: 1966-2015
O
n a weekend when University of Arkansas graduate David Lingmerth won his first PGA Tour title, the Razorbacks lost another of their alumni with the death of five-time Sunshine Tour winner Sean Pappas. Pappas, who once shot 59-61-64-68 in a mini-tour event in the United States to set a world record score of 252 for 72 holes, died of a heart attack at the age of 49. He is survived by his wife Sue, their seven-year-old daughter and a 20-year-old son from a previous marriage. Born on February 19, 1966, he was the second-oldest of four brothers. The oldest, Craigen, is PGA Head Golf Professional at Heritage GC in Columbus, Ohio, while Deane was born in 1967 and Brenden in 1970. Deane and Brenden both played in South Africa, but they live in Florida in the US. Both have won on the Nationwide Tour (now the Web.com Tour) and played on the PGA Tour. Deane is the most recent winner from the family on the Sunshine Tour with his 2009 Dimension Data ProAm victory. Sean attended the University of Arkansas with his brothers in the early 1990s. He turned professional in 1990. He did not find much success in his early professional years and returned to South Africa to play on the Sunshine Tour.

The first of his five victories on the Sunshine Tour came in his rookie season, when he took the Hollard Royal Swazi Sun Open. He won the 1994 Highveld Classic, the 1996 Lombard Tyres Classic, the 1997 Kalahari Classic, and his final win came at the 2000 Bearing Man Highveld Classic. He has played over 230 events in South Africa and finished in the top 10 over 30 times, winning one of three of his play-offs. He had an albatross in December 1999 at the Vodacom Players Championship on the 11th hole at Royal Cape Golf Club during the third round. He was only the fifth player to achieve that in tournament play in South Africa. In 2010, Sean Pappas became the resident Club Professional at The Ranch Resort Executive Golf Course and Academy, south of Polokwane. Members and staff of the Sunshine Tour extend their condolences to family and friends.

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Mix the Parsley, Cream, Melted Butter & Lemon Juice. Spice the Angel Fish with some Fish Spice & Black Pepper and place in a greased, oven proof dish. Cover the fish completely with the Lemon-Cream-Butter Sauce. Can add some fresh Garlic to the Sauce. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 15 minutes or until done. I switched the grill on in the last 2 minutes. The fish dries out very easily so it is important to keep an eye on it whilst in the oven. It is ready when the fish is flaky and can easily be pulled apart with a fork. I tested it at 10 minutes where after I gave it another 3 minutes and 2 under the grill. Dress with Lemon Zest & Dill (Optional). Serve with fresh lemon and a side of salad.

erlede maand se artikel het ek met die volgende woorde afgesluit:
“Louis se beserings is iets van die verlede en hy is huidiglik nommer 24 op die wêreldranglys. Ek is van mening dat met sy huidige vorm hy weer binnekort in die top 10 gaan wees. Watch this space...” Ken ek my speler of ken ek my speler? Soos ek nou hier skryf is Louis nr 16 op die wêreldranglys na sy briljante tweede plek in die VSA Ope. Ek het ‘n goeie tyd opi sak gehad alhoewel die lastige nekbesering weer sy “nek” uitgesteek het. Gelukkig was dit nie te ernstig nie en het die behandeling die regte uitwerking gehad sodat Louis nou weer gesond en reg vir die res van die jaar is. Ek hoor baie stories oor Louis se beserings, fiksheid ens. Seker net omdat mense onkundig is oor wat presies ‘n internasionale gholfer weekliks moet doen. Hier is ‘n kort opsomming van ‘n week op toer. Sondag of Maandag is reisdag na die betrokke gholfbaan afhangende van hoe ver dit van Louis se huis in West Palm Beach, Florida geleë is of hoe belangrik die toernooi is bv. vir ‘n Major probeer hy Sondag al ‘n oefenrondte

speel om meer van die gholfbaan te sien. Dinsdag is dit balle slaan, setwerk en kaphoue vir ongeveer 2 ure, dan 18 putjies speel (met ‘n verskeidenheid houe op elke putjie) en dan weer 2 ure se oefen later die middag. Woensdag is dit weer 2 ure balle slaan en dan in die Pro-Am speel saam met amateurs en dan weer balle slaan vir ‘n uur of twee om te werk aan enige iets wat nog nie heeltemal reg voel nie. Donderdag begin die toernooi en dan is ons weer twee ure voor ons afslaantyd op die oefenbaan om behoorlik op te warm in alle aspekte van die spel. Dan 18 putjies toernooigholf, dan weer ‘n uur of

Ja, en dan was sommige skoonvelde en setperke ook onspeelbaar…….een speler het aan die pers gesê dat dit voel om soos op broccoli te set. Toe sê ‘n ander speler nee, broccoli is groen – eerder dan om soos op blomkool te set. Die gholfbaan het op die oog af baie moeilik en onspeelbaar gelyk, maar na ‘n hele paar oefenrondtes, goeie beplanning en die eerste paar toernooi rondtes het ek en Louis ‘n goeie idee gehad van hoe die baan gespeel behoort te word. Jy moes jou bofhou op die regte plekke plaas ten einde die beste lyn na die betrokke penplasing te hê. En partykeer moes jy 20 meter links of 20 regs van die pen mik om hellings te gebruik om naby aan die pen te kon kom. ‘n Verkeerde hou het ons partykeer van 5 meter van die pen af weggevoer na 50 of 60 meter van die pen af. Op die baan moes jou kop sterk wees of anders het jy baie moeilikheid gehad. Louis hou van sulke uitdagings en daarom speel hy gewoonlik baie goed op Links gholfbane waar jy ‘n groot verskeidenheid houe moet kan uitvoer.

Na so ‘n week op toer is jy as joggie, maar veral die spelers kwaai uitgeput. Maandag se reisdag is dan eintlik ook hul enigste rusdag voor die hele program hom herhaal. Glo my, die spelers wat op toer speel, is topfiks. Jy kan nie week in en week uit so ‘n pas handhaaf en so baie balle slaan en gholf speel indien jy nie topfiks is nie. Dalk nie Comrades hardloop fiks of Tour de France fietsryfiks nie, maar gholffiks en loopfiks, baie beslis!! Terug na die VSA Ope. Ek het ‘n videogreep aan vriende gestuur wat heeltemal viral gegaan het. Ek het dit geskiet toe ons die Sondag daar aangekom het en vir die eerste keer die gholfbaan gesien het. In die videogreep sê ek vir hulle dat nie een van my vriende beter as 120 op die gholfbaan sal kan speel nie. En ek bedoel dit!! As jy net effens gesukkel het met jou houe, het jy nommers gemaak soos baie spelers dan ook gedoen het. Een skewe hou kos jou sommer ‘n klomp houe want die kuile en sukkelveld was op party plekke net onspeelbaar. Soos ons ook gesien gebeur het met Brandon Grace op 16de en Jordan Spieth op 17de in die laaste rondte – en hulle was

Louis se 77 in die eerste rondte was ‘n verrassing want hy het die hele week die bal goed geslaan maar ongelukkig het ons laat die Donderdagmiddag afgeslaan en was die gholfbaan baie moeiliker as toe die spelers die oggend gespeel het. Die setperke was in die middae baie harder en meer ongelyk as in die oggende agv die verskillende soorte grasse wat op die setperke was. Die spoed van die verskillende setperke het ook kwaai verskil van mekaar wat dit nog moeiliker gemaak het. Vrydag en Saterdag speel Louis rondtes van 66 en is 5de geplaas vir die finale rondte. Ek weet dat ons ‘n kans het want Louis slaan die gholfbal suiwer en is baie positief. Ongelukkig het ons nie ‘n goeie begin nie en die eerste paar putjies wil dinge net nie werk nie. ‘n Effe swak hou rol sommer 60 meter van die setperk af en ons bevind ons 3 oor baan (2 oor vir die toernooi) na die eerste vier putjies. Nie die begin wat ons wou gehad het nie. Ek praat Louis die hele tyd moed in want ek weet hy is in vorm. Louis byt vas vir die volgende paar putjies en maak goeie syfers om dan 3 oor te wees vir die eerste 9. Op putjies 10, 11 en 12 wil die sette net nie val nie en rol rakelings oor die kante, maar op 12 maak ons ‘n voëltjie wat die begin is van iets ongeloofliks. Louis maak 5 voëltjies in ‘n ry, op die 17de mis hy weer net-net en nog ‘n voëltjie op die 18de teken hy sy telkaart met ‘n 29 op die tweede 9! Louis verbeter of ewenaar ook verskeie VSA Ope rekords en ek is seker al die doemprofete kyk lekker op hulle neuse. Ek hoor juis so ‘n skrywer het Louis gekritiseer in ‘n SA gholftydskrif dat hy nie genoeg omgee vir sy spel nie of nie passievol genoeg is nie. As oud-polisieman sou ek iets sterkers wou sê, maar kom ons volstaan maar by twak! Dalk moet hy net hierdie artikel bietjie te lese kry.

GOLF CLUBS MAKING A MEAL OF OUTSOURCED CATERING

Catering is one of the biggest challenges golf clubs face as they seek to achieve a consistent offering of quality that can match the standards of the course and the status of the club.
have executive chefs in them, which is critical in terms of the quality catering we offer. And it’s very much a two-way street in terms of the working relationship with the golf club. The club has input in terms of what they’d like to see on the menu.”
It’s a challenge that the PGA of South Africa has tackled by identifying a credible outsourcing solution through its partnership with the Wiesenhof/ Dulce franchise, and encouraging golf clubs to follow this model.
The success of this solution is evidenced by the fact that clubs such as Ebotse, Boschenmeer, Woodhill and Observatory have achieved growth of between 20% to 47% on the performance of their previous caterers.
There are currently seven golf clubs in South Africa that make use of Wiesenhof/Dulce for their catering, including Observatory Golf Club; Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club; The Els Club, Copperleaf; Woodhill Golf Estate; Ebotse Golf Estate; Boschenmeer Golf Estate and the Gilloolys Golf Village.
“Golf clubs are beginning to realise that they are losing money by trying to manage the catering themselves. If you are not one hundred per cent hands on with your catering, then you are losing out.”
And for Brigid Jaucot, the marketing manager for Wiesenhof/Dulce, the outsourcing solution makes perfect sense for these clubs. “Catering is not a golf club’s core business, so by outsourcing this it takes a lot of the hassle off of their shoulders.” But Jaucot takes this a step further by suggesting that simply outsourcing to a private company is also not the most effective solution. “By outsourcing to a franchise the golf club benefits from a better support network than a private company could offer. “For example, if there are any problems then as a franchise we are better placed to assist. When we open a new store at a golf club we spend two to three months with the new owner, assisting them with the set-up. And we visit them on a weekly basis. Our stores at some of the bigger golf clubs also

SA GOLF HAS A NEW “GRAND SLAM CHAMPION”
T
hanks to the PGA of South Africa, this country will have another “Grand Slam champion” when veteran rules official Theo Manyama attends the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin this month. The 72-year-old Manyama has risen from the streets of Soweto to become one of world golf’s most respected rules officials and a man known by the world’s leading professional golfers, from Tiger Woods to Ernie Els to Miguel Angel Jiminez. His record at the Majors puts him in an elite club that has seen him invited to officiate at 16 Masters, nine US Opens and 19 Open Championships. And all of these have been consecutive appearances. But despite several invites to officiate at golf’s fourth Major, the PGA Championship, Manyama has been unable to attend for a lack of financial support.

However this year, Manyama, who is also a Master Professional of the PGA of South Africa, will have his air ticket paid for by the PGA of SA. “I am so grateful because I have some wonderful memories of the Majors,” he said. “When Ernie Els won the 2012 Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes, I was with him on the 18th green. And people watching on TV said the commentators were saying, ‘That man next to Ernie is Theo Manyama, one of the best rules officials in golf’. That made me proud that I could also add to the glory of our country in that moment,” said Manyama. “I remember going up to Phil Mickelson once to give him a ruling, and again some of my friends watching on TV told me the commentators said, ‘Oh, here’s Theo Manyama. Phil is in good hands here’. It’s wonderful to be respected for your hard work.”

Amateur golfer, 59, shoots a 57 including three holes-in-one. “My years in the military have left me a little hard of hearing, so when one of the guys said they heard a clank, I thought, OK, I don’t believe that.” But his friend was not mistaken. The ‘clank’ was a hole-in-one. When 59-year-old American amateur golfer Patrick Wills struck his tee shot at the 187-yard par three 14th at Laurel Hill GC in Virginia, USA, he had already had a pretty remarkable day. The former marine, on his way to a round of 57 that would win him the Summer Solstice tournament, had already had holes-in-one at the par-four seventh and 10th when he hit his five-iron into the green at 14. “When we got to the green I looked down and I don’t even know what I felt - I was dumbfounded,” said Wills, from Woodbridge, Virginia, who was playing in a fourball with his sons Charlie, 29, and Christopher 27, and air force major Matthew Ghormley. “I don’t know if I broke out in joy such was the disbelief. It was unreal. I had never experienced anything like that before.” The odds of achieving two holes-in-one in a single round are approximately 67 million to one, and the odds on three are well into the billions. In fact Wills, who plays off a handicap of plus four and has won the tournament 20 times, statistically had more chance of winning the lottery - 14 million to one - than of achieving this feat. Here’s how the round - which also saw him achieve the feat of shooting a score lower than his age unfolded. After carding 68 in his first round, Wills started his second with four birdies and a bogey in his first six holes before he came to the 289-yard par-four seventh...

As the foursome approached the green, Wills could not see his ball so he was headed towards the back when a voice said: “What ball are you playing?” “I thought you have to be kidding me,” he said. “Why are you asking me this? But I said I was playing a Callaway and they said ‘Well, there is a

South African Musician 1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend? I was born in Discovery Hospital in Roodepoort. I went to Louter Kabouter Crèche in kempton park; then grade 1 at Kempton Primary, then Bushlands on the Bluff in Durban (head prefect) Grosvernor Boys High Std 6-8 then Rand Park High for some of 8,9 and matric (not head boy. Definitely not). 2. Did you sing at school, for the choir or anything like that? I joined the choir at the end of Std 9. 3. When did you first start playing guitar and are you proficient with any other musical instrument’s? Only after Matric. Studied drums the year after, then guitar after that. 4. What music did you listen to as a youngster? Nat King Cole, Elvis, Guns n Roses. 5. What sports did you do when you were at school? Cricket. 6. Just Jinjer, what a great band! How did that come about and are you guys still together? We are still together in a BIG way. New album is sounding better than anything we’ve ever done and is definitely going to cause quite a stir. 7. What is the best concert that you have ever done and
who are some of the big names in the industry that you have shared the stage with? Rocking the Daisies when we first got back from LA was a really special moment. U2, The Strokes, Counting Crows, Maroon 5, Stevie Wonder, Queen and Elvis Costello. 8. What music interests you today? All sorts. Black Keys, Arcade Fire, Interpol, Radiohead but in my car I only listen to Classics. Absolutely love classical music. 9. What are your feelings with regards to all the talent shows that are on TV, Idols, America’s got Talent, The Voice etc? Doesn’t really bug me. However ppl make a name for themselves is up to them. 10. Do you have any hobbies? I love the ocean so all water sports. Kite surfing, surfing, SUP (stand up paddle) I have a Yachtmaster license for sailing. I also enjoy gaming. 11. Where do you like to go to relax and get away from it all? Anywhere as long as there is a body of water nearby and sun! 12. Where will Ard Matthews be in ten years’ time? I choose to live one day at a time so I can’t be sure. • What is your current handicap? 18. Best I’ve been was 14. Consistency has always been a challenge for me cos I’m never in one place long enough to get in to any kind of ball hitting routine. • Where do you play out of? I’m a member at St Francis Links. Jeff and Liesl Clause are like family to me. • Which is your favourite South African golf course? Why St Francis Links obviously. • Your preferred golf club would be? I can hit my driver pretty well and quite far, 70% of the time. ;) • Do you walk or take a cart? I prefer walking but carts can be fun, especially if u need a cooler box to be carted around close to you. • Who is your favourite golfer? Tiger Woods. I still believe in him and I definitely think he the greatest golfer of all time. • Have you ever had a hole-in-one? No. But have lipped out twice. • Do you know any fellow musicians who also play golf? I know the Parlotones enjoy some golf but I’ve never played with them so they could be lying about how good they are ;) • Your ideal fourball would be? Tiger, Jeff Clause, Gideon Du Plessis and me.

Turning back the clock is the Golfer from the past?
WHO
• Our mystery golfer was born in Texas on August 1st 1914 and died on November 17th 1973. • He was known for his smooth swing and his relaxed demeanor on the course, which earned him the nickname “Mr. Icicle”. • He became a professional golfer at age fifteen, working as an assistant to his brother Ray, the head professional at Cliff-Dale Country Club in Dallas. He joined the PGA Tour in 1937 and went on to win 36 events on the Tour. • His career was interrupted by service in World War II, during which he won two Purple Hearts. • His only Major Championship win came at the 1946 U.S. Open, though he was runner-up in four Majors and third in five more. He lost two U.S. Open playoffs and finished in the top ten at the Maters for ten consecutive years. In 1940 he shot a tournament record 64 in the opening round, a record that stood for 46 years, until Nick Price shot a 63 in the third round in 1986. • Even though only 11 men have won more PGA Tour events, his reputation has been overshadowed by the other stars of his era that lived long, extraordinary lives and as such he has been called “the forgotten man of golf”.

Q&A on greens part 2 Q - How often do you have to change the pin placements? A –It all depends on the amount of players that played over a specific time period. The norm on most courses will be twice a week and the reasons are as follows.
All hole cutters will cut cups to the same depth, if a cup is lower than others on the same course then it will be the mistake from the person cutting the cups. This to me is one of the most important tasks on a green because this is where competitions gets won or lost.

Q - How do you control the speed of a green?

A – The speed of the green can be controlled in many ways.
Q - Is there a rule or a certain distance that the hole needs to be from the edge of the green ? A – There are no rules, only guidelines. If there can be one rule, then it will be to keep it fair and fun and reasonable at all times. Q - Does the cup in a green need to be a certain depth? A – There is a standard cup size and cup depth.

Q - Don’t you think that the new plastic spikes can carry more foreign grass seeds or fungus?
Q - Is there an ideal speed for a green?
A – Grass seed is usually transported from one course to the next by spikes, whether it is soft spikes or metal spikes. Many courses have trays with fungicide mixtures close to the first tee, this is to enable the golfer to step into the mixture and clean his shoes before playing your course.
A – The ideal speed for a green is the speed that works for each club and their members and will also be determined by slopes on greens and many other weather factors like wind. We try to keep our greens as close to 10 on the stimpmeter, anything quicker and we run the risk of balls being blown off the greens if we have severe wind. Q - How do you prevent the fairway or rough grass growing into the green? A – We have cool season grass on the fairways and green surrounds, this is a non-creeping grass and therefore we do not have problems with grass growing into our greens. Courses with kikuyu or kweek fairways are using constant edging procedures to prevent these grasses from growing into the greens. These edger’s can be motor driven or handheld edger’s, and cuts of the runners of the grass and removing them on a constant basis. With greens construction you can also add a thick plastic liner on the edge of the green to prevent other grass roots from growing into the green. Q - In your opinion, are soft spikes better for the putting surfaces or the old metal spikes?
Q - If a pitch mark is repaired immediately and properly, how long does it take before it is 100% back to normal? A – A perfectly repaired pitch mark is ready immediately after it was repaired, a badly repaired pitch mark will be visible for weeks and usually the grass dies when it is not done correctly. Q - Do you have to water the greens once a day or more than once? A – It depends on weather conditions, usually during summer months we have our night irrigation cycles and during the day we have staff watering the greens with hosepipes. Q - Is there a big difference in the maintenance of a green during winter and summer? A – Yes, during winter there are much less disease on greens due to the cold weather and therefore less spraying gets done. We also do less dusting of greens and the water usage for greens irrigation almost drops by 80%. Q - Is artificial greens an option?
A – Soft spikes are better and they leave less disruption around the hole than the old metal spikes, this leaves a smoother putting surface for the following group of golfers behind you.

Plus, they kept noticing, she was very attractive. When they reached the 18th hole, she said that if she sank her 18-footer, she’d break 80 for the first time. “Guys, I’m so excited about breaking 80 that I have to tell you something. I had a great time playing with you. I can tell you all really love golf. I want you to know that I’m single and want to marry a man who loves golf as much as I do. If one of you guys can read this putt correctly and I make it, I’ll marry whichever of you was right!” All three jumped at the opportunity. The first one looked over the putt and said, “I see it breaking 10 inches left to right.” The second looked it over from all sides and said, “No, I see it breaking eight inches right to left.” The third man looked at the woman, looked at the ball, and said, “Pick it up. It’s good!” Jesus and Moses are playing golf in Heaven when they come to the par-three 17th hole, a long carry over water to an island green. Moses tees off with a 3-wood and hits the green. Jesus takes out his 5-iron and says, “I’m going to hit a 5-iron because Arnold Palmer would hit a 5-iron from here.” Jesus tees it up and hits a lofted iron shot that finishes 25 yards short of the green and in the water. Jesus turns to Moses and says, “How about parting the water so I can play my ball where it lies?” Moses says, “No way. You foolishly chose the wrong

Then you can hit your ball through the door and back to the fairway.” He looks at her, shakes his head, and explains, “No way. The last time I tried that, I made triple ! A friend of Henry’s dies suddenly. A week later, he comes back to tell his friend how great Heaven is. “Henry,” he says, “you won’t believe it, but there is golf in Heaven.” “That is wonderful!” Henry replies. “Don’t be so thrilled,” his friend tells him. “You have a tee-off time scheduled for Saturday.”
