WINNING LETTER Dear Editor I would like to recall my experience of joining a new club a couple of years ago. I will not mention the name, but let me just say it is a very popular municipal course. Having recently joined and not knowing many people, I joined the club to make new friends and acquaintances. The first round, I was to play, was the midweek club foursome.
As we were about to tee off, our four ball realised that we hadn’t received our scorecard, so I approached the organiser. He promptly stated that he gave it to me. I inform him, he didn’t. This sparks him off, as he spits and fumes, how dare me a mere mortal disagree with this God of the hallowed golf course. I smile at this outrageous reaction, and am then told ‘to wipe the smirk off my face.’ Have I just been time warped back to my school days?
So I pitch up, keen to have a game, but not knowing procedures and where to meet my fellow competitors. I quickly popped into the bar to ask. I explained my situation to the “gentleman” behind the bar. His reply, in the most hostile of manners, was, ‘I will tell you if you take your cap off” (something which I normally do). So upon removal of my hat I managed to obtain the necessary information.
The furious organiser stormed off. Two minutes later he reappeared. With no apology, he said that he found the appropriate card in his back pocket. So this was my welcome, to this ‘marvellous’ club. Needless to say I did not stay a member for very long. Come on guys, in this day and age, when new members are scarce to the game, this archaic superior golfing attitude, should have gone out with the Dodo.

During the economic boom many courses adopted an aloof attitude and one almost felt that they were doing you a favour by letting you play there. In this day and age with many other sports and hobbies competing for consumers hard earned cash one would think that the saying “the customer is king” would be foremost in most golf

PGA NEWS Poll Shows Professional Golfers
Are The Ultimate Business Travellers From professional golfers to caddies to tournament staffers, the golf community is comprised of seasoned business travelers. Results released reveal that PGA TOUR golfers travel on average more than 70000 kilometres per year for tournament activity, equating to almost two round the world trips.
A
head of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, Crowne Plaza® Hotels & Resorts, in partnership with the PGA TOUR, investigated player travel activity and polled more than 70 golfers across the PGA TOUR, Champions Tour and Web.com Tour to uncover their travel-related habits and preferences.
The poll also revealed that staying connected while on the road for work was important for players. Complimentary Wi-Fi was a key priority with 86 percent of players polled marking this as one of the most important things a hotel can offer them.
Other notable findings from the player poll reveal: • 92 percent of respondents travel with a smart phone; 73 percent travel with a tablet and 58 percent with a laptop while on the road for work • 97 percent of respondents use hotel Wi-Fi multiple times per day while 100 percent said they use it at least once a day • Being professional athletes, 58 percent of respondents stated that the ability to continue their fitness routine is most essential in helping maintain a health and fitness regimen while on the road.
Results revealed that more than half (56 percent) of golfers across the PGA TOUR, Champions Tour or Web.com Tour are on the road for work – either for tournament play or sponsor obligations – at least 150 nights per year, with 22 percent amassing more than 200 nights on the road.

Women’s golf set to flourish
I
n a year when women’s golf has already enjoyed the spotlight, Michelle
Wie’s maiden Major championship victory in the US Open at Pinehurst has brought a further boost to women’s golf. With Wie in contention for the win, television ratings for the final round were up 89 percent on the previous year and were the highest since 2007 for a Sunday at the US Women’s Open. Wie’s star billing, plus the decision to host both the men’s and women’s Opens at the same course for the first time, has seen women’s golf receive major attention this season already.
The LPGA’s resurgence is continuing with yet more growth in Asia, signing new Tour events in China, adding to the existing locations of Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea. This, coupled with the information on the infographic above, suggests that women’s golf is set to flourish further as we look ahead to 2015. The recent success of American players on the LPGA has also impacted the Tour in a positive manner. The performances of Stacy Lewis, Lexi Thompson, Jessica Korda and Wie have catapulted women’s golf up the television ratings in North America with 9 of the 15 events this year having been won by American golfers.
The decision by the BBC to broadcast the Ricoh Women’s British Open back to back with the men’s Open at Royal Liverpool should see this period of support for the women’s game continue.

‘Have Faith!’ Ulterior motives to poor putting! by Paul Cuningham, PGA Qualified Teaching Professional at Eagle Canyon
T
he correct putter fitment is key to good putting no matter what putting technique you choose! Standing on a flat surface with your feet the same width apart in your current technique, place the putter head on the ground next to your right shoe (right handers) with the shaft running up the seem of your trouser leg. Then with great posture, like a sentry at a gate & your arms hanging naturally down your side, extend your finger tips down the grip. Your finger tips should cut the mid point of a standard putter grip or be your grip connection point on a non-conventional length putter.

The “Almost Belly”
1 - Standard reverse over-lap grip at the connection point where the finger tips cut the grip in (pic 1). 2 - There is no grip end connection to the body but the extension in grip length (a 39 incher) acts as a counter balance to hand wobble & helps stabilize the putter head through impact. The heavier over all weight of this style of putter also helps slow down fast transition & regulates better rhythm in the stroke. Plus the long grip handle acts to dampen vibration up the shaft enhancing your feel. 3 - Some awesome new Srixon kit! 4 - Cleveland Smart Square “Almost Belly”. Cut it down to your spec & make sure your belly doesn’t grow to create a rules violation! A synchronized putting stroke, with a nice smooth tempo back & through - a nice slow count of 1 - 2 will do :-) Notice how the putter always stays in line with the bodies centre & the shoulder-line rocks in sync with the putter head. The “T” formed by the shoulders & putter should be maintained back & through the stroke.
Going “ Kuch Style”
1 - As long as the butt end of the putter is not directly connected to your body you can forward press the shaft extension against your forearm
& this will also stabilize the putter head better through impact. This should eliminate those small muscle groups (hands) from firing & help the bigger muscle groups (arms/shoulders) engage more efficiently through the stroke. 2 - Once the angle is set at address & maintained throughout the stroke (like a good chipping technique) there won’t be any break down in the action & more consistency can be achieved. 3 - With “Kuch Style” make sure your putter has enough loft to launch the ball cleanly across the putting surface & not squeezing it into the turf or else you will battle into the grain or up hill putts. Give these two options a go. There’s always a solution to every situation, so have faith & let’s see you smiling on the dance floor again.

If, during a stipulated round, a playerยนs club is damaged in the normal course of play, he may: (i) use the club in its damaged state for the remainder of the stipulated round; or (ii) without unduly delaying play, repair it or have it repaired; or (iii) as an additional option available only if the club is unfit for play, replace the damaged club with any club. The replacement of a club must not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7) and must not be made by borrowing any club selected for play by any other person playing on the course or by assembling components carried by or for the player during the stipulated round.

McIlroy’s case won’t be heard until early 2015, well after the Ryder Cup. Having spent enough time around the introspective McDowell, we’re betting that even if he did harbor disfavor with McIlroy’s legal actions, he’d never comment publicly. He’s a bigger man than that. No, instead here’s betting Europe will use this as another rallying cry against its real foe—the media.

at the 16th and 17th holes from Roos proved enough to claim his second title, which followed on from his maiden triumph at the Barclays Kenya Open back in March. “It was an amazing day, just so up and down,” said Roos, who moved to fourth on the Challenge Tour Rankings. “I haven’t thought about a third win yet, but I’m very happy with my game, so I will try and play as much as I can here in Europe, where I feel more comfortable now. “

“living the dream” The Clarens Valley in the Eastern Free State Highlands is situated 20 km’s from the Golden Gate National Park, 40 km’s from Bethlehem, and on the northernmost point of Lesotho. The tragic sinking of the Titanic caused a stir amongst the towns folk and one unknown resident looked toward the ‘nek’ a large, prominent jutting rock and proclaimed, ‘It looks like the Titanic’. The rock formation has been called the Titanic ever since. The huge rock stands like a sentry to welcome all who visit the village, inviting them to come and experience the warm-hearted hospitality of the inhabitants.

The playing surface of the manicured Kikuyu fairways and Bent grass greens are framed by mature Willow and magnificent Lombardi poplar trees, characteristic of the area. This layout is a classic “risk and reward” design. With the fairways wide at the landing areas off the tees, one can easily reach the greens in regulation to your handicap. However, nearly every green hugs the water, so it’s a case of play safe to your handicap, or attack the flags to “go low”. 2-day ‘Best of Mossel Bay’ tournament for Mossel Bay Sports Festival Mossel Bay’s iconic championship golf courses have announced that they’ll be holding a joint 2-day tournament during the town’s annual Sports Festival – and at an almost unbelievable price, too.

he Pinnacle Point and Mossel Bay Golf Clubs are hoping to grow the tournament into a not-to-be-missed, permanent feature of their calendars. The inaugural event will take place on Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th of October, 2014.

Participants will play Mossel Bay on Friday, and Pinnacle Point on Saturday, with prize-giving functions for daily winners taking place at the respective club houses at the end of each day.
Mr. Strydom said that festinos will be invited to take advantage of Mossel Bay Golf Club’s all-year-round special offer for Sundays and Mondays. “A round of golf will cost only R 170.00 per player, or R 265.00 per player with golf cart hire, provided that the cart is shared with another player.”
“And after Saturday’s prize giving and the announcement of the overall winners, we’ll have a wrap-up party at the Pinnacle Point clubhouse, with great food and drink and awesome entertainment - and hopefully with some merriment that’ll go on into the late hours of the night,” said AJ Steyn, the Assistant Director of Golf at Pinnacle Point.
“We at Pinnacle will also be running a family special during the remainder of the Festival period,” said Mr. Steyn. “We encourage the growth of the game, and the best way to do that is to involve the kids – so any child under 18 playing with a parent or responsible adult who pays the full rate, will play for free.”
The event will be open to all golfers playing with an official handicap.
A round of golf at Pinnacle Point during the Mossel Bay Sports Festival will cost R 490.00 (including green fees and golf cart).
The good news, said Mr. Steyn, is that entry will cost just R 600.00 per player.
The Mossel Bay Sports Festival will run from the 3rd to the 7th of October, 2014.
“That’s amazing value when you consider that it includes two days of golf - with cart hire included on the Saturday – as well as an evening of entertainment,” said Mr. Steyn. Hannes Hopley – former South African discus thrower 1. Where were you born and which schools did you attend?
I was born in Pretoria in 1981 and lived in Rustenburg all my life until I moved to the USA for an athletic scholarship at Southern Methodist University in Dallas Texas where I completed a Degree in Economics and Management Information Systems.
2. Do you come from a sporting family?
Not really. My dad was pretty good at running in his day, but never took it further.
3. What sports did you play at school?
Athletics all my life, and rugby up to grade 9.
4. You came first at the World Junior Championships in 2000, how old were you then and how did your career take off from then?
Yes, I was RSA junior and African Junior champion before I won the World Junior Champs in Santiago Chile. Through that achievement I made my way to the USA for a few years to study and to compete on a high level. The American Collegiate (University Athletics Program) is very advanced and far more competitive than the South African local athletics circuit, plus I got an education at the same time. This truly was the best time of my life.

5. You represented South Africa at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. How did you place there and what was that experience like? I made the final and finished 8th at age 23, which is pretty young for a discus thrower considering peak age is around 30 to 35. The Olympics is larger than life and an experience I cannot explain in words. It truly is the pinnacle of every sportsman’s career.
6. What was your best distance and where and when did that occur?
67.66m in College Station, Texas, USA in 2004. Also did my best in Shot put 19.58m that same day! It was an awesome day.
7. What was your training regime like at the height of your career?
3 hours per day technical training and 2.5 to 3 hours per day strength training and lots of sleep!
8. What was your maximum bench press?
260kg – with no assistance from anyone. I did have a spotter, but DON’T TOUCH MY BENCH when I’m busy.

GETTING ON TO GOLF 1. When did you start to play golf?
In 2006 when I saw an opportunity in the Range ball market and started WeGotBalls. co.za. At that point I had never held a golf club – and what I knew about golf was dangerous. I had a golf ball business but had no idea what golf was. Since then I have been selling range balls to golf ranges all across south Africa for the past 8 years. We also specialize in used quality golf balls in different grades sold from our website and shipped throughout the country via courier and post. www.wegotballs. co.za
2. What is your current handicap?
I am totally handicapped when it comes to golf. I really don’t play enough. To busy working!
3. Where do you play out of?
I am based in Alberton, Gauteng, and play out of Reading. I’m not a member anywhere.
4. Which is your favourite South African golf course? 9. Who was the best discus thrower of all time? Jurgen Schult from Germany threw 74.08m a hell of a long time ago….
10. Are there any exciting South African prospects at the moment?
I must be honest, since I got married and started my family I have not kept track at all.
11. What advice would you give to aspiring young athletes?
Be focused at all times. Sleep Enough. And remember, it is not what you do the 3 hours training each day but the other 21 hours of each day which will make you a great athlete (my Coach Dave Wollman from SMU said that to me the first we met in 2001 – he was 110% right).
12. What do you do for relaxation?
I shoot my hunting rifle at the shooting range these days – don’t have much time for golf.
13. Do you live by a specific mantra?
I’ve only played like 5 courses in my life, but at this point Serengeti is a lovely course!
5. Which is your favourite golf course when overseas? I was overseas a lot in my lifetime, but never took my golf clubs.
6. Do you walk or take a cart?
I walk ... I really need the exercise since retiring from Athletics. However, sometimes I take the cart
7. Your favourite golfer is?
Tiger. Don’t ask why as I can’t tell you.
8. Have you ever had a hole-in-one? Hahaha. No…
9. Your ideal fourball would be?
Good Question… Arnold Schwarzenegger , Tiger Woods, Janus Robberts … and myself of course.

Gorlei wins dramatic Nomads SA Girls tussle Western Province junior Cara Gorlei became the first play-off champion of the Nomads SA Girls Championship since 1976 when she ended a three-player shootout at the fourth extra hole, while 13-year-old Kajyuree Moodley from Gauteng prevailed for a wire-to-wire B-Section victory at Orkney GC on the first of July.

orlei lagged five shots off the pace after a costly second round 80, while defending champion Ji Sun Kang from Western Province started the final round two behind overnight leader, Ivanna Samu.
However, 18-year-old Gorlei reproduced the form that carried her to the first round lead and set the clubhouse target at eight-over-par 224 with a three birdie, three bogey even-par 72. Samu from Gauteng fought valiantly to reverse the damage of two doubles and a triple bogey and forced the play-off with a 77, and Kang made it three for extra time with a 75. It took two visits to the 17th and 18th holes before stalemate was broken by Gorlei, who sunk a nervy five meter putt with a birdie at the par-four closing hole to triumph.

TuksSport clinches SA High School Champs Marco Steyn held his nerve under the extreme pressure to clinch the 2014 SA High School Championship title for TuksSport High School in a sudden-death play-off against Cameron Moralee from Rundle College at Bloemfontein GC last month.

uksSport High combined for an opening 225, but lagged four shots behind joint first round leaders, Rundle College and Hilton College.
While Hilton faded, the newcomers stayed in the race with a final round 225 after Allan Lones carded a 72, Moralee posted a 75 and Haydn Garcia produced a 77. “We knew we had at least five shots to make up if we wanted a shot at the title,” said TuksGolf General Manager, Johan Steyn. “Dylan Naidoo took it upon himself to step it up after his non-counting 85 in the first round. He played a champions round and his 72 significantly boosted the team. It took a lot of guts and we were incredibly proud of his determination.” Steyn returned a 73 and rising star Sentanio Minnie posted a 76 for a 221 to tie Rundle on 446.

Both teams then had to nominate a player for the ensuing sudden-death play-off. Rundle nominated Moralee, who followed an opening 65 with a final round 75 and won the Individual Competition. TuksSport High nominated Steyn, who recently won the ProShop Northern Amateur Stroke Play and made the match play semi-final. “We actually selected Marco well ahead of the final round, because he carried some great form into the championship,” Steyn explained. “It turned out to be the right decision for the team.” Steyn and Moralee returned to the par-four 10th where the TuksSport High player split the fairway with a three-wood, while the Rundle player hooked his tee shot into the trees. Moralee punched out into a greenside bunker, while Steyn mailed his approach from 80 feet to the centre of the green. verything changed when Richards lifted the Free State & Northern Cape Championship.
“I was so thrilled to get back into the winner’s circle,” the 26-year-old Nelspruit golfer said. “Defending my title at the Limpopo Champs win has just given me more confidence.” Richards carded rounds of 76, 76 and 78 to beat Lara Weinstein by one shot. “Lara is on a break from America, where she has been playing college golf. She was one of our top amateurs before she left and she has been exposed to a lot more international experience,” Richards said. “It meant a lot to me that I was able to beat her under difficult circumstances.

For the 11th time since the All-Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) launched in 1992, a South African women’s amateur team claimed success in Africa’s most prestigious biennial championship last month.

agda Kruger, Michaela Fletcher and Cara Gorlei showed the same tenacity, commitment and determination as their predecessors to ensure the country’s successful title defence at the Muthaiga GC in Nairobi.
Steyn clinches ProShop Northern Amateur Modderfontein’s Marco Steyn drained an eagle putt at the 18th hole of the East Course at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington to seal a onestroke victory in the ProShop Northern Amateur Stroke Play Championship last month.

he maiden win on the Open Amateur circuit puts Steyn eighth on the 2014 first-time winner’s list this season.
Steyn’s first win this season follows closely on a runner-up finish at the Coastal Nomads National Order of Merit tournament at St Francis Links last month.
Fletcher from KwaZulu-Natal birdied three par-fives and the par-four on her way to a closing threeunder-par 68 to safeguard the team’s six stroke overnight lead.
The Tuksgolf Club and Academies student lagged six strokes off the pace at 36-hole mark, with Royston in the driver’s seat at six-under-par 138 after rounds of 71 and 67.
Western Province’s Gorlei added an 80, while Kruger from Gauteng North signed for a non-counting 81.
However, a flawless seven-under-par 65 left the 17-year-old in a challenging position heading into the final round at the home of the Sunshine Tour’s Joburg Open.
Rounds of 146, 148 and 148 secured an 11 stroke victory for South Africa on a winning score of 442. Meanwhile Kenya held up under huge pressure from Tanzania to combine for a final round 151 to clinch the runner-up spot on 453.

Spraying of Chemicals
When it comes to applying certain chemicals to turf or any other areas of the golf course, it is vital that there must be a competent, qualified person involved. The minimum requirements must be a certified PCO (Pest control operator) per course and this person will be responsible for the mixing of chemicals and the training of the staff applying these chemicals. When applying any chemical, safety is key!

Recordkeeping of all products in stock and also of all chemicals applied is vital to a good operation. These data sheets will help you when you encounter the same disease problems or insects in the future, it takes all the guessing out of the picture and provides you with concrete historical data and results from the applications. Calibration of your spraying equipment should happen at least twice a month depending on how much you are spraying. This is a practice that takes a couple of minutes,

Without knowing how much water your equipment will put out over a certain area, you will never get the product to perform to its true potential, not mentioning the unsafe act of over applying products because people are just not trained to use these products safely. Ask a qualified person how you should calibrate your equipment if you are unsure.
The normal look for a spray technician when spraying chemicals that can be detrimental to his health should look like this.
When applying products, always read the label. These labels are the end result of years and years of research and then combined into an easy to read label with mixing instructions, rate per hectare, type of control and so much more. If you do not follow the manufacturerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s guidelines and you do not see results, or you cause damage to your turf, then you have only yourself to blame. Nozzle selection is important when considering the mode of application. When applying soil based products that should be watered in after application, then you will use larger nozzles that puts down much more water per hectare that the finer nozzles. You can differentiate between foliar nozzles and soil nozzles. Your fungicides that get taken up by the leaf of the plant are usually applied with a much finer nozzle to ensure a good coverage over the entire leaf surface. Target only the disease or pest that you need to target and do not spray chemicals unnecessarily! Our environment is worth much more to us alive and strong.

Golf Course Development Cost Survey 2014 (Part 2 of 3) Developing a golf course – from concept to realization Key motivations
From a pure investment perspective, we see four strong motivating factors behind a decision to include golf in a broader development, namely: • Golf courses have a strong track record of providing an increase in selling prices and sales velocity of adjacent residential real estate; • Golf can help drive demand for onsite hospitality functions such as hotels and serviced apartments; • Golf courses can act as a useful “positioning tool” for upscale developments; • If designed, built and operated in a professional manner (and with favourable market character istics), golf courses can provide a viable return on investment in their own right. Our survey of golf course developers shows that in 39% of the cases the main aim of the golf course development was to add value to the surrounding real estate development, while a third of the projects were driven primarily by profit-seeking objectives. In the MENA region and in Sub-Saharan Africa, where the vast majority of newly developed courses are part of tourist resorts or residential communities, each project was driven by a real estate price uplift. The proportion of mainly profit-driven golf course developments was the highest in Central Europe and Western Europe, 58% in each of these two regions.
In comparison to 25% in the 2008 edition of this research, only 16% of the surveyed developers were motivated by personal interest in golf. A surprisingly high 47% of respondents in Eastern Europe indicated their own golf interest as their primary motivation for the development, followed by 31% in Northern Europe and 12% in Great Britain and Ireland, where golf has great tradition and participation rates are especially high. In the GBI region, more than a third of the respondents highlighted that the improvements were made to meet demands from club members. In some of the cases land was utilized for golf course development as there was no alternative option. Not a single respondent was primarily motivated by making use of funds and subsidies.

Selecting suppliers
During the development of a golf course the project team can involve a number of different skilled members, as illustrated in the chart below. While every project is different, this chart suggests the various professionals to be involved at the main stages of a golf course development. When the golf course is part of a broader real estate development, there is an increased role for master planners and financial advisors to create a sustainable concept. Focusing on the golf course element itself within a broader real estate development, in the pla ning and construction phases the golf course designer and the construction company play a crucial role. There are specialized golf course construction companies (as opposed to non-specialists) which developers often employ, especially in the case of higher quality golf courses. As part of our research, we asked the survey participants what their rationale had been when choosing the golf course designers and the construction companies for their development.

As with our findings in previous years, our recent survey also demonstrates that the selection of key suppliers often happens through informal channels, based on referrals or reputation. In many cases the golf architect introduces the construction company to the developer. Subcontractors were also chosen via open tender, while in about a tenth of the cases the design and/ or construction works were done in-house. In some cases, the developers or project managers had previously worked with the selected supplier.
How long does it take to develop a golf course? It usually takes 4-5 years to develop a golf course from concept to realization. Within this, the length of the permitting procedure can vary significantly depending on the country concerned, the nature of the site and the characteristics of the planned development. In some areas (e.g. the Middle East), all necessary permits for a course development can be obtained within a few months, especially if the development is in line with a government plan/strategy. On the other hand, in Northern and Central Europe, golf developers often face very strict planning regulations and environmental opposition, and in extreme cases permitting can take up to 3-4 years.
Planning and design is mostly done within one year; the construction work typically takes 2-2.5 years, depending on the topography of the site, the quality of soil, the availability of water, the climatic conditions and of course the expected quality, complexity or playing difficulty of the designed golf course. For 9-hole courses, construction work takes 5-6 months less on average than for 18-hole courses, and both planning and design can generally be completed in a shorter period as well.

What are the main difficulties encountered during the development of a golf course? Developers can face a number of unexpected difficulties during a golf course construction project, all of which can affect the length of time for development. Rejection of permit applications can delay and even block the entire project. Developers are aware that even the most spectacular design is worthless if they cannot obtain permits. As with the findings of our previous surveys, obtaining the necessary permits was the most frequently mentioned problem faced during the development of golf courses in EMA (35%), and even more so in Western Europe (50%).
difficulties keeping within their original budgets. In this regard it is worthwhile mentioning that having access to bank financing has become far more difficult than in pre-crisis years. Earthwork and rocky terrain was a typical problem in Western Europe, whereas environmental opposition was a difficulty for a number of developers, mostly in Northern Europe. Unfavorable weather conditions were hard to deal with in Great Britain and Ireland, as well as in Northern and Eastern Europe. Unsurprisingly, in the Middle East, the biggest difficulty appears to have been the limited availability of water.

• Born in Woodson, Illinois in the U.S.A. on April 25th 1916, he passed away on September 23rd 1994. • One of nine children raised on an Illinois farm near Jacksonville, he turned professional in 1942. Small in stature, he was one of the top putters of his era. • He was a full-time member of the PGA Tour from 1948 to 1962. He played on two Ryder Cup teams, 1955 and 1961; and was also the team captain in 1961. • He was the Player of the Year on the PGA Tour in 1961, unseating Arnold Palmer for a year. • He won the 1961 PGA Championship at age 45 which at the time made him the oldest player to win a major. • He holds the record for the oldest player to ever play on the PGA Tour, when he played in the 1994 Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines at the age of 77 years, 10 months, and 9 days. He died later that year.
• He and his wife Lucile, who died of cancer in 1968, had five children.

T
he Ladies European Tour has been down under for 3 co-sanctioned events in Australia and New Zealand with Stacy Bregman having a brilliant start to her 2014 campaign with a tied 3rd at the Volvic RACV Masters and a tied 11th at the New Zealand Open. After her great start to the season and continuing good form, Stacy is set to secure a spot in the Ladies British Open in July as she is currently ranked 12 on the Order Of Merit. Top 25 players otherwise not exempt get into the British Open. This year the Ricoh Woman’s British Open will be played at Royal Birkdale from 10th – 13th July. Hopefully a tour win is on the cards for Stacy this year! Keep it up! Then it was off to Morocco for the Lalla Meryem Cup held in Agadir, Golf de l’Ocean, where Lee Ann Pace had a good start to her season with a tied 4th. Stacy posed another solid result with tied 10th. I think it is fair to say, with mention to my previous article, that the South African players do hit the ground running on international soil following on from local events. The resurgence of the Sunshine Ladies Tour has given our girls a much needed boost. What better way to play in an overseas event, brimming with confidence gained from local tour success? Again, I think we should credit those parties involved for their continued belief and support in Woman’s Professional Golf and the wonderful game we play: Woman’s PGA, SuperSport, Sun International, Dimension Data

and last but by no means least, Investec. I am positive that the 2015 will be even better! On a different note Ashley Simon is playing on the LPGA Tour and has already posted some great results thus far. Ashley, having secured her full playing status last year at LPGA Tour School will play a combination of both the American and European Tour. Lee Ann Pace only secured a conditional card at the LPGA Tour School however; she will also get several starts on the LPGA due to her high world ranking. In other news, the co-sanctioned South African Woman’s Open will be played at San Lameer Golf Golf from the 16th to the 19th October. Aside from the venue being confirmed for hosting the event, a new title Sponsor has come onboard: Cell C. The prize fund for this event is Eur320,000 and I am positive that all our South African girls will play well! The word golf does not mean “Gentleman Only, Ladies Forbidden”. This is an internet myth. It is thought the word golf comes from the Dutch word “kolf” or “kolve”, meaning “club”. Historians believe this was passed on to the Scottish, whose own dialect changed this to “golve,” “gowl” or “gouf”. By the sixteenth century, this had evolved into the word we know today.
