Du Toit, Van Leeuwen win top PGA of SA awards PGA NEWS

It’s an award I have always aspired to achieve and having my name alongside legends in the PGA is truly an honour. I couldn’t have done this on my own and have to thank everyone that helped shape my career as a PGA professional,” said Du Toit.

he PGA of South Africa has announced two of its most dynamic professionals as the winners of PGA Professional of the Year and PGA Teaching Professional of the Year.
Van Leeuwen was equally humbled by his award. “I was nominated a few times for this award and this is the first time I’ve received it. It’s very nice to be recognised for your work. We’ve got such a good team here and we take the team approach to the next level. TuksSport sets high performance standards so this award fits in with that vision.
Meyer du Toit, the Golf Director at San Lameer Golf Estate in KwaZulu-Natal, was voted the 2015 PGA Professional of the Year. And Llewellyn van Leeuwen, the Head Coach at the TuksGolf Academy in Gauteng North, was voted the Teaching Professional of the Year.

A
s the saying goes, “there are no pictures on the scorecard,” but I have seen many players spend all their practice time hitting ball after ball on the driving range trying to engrain that “textbook swing.” Unfortunately most of these players are consistently disappointed with the scores they shoot when they get out onto the golf course. The aim of golf is to take as few shots as possible, and to achieve this you need to firstly understand which parts of your game are costing you shots and then determine what practice would be most effective at improving these

areas. So many great players in history have been considered “unorthodox,” but all of them developed the necessary skills to produce good scores. I have had great success here at TGSE using my player’s statistics to guide what needs improvement, and where we can save the greatest number of shots over the shortest space of time. One such player I began working with toward the end of 2015, Chalton Steyn, had a stroke average of 82,89. He was hitting 70,63% of his fairways, 53% of his

tuition & instruction greens in regulation, averaging 35,56 putts per round and making only 11,84% of his scrambles. While Chalton needed quite a few technical changes to his swing, which we got to work on straight away, I realised that this would be a long-term process and take some time to see reward. We decided to target the skills necessary for him to improve his shortgame and putting, by introducing a daily practice plan that incorporated a variety of drills. Through Chalton’s incredible work ethic and diligence he has achieved remarkable results. By the end of March this year, he had reduced his putts per round by 4.5 strokes to 31 and increased his scrambling to 55,7%. This enabled him to improve his stroke average by nearly 6 shots to 75,70, remarkable progress over such a short space of time. The important message here is that changing the way something looks does not necessarily improve it’s efficiency, be sure to invest in an instructor who is willing to help you make those precious hours of practice count. Work out what really needs to improve for you to take fewer strokes and then find effective ways of practicing it. Spending your time in this manner is sure to help you play consistently better golf and therefore get even more enjoyment out of this great game. Here is a putting drill that Chalton completes each day, he places 8 Tees around four separate holes at the following lengths: 1 Putter Length 1 Driver Length 2 Driver Lengths 3 Driver Lengths

He then hits only one putt from each tee, keeping score of how many he holes. This is great practice as it is highly transferable to the golf course, the better you get at it, the fewer putts you will take during your rounds. You are getting 32 different putts from a variety of distances and angles and only get one chance

at each. 20 out of 32 is considered Chalton’s par, as per his goals at each distance. Here is a bunker drill that Chalton completes each day, he places 4 cones at one driver length radius, around three separate holes. Once he has got 5 shots to come to rest within a driver length radius of the first hole, he can move onto the next. Chalton is required to keep note of how many shots it takes to achieve this at each hole, and this is how we can track his improvement. If you feel that 1 driver length radius is too difficult to begin with, don’t hesitate to make it twice as big until your skill levels grow.

After close calls in the last two editions of the INDWE SA Senior Amateur Inter-Provincial, Central Gauteng produced a champions’ innings on the final day to end Western Province’s reign in the prestigious national senior team championship.
Super Seniors Western Province defeated KwaZulu-Natal 4 – 2 and Gauteng North 4.5 – 1.5 to put an exclamation mark on an undefeated production. The defending champions triumphed on 10 points and finish a full five points ahead of Central Gauteng, who edged out Ekurhuleni for second with 4.5 games points.

Instead, Central Gauteng won in convincing style to reclaim the title they owned 11 times between 2002 and 2013. Team manager Jaco du Plessis said the victory paid homage to the hard work the team put into their preparation and their capacity as eight individual stars to come together as a team. “Each guy on the team is a great player in his own right, but the key to success in team events is for those eight stars to form a unit,” Du Plessis said. “We studied the R&A manuals for the Ryder Cup and the Walker Cup to understand how we could unite the players as a team and their efforts and their success this week demonstrated their commitment to each other. “A successful team has no pecking order, no superstars; it’s just eight guys who play for each other and who play for

Rebula happy to be in the hunt again
T
wo victories in his last three starts has rocketed former top ranked junior Jovan Rebula from George to the number two spot in the South African Golf Association Open Amateur rankings. Rebula broke back into the upper echelons of amateur golf when he defeated Luca Filippi for the Western Province Amateur Championship title at Clovelly CC last month. “It’s been a long while since I featured in the top five and it’s just such a good feeling to be back there,” he admitted. “You know, you come from dominating in the junior ranks to the Open Amateur circuit and it’s a bit of a shock because you to have to start at the bottom again. That’s one of the biggest lessons in golf. You have to pay your dues to get to the top. It’s part of the process and you just have to play your way through it.” Apart from a runner-up finish in the Gauteng North Open and reaching the final of the Sanlam SA Amateur Championship, Rebula’s 2015 season was pretty bare of memorable moments. “I did win the Pezula Open and Oubaai Open on the Southern Cape Golf Union circuit, but that was the choice I had to make,” he explained. “But I was in my
final year at Outeniqua High and the studies had to take priority over golf. I just didn’t have the time to practice and it showed in my results.” With matric behind him, Rebula started the 2016 with the determination to make a comeback. The Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member started showing glimpses of form with a top five finish in the Gauteng North Open and tie for fifth in the SA Stroke Play Championship and came agonisingly close to a podium finish in the Southern Cape Open in February. He followed a tie for eighth in the Sanlam Cape Province Open with a three top 20 finishes in March, but it was a seventh place finish in the North West Open that sparked victory in the Eastern Province/Border Stroke Play earlier last month. “For some reason, North West did the trick,” he said. “I think it was because I competed in a very strong field and came away knowing that I held my own at the Lost City GC. It was just the kick I needed. I felt hungry to compete and I felt that old confidence coming back again.

KURHULENI, 29 April 2016 – Between 2013 and 2014, former Youth Olympian Kyle McClatchie from Ekurhuleni and Southern Cape’s Jovan Rebula dominated the junior golf circuit at home and the pair was a tour de force for South Africa in international team events. However, both players faded from the golfing radar last year as academic pressure of the final year in high school mounted. After their matric exams, the formidable duo began the climb back to top in the South African U-19 Inter-Provincial Championship in December last year and, as the age-old golf adage goes, cream always rises to the top.

“I actually had a chance in East London,” said the 18-yearold Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate golfer. “I was five shots clear of Jovan in the final round, but I bogeyed the last two holes and he beat me for the win. I was playing well, so I knew that my turn would come. I just had to stay patient.” McClatchie opened with an even-par 72 in the first round at Robertson GC to lag five shots off the pace from Aubrey Beckley.
Not surprisingly, Rebula rose to the number one spot in the Open Amateur rankings this week while McClatchie pushed his way to number six.

Pfeifer and Theron share SA Open delight American Chad Pfeifer rolled in a clutch putt for par at the final hole to celebrate a wire-to-wire victory in the Nedbank SA Disabled Open, while 19-year-old Stellenbosch University student Charl Theron upstaged South Africa’s big guns to top the local challenge with a tie for fourth. Pfeifer shot a final round one-over-par 72 to edge out 2014 champion Josh Williams by one shot to lift the trophy on a winning score of even-par 213 at Zwartkop CC Juan Postigo from Spain returned an 80 to take third on 225, while Theron closed with a 75 to grab a share of fourth on 231 to tie celebrated leg amputee Manuel de los Santos from the Dominican Republic, who shot a final round 81.

I am very proud to be called one of its champions. I met Ben van Zyl, who has won this title seven times and still plays a mean game. It will take a lot of return trips to equal that record.”
Pfeifer said he ticked a lot of boxes with this victory. “This means the world to me,” Pfeifer said. “I wanted to raise awareness for disabled golf outside the United States, I wanted to put this championship on the map and I wanted to win this title since Josh told me about the Nedbank SA Disabled Open last year. “Josh said it’s one of the best tournaments in the world and I was really excited to come and see for myself. It

George Golf Club has always been regarded as one of the country’s great layouts.
T
he course was designed by Dr Charles Molteno Murray, who also had a hand in the designs of Royal Cape and Clovelly Golf Clubs. The current layout was officially opened in 1934, but it was almost 30 years earlier, in 1906, when George Golf Club was formed by enthusiastic golfers of the time who were playing the game at various smaller courses located on farms in the area. This is one of those courses that can be played again and again, and it grudgingly gives up its secrets to scoring well. No true golfer could ever tire of its charms or the local hospitality, and no matter

how well or poorly the player might do, they will surely always want to come back for more. Long-hitters will feel that they can overpower the layout, because by modern standards it is certainly not long – but the tree-lined fairways with some tight landing areas, and a few good pin positions will demand respect from the most accomplished players. Throw in some wind and the changes in elevation and George Golf Club will keep even the best players guessing. Best of all, this is a playable course that is fun to take on in any conditions.

Grace takes Heritage for first PGA Tour win. Branden Grace has had his share of big moments. He believes winning the RBC Heritage is his biggest, by far. The 27-year-old had won 10 times overseas, finished in the top five last year in the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, and went 5-0 for the International team at the Presidents Cup. Last month in the final round, he shot a 5-under 66 to overtake Luke Donald for his first title on the PGA Tour. “This really puts the cherry on top of the cake,” Grace said. “And I’m excited for things to start.” Grace has already fashioned a very accomplished career. He’s 11th in the Official World Golf Ranking and

three of his seven career wins on the European Tour have come since 2015. “I can tick this one off the box and head into the next couple of majors trying to win it,” he said. “I have one notch, I’ve done it before and I can do it again.” Grace finished at 9-under 275, two shots ahead of Donald and Russell Knox. Donald shot a 71, and Knox had a 67. Grace earned $1,062,000 and a PGA Tour exemption through the 2017-18 season, which he said was a weight off his mind and will allow him to comfortably contend without worrying about keeping his tour card.

The African Opens
T
his year the Zimbabwe and Zambia Opens were back to back on the schedule. We decided to drive and make a fun road trip out of the experience. By ‘we’ I am referring to my wife, Engelize and I. It shouldn’t come as a surprise however that the collective border posts have (to this point) clocked up over ten hours of quality time for our marriage. I’m certain that we will be flying next time. With that said however, we still managed to laugh ourselves through a few situations; including a bull elephant

charging our car off the road near Kariba Border Post. In hindsight it is a great story to tell at our next braai, but flying will be a lot easier on the soul. The tournaments were as hugely successful as ever, with thousands of spectators pouring through the gates of both world class venues. First stop, Royal Harare Golf Club for the Zimbabwe Open, followed by the Zambia Sugar Open at Lusaka Golf Club four days later.

S P E C I A L F E AT U R E - U ps & downs: L ife on the S unshine Tour Having grown up somewhere between the putting green and the Pro Shop at Royal Harare Golf Club thanks to my dad being the head professional there for ten years, it is always a special week for me personally. It does however come with its own unique pressures too. All of the club’s staff, from David the shoe cleaner, to Jonathan the barman have their own pep talks prepared for when I arrive on site to warm-up. An opening round of 71 settled the nerves but two clumsy middle rounds left me way down the leaderboard before a closing 71 (eventually) wound down a fairly disappointing week. Each swing always feels like the world depends on the outcome in that event, as there is nothing I would love more than to win my home Open. I’ve managed to make the cut six out of seven times, recording two top tens in the process but no fairytale ending as of yet. This year’s final round was dominated by one of the good guys out here, Lyle ‘SugarMan’ Rowe - If you see him around a chipping green, feel free to question the origins of his nickname. You’ll probably be met by a wry smile and witty chirp, as he’s never short of some entertaining banter out on tour. Similar to his Zambia Open victory two years ago, he put his head down and locked in

for the grind all day. As with his Zambian win, it paid off again with the overnight leaders faltering over the closing holes of a true Championship course and the ever solid Rowe was once more the last man standing. Before leaving Harare we had a text from Allan Versveld asking if there was a spot in the car for him as flights to Lusaka were pretty steep. “Jump in Al - We’ll even take the extra eighty kilometers on and drive over Kariba Dam Wall as part of the experience!” It was such a fun thought at the time and would have made for a great trip, had it not been for a slight glitch - a missing document left us at the border post for eight hours. After pleading our case for the car not to be impounded, the dust settled in perfect harmony with the conclusion that we were NOT in fact attempting to illegally import the car into Zimbabwe. Having been stopped on our way OUT of Zimbabwe you would think that it would have been simpler to convince Gerald the customs agent of this, but we obviously caught him on a bad day. Safely on the other side of the Zambezi we were met with an equally testing lay-out in the form of Lusaka

Golf Club. Tree lined dog-legs, raised greens and well placed bunkers combined with the swirling winds brought by the change of season, meant another over par cut-line by Friday evening. Having navigated my way through the first two rounds for a minus five total which left me in twelfth place heading into the weekend, things were looking positive. The late start on Saturday was warmly welcomed, as to be honest my game has not been at its best of late. This week was starting to feel different though - I remember this feeling! Not much had happened through the first fourteen holes, as I turned onto the homeward stretch from the fifteenth tee, still on five under par for the tournament - a well placed tee shot left a yardage of 135m for a solid gap wedge which was soon to be my shot of the week, spinning back to a foot from the cup. The tap in birdie got me to minus six and more importantly within four of the lead at the time. Little did I know what lay ahead at Lusaka’s seventeenth hole. The slight dog-leg right par four was only a drive and a sand wedge away, but sixty meters from the green awaited a fully grown tree towering a hundred

In the six years we’ve been playing at Lusaka Golf Club I have not witnessed as many balls ‘caught’ by “Chabala” as I have seen ‘tipped over the crossbar’ before finally coming to rest in some less than desirable locations. The third round of this year’s event however, promised something even more impressive for my approach shot.. I elected to hit a three wood from the tee box, in order to leave myself far enough back to launch a gap wedge safely over the goalie’s fingertips. Having executed phase one of “Bravo Mission 17”, I swung freely through the approach shot before gazing up to the unfortunate realization that the trajectory seemed to be slightly struggling on its launch objective. Another moment had arrived for the legend to reach out and deflect one more hopeful from its intended landing zone. He wasn’t done yet though. With the loss of at least one engine from impact, all hope soon plunged back to earth before bouncing twice and disappearing into a water hazard measuring no wider than a yard from bank-to-bank. “Chabala 1 - “Cairns” 0.
That double-bogey on 17 was eased slightly by a birdie on the final hole but the wreckage remained. It’s never easy walking off the course after a poor finish to an otherwise solid round but that’s simply the nature of the beast and also why we hate to love this game at times. My final round was too forgettable to mention and so I will spare you the gory details. On the up-side; Zambia Open meant three cuts made in a row and more importantly some positive steps back

in the right direction before our next two events in Swaziland this month. *Note to self; always be grateful for the small victories. Christofer Blomstrand, a young Swede ended up carding a ten under par final round to snatch victory from a prominent group of leaders, and seal a memorable couple of weeks for the Sunshine Tour North of the border.

American Stewart Cink, the 2009 Open champion, has announced he is taking a break from professional golf after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Cink, 42, a five-time Ryder Cup player, is currently ranked 208th in the world. “Since I was 15 years old, Lisa Cink has been my biggest supporter,” he wrote on Twitter. “It’s now time for me to return the favour. “In order to assist Lisa in meeting this challenge, I will be stepping away until circumstances improve for her.”

Marc Cayeux is back and we wish him all the best Marc Cayeux won twice in Zambia, and once each in Swaziland and Botswana, together with five other titles on the Sunshine Tour. However the 38-year-olds last tournament win was back in 2008 when he took the Nashua Masters at the Wild Coast Sun Country Club. Cayeux’s life took a dramatic turn when his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a police truck in 2010.The accident claimed the life of the policeman driving the truck and Cayeux, then 32, suffered dreadful injuries that required 27 operations and hours of physical therapy for more than five years just for him to get back to his feet, never mind playing golf. What makes Cayeux’s story more extraordinary is that even his doctors doubted if he would ever walk again, yet alone play golf. Despite the odds he is back on the Sunshine Tour and he made an emotional return at last

month’s Zimbabwe Open finishing with rounds of 70, 75, 79 & 72. Ben Hogan suffered a similarly horrific car crash in 1949 when the vehicle he and his wife were in collided headon with a bus. After a series of painful operations and life-threatening blood clots, Hogan was told he would never play golf again. A year later he won the US Open, and he went on to win five of the next seven majors he played. His story remains an inspiration for Cayeux in his comeback bid. “I believe if Hogan could do it then so can I,” said Cayeux. “People say, ‘Your body’s been through too much. You won’t make it.’ But if you just go on everyone’s word, you won’t accomplish anything. The only way to find out is to do it yourself. If golf’s not meant to be my body will tell me I can’t do it. But mentally I believe I can.”

Le Golf National adopts new Club Car fleet in preparation for The 2018 Ryder Cup Le Golf National, the 2018 Ryder Cup venue and home of the 100th Open de France, has renewed its longterm partnership with the world’s largest manufacturer of small-wheel electric vehicles until 2020 and is updating its Club Car fleet ahead of the biennial event. Through its French distributor, ORA Véhicules Electriques, Club Car will be supplying 50 new Precedent i3 vehicles in two phases, with most featuring the ground-breaking Visage system to provide golfers with precise shot and distance information, flyover video graphics and a live leaderboard during competitions. The connected mobile golf information system will also enable staff at the European Tour Destination to remotely control each car and optimise course maintenance with ‘no-drive’ zones, as well as monitor pace-of-play.

Golf4Mining Benefit & Exhibition Golf Tournament The inaugural Golf4Mining Benefit & Exhibition Golf Tournament will be held on the 30th September 2016 at the Kalahari Golf & Country Club, Kathu, Northern Cape.
This is a fundraising golf tournament and campaign to preserve mining industry jobs; also highlighting the importance of mines in their local communities; and promoting and developing the ‘local’ tourism and economies of these towns.
The initiative follows engagement with different mining stakeholders on a need to develop an annual corporate-sporting social investment vehicle that create an awareness about the importance of the mining industry in South Africa (and its resident towns); and benefits mining industry employees, the mining towns and mining businesses, and the image of the South African mining industry.
Golf4Mining is a national event which will be hosted annually on different golf courses (preference will be given to golf courses around mining towns) through a rotational bidding system. Courses/municipalities will bid to host the tournament annually. A board of trustees will be formed to oversee the distribution of grants.
The vision is to use golf as a sport to drive a social awareness, fund-raise for the Mining Jobs Fund, while simultaneously promoting the local tourism and businesses in mining towns.
Kalahari/Sishen Golf & Country club as the founding member of this tournament is the inaugural venue (sponsor). Gamagara Municipality is the hosting municipality partner.

• He was born in Dayton, Ohio on February 20 th 1915 and died in Ocala, Florida on September 1 st 1992. • His first name was Melvin but he was far better known by his nickname. • He won seven times on the PGA Tour, including one Major Championship, the 1954 PGA Championship. • In 1949, our mystery golfer played on the Ryder Cup team, winning his singles match against Sam King, 4 and 3, at Ganton Golf Club in Scarborough, England. He was playing-captain of the U.S. team in 1955, with a singles victory against Syd Scott (3 and 2) to his credit. • After turning 50, he made two official Senior PGA Tour appearances. He tied for 43rd at the 1981 Michelob Senior Classic and then tied for 40th in the same tournament the following year. • He served in the U.S. Army during World War 11.

Euphoria Golf Estate & Hydro out of Liquidation Euphoria Golf Estate & Hydro based in Limpopo has been purchased out of liquidation on the 15th of April by Sampada Private Equity. Euphoria becomes the first and currently only black owned golf estate in South Africa. Through its development, Euphoria will play a meaningful role in directly uplifting and changing the lives of people in Mookgophong and the greater Limpopo.

A further twenty million rand will be immediately invested into the Estate for general upgrades and maintenance. The main operations and estate will thus be closed for three months from the 1st June until the end of August. These refurbishments will take place on the clubhouse, the lodge rooms and all restaurants during this phase. The condition of the golf course will be significantly improved and will remain open for play with a limited half way house service.
Ian Leach, former CEO of Royal JHB & Kensington Golf Club and Euphoria Golf Estate & Hydro, will return as General Manager at Euphoria on the 1st May. Leach will work together with Kea Makoea who is Portfolio Manager at Sampada and recently elected as CEO of Euphoria Golf Estate & Hydro.
The word Euphoria will remain in the name of the Estate although the full name and corporate identity will change. The re-launch is due to take place on the 1st September. Bafedile Mafologele, CEO of Sampada Private Equity based in Johannesburg, was born and raised in Limpopo and is extremely excited about the purchase. “We see the huge potential in Euphoria growing and developing into one of the best estates in the country. Magersfontein Golf Estate is SA’s top club for CANSA The Northern Cape’s Magersfontein Memorial Golf Estate has for the second year in a row shattered the record of money raised by a single golf club in support of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge. This year the club raised a phenomenal R350 000 at its golf day, which formed part of the national club qualifiers for the Sanlam Cancer Challenge while at the same time raising funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). Last year the club was also South Africa’s best performing golf club in the Sanlam Cancer Challenge, raising a then record of R141 140. A total of 120 golfers took part in this year’s golf day, but the club also benefitted from generous donations by businesses in the community. Local advocate Lizanne van Niekerk is one of the main drivers of this charity golf day. Van Niekerk was inspired to become involved in the Sanlam Cancer Challenge when her father passed away from cancer, and she was also diagnosed with and survived cancer. “It was only after it became personal that I realised what a wonderful association CANSA is and how much they contribute to the lives of families and patients diagnosed with cancer,” said Van Niekerk. “With this golf day we as a club tried to make people aware of cancer

and motivate them to educate themselves about the different forms of cancer, and the prevention and symptoms associated with cancer. “I lost my father in December 2014. It was devastating for our family. By being part of the Magersfontein Sanlam Cancer Challenge I feel like I honour his memory by knowing that I play an active role in making a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families with fundraising to help advance cancer research, cancer prevention, cancer treatment and survivor programs.” The Sanlam Cancer Challenge has for 23 years been South African golf’s biggest charity drive in the fight against cancer. Annually, thousands of amateur golfers around the country come together to raise the kind of money that saw R3.5 million donated to CANSA in 2015. From March to July, the golfers compete in their local golf club’s Sanlam Cancer Challenge golf days, where the winners qualify for their respective regional finals. The winners of the regional finals, which will be played from July to August, will then qualify for the National Finals to be played on both the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Club courses at Sun City from 9-12 October.

Something Funny! The A to Z of Golf Backhander: A putt struck with the back of the putter blade. Sometimes golfers will do this in a casual fashion when the ball is very close to the hole. When they miss a backhander and it happens often - amateurs often smile and record their score as though they had made the putt. This is known as cheating.
Backswing: The part of the swing that takes place after the ball has been improperly addressed but before it has been sent to the wrong destination. Bag rat: Caddie. Bail out: What many golfers do to avoid trouble on the course. That is, they hit a shot in the direction opposite the trouble. If the trouble is on the right side, they bail out left. If the trouble is on the left side, they bail out right. This term can also be used to describe how a golfer (after calling in sick to work) exits his cart after seeing his boss approaching. Ball: A dimpled, rubber-covered, solid- or composite-cored, high-compression sphere with a weight of 1.62 ounces and a diameter of 1.68 inches that will enter a cup 4.25 inches in diameter and 4.0 inches deep after an average of 3.87 putts. Banana Ball: An especially curvaceous slice. A ball that starts to the right and continues to curve right until it nearly lands behind the golfer who hit it.

This shot is one reason why the word fore is heard on the golf course nearly as often as more notorious four-letter words. Barky:When one of your shots strikes a tree and you still make par for the hole, you have made a barky. Golfers often include a barky as one of their junk bets during a match.

Bogey: The number of strokes needed to finish a hole by a golfer of average skill and above-average honesty. Bogey train: A series of consecutive bogies. For professional golfers, the bogey train is a oneway ride to a job at a driving range.
Bent: The species of grass most often found on greens. Bindweed, Bog Grass, Bullrushes,
Bomb: A very long shot, usually a drive. John Daly hits bombs. Tiger Woods hits bombs. Most amateurs are content to hit firecrackers.
Bush: The species of grass among which the ball is most often found.
Break: 1. The shifting or changing of the direction of a putt caused by the slope or slant of a green. 2. The splitting or shattering of the shaft of a putter caused by the rage or wrath of a player.
Blind Hole: A hole whose green is not visible when an approach shot is made, thereby requiring a player to rely on senses other than sight, such as the unmistakable sound of an unseen golfer shouting after being struck by a ball, the distinct smell of trouble, the metallic taste of fear and the sudden touch of flu that dictates an immediate return to the clubhouse by way of the deep woods. Body English: Informal term for nervous leaning or twisting movements that players sometimes make, particularly while putting, to “persuade” the ball to go in a desired direction. If the ball fails to do so, these movements are often followed by a series of vulgar gestures and physical expressions of disgust referred to as body Spanish, body French or body Italian.
Broom: A term used to describe the putting stroke, since the motion involved in using a broom is similar. Many amateurs, though, are far more proficient at sweeping the garage than getting down in two. Bunt: A controlled shot struck more for accuracy than distance; usually follows a low trajectory and runs a long way after hitting the ground. Nick Faldo and Darren Clarke are two accomplished golfers who bunt the ball to avoid the wind or to make sure the ball finds the fairway.
