WINNING LETTER Dear Neville Thanks for a lovely magazine, your eye care article in the Sep/Oct edition was most informative and Paul Cuningham’s putting tips were very useful. I was though wondering if there is any way that you could get the television broadcasters, SuperSport, the PGA etc. to focus more attention on getting the public to repair pitch marks on greens. I see many players conscientiously repairing their own pitch marks, so why can’t the average player do the same? However it’s easy to find five or ten unrepaired pitch marks on most greens on most golf courses today. The only way to change people’s behaviour is to show the public what their role models do and thus give them an example they will want to follow. Perhaps the broadcasters could have a demonstration during one their breaks where a professional the public admires can be seen fixing his or her pitch marks and reminding everyone

that this is a basic courtesy to other players and also critical to maintaining the condition of the course. Regards Lance Price
Dear Lance This is a very good suggestion, we have ourselves in the past had articles on repairing pitch marks etc. and it would be good to see more of this type of thing on TV. I have seen some of this on our local golf programmes but for sure this is something that needs to get more coverage as a lot of golf courses around the country suffer as a result of pitch marks that have not been repaired properly. PGA NEWS PGA OF SA TEES OFF NEW PROGRAMME
PGA of SA tees off new programme to drive revenue at golf clubs
G
Golf clubs worldwide are looking at ways to meet the demands of the difficult economic climate, and the PGA of South Africa has devised a strategy to help local clubs create more value for their members and attract new ones. Over the next 12 to 24 months, the PGA of South Africa will implement its new “Valuing the PGA Professional” programme at golf facilities around South Africa. The programme - which has the full support of the Club Manager Association of South Africa (CMASA) and Golf RSA - is aimed at increasing rounds of golf, membership numbers and revenue at golf facilities; and developing golfers along their pathway in the game. According to Ivano Ficalbi, the Chief Executive of the PGA of South Africa, the programme is based on the success of similar programmes implemented by the PGA of America and the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland. “The PGA of South Africa firmly believes that the golf industry needs to focus on implementing positive strategies to bring new golfers to the game, past golfers back to the game and to encourage current golfers to play more golf,” says Ficalbi.

“The development of golfers along the golfing pathway from beginner to recreational to engaged and hopefully committed requires focused attention, and the PGA professional is the key component in this player development strategy.” The programme will initially focus on the PGA professionals, but has been structured to incorporate club managers and club volunteers in the second phase. “Ultimately, the programme will provide the golf facility with an improved understanding of how the PGA professional is integral in the revenue generation at the golf facility through the professional’s engagement with the golfer and member,” says Ficalbi. The main focus of the programme is to improve communication and joint strategies between the PGA professional and the golf facility for the mutual benefit of both. The PGA of South Africa has also partnered with the PeforMAX group to increase accountability and incorporate a review of the golf facility by its members in order to create a benchmark within the golf industry to drive best practice and growth. “We are really excited about this new strategy and its ability to get all the relevant role players working together to help drive growth and revenue at our golf clubs,” says Ficalbi.

Tiger Woods undergoES aNOTHER procedure

or the second time in less than two months and third time in just over 18 months, Tiger Woods has undergone a procedure on his back.
The latest one took place end of October in Park City, Utah, and was done to relieve discomfort, Woods said on his website last month. It was performed by Dr. Charles Rich, the same neurosurgeon who handled each of Woods’ first two microdiscectomy surgeries in the spring of 2014 and then again on Sept. 19 of this year.

here are so many golfers who do not understand the importance of good basic fundamentals in this game - even some great players! ;-) It all starts with a sound grip & if placed incorrectly onto the club will cause the golfer to compensate through impact with their hands, potentially disconnecting their arms away from their body in the backswing or through swing & then start finding alternative swing paths for a successful outcome. As much as these manipulations do work a majority of the time, there are umpteen moments that will impact on a season, a phase of events or even just that one particular shot that would have made all the difference, had we just stayed connected! If you are battling inconsistencies with strike errors or even directional control, then try these all time favourite swing drills I use to tighten your game up in a positive way :-)

The ‘wood cover’ drill
In this article we focus primarily on right side connection but in up coming articles I will discuss the importance of left side connections as well. 1. For those of you who battle to soften your right elbow in towards the right side of your trunk, this is already a great drill for you! Softening your right elbow into your side makes it easier to square up your shoulder-line to your target-line & helps your club head taper back along good path & plane lines. It also aids in better club head rotation up into the top of your backswing. 2. Keeping you connected right through the transition of your backswing creates less moving parts, less can go wrong & a more consistent, shallower approach through impact is achieved. You also get better flight on the ball, optimized spin rates for the various clubs in your set & launch lines that are better directed down your target line. 3. Being connected through impact allows us to maintain better face angle control & feel a more passive trailing club head through impact - more commonly known as the ‘late hit’! This is the mark of great players who don’t release the club to soon & trap the ball nicely through impact :-) 4. Remember not to hold onto the wood cover in your through swing. We don’t have to compact it! We need extension & commitment towards your target. Besides, if it stays under your arm through to the finish you would have held onto your follow through, thinning or topping the ball :-( Swinging over-thetop or left across your your target line would also see you retain the cover under your arm.

2. Softening both arms into the sides of your body sets you up for better rotation of the club head on both sides of your swing. It’s great for backswing length control & keeps your arms moving in-sync with your torso. Once again less moving parts - less can go wrong ;-) 3. Having your path & plane lines improved through impact will improve your consistency. Without the ability to disconnect your arms from your body, better body mobility back & through (rotation) can be felt & achieved. Being able to use your body more effectively will give you more power with the ability to use your hands less actively down the line.

2. Players that get to steep in the backswing or even cross the line at the top, pointing the club towards the right of target, would benefit greatly with this drill. Improved backswing positions make for effective impact positions & give us a more efficient power supply through the ball.

Our golfing forefathers have done all the hard work for us, spending hours & hours toiling in the dirt & digging out the answers - till their fingers bled! ;-) Connection is a major key towards achieving your golfing goals. Go on, give it a try, simplify your move, make it more efficient & effective by getting your body more into action. Through this process it’s easier to learn to keep your hands quiet through the impact zone... See you on the other side of the divide - give us a call to get you better connected in the golf industry...

By softening your forearms inward you are as close as you can get towards achieving one leaver for your backswing & through swing - less moving parts ;-) Keeping the triangle formed by your forearms & shoulders at address consistent throughout your swing will keep your club head rotation consistent back & through your swing. This is probably my favourite drill of all three but is definitely to be lead in sequence of the previous two drills.

3. The size of the forearm triangle should never change back & through the swing. Players with poor mobility & flexibility in their upper back, shoulder area, often need to disconnect their arms from their bodies halfway back & halfway through in their swings. Steep backswings & through-swings are most visible with this. Hooded or shut club face angles back & open or held follow throughs can be in evidence for power leaks that go high right or low pulled hooks left. Two distinct opposite errors but either can be experienced with the ‘disconnected swing’!

The 17-year-old Bryanston golfer lagged a stroke behind first round pacesetter Woo Ju Son, but finishes three strokes clear of Eagle Canyon’s Son, who signed off with a 72.
Meanwhile Samu started the final round well off the pace after an opening 74, but the 16-year-old Ruimsig golfer rallied with a superb 69 to claim sole third on 143. Minette Oliver from Eastern Province finished in fourth on 146 with rounds of 72 and 74. Telfer made her first visit to the winner’s circle in the Free State and Northern Cape Championship in April and claimed her second podium finish at the Southern Cape Championship in August. The victory in Worcester followed on the heels of an eight stroke victory in the Ekurhuleni Championship a week ago. “I am really happy to be back in winning form, but to be honest, I’m far more pleased with my scoring that collecting trophies,” Telfer said.

Central Gauteng lifts record 27th SA IPT title
The side thumped Boland 7.5 – 4.5, beat Ekurhuleni 7.5 – 4.5 and defeated Southern Cape 8 – 4 to reach the final round but despite a two point lead, the eight man side took nothing for granted. Showing the same fighting spirit that carried them to the winner’s circle in Cape Town last year, they took the attack to Western Province and won two games and halved another to lead the Foursomes 2.5 – 1.5. Andi Dill, Jason Viljoen and Darin de Smidt burst from the blocks and quickly racked up three points in the Singles to give the team some breathing room.

welve months after they marched to an unbeaten victory at Westlake GC, Central Gauteng was in ascendancy again in the 55th South African Inter-Provincial Championship, sponsored by Tempest, at Glendower GC The defending champions put an exclamation mark behind another unbeaten run to claim the union’s record 27th victory in the prestigious annual team event when they staved off a resuscitated Western Province in a closely fought final round tussle to triumph 8 – 4. “The team performed from day one and stuck to our game plan,” said team manager Jaco du Plessis. “I demanded perfection from this team and they all stood up to be counted. This marks the first time since 2005 / 2006 that we successfully defended the title. “Winning all our matches for two successive years speaks volumes about the character of these players. This might be a young team, but their grit and determination was unparalleled for five days and they richly deserve to take this cup home.” Central Gauteng launched their title defence with a 7 – 5 result against Eastern Province.

The 16-year-old from Waterkloof produced a pair of birdies at the last three holes at Royal Cape GC to seal a two stroke victory one-over-par 222. Du Toit opened with a five-over-par 79 and was well off the pace from first round leader Katia Schaff from Western Province, but an even par 74 in the second round boosted the Pretoria CC player within three shots of three-way tie at the top. Berger all made bids for the title, but it was Du Toit who most successfully navigated the stiff breeze on Sunday afternoon. “The Ackerman Championship is has been around for a very long time and it’s a very special tournament for all of us,” said Du Toit after receiving the Gus Ackerman Trophy from tournament sponsor, Jonathan Ackerman. “I have been knocking for a while now and came close in the Nomads SA Girls Championship, so you can only imagine my delight. What an honour it is for me to win my first provincial title in such a prestigious and historic tournament.”

SA marches to eighth AAGTC victory

ade Buitendag, Aubrey Beckley, Jason Smith and Andre Nel mounted a spirited final round challenge to chase down South Africa’s third successive title and eighth victory in the Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship in Kenya last month.
South Africa lifted the title in the inaugural edition of the prestigious biennial event in 2001 and claimed subsequent victories in Botswana (2003), Uganda (2005), Namibia (2007), Egypt (2011) and Swaziland in 2013. The 2015 team extended the country’s proud record with a resounding 18 stroke victory at Limuru CC. The South Africans lagged two strokes off the pace from Zimbabwe, but Southern Cape’s Jade Buitendag fired a superb 67 to put the defending champions on the attack. Fellow Kenako Academy member Andre Nel boosted their momentum with an equally impressive 68, while Gauteng North’s Jason Smith and Aubrey Beckley from North West sealed their podium finish with a pair of 73s. Their combined 208 was the lowest round of this year’s championship and took South Africa’s winning tally to 872. Kenya closed with 218 to take second and finished two strokes ahead of Zimbabwe, who carded 230. “Jade had two rough days, but all the work he put into his game on the range on Tuesday and Wednesday paid handsome dividends for the team,” said TuksGolf Academies head coach

KZN and EP push the boat out in Buffalo City K waZulu-Natal celebrated their third South African Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial Championship victory with an undefeated performance at East London GC, while Eastern Province landed promotion in spectacular style last month.
A-SECTION It was touch and go in their final clash against Western Province, but KZN team manager Neil Campion’s warriors threw everything they had left into the final skirmish and stayed the course to triumph 6.5 – 5.5. “This is an incredible celebration for the whole squad,” said an elated Campion. “We never took anything for granted. The players worked exceptionally hard for this final win, right down to the last putt in the last game out to pull this through. “It came down to the last three games and I can tell that all six players left nothing out on the course,” Campion said.

Class act Konzani wins Indwe SA Senior Stroke Play “This is just incredible,” said the delighted champion. “This is the one I’ve been wanting to win since I joined the senior ranks and I was up there from start to finish. It was a really long week and the wind on the Tuesday knocked the stuffing out of us, but I knuckled down, stuck to my game plan and pulled it through.” Konzani describes the Indwe Risk Services SA Senior Amateur Stroke Play victory as the biggest achievement of career.

avid Konzani claimed the Indwe Risk Services SA Senior Amateur Stroke Play Championship in swashbuckling style at Humewood GC at the end of October. Having gained a considerable advantage earlier rounds of 67, 70 and 74, the 55-year-old Port Elizabeth golfer continued in the same vein in the final round to score a runaway 12-shot victory at his home course. Showing no sign of nerves, Konzani overcame a stumble around the turn with a hat-trick of birdies down the straight to post a joint best-of-the-day one under 71. His wire-to-wire victory at six-under-par 282 left him well clear of second-placed Brian Mamphies from Parow GC, who closed with a 75, while William Skinner and 2014 champion Mellette Hendrikse from Gauteng North finished third on 295 with respective rounds of 72 and 71. Konzani signalled his potential to win the flagship tournament this year by rising to the number two spot in the senior rankings with a victory, three runner-up and four top five finishes in eight starts. Now, having conquered the country’s greatest links, the diminutive Konzani ended Hendrikse’s two year reign at the top.

“I’ve always thought of this event as my Major and when I saw all the people around the green at 18, it really hit home how big this is,” he said. “Helping Eastern Province to win promotion at the SA Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial last week was unbelievable, but this really is a cherry on top. Swaziland Driving tourism through golf! This past September we were honoured to be hosted in Swaziland by the Swaziland Tourism Authority STA (our last visit being in 2013). Our primary objective was to cover the Kings Cup Golf Tournament and to highlight the fact that Swaziland is a very appealing destination for a golfing holiday, but at the same time we got to experience some of the other activities that this beautiful country has to offer.
The Kings Cup Golf Tournament; Building a better future through golf! The King’s Cup Golf Tournament is an annual event held in Swaziland in honour of His Majesty King Mswati III (who is both the Patron & Host). It is the largest golfing event in the country and has been running for the past eleven years. The event attracts business people from neighbouring countries, mainly South Africa. The tournament came about as the translation of His Majesty’s 2004 Job Creation Summit aimed at resuscitating the country’s economic performances, through foreign direct investment and sport tourism. This year saw the tournament being incorporated into the Sunshine Big Easy Tour which was played over the Thursday 3rd September

The 19-year-old Wanna Be a Champion golfer produced a masterclass in target golf and surrendered just three shots at the Royal Swazi Sun Country Club for successive 67s. He won by three strokes from Gideon Pienaar and Riekus Nortje on 10-under-par 134.

His Majesty King Mswati III officially opened the Pro-Am event on Friday afternoon, playing four holes with some of the major sponsors (the title sponsors being MTN, Nedbank, Royal Swazi Spa, Swaziland Electricity Company and Swaziland Posts & Telecommunications Corporation). We were fortunate enough to accompany him and it must be said that he strikes the ball fairly well considering that he rarely plays more than once a year due to his busy schedule.
There was rain in the air on Saturday morning and although not ideal for golf it was most welcomed by most. Louis & I hopped on a cart and drove around chatting to the players who by all accounts had a great time.

The winners of the Pro-Am received their prizes at the gala dinner that was held on Saturday evening. The dinner, hosted by the King was a lavish affair with many dignitaries in attendance. The King thanked the sponsors and organisers and said “Our national goal is to use golf to promote tourism and investment in the kingdom. Golf and business are not only intertwined, but also well recognised as a valuable tool for networking.” “Golf also allows the opportunity to create stronger relationships with clients or co-workers in the leisurely pace of the sport. The combination of golf tourism and investments can certainly enrich our economy to levels that help us address our social and economic development challenges.” Theo Manyama and his son Ludwick, who have both recently been in America, were also there and Ludwick had us in stitches with his account of trying to find a Swazi wife. All in all, I would say that the 2015 Kings Cup was a resounding success. King Mswati III has big plans for the future of this tournament and with the enthusiasm and commitment that was evidenced one can only see a bright future ahead.

he PGA TOUR and Microsoft have entered a three-year relationship that will focus on utilizing Microsoft solutions to create new ways for fans, players and broadcasters to engage with the PGA TOUR. The solutions will be designed to instantaneously mine the TOUR’s vast video library and statistical information to enhance and simplify the way data is interpreted, providing fans, players and commentators new and engaging ways to access insight as never before.

Hibiscus Coast welcomes SA Women’s Open return

he 2015 South African Women’s Open is heading to the KwaZulu-Natal’s Hibiscus Coast for a fourth successive year thanks to the unwavering support of the Hibiscus Coast Municipality. The 54-hole tournament, sanctioned by the WPGA of South Africa, will carry a purse of R250,000 and will be played at San Lameer Country Club from 29 November to 1 December. It will also be the first counting event on the 2016 Sunshine Ladies Tour and Chase to the Investec Cup for Ladies. “Hibiscus Coast Municipality has been a key contributor in the resurgence of South African women’s professional golf since the SA Women’s Open returned to the national schedule in 2012,” said tournament promoter Lesley Copeman, of World Sports Promotions. “Hibiscus Coast Municipality mayor, Councillor Nomusa Mqwebu, has been a fervent supporter of women’s golf and through the South African Women’s Open, has launched the

haun Norris overcame tough final round conditions to break through for a maiden Asian Tour victory in the US$500,000 Yeangder Tournament Players Championship last month. The 33-year-old Lumenrock Sport golfer defied swirling winds to reel in five birdies in the first seven holes at the Linkou International G&CC. Norris held out for a four-under-par 68 to defeat overnight leader Miguel Tabuena of the Philippines by two strokes. The 2015 IGT Tour Wanna Be A Champion Academy winner triumphed on 12-under-par 204, finishing four strokes ahead of Lumenrock Sport stable mate Keith Horne, who shared the bus at eight under with Giwhan Kim of Korea, Hsu Hao-sheng of Chinese Taipei, and Thai duo Panuphol Pittayarat and Natipong Srithong. “Words can’t describe how I feel with this win,” said Norris, who earned his card at Qualifying School earlier this year. “I’ve been playing well as of late and I wanted to win something in Asia so this is a dream come true. “We always try to better ourselves in golf. The goal is to travel the world and compete against other players. The quality on the Asian Tour is phenomenal. The players are so good.

“For me to accomplish what I have done is just great. I always joke with my family and friends that I play better in the worst conditions. I think it makes me concentrate more. I probably focus more. I only realised how the scoreboard looked after 17. I was a little bit nervous heading into 18 and it was just a bad chip that caused me to drop a shot.” The victory vaulted Norris to 21st on the Asian Tour Order of Merit.

Mossel Bay’s golf property values on the rise

Banks have also become more lenient in mortgage lending.” Mossel Bay Tourism’s Marcia Holm said that the town itself is growing in popularity as an investment destination. “It isn’t hard to see why,” she said. “It’s well managed, safe and clean, and it offers excellent infrastructure (including private schools and the best-equipped hospital in the Western Cape outside of the Cape Town Metropole) - and an unparalleled lifestyle that anyone would envy.” Kaaiman said that buyers who’ve shown interest in Mossel Bay include retirees, married couples with young children, young single professionals, and foreign residents alike. “They’re all buying for similar reasons,” he said. “They want security for their families; they enjoy golf, nature and other recreational activities; and they’ve seen how the demand for this type of housing has created investment opportunities that will appreciate in value or generate good rental income over the medium and longer term - all of which they can find here in Mossel Bay.”

Insight on raising a prodigy who is anything but at home.
A
lot has been made about a new generation in golf -- the last seven PGA TOUR events dating back to the end of last season have been won by players in their 20s. Headlining that group this year was Jordan Spieth, with two majors, a FedExCup and a spot atop the Official World Golf Rankings, among numerous other accolades. Just as much has been made about Spieth’s behavior and personality off the course. He’s polite, low key and despite having cashed north of $22 million in just on-course earnings this year, doesn’t seem to have changed all that much. Why not? His mom Christine recently opened up to Purpose2Play.com, a website that focuses on the positive influence families have on today’s rising young stars, and offered some terrific insight. “At the end of the summer, Jordan asked us, ‘Do I have to do this next year, because I think I’d rather be out there,’ and he pointed to the golf course,” Christine Spieth told the website. “Remember, he’s eight years old, and the kids he sees out there are 14 or 15. “My husband, Shawn, had taken the boys to the driving

range because he liked to go, but neither of us were big golfers. I played basketball, Shawn played baseball; golf was a hobby but never a real sport on our radar.” Still, both of Spieth’s parents thought their eldest son would end up playing baseball in college -- he was a lefty pitcher on a travel team and had also played quarterback as a kid. The lure of golf was too great for Spieth, however, and he eventually gave up everything else to focus on golf. The rest, of course, is history. As for what has kept Spieth fairly grounded during his meteoric rise, it again traces back to family. He has a special needs sister and he doesn’t get special treatment during his visits home. “I think the reason that Jordan has stayed so grounded is that when he’s at home, he’s never been ‘the phenomenal Jordan.’ He’s Steven’s and Ellie’s brother, our son. It has never been all about Jordan,” Christine Spieth said on Purpose2Play.com. “You’re not going to find a lot of golf trophies in our house. We do have his John Deere trophy here because he doesn’t want to fill his house with golf trophies. That’s the place he goes to get away from golf, to just be a regular person.”

Verhit jou oond tot 180 °C. Verhit die olie in ’n pan en braai uie tot sag en effens bruin. Voeg die kerriepoeier, borrie en appelkooskonfyt by en braai liggies vir sowat 2 minute. Haal die pan van die hitte af. Meng die uiemengsel en die res van die bestanddele behalwe die lourierblare by die Maalvleis. Meng goed en geur met sout en varsgemaalde swartpeper. Plaas die mengsel in ’n oondbak van sowat 30 x 25 cm en druk die lourierblare bo-op. Sit in die warm oond en bak vir 15 minute. Klits intussen die eiers en Joghurt saam en geur met sout en swartpeper. Haal die bobotie uit die oond en gooi die eiermengsel oor. Plaas terug en bak verder vir nog 25 minute. Wenk: Sit voor met Geelrys & n Kombinasie van Perske Blatjan, n Tamatie, Uie & Komkommer Salsa & Piesang gerol in klapper vlokkies.

So wat nog; dalk ‘n wen in een van die laaste paar toernooie van die jaar? Ek dink beslis dit is moontlik.

Greg was ook op die sak by die Presidents Beker en hy was net vol lof vir die manier hoe Louis en Branden (Grace) hulle opposisie kaf gedraf het. unshine Ladies Tour winner Stacy Bregman and Stage 1 medallist Bertine Strauss are heading for the Final Stage of the LPGA Qualifying School in December after both players made the grade in the Stage II qualifier last month.
Ladies European Tour winner Connie Chen and fellow South African Ulrika van Niekerk both failed to make the cut, however, all the players who missed the cut but completed 72 holes automatically received Symetra Tour status for 2016.
The South African pair struggled at the start of the 72hole examination, but rallied over the weekend to tie for 28th on nine-over-par 297. Bregman carded rounds of 75, 80, 72 and 70, while Strauss posted 75, 78, 71 and 71 to finish in the bus alongside Ladies European Tour winner Rebecca Artis and Symertra Tour champion Breanna Elliott from Australia, as well as Fiona Puyo, Budsabakorn Sukapan from Thailand, Norway’s Caroline Martens and American Ginger Howard. A total of 85 players from the 195-strong field qualified for Final Stage and Bregman and Strauss will join compatriot Ashleigh Simon at the LPGA International Golf Course from 2 – 6 December. Simon, a two-time Ladies European Tour winner and four-time Sunshine Ladies Tour champion, kept her card for next 2016 season, but hopes to improve her ranking for 2016 with a top 20 finish at Final Stage. Only players in the top 20 finish receive Category 12 cards for the LPGA Tour, while the players that finish between 21 and 45 will gain conditional cards.

Rule changes for 2016
E
very four years the R&A and USGA update the Rules of Golf. Last month they released the changes, which would be effective from January 2016 and there are four that people will be focusing on. 1. Rule 14-1b – This rule relates to the “anchoring of the putter” against your body. This will no longer be allowed. Although you can still use a long putter, it may not rest against your body. The penalty is loss of hole in match play and 2 shots in stroke play. 2. Rule 18-2b – The clarity of HD television has forced a change to this rule. Previously a player was penalized for his ball moving after address even if the player could not see it with his naked eye. Now a player will only be penalized if he caused the ball to move.

3. Rule 6-6d – In future a player will not be disqualified if he hands in his card and is then penalized for something that happened during the round. The penalty will be added to the score on the card. In all other cases in which a player returns a score lower than he actually had, the penalty will continue to be disqualification. 4. Rule 14-3 – deals with “artificial devices”. In future if a golfer used an artificial device such as a distance finder in a competition where they were not allowed, he/she will not be disqualified, but rather, the penalty in strokeplay will be 2 shots and in match play, loss of hole. However, the penalty for subsequent breach of rule will continue to be disqualification.

I was born in a small town in the Free State, Virginia and I went to school in town as well; Primary school Virginia Volkskool and High school Hentie Cilliers. 2. Did you play for SA schools? No. 3. Who did you first play provincial rugby for? My first game was for the Griffons at u/19 level. 4. What made you move to Durban? I met with Dick Muir at OR Tambo airport and he gave me an opportunity to move down on a trial basis for a month and I have not been able to leave since then. 5. What do you think of next years expanded 18-team format for Super Rugby and can the Sharks regain their past form and be contenders for the title? Super Rugby is the toughest competition on the calendar and the format will be different next year but it will be new to all the teams. We are working extremely hard in the off season right now not just to be contenders in the competition but to bring some pride back! 6. What has been your most memorable moment on the rugby field? In 2009, making my Springbok

debut and representing my country will always be right up there but the most memorable one must be winning the Currie Cup with the Sharks in 2008. 7. You spent some time last year playing for Japanese Top League team Toyota Verblitz, can you tell us a bit about that? One word, Different!!! Toyota is one of the best companies in the world and they have a great rugby side and to see how they mix the two, taking a bit of both is amazing. It was a great experience for me and my family. Not just the rugby but the lifestyle and culture as well the Japanese who are phenomenal people. 8. Given your experience in Japan where you overly surprised at Japan beating the Springboks in their opening game of RWC? To be honest I think they surprised everybody! The Japanese have a massive work ethic, whether it is with the company or on the rugby field they work extremely hard and they are developing as a rugby Royal Ascot nation. In the bigger picture the win over the Boks is massive for them in hosting the World Cup in 2019 and for Super Rugby next year. 9. Craig Joubert has been taken to the cleaners in some quarters for his referring of the Scotland/ Australia quarter final at RWC. What did you think of the whole affair? Craig is a great ref and has been the best in the world for a couple of years. In my experience with him in the games I was involved in and he was in charge he was always calm and cool headed and saw the game from a player’s point of view. He

• Your ideal fourball would be? Will Ferrell, Robert Downey Jr, Kate Beckinsale and myself. Hopefully none of them can play too well, so I can win a round.
• Your favourite golfer is? Tiger Woods, as he is the one that I have followed since I was a kid.

An American born in Springfield, Missouri he won three majors in his career, the last of which occurred only months before his untimely death at the age of 42. He was supposed at the time to have the biggest wardrobe of all professional golfers. He won the PGA Championship in1989 and the U.S. Open in 1991 and 1999. He represented the United States on 5 Ryder Cup teams and was known for his patriotic passion for the event, once saying of his European opponents, “On paper, they should be caddying for us.” He was a favorite of photographers because of his ivy caps and patterned pants, which were a cross between plus fours and knickerbockers a throwback to the once-common place golfing “uniform.” The NFL paid our mystery golfer to wear the colours of the nearest pro football team in the area of the tournament to help promote the NFL.

Rory McIlroy considered quitting European Tour

ory McIlroy spent a fortnight in the air flying to and from tournaments in the past year, touching down at nearly 120 airports along the way. Although this is time usually spent in the most cosseted of cabins, it also explains why he has no problem with Paul Casey potentially turning his back on the Ryder Cup. Indeed, McIlroy admits that he has considered following the Englishman’s example and resigning from the European Tour to help make his schedule easier to manage. “I’ve definitely contemplated it,” the 26-year-old told BBC Sport. “You know, getting sick of the travel, getting sick of having to cross back and forth between tours.

“The players on the European Tour have had endless dialogue about reducing the number of tournaments that you need to play.” Players are required to compete in at least 13 events a year to retain their European Tour membership and remain in the Race to Dubai, althoughMcIlroy has been given special dispensation this year because of an ankle injury suffered in July, meaning he will play 12. Only European Tour golfers are eligible to play for the continent in the Ryder Cup and Casey, who has a oneyear-old son and lives in the United States, will sacrifice a probable place at Hazeltine next year if he does not renew the membership he gave up in January.

Something Funny! Ladies Tee A man was addressing the ball when an announcement came over the loud-speaker: “Will the gentleman on hole number one please not hit from the Ladies’ tee box.” The man backs away, a little distracted, then approaches his ball again. As he does, the same announcement comes over the loud-speaker: “Will the gentleman on hole number one please not hit from the Ladies’ tee box.” The man is getting irritated now, and after backing away from his shot, approaches his ball one more time. This time the announcement came: “We really need the gentleman on hole number one to move off of the Ladies’ tee box!” To which the man turns around and yells: “And I really need the announcer to shut up and let me play my second shot!”
Dear Abby, I’ve never written to you before, but I really need your advice. I have suspected for some time now that my wife has been cheating on me. The usual signs. Phone rings but if I answer, the caller hangs up. My wife has been going out with “the girls” a lot recently although when I ask their names she always says, “Just some friends from work, you don’t know them.” I always try to stay awake to look out for her coming home, but I usually fall asleep. Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my wife. I think deep down I just didn’t want to know the truth, but last night she went out again and I decided to really check on her. Around midnight, I decided to hide in the garage behind my golf clubs so I could get a good view of the whole street when she arrived home from a night out with “the girls”. It was at that moment, crouching behind my clubs, that I noticed that the graphite shaft on my driver appeared to have a hairline crack right by the club head. Is this something I can fix myself or should I take it back to the pro shop where I bought it? Signed, Perplexed
“It’s a new program,” the club starter explained. “All the seniors we hired live at the old folks’ home down the road. But they are in terrific physical shape, and we’re just trying to help them earn a little extra money, get some exercise and stay young.” Jim showed up at his golf club one day to discover that the club had begun a program using seniors as caddies. One day a week, the club replaced all its regular caddies with senior citizens. “It’s a new program,” the club starter explained. “All the seniors we hired live at the old folks’ home down the road. But they are in terrific physical shape, and we’re just trying to help them earn a little extra money, get some exercise and stay young.” That sounded like a noble idea to Jim, so he set off to the first tee with his 75-year-old caddie. When Jim finished up on No. 18, the starter asked him how it went. “Well,” Jim said, “my caddie was nice guy and he tried really hard. But his eyes were bad. He just couldn’t see far enough to help me find all my shots.” The starter was apologetic. “I’m sorry. Come back next week and I promise I’ll get you a caddie who can see just fine.” A week later, Jim returned. He headed to the first tee, and this time his caddie was 80 years old. Jim was a little worried, but his concerns disappeared after his first tee shot. It was booming drive, around 300 yards but a little offline. “Do you have it?” Jim asked, “I lost it in the sun.” “Don’t worry,” the elderly caddie replied, “I saw exactly where it landed.” Jim and his caddie started up the fairway in the direction where the old man said he’d seen the ball. But Jim started to get a little worried when they began wandering a bit, the caddie seemingly unsure of the exact location. “What’s the matter?” Jim asked, “I thought you said you saw where it went.” “Oh, yes sir, I saw exactly where the ball went,” the caddie replied.
