The L&N Station is a historical building inside of Knoxville, Tennessee’s World’s Fair Park. The building has had a rich history of bringing people together. Opened in 1905, the building’s original use was that of a train station. Years passed and the station closed and then reopened in 1982, in time for the World’s Fair, located in its backyard. It is now currently being used as a STEM high school, which brings together students from all over Knox County. This rich history became inspiration for the intent of this design-- to continue the L&N’s history of being a concourse that connects people. The focus of this project was to create a cultural community center intended to celebrate minorities, be it race, sexuality, gender, or religious.

The design of this cultural community center is based on the theory that social change can be made through architecture by pairing a stimulating program with the implementation of both biophilic design & environmental psychology to mould the space, making the environment not only pleasant, but captivating.

The main focus of the community center is the performance space. A Fibonacci spiral appears on the floor as an inlay, defining the edges on the different levels of risers. This space can transform from a sunken stage with rows of seating to a completely flush surface, as shown in the diagrams on this page. This is accomplished not only through the collapsing seats, the removable handrails, or the movable stage, but

Flexible use is crucial in this space, as each cultural performance requires its unique arrangement of the space, such as a gamelan, an Indonesian instrumental ensemble, whose performance requires the audience to surround the performers. This would require a flat stage, instead of a lowered stage. The ribs that encompass this stage are stationary and whose shape in an elevation view is a Fibonacci shell.

Embarcadero Center Conceptual Design - Daytime
Research, teamwork, and design were at the heart of this summer intern project at Gensler. Research on the present & future of retail was compiled, illustrated, and edited by the 13 interns. Working together with people from different design backgrounds, a video was created to showcase the summer’s accomplishments. The group was split into two teams, Embarcadero Center & Union Square, to apply the knowledge acquired to the design process, resulting in a spacial response to the question
of retail.
10
11
The Embarcadero center is a brutalist building protected by the city of San Francisco as a historical building. However, despite its prime location, it is not doing completely well. Sprinkled with closed, unrented spaces, the Embarcadero Center falls short due to its lack of windows, warmth, and natural light. These brutalistic features unfortunately end up making this incredible building feel more like a prison than a shopping mall.
The solution theorized was to create a more welcoming space on the topmost “roof“ floor that continues enticing visitors at all times of day. The design should entice both visitors and renters by covering the cold concrete with warm wood, providing benches, and introducing dynamic booths. These booths would be small-time vendors by day, social booths by night, shifting the mood of the deck with the sun.

Union Square is a famed historic shopping district where many expensive retail stores preside. Rent is high, and sales are equally as impressive. Research was conducted to explain why some spaces in the city, like the Embarcadero Center, are struggling to rent all of their spaces, when shopping districts like Union Square are bustling and almost always full of people, both tourists and residents. After learning more about the area, including city zoning, interns noted the patterns of the same Below are a
number of specific spatial typologies that exist in the Union Square area:
-The Norm -The Skinny Mini -The Jewelbox -The Tall, Not Wide -The Treehouse -The Urban Shortcut
-The Showoff
Union Square’s existing typologies seem to only need small adjustments in order to entice retailers, engage with the street life, and provide a
destination for both tourists and locals. One adjustment would be to reduce the amount of square footage dedicated to retail. The upper floors could be activated with a mixture of flex retail, residential, or office, providing increased foot traffic and density for the urban block. New zoning satisfies both property owners and the city. Designed to exist within an assisted living center for elderly people with dementia or Alzheimer’s, this room takes research and uses it to create a space in which a person with dementia will be comfortable. Familiar materials, such as concrete and wood are used. From the bed, the closet, bathroom, reading bench, and entrance are visible. There are no doors within the space in order to avoid the patient becoming lost. This specific room was designed with a musical client in mind. Music has been shown to improve memory recall in patients with Alzheimer’s, allowing them to better remember things from the distant past. By using the familiar curves of the violin, a violin player might be encouraged to play the instrument and experiment with the acoustics of the room. The hope is that this room would encourage better memory recall with elders.
16
The wooden slats create an acoustic system that filters light. It not only creates spaces by curving from the ceiling to the ground, but by becoming a part of the furniture, and even the shower. 17

Cork Ceiling Installation
Located in a renovated warehouse in the Old City of Knoxville, this unique concept is a recycling center turned wine bar. Customers are encouraged to bring their recyclable cork and glass products in exchange for discounts at the bar. This bar encourages people to slow down from the fast pace of life and relax with a glass of wine. This center not only encourages recycling with its points program, but educates its customers with framed infographics about recycling, wine, and cork, line up along the main hall to the bar. All of the materials chosen for this bar are eco-friendly or are made with recyclable products. A large cork art display hangs above customers, the main center wall and bar is covered in a cork wall covering, and even the floors are made of cork. This is to remind customers that there are several ways of recycling the materials that they bring.

Wine Splash Diagram
The main wall system that occurs in the space is a swirling centerpiece that consists of four main parts. It is shaped after a splash of wine swirling into a glass in plan view. The four main parts are the hidden restroom, the hidden recycling bins, the fireplace, and finally, the bar. Visitors should “flow“ into the warm, inviting space from the bar and back into the seated lounge area. Wine Splash Diagram

REFLECTIONS
Exploded Axon
Installation from above.
Designed as a hypothetical, multi-level installation, Reflections studies the materiality and its effect on the reflective quality of light. Panels of copper, mirrors, wood, and plexiglass come together to form glimmering prisms. These prisms cut through the ground plane and are designed to be pushed and pulled by the users with ease, then locked into place. This assortment of positions and materials allow for light to enter in a variety of intensities. These pathways that welcome light into the adjacent space also allow the user’s range of vision to pass through the prism. This means their view cuts through the ground plane, and allows them to view others above or below them. This visual connection creates an air of intrigue and mystery between the floors that will hopefully lead to public interactions within the community in which it is installed.
30
This project began by using a grid of triangles. This grid was then spread apart. Finally, the triangles were extruded, to allow for variation within the grid.
Through interacting with the prisms by pushing, pulling, then locking into place, individuals would have the opportunity to effect the light quality on the floor below.
Interactions
Hydraulics would be installed inside each prism in order to allow the user ease when pushing or pulling. 31

MALLEABLE NETWORKS
Ghosted Axon
This office space was designed for the hypothetical eastern headquarters for creative mastermind, OpenIdeo. OpenIdeo provides an international platform for people from all walks of life to come together, create connections, and make the world a better place by collectively looking at one socioeconomic problem at a time. This particular design looks at the workplace as a changing space. Just as OpenIdeo is a malleable network, this office design allows interpersonal relationships and connections to be changed by the way each group interacts with the environment. In allowing this malleability, creativity is allowed to flow with ease throughout the open workspace.

BY EMMANUEL GONZALEZ - Redesigned by Tanya Granados
Created as a part of a furniture design course, this credenza was made by modifying a previous design to have details of finer furniture, such as beveled corners, an inset floating back, and beautiful mid-century modern style legs. The dimensions were modified from the original design, by Emmanuel Gonzalez, to have a more appealing proportions, turning the white maple into a sleek shape that matches the walnut leg’s aesthetic. Finally, the bungee cord was threaded through the holes to create a fun, playful side to the piece. Wooden ends were hand-carved out of the walnut to detail the ends.

VERTEBRAE Designed as a set of joints, this modular system takes personalization to a new level. Because this furniture system is created from a kit of joints, it allows the user to create furniture to accommodate their individual height and needs. The example on this page exhibits how the kit can be put together to accommodate users with disabilities. The configuration on the opposite page shows the design’s versatility and mobility. This design was made to be accessible through any 3D printer and constructed with raw materials from local stores that do not require special machinery, allowing for individual control.

Digi-Fab The Digital Fabrication lab inside of the College of Architecture + Design’s Fab Lab has a vast variety of tools. Experimentation led to the creation of these objects. Some were created entirely through digital labor, then 3D printed, while others involved multiple steps. The T-Rex skull involved splitting a model of a T-Rex skull in Rhino, laser cutting and engraving each piece, and rubbing ink into each engraved piece. Finally, it was fashioned together with metal fastenings. The parametric coral was created through Grasshopper in Rhino, then edited to be printable. The form was inspired by Haruka Misawa’s 3D printed aquarium pieces.

collage Inside a modest art college within the ancient streets of Firenze, Italy, six students learned about the art of collage from Deb Schmerler over the course of a month. As it turns out, collage is a number of varied layers of materials combined to communicate a message or emotion. We learned to manipulate material such as gesso in a new way, as well as to reuse & recyce pieces of magazines, old books, materials such as tape, and more in order to bring through our unique messages. These pieces took time to build, layer upon layer, each one supporting the one above it or enunciating the pieces below. This breadth of materials and methods came together to create various textures, depth, composition, and a story.

photography During our stay in Italy, we also explored our surroundings through photography under the instruction of Diane Fox. We were taught to observe our surroundings in order to catch particular moments, to be intentional with our lens. Composition, photoshop, camera settings, adjustments, and terminology were taught every morning before a daily excursion to document our surroundings. Over the course of the month, we traveled from our home base of Florence to surrounding towns of Sienna, Cinque Terra, Pisa, and Venice, where we were lucky enough to catch the Venice Biennale and experience the artistic wonder that it is. strut | florence 2015
