WINNING LETTER Dear Editor Respect and integrity are two of the fundamental pillars of golf. As golfers, we most often play without the supervision of an official or umpire. It’s one of the few sports where it’s up to the individual player to have respect for the game by keeping an honest score. This same personal accountability extends to golf course maintenance. It’s our responsibility to respect and care for the turf by taking the necessary steps to prevent damage and to repair any harm that may have been caused to the course during a round.
Divot repair is an extension of the respect and integrity expected from golf players. It’s about respecting the golf course, respecting our fellow players, and having the integrity to fix any damage that was caused or encountered during play.
What’s the one similarity between our golf game and that of Ernie Els, Adam Scott, Rory McIlroy? We all create divots when we play. This often happens on the fairway when playing a shot and the club cuts out a piece of grass during the swing, sending the turf flying through the air. This damages the playing surface, creating small holes that can interfere with play.

Taking a divot isn’t a sign of a poor shot. You can hit a beautiful shot and still create a divot. It’s how you handle the divot that matters. Creating a divot during play is an unavoidable part of golf. It’s expected and it’s not poor etiquette when done unintentionally during responsible play. However, it’s our responsibility as players to repair our divots immediately.

Repairing divots is good for the course, good for fellow players, and good for the game. Let’s be responsible golfers and take care of any damage we cause or encounter during a round. A little effort goes a long way in preserving this great game!

“CADDIE FACTOR” The right caddie can improve a golfer’s performance by 30%. Double Open Champion Padraig Harrington credits his caddie with winning him The Open.
A
good quality caddie relationship can improve a golfer’s performance by 30%, according to new research published today by Loughborough University. The research commissioned ahead of this year’s Open Championship by Open patron HSBC, identifies a clear “link between the golfer-caddie relationship and performance success” and concludes that the right caddie can make a difference of “30% or more”. The report, titled “Understanding the Quality and Functions of the Golfer-Caddie Relationship”, also revealed that: • The higher the level (of golf ), the stronger the relationship • Long-term partnerships tend to be more successful and desirable • Winning strengthens the bond between player and caddie

• Two-way communication ensures the maintenance of quality golfer/caddie relationships • The 4 Cs of Closeness, Commitment, Complementarity and Co-Orientation define a quality player-caddie relationship The research was conducted by Dr Sophia Jowett, Director of Research Degrees at Loughborough University’s School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences. She said: “There is, of course, anecdotal evidence which highlights the importance of the player-caddie relationship but we wanted to scientifically evaluate the caddie contribution – I guess you could call it the ‘Caddie Factor’. “Based on the feedback from our participants, the right caddie can improve a golfer’s performance by 30% or more and the relationship is critical to success – golfers highlighted how caddies energised, motivated and supported them. All participants agreed that the relationship is stronger and better at the highest level of performance.

NE WS CLIP “Both caddies and golfers felt that the length of good quality relationships can aid their purpose and bring about performance success and acknowledged the best players tended to have longer relationships with their caddie. “A total of 67% of golfers and caddies felt that performance accomplishments can promote the relational bonds between golfers and caddies – strengthen the relationship and its longevity. “The 4 Cs are fundamental to a successful partnership – Closeness includes trust, appreciation and respect; Commitment is about long-term orientations; Complementarity is about responsiveness, openness and acceptance of roles; and Co-Orientation includes shared knowledge and understanding. Not surprisingly, communication is very important and most disagreements revolved around golf strategies such as club selection and shot decisions.” Double Open Champion Padraig Harrington is in no doubt of the value of the right caddie. The Irishman, who won the Claret Jug in 2007 and 2008, said: “It’s simple. In 2007 my caddie Ronan Flood won me The Open. “On the Sunday I hit my tee shot in the water on 18 and was despondent, I then hit my third shot into the water again and felt like I’d lost. I had to walk about 150 yards for my next shot and Ronan was talking to me, coming out with all the clichés about what to do next – for the first 50 yards I wanted to strangle him, for the next 50 yards I started listening to him and for the last 50 yards I believed him. I was in the zone, then out of it and then back in it again – that really doesn’t happen very often. “In that moment of time I do believe Ronan made the difference – with any other caddie I would have thought I had lost The Open but my caddie believed in me. It’s all about creating your own reality when you’re on the golf course. “The Number One criterion is matching the personality – it’s about getting on the same wavelength and the caddie’s opinion is a moderation of your opinion. The ideal situation is that we are both thinking the same thing and we both think it should

be the same club – if not, he has to say it. It is harder to hinge and especially harder to unhinge your wrists with this stronger grip position, shown here in frame 3. A: Get the ball back in your stance!
Placing the ball perpendicular to your back shoe will set you up to strike it in the descending part of your swing arc. We want the bottom-out-point “BOP” of your pendulum just ahead of the ball when chipping so you can strike it first time, every time and the turf afterwards. This is how the Pro’s get that “check and trickle” type action that everyone is looking for. Obviously clean, new grooves on a Cleveland wedge and a premium golf ball like the Srixon Z-star or XV will add to the action with positive results. Lean into it! Set your weight more onto your front foot (left side for right-handers), this will stabilize your body far better throughout your action and help keep your ball in a more consistent point in your strike. The narrowest stance in the game! Don’t stand too wide. The wider you stand the steeper your angle of attack will be down through your strike and your ball flight will come out too low, too strongly onto the green. Space, the size of your club head between your shoes will suffice to facilitate just the right angle of attack down through the strike.

Imagine you’re holding a tube of tooth paste, you’re not going to lose control of it or have it fall out of your hands and you’re not going to squeeze any toothpaste out of it either! Keep your rhythm consistent making sure your arm swing motion is the same back and through. Because your club head is set behind your hands and maintained there throughout your stroke, you will have the illusion of a longer back-swing and a shorter more curtailed follow-though. The key is in the effective use of the bigger muscles of your arms and upper body moving in sync the same distance back and through. Your arms are your pendulum, your mechanism to create motion and not your hands which get the club head moving all over the place. Hand action affects your strike and distance control poorly, especially when you’re “under the gun” in pressure situations. “No hands are good hands in chipping!” The reason we have them is to keep the club steady and the angles we set, consistent.

Always try and land the ball onto the green as quickly as possible, or find the closest, flattest spot to land the ball onto. Try not to spin it too much, get it on the deck and let it roll! KNOW YOUR RULES CASUAL WATER Definition: "Casual water" is a temporary accumulation of water on the golf course. In other words, a lake is not casual water, but a puddle of rainwater (that will disappear once the sun comes out) is. Casual water must be identifiable before or after a player has taken his stance. Ground that is merely wet, spongy, mushy or muddy is not casual water. There must be an accumulation of water above ground that is visible. (If a player takes his stance where water is not visible, but doing so causes water to push up onto the surface where it is now visible, that does qualify as casual water.) If a golfer determines his golf ball rests in casual water, or that casual water interferes with his stance, he is entitled to relief. Rule 25 covers relief from casual water.

How do we get the Millennials to engage with Golf?
W
hen Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler teed off in the final pairing at the Open Championship in July, the future of golf has never looked brighter. Two of golf’s biggest stars, both only 25 years old, immensely talented, bursting with charisma and well able for the task of selling golf to their own generation, an age group now known as the “millennials�. The golf industry faces a difficult task to attract these millennials to choose golf over all the sports on offer. Many believe it is because of the length of time a round of golf takes while some believe golf needs to utitlise social media and modern technology to engage the millennial generation. The task of creating a balance between wooing the millennial generation whilst also keeping the older, more tradition-bound players happy is proving a delicate task. However, the risk of driving away purists is overridden by the need to compete for an emerging demographic.

Thimon de Jong, of the Whetstone Trends Interpretation Agency agrees that there needs to be a balance when searching for a way to attract the millennials but recognises that there is no simple answer for the sport. He believes that golf clubs have to find the middle ground between banning anything digital or having excessive use of social media and technology whilst also finding a way to attract a typically time conscious millennial with a format that suits their lifestyle.

Curro Aurora sprint to success at Ernie Els Champs
Curro Aurora protected their overnight advantage to claim a runaway victory at the Ernie Els SA Primary Schools Championship at Middelburg CC last month.
T
he Randburg team stretched a 10 stroke lead to an unchallenged 21 stroke victory over the defending champions St Dunstan’s College at the Mpumalanga course. Alex van der Merwe, Cole Stevens and Woo-Ju Son put the side ahead with a pooled score of 218 in the first round and a combined for a second round 221 for a winning score of 439.
Van der Merwe carded a second successive 72, while Stevens doubled up on 73s and Son followed an opening 73 with a 76 in the final round. The team’s fourth member, Kieren van Wyk, carded non-counting rounds of 74 and 84. Team manager Hardus van der Merwe was very pleased that his charges lifted the fourth edition of annual primary schools championship, hosted by four-time Major winner, Ernie Els.

Snyman snags Southern Cape Open Durbanville golfer Ian Snyman edged out Limpopo junior Hennie du Plessis to claim the Southern Cape Open at Mossel Bay GC.
T
he victory came exactly two years after the 19-year-old Province golfer was leading the same event, but was pipped at the post by a birdie finish from Sipho Bujela at George GC. This time, however, Snyman rode the confidence of podium finishes on the WPGU Premier Amateur Tour at King David, Atlantic Beach and Kuils River to one stroke victory on 10-under-par 278 and joined a growing list of first-time winners this season, including NJ Arnoldi, Keegan de Lange, Jason Smith, Hendrikus Stoop, James du Preez, Burger Heckroodt, Luke Trocado, Tristen Strydom, Gregory Royston and Marco Steyn with his maiden provincial breakthrough.

SA juniors claim top 20 at Youth Olympics South Africa’s Kyle McClatchie and Kaleigh Telfer delivered a champions’ performance in the final round to claim a top 20 finish in the Team Competition at the Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China on Tuesday. 18

Ekurhuleni’s McClatchie carded a 74, while Telfer from Gauteng fired a one-over-par 73 to improve five shots on her first round in the Girls Competition. “This was a undoubtedly a fantastic and unique experience for Kyle and Kaleigh,” said golf code manager, Gavin Reynolds. “They both enjoyed the chance to test the current level of their games against top golfers from around the globe. Both juniors realise that they have work to do, however, they learned a lot from the experience and the opportunity to gain experience at this very high international level will certainly benefit both of them in months to come.

I knew I had to pull it together. I lost a couple of shots in the last two rounds, but it was great to finish on such a high. Assad came home on the back of three top-10 finishes in the USA, including a tie for ninth at the Sun Belt Tournament.
Texas State University student Lora Assad is relishing her return to the United States after racking up two victories and a runner-up finish at the prestigious Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Championship during her summer break at home last month.
She kicked off her break at the Limpopo Championship at Polokwane GC and was stunned to tie for fifth after rounds of 81, 78 and 81. “The greens were lightning fast and scores were very high, so it was a good result in the end.” In early July, Assad tied for 15th in the Gauteng North Stroke Play Championship, but was unstoppable in the Match Play at Wingate Park CC. She defeated Ruzanne van der Walt 1-up in round one, got around Mae Cornforth, who is ranked 6th on the WGSA Rankings with a 4&2 result in round two and dispatched second ranked Michaela Fletcher 3 & 1 in the semi-final and went on to beat Natasha Carlsson 2&1 to claim the title.

Assad will be one of five players returning for the Bobcats, who qualified for the NCAA Regionals for a third straight year last season.
Assad opened with an expensive 79, but rallied with rounds of 76 and 71 for a five stroke victory on eightover-par 226 over fellow Gauteng golfer, Shawnelle de Lange at Benoni CC.

Samu sizzles in Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur victory. Ivanna Samu claimed her third victory this year and by far the biggest when she won the Sanlam South African Women’s Amateur Championship at Ruimsig CC last month. four holes to close the gap to only 2 down. But Samu held on for the biggest win of her career. “When I was 5-up I wasn’t thinking too much about that. I just wanted to keep playing my own game. And then Lora started holing a few putts and mine started missing. But my brother and caddie did a great job of keeping me focused on playing the golf course and not my opponent. He really kept me in the game,” Samu said. In the Plate Final, Western Province’s Cara Gorlei beat Jamie-Lee Daniels 7 & 6. This was one of the strongest fields in recent history in the Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Championship.

Kevin Sutherland had quite a round of golf Last month and it could have been even
The 50-year-old Sutherland shot the Champions Tour’s first ever 59, and he had a great chance for a 58 but bogeyed the finishing hole. After starting 9-under after just the first eight holes -- an insane stretch of seven birdies and an eagle -- Sutherland parred the 9th before birdies at 10 and 11, reaching 11-under after 11 holes. He leveled out a bit, parring the par-5 12th, before rolling in birdies at the 15th, 16th, and 17th. He went to the finishing hole at 14-under par, but missed the six-foot par for a 58. No player has ever shot below 59 at a PGA Tour sanctioned event. Six players have shot 59 on tour, most recently Jim Furyk at last year’s BMW Championship.

Ryder Cup to ban social media photos at Gleneagles culminates on Sept 26–28. The ground regulations warn ticketholders, who have paid up to £1,500 a day, that no audio or video capture is permitted and no still photography except on practice days.

roving once again that golf likes to be last in adapting to virtually everything, the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour have banned publishing photos from the 2014 Ryder Cup to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in order to protect “the brand,” according to the Telegraph (UK) newspaper. Over 250,000 spectators are expected to witness the clash between America and Europe at Gleneagles, which

The rules also state: “Images taken with a camera, mobile phone or other electronic device cannot be used for any purpose other than for private and domestic purposes. You must not sell, license, publish (including, without limitation, via Twitter or Facebook or any other social media site) or otherwise commercially exploit photographs.” A spokesman for Ryder Cup Europe said: “The Ryder Cup is one of the world’s most recognized sporting events and as such we need to ensure that the brand, encompassing fair play, teamwork and camaraderie is protected at all times which means ensuring that images of the event are not used for monetary gain in a manner which may go against those principles.

To repair or not to repair? This is the question that sets golfers with etiquette and golfers that doesn’t care apart from each other.
O
n most top courses people will be asked to fix their pitch marks and divots. This request usually gets conveyed in the form of a notice on the tee or via the starter on the first tee. After the first tee every golfer plays on their own and the turf will be left in their hands to either destroy or to look after. I have had some remarks from visitors during my career that shocked me to such an extent that I had no words. When asking some visitors one day to please repair their divots and pitch marks after seeing that they had no respect for the game of golf, their remark was simply that they pay enough to play golf and that it is not their job to repair these divots and pitch marks. It is answers like these that separate true golfers from hackers. For those true golfers out there and for those that would like to change their ways and become better ambassadors for golf, I have compiled some illustrated pictures to show how to repair pitch marks the correct way and also the incorrect way, and I also show you how to replace the turf after hitting a fat divot to give the turf a fighting chance to recover.

REPAIRING A DIVOT In the picture top left I show you how to take the turf and place it back in the damaged turf, and then lightly stamp it down with your feet. The next step will be to place a divot mix (Sand) on the area and flatten it. A simple few steps that will give the turf a good chance for full recovery.
FIXING A PITCH MARK THE CORRECT WAY The above illustration shows the correct way to fix a pitch mark and the end result is amazing. Top left you can see the pitch mark after hitting the green. Push the pitchfork in on the side and work the turf inwards towards the middle. If you work around the pitch mark and keep on moving the turf to the center and then gently tapping it down with your putter, you will have a smooth surface for the next golfer with almost no damage to the green. This method leaves almost no sign of damage if done correctly.

HOW NOT TO REPAIR A PITCH MARK The illustration on the left shows the incorrect way of fixing pitch marks and the devastating effect of this to the turf. Many golfers work around the pitch mark and pushes up the turf to the center of the hole. If you then tap it down with the putter, you will end up with a mark that will take up to 2 months to recover. By simply following the correct methods we can make the golfing experience for all golfers so much more fun.
With this article a year has almost past since I wrote my first piece for SA Golf trader. My first article was about spring treatment on golf courses. Now it has gone full circle to where we are busy with Hollowtining again. Most courses just finished, or they are about to start with their Spring treatments. – Executive Chairman of Gooderson Leisure Corporation LTD. • You were born in England, what are your memories of those early years and at what age did you immigrate to South Africa?
why do international tourists seem to ignore Durban and go to Cape Town?
• What was the first job that you had in South Africa?
As I said earlier when my father first came to Durban he described it as “paradise” which it is. Cape Town and the Kruger Park are two areas of South Africa that are marketed heavily as they have so much to offer. However Durban has lovely beaches, a sublime climate and an extremely interesting Indian culture and heritage. A lot more could be done to promote this.
• You have won many awards over the years, is there one that stands out in particular?
• You have a black belt in karate and have represented South Africa. What style of karate and how has the discipline inherently needed in such a sport helped you in your business life?
As a youngster in England I used to sell ice cream in the summer and pies in the winter, my father came over to South Africa and described it as “paradise”. I came over on a mail ship in 1957.
I started out assisting in the kitchen of my father’s hotel, which was the Lonsdale hotel.
Alan was very modest here and only mentioned his black belt in karate so we must mention that in 2000 he received the Hotelier of the year award from Fedhasa, as well as an award for Dedication and Loyalty Service to the Durban Hospitality Industry. He has also been inducted into the RCI Hall of Fame, for his contribution to the Timeshare Industry.
• Was there a rivalry between you and Sol Kerzner?
Well Sol owned the Astra hotel and we had the Lonsdale at the time so yes a bit of rivalry but we were friendly.
• You are Durban based and have to my knowledge been so for a long time. What makes Durban so special and why is it not better promoted as a tourist destination – I mean

Shotokan. It has helped me immensely, I have an extremely positive outlook on life and a lot of that can be attributed to karate.
• Is South Africa a really enticing destination for foreigners wishing to play golf here?
Oh yes. We have wonderful courses and the exchange rate makes it very favourable even considering the long haul flight.
• What is your favourite overseas destination and why?
I would have to say Peru. The food, the people and Machu Picchu which is incredible.
• What has been the secret to your long and hugely successful career? Hard work, research and something which I call “walk the plank “which means taking risks.

I like them all; every golf course has something special to offer.
• Which is your favourite golf course when overseas? I like the golf courses in Spain.
• I believe that you dabble in golf course design, can you elaborate?
I bought Drakensberg Gardens in 1969 and the golf course there was a 9-holer. I decided to make it 18-holes and to do it on my own, having read that Jack Nicklaus was keen on elevated tee boxes I followed suit. Many holes were redone but I kept the 6th the same as Gary Player had commented that he liked it. I am designing a 9-hole course at our Natal Spa Resort at the moment.
• Do you walk or take a cart? Take a cart.

he AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open was launched at the C Beach Club at Heritage Resorts on Domaine de Bel Ombre, becoming the first tri-sanctioned golf tournament endorsed by the Sunshine, European and Asian Tours, all of whom are founding members of the International Federation of PGA Tours. The tournament, which is expected to draw top performing golfers from each of the three Tours, will be played at the Heritage Golf Club from 7–10 May, 2015. The golf club, recently ranked among the top ten golf courses in Africa by global news broadcaster CNN, was chosen as the perfect venue for the three Tours to come together. The total prize fund of €1million is the highest purse ever to be paid out for a tournament held in Mauritius.

They say the only major problem with an annual seven day golf tour to the north coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal is the three-hundred and fifty-eight day wait until the next one.

he golf tour, as a concept, requires little introduction. It is in a way a time capsule, taking one back to the glory days of childhood. Days of intense back yard cricket, exploring any forest within walking distance and hotdogs for lunch. Of course the cricket is now golf, the forest is now a new course plus whatever wonders of nature it resides in and the hotdogs have been replaced with many ice-cold draughts. Pick any lasting memory of the light-hearted, raw joy of your youth, because it is these types of moments that the golf tour somehow effortlessly produces with delightful frequency. It is the ambitious early morning tee times, often met with concerning cases of the ‘’whiskey-hands’’, it is the sensational cooked breakfasts at the clubhouse. Golf Course Development Cost Survey 2014 (Part 3 of 3) How much does it cost?
As with the findings of the previous editions of the Golf Course Development Cost Survey, our research demonstrates that although varying from project to project, about 10-15% of the total budget is spent on pre-construction work when developing an 18-hole golf course and 85-90% is spent on the actual construction. Pre-construction costs include planning and design fees, professional fees for engineering, feasibility studies, legal advice and the cost of obtaining permits. Of these costs, typically course design requires the highest investment, making up more than half of the total pre-construction costs.
The following should be considered as integral to the construction costs: • Earthwork and shaping, which account on average for one-third of the total construction costs; • Irrigation and drainage, making up about a quarter of the average construction costs; • A third of the costs can be divided between three components: clearance and preparation of the site, grassing of greens, fairways and tee boxes, and surface landscaping; • Creation of cart paths, if applicable, makes up around 10% to the total costs.

Development costs by region
Based on the responses of our survey participants, we have calculated the average cost of developing a golf hole, considering golf courses of different sizes. Looking at the entire EMA region, the cost of a golf hole was EUR 328,000 on average, which is a significant increase (more than 50%) compared to our last survey in 2008. As our survey also reflects, this is mainly due to the fact that recent golf course developments include many more high-end golf courses, which are more expensive to develop. The most expensive region for the development of a golf hole in EMA is still the Middle East & North Africa (EUR 531,000 per hole on average). To a certain extent, this is due to the high concentration of signature and high-end golf courses. The development cost of a hole in Western Europe is around EUR 450,000, significantly higher than in other parts of Europe, as developments here also include a number of high-end integrated tourist resorts. In our previous survey, Eastern Europe was the least expensive region to develop a golf course, with an average cost of EUR 106,000 per hole. However, recent developments in this region were typically of higher quality, especially in countries like Russia and Belarus, but also in Poland and Bulgaria. Therefore, the average development cost per hole(EUR 367,000) in the region in the period of 2008-2013 was three times higher than in preceding years,when lower-quality facilities werebeing developed. In other parts of Europe costs remained lower, at EUR 220-230 thousand per hole on average. In Sub-Saharan Africa, a high percentage of highend and signature courses have been developed, mostly as part of golf resorts or golf communities. The average cost per hole in the region was EUR 320,000.

When looking at total construction costs of 18-hole golf courses, we can observe that in Europe the average costs range between EUR 3.8 million and EUR 7.2 million depending on the location and the quality of the golf course. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the construction costs for an 18-hole golf course are in excess of EUR 5.6 million and in the Middle East & North Africa it reaches the highest level with an average of EUR 9.4 million.
Development costs by quality
The total cost of a development is intrinsically dependent on the quality of the golf course. In some cases, the cost of a high-end golf course can be as much as five times more than a course of lower-quality. On the other hand, the construction of a signature course costs some 40-50% more than a “non-branded” top quality golf course, according to our sample. Based on our survey, the least expensive 18-hole courses –often designed and constructed in-house without the appointmentof professional service providers – have been developed for just over EUR 2 million, while the most expensive courses cost over EUR 10 million. We also learned about some extreme cases where the development cost of a golf course exceeded EUR 25 million.
Staying within the planned budget
We asked our survey participants whether they had stayed within their initially planned budget. About two-thirds of the developers responded that they had stayed within their set budget, and 12% even spent less than planned, often because they found ways to do some of the work in-house. However, almost a quarter of the developers went over their planned budget, either slightly (17%) or significantly (6%), due to unexpected extra costs or unprofessional initial planning.

Design fees â&#x20AC;&#x201C; from qualified architects to signature designers While a golf course can offer an acceptable return in its own right, in recent times golf has become a prestige facility for luxury communities, placing the golf course architect at the heart of new residential and resort facilities worldwide. In most cases, the architect must artfully weave course design into the residential component of a development. It pays to hire the golf course architect or designer as early as possible, preferably in the first stages of the project. The architectâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s advice on site selection and its cost estimation and coordination with other project consultants could save the developer time and money overall. The architect can help guide the project from start to completion.

architects cost approximately EUR 3 million on average. The difference was somewhat smaller when considering low-budget golf courses. We noted that designer fees havesignificantly decreased since 2008, by about 15% for qualified nonsignature architects and by over 20% for signature designers.
What kind of land is best for a golf course? Gently rolling terrain that requires minimal earthmoving is best. You ideally want nice vegetation and well-drained, sandy soils with plentiful good water. Good quality turf is easier and less expensive to grow and maintain in these conditions. Quality turf can be achieved on just about any site using proper construction and agromitic practices, but it may be more costly to do so. Do I need a championship course? This depends entirely upon the developerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s needs, the local or regional market demand, and the propertyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s characteristics. How long will the design process take? Typically it should take between three and six months, assuming all topographic and property boundary information is available for use.

Golf and real estate
Golf and real estate have been closely linked topics in recent years. Worldwide, you can now find several hundred real estate developments with a golf component. Although the residential golf community concept has a much shorter history in EMA than in North America, it is widely recognized that â&#x20AC;&#x201C; when properly planned - the location of houses alongside golf courses can help developers to increase sales velocity and add a sales premium to real estate prices. Numerous studies have indicated that golf courses come second only to a waterfront as the most desirable location for a housing community. However, golf, as part of a real estate or touristic complex, is not only an added value because of the facility itself, but mostly due to the beautiful, calm scenery and landscape a golf course provides.
Fifty-four percent of the respondents in our sample were developers of golf courses connected either to tourist resorts or real estate communities. We asked these respondents about the value that golf has brought to the surrounding real estate. With only a couple of exceptions, nearly all respondents achieved a premium on the sales price of associated real estate units. Close to half of the respondents with an integrated real estate development estimated this premium to be more than 20% in comparison to the selling price of a similar real estate unit in the neighborhood but without the golf course

connection. Over a third of the respondents estimated the premium to be between 11% and 20%, while 18% estimated an added value of less than 10%. In addition to the expected profitability associated with the sales of real estate units, over two-thirds of the respondents expect the golf course to provide a satisfactory return on investment in its own right as well. We also asked survey participants whether the name of the golf course architect added a premium to the real estate selling prices. Sixty-three percent responded positively, with

35% estimating this premium to be above 10%, and a quarter placing it between 6% and 10%. In the case of signature architects, all of the developers who chose a signature architect to design their golf courses experienced an additional premium of above 10% on the real estate unit prices.
Clubhouse development
As stated earlier, we did not consider the development of clubhouses in our survey analysis to better allow comparison of costs. Nevertheless, the clubhouse is an important element in golf course development, whether a stand-alone golf course or part of a residential community or tourist resort. The clubhouse is the golfer’s first and last impression when playing a round. Certainly the golf course is generally why people come, but a poorly designed clubhouse can adversely affect their overall experience. Care must be taken to ensure that a clubhouse complements the course and is an enjoyable place to be - and this in turn should drive increased revenue. A successful golf clubhouse is not too big, nor too small; not cavernous with wasted space, nor constrained and lacking in facilities. It should be designed in harmony with its setting and purpose. A solid understanding of golf operations, food service requirements and other clubhouse functions can save the developer hundreds of square meters delivering significant savings

on the investment. Some points to keep in mind when planning clubhouse space include: • Visitors today want more social opportunities, a family atmosphere and an emphasis on wellness; • It pays to create multiple dining venues, with the flexibility for these to function separately or together; • Building clubhouse facilities in a village format enables construction to be phased to match sales flow; • Kitchens and restroom facilities are the most expensive spaces to build. Where possible, provide a single centralized kitchen, and avoid overdesigning these “wet areas”; • Women have become more involved in golf and golf clubs, and though their dedicated space may often be proportionately less than men’s, they should always have equivalent and desirable amenities. Based on our research, the cost of building a very basic clubhouse of 200-250m2 starts at EUR 300,000. Nevertheless, some high-end clubhouses, which are also much larger in size (often well above 2,000m2) and offer extensive sport, leisure, and recreational facilities, can cost several millions to build.

Turning back the clock is the Golfer from the past?
WHO
• Born in 1886 in Lelant, Cornwall, England, he was a leading figure in the early years of professional golf in the United States. • Like many golfers of his era, he worked as a caddie and a club-maker’s apprentice while growing up. • He moved to the United States and turned professional in 1906, but never became an American citizen. • His winning margin in the 1921 U.S. Open was nine strokes, a record which was not broken until Tiger Woods won by 15 strokes in 2000. • He was one of the most prolific tournament winners of the first few seasons of the PGA Tour, which was founded in 1916. He won 21 times on the tour in total. • In 1940, he was honored as one of the 12 golfers to be inducted in the PGA’s inaugural Hall of Fame. Later he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1989. • He authored several books on golf technique, and died at age 80 in New Jersey in 1966.

: r u o T n o i d n Ta Winter is almost over here in South Africa as it slowly starts to warm up. Europe in now turning cooler and the Tour Player’s will soon be returning home to sunny South Africa for the SA Woman’s Open.
T
his year, the 2014 Cell C South African Woman’s Open will be held at the beautiful and scenic San Lameer Country Club on the Hibiscus South Coast, from the 16th to the 19th of October. The tournament has been extended into a 4 day event (72 hole championship) and boasts a worthy prize fund of Eur 320,000, with first prize being in the vicinity of +-R500,000.‘Cell C’ are new title sponsors for the event and this is the third year consecutively that the event will be co-sanctioned with the Ladies European Tour. Whoever wins the event, would then secure a 3 year playing exemption on the Ladies European Tour as well as a spot in the Evian Masters for 2015 (Woman’s equivalent to the men’s Tour Players Championship, an LPGA event hosted in France). The field is set to be one of the strongest that we have had as it boasts a host of local talent, professional and amateur, as well as some prominent and in form overseas players. Entries include: Lee Ann Pace, Monique Smit, Morganna Robbertze, Nobuhle Dlamini and Laurette Maritz. Overseas names to look out for are: Kylie Walker, Becky Brewerton, Trish Johnson, Anna-Lise Caudel and Marianne Skarpnord (last year’s champion).

My preparations for the SA Open have already started as I look forward to competing for the title that I held 6 years ago in my first season as a Professional Golfer (2009). I no longer play on the Ladies European Tour full time but instead enjoy a more balanced and comfortable life teaching at the Randpark Golf Club under the Martin Whitcher Golf School as well as play local and the odd overseas event. Whilst I have been enjoying a very different life compared to previous years out on Tour, I find that my golf has still improved and progressed. In all likelihood, as I have grown and matured as a person, so has my outlook and perspective of the game. I was always told that many golfers only go into their “prime of a golf career” as they turn 30. I would imagine that this is mostly attributed to a sense of maturity and calm. So with that in mind, I am confident that perhaps some of my best golf is yet to come. The great Annika Sorenstam took a sabbatical from playing golf. After that she then came back to competitive tournament golf on the LPGA where she dominated for 5 years and now is a retired, successful Hall of Fame Golfer.

A husband and wife go to a counselor after 15 years of marriage. The counselor asks them what the problem is and the wife goes into a rage, listing every problem they had in the last 15 years they’ve been married, and she goes on and on and on. Finally the counselor gets up, goes around the desk, embraces the woman, and kisses her passionately. The woman shuts up and sits quietly in a daze. The counselor turns to the husband and says “That is what your wife needs at least 3 times a week, can you do that “? The husband says “I can bring her in Monday and Friday’s, but on Wednesday’s, I play golf!”

A man and his wife walked into a dentist’s office. The man said to the dentist, “Doctor, I’m in one hell of a big hurry! I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf. So forget about the anesthetic and just pull the tooth and be done with it.I don’t have time to wait for the anesthetic to work!” The dentist thought to himself, “My goodness,this sure is a very brave man, asking me to pull his tooth without using anything to kill the pain.” So the dentist asked him, “Which tooth is it, sir?” The man turned to his wife and said, “Open your mouth, Honey, and show the doctor which tooth hurts.”

My boss phoned me today, he said, “Is everything okay at the office?” I said, “Yes, it’s all under control. It’s been a very busy day; I haven’t stopped.” “Can you do me a favor?” he asked. I said, “Of course, what is it?” “Speed it up a little, I’m in the foursome behind you!”
GOLF FENCE
A little old lady was walking down the street dragging two large plastic garbage bags behind her. One of the bags was ripped and every once in a while a $20 fell out onto the sidewalk. Noticing this, a policeman stopped her, and said, “Ma’am, there are $20 bills falling out of that bag.” “Oh, really? Darn it!” said the little old lady. “I’d better go back and see if I can find them. Thanks for telling me officer.” “Well, now, not so fast,” said the cop. “Where did you get all that money? You didn’t steal it, did you?” “Oh, no, no”, said the old lady. “You see, my back yard is right next to a Golf course. A lot of Golfers come and pee through a knot hole in my fence, right into my flower garden.” “It used to really tick me off. Kills the flowers, you know. Then I thought, why not make the best of it?” So, now, I stand behind the fence by the knot hole, real quiet, with my hedge clippers. Every time some guy sticks his thing through my fence, I surprise him, grab hold of it and say, “O.K., buddy! Give me $20, or off it comes.” “Well, that seems only fair,” said the cop, laughing. “OK. Good luck! Oh, by the way, what’s in the other bag?” “Not everybody pays.”
