The Hong Kong Institute of Legal Translators announced the launch of the "Legal Translation Professional Recognition Scheme"
The Hong Kong Institute of Legal Translators held two lectures at the South China (Hong Kong) Court of International Arbitration last weekend The speakers were Dr Poon Wai-yee, President of the Institute of Legal Translators and former associate professor of the Open University of Hong Kong, and Dr Poon Wai-yee, Senior Counsel and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the South China (Hong Kong) International Arbitration Court Dr Leung Ting-bong, Justice of the Peace and former Chairman of the Independent Police Complaints Handling Commission, shared that the content of his speech was on the topics of "Evidence Translation" and "Issues and Prospects of Bilingual Legal Practice in the Age of Artificial Intelligence"
Dr Pan used to be the Director of Interpretation for the Police Department and the Director of Court Interpretation for the Ministry of Justice He often traveled between courts and cases, and became familiar with different police terminology when handling evidence. During the speech, Dr Pan shared a number of "evidence translations" Interesting cases and police terminology such as: "Wok beef tenderloin" and "How many pairs of pants are you wearing?" demonstrate the difficulty of interpreting in court. Translators must have good ethics when handling legal translation documents Any deviation in interpretation will affect the outcome of the judgment Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more and more popular Dr Pan said that AI can process straightforward sentences, but some words cannot be effectively translated to express in evidence Legal translation cannot be overly literal, and it must be important to express the meaning behind the words AI can assist in processing basic legal translation content and ultimately hand it over to translators for review and correction. Dr. Pan also shared the difference between Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation Semantic translation requires the grammar from Chinese to English and retains the cultural elements of the original text; while communicative translation requires the conversion of translated elements. When translating evidence, the Chinese semantics and context must be translated into English, and the Chinese semantics and context must also be translated into English To comply with grammar, translators also need to have a comprehensive understanding of police case handling procedures, court procedures and translation requirements
"Legal Translation Professional Recognition Scheme" cultivates legal translation professionals to promote bilingualism and legal translation in Hong Kong
Dr. Poon announced that the Hong Kong Institute of Legal Translators has launched the "Legal Translation Professional Recognition Scheme" The purpose of the scheme is to provide legal translators with both theoretical and practical training, and to enhance the translators' legal knowledge, translation knowledge and Chinese and English proficiency. The academic review committee of the society evaluates the level of translators through examinations and awards certificates, hoping to further promote bilingual legal and legal translation in Hong Kong Dr Pan Huichuan concluded the speech sharing session with the lyrics "With love, I believe there is a way out With love, my feelings remain unchanged “
In the second speech, Senior Barrister Dr. Leung Ting-bong shared about the application of artificial intelligence He said that Hong Kong plays a pivotal role in the international legal community, and legal translation is a very technical academic field. He mentioned that when he served as a barrister in 1980, the case was heard in English. The case related to the division of territories involved the laws of the Qing Dynasty The experts invited were British and the witnesses were Hakka. He said that Chinese and English have evolved too much and it is very difficult to translate In local dispute resolution, many situations and languages are used, but some wisdom, details and ethics, artificial intelligence will have limitations, because it requires the professional knowledge of lawyers. The law is not just a text, but a part of life. All areas such as property rights and contracts require words, without words there would be no law In law, both Chinese and English have different ways of expressing opinions, resulting in different interpretations. Based on historical and cultural evolution, legal translation becomes difficult. Promoting AI to assist legal translation AI is still not qualified to replace the position of legal translators
Dr. Liang pointed out that translators need to meet six conditions for legal translation work, namely: high language proficiency; sufficient legal knowledge; sensitivity to understand the cultural differences behind the two languages; the ability to specialize in research; loyalty to details and ethics. Qualifications for professionals. At present, artificial intelligence has certain limitations in processing legal translation conditions At this stage, AI needs time to learn to improve the smoothness and accuracy of legal translation Dr Liang emphasized the question raised by many people: "Will AI take over my job?" He believed that AI will not completely replace or threaten the position of legal translators, but said that if the industry does not try to understand AI, it will definitely be worse than understanding AI A person takes his or her position. He proposed that Hong Kong can create an artificial intelligence for the legal sector and input enough Hong Kong judgments and regulations for training It is expected that the establishment will take a long time Currently, AI plays an assistant role in legal translation to assist legal translators.
“Navigating Tomorrow: Strategic Pathways for Hong Kong's Future Evolution” at ADF 15th Anniversary Conference
Four Unique Advantages Leading to Artificial Intelligence Development Opportunities in Hong Kong
Accounting Development Foundation 15th Anniversary Conference was successfully held on 29 June 2024 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, with 434 attendees marking a landmark event in the Accounting industry. The event themed “Navigating Tomorrow: Strategic Pathways for Hong Kong's Future Evolution”, brought together an impressive array of experts from various industries, professions and high achievers for a day of knowledge-sharing and to discuss critical aspects of Hong Kong’s trajectory. The conference was inaugurated by The Honourable Paul Chan Mo-po, GBM, GBS, MH, JP, The Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government and founding Chairman of ADF, who delivered a keynote speech He highlighted the development opportunities presented by artificial intelligence (AI), noting the role of government in guiding capital and leveraging market resources to create favorable conditions for AI applications across vertical and cross-industry sectors, thereby fostering a vibrant ecosystem. He emphasized that accountants' core functions and values, including professional judgment and ethical conduct, are irreplaceable by AI and rely on human experience, wisdom, conscience, and interpersonal communication
The Unstoppable Rise of AI Development and Hong Kong’s Unique Opportunities
Mr. Chan remarked, “Over the past two years, large language models have developed rapidly, and generative AI applications have surged explosively, transforming numerous industries AI development and application worldwide are unstoppable forces Every technological revolution brings initial pains but ultimately results in productivity gains and quality of life improvements.” He asserted that AI development presents opportunities for Hong Kong, given its diverse economic structure and rich industries, enhancing socio-economic resilience against external factors and different economic cycles.
Mr Chan identified four unique advantages for AI development in Hong Kong Firstly, Hong Kong has strong research capabilities and is home to top universities, scientific research institutions and talents Secondly, The safe and orderly flow of mainland data to Hong Kong will allow Hong Kong to bring together mainland and international data and attract cutting-edge AI companies to settle there. Thirdly, The AI technology applications provided by Hong Kong can support "cross-regional" scenarios, including scenarios in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and even the entire mainland, as well as international applications Lastly, Hong Kong has a complete capital chain, from seed funds to support start-ups, to venture capital and the stock market
Honoured guests at the conference included Mr Wang Songmiao, Secretary-General of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr Li Xuhong, Deputy DirectorGeneral of the Department of Administration and Finance of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR and Prof Lam Chi Yuen Nelson, JP, Director of Audit of the Government of the HKSAR They engaged in insightful exchanges with members of the Accounting Development Foundation’s board of directors and other guests.
The keynote session "Navigating Tomorrow: Strategic pathways for Hong Kong's Future Evolution" featured three eminent speakers: Mrs. Betty Yuen, JP, Chairman of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited and former Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce, Ms Janey Lai, CEO and Executive Director of Accounting and Financial Reporting Council and Dr William Yu, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of World Green Organisation. As an important business hub in the Asia-Pacific region, Hong Kong should increase cooperation with the mainland, the Middle East and other emerging markets to make Hong Kong a center for innovation and technology and drive the development of upstream, midstream and downstream industries The green economy and climate change trends cannot be ignored and have become the focus of attention around the world. Companies will add sustainable ESG-related content to promote green finance, which requires the industry to work together to respond.
The first panel session featured a Legislative Councillor from the accounting functional constituency Hon Wong Chun Sek, Edmund, and Dr Jacinto Tong, Vice Chairman and CEO of Gale Well Group Limited discussing several hot topics Councillor Wong expressed support from the government to build Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology centre. For qualifying companies enjoying a special reduced tax rate will not reduce the government’s tax revenue, but will rather promote and increase Hong Kong’s overall revenue sources Dr Tong pointed out that the current property market policy issue is a hot move, the transactions remained low after the Special Stamp Duty was withdrawn, followed by high interest rates and banks' strict attitude towards property owners who are holding more than one unit
The second panel discussion session featured insights from Mr Parco Wu, Founder of PW CPA & Co. and Council Member of HKICPA & Immediate Past President of SCAA, Ms. Yan Yeung, Partner of PwC Tax Services and HKICPA Council Member, Prof Calvin Tse, Founder of Sinno International CPA Limited and HKICPA Council Member and Mr Frank Lam, the Director of Assurance Services and Leader of the Family Office of BDO Limited and HKICPA Council Member In recent years, the trend of Hong Kong enterprises going north has been booming The government is committed to helping and supporting Hong Kong small and medium-sized enterprises to develop in the mainland. Hong Kong people have increasingly adapted to the mainland's life, food and culture However, it is not easy for the accounting industry to start a business in the country. The speaker suggested Accountants may consider opening an accounting firm in Hong Kong and then setting up a branch in the Mainland. This would be more preferable
Embrace and make good use of artificial intelligence to enhance and cultivate new industries.
The conference discussed from many aspects the future development direction of Hong Kong accounting for the overall society AI is developing rapidly Proper use of AI can reduce human errors, organize and analyze massive data, help practitioners conduct more accurate analysis, identify problematic financial statements, and Documentation, managing relative risks. In addition to improving its own advantageous industries, Hong Kong also needs to cultivate new industries to enhance the momentum of Hong Kong's economic development, including the innovation and technology industry, life and health technology industry, financial technology industry and new energy industry The accounting profession needs to increase their understanding and mastery of artificial intelligence, embrace and make good use of artificial intelligence, and improve "AI Literacy" and "AI Preparedness" just like they did when they first welcomed the computerization era

In a vibrant celebration of South Africa’s 30th anniversary of freedom, which has been widely covered in local press and media, HKMU LiPACE (Hong Kong Metropolitan University Li Ka Shing School of Professional and Continuing Education) and the Consulate General of South Africa recently co-organised a remarkable South African Cultural Activity Week. The week-long event, attended by prominent guests from various sectors, aimed to foster cultural exchange and promote understanding between the local and African communities in Hong Kong Over two exciting days, participants were treated to a diverse range of activities that included a movie screening, a captivating lecture by Dr Jane Mufamadi, CEO of Freedom Park, and soul-stirring musical performances by Hong Kong-based South African singer Ms Eli Zaelo
Solid friendship between HKMU LiPACE and the Consulate General
This was by no means the first time the School joined forces with the Consulate General of South Africa Mr Mojalefa Mogono, Consul General of South Africa, had previously hosted a forum on the development of Fintech in South Africa in the University’s library and had been invited for a fireside chat on the establishment of the Rainbow Nation. Building on these past successful collaborations, the Consulate General extended their full and unrelenting support in coorganising the Cultural Week
In fact, HKMU LiPACE has long been committed to providing students with a holistic learning experience Central to this vision is the School's emphasis on promoting internationalisation inplace, intercultural awareness, and inclusiveness, which together constitute the concept of the “3-i initiatives” within the School The School recognizes the gravity of preparing students to become global citizens and strives to strengthen collaboration with different consulates and cultural entities.
Day 1: Movie Screening - “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”
The cultural week, officially opened by Consul General Mojalefa Mogono, commenced on 18th June with a movie screening featuring Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom in the presence of distinguished guests including Ms. Satwant Khanalia, Consul General of India, Ms. Alice Mudumi, Consul Political and Economic and Mr Desmond Makosa, Consul Tourism, from Consulate General of Zimbabwe, Ms Devi Novianti, representative of the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) as well as Mr. Mohamed Ali Diallo, President of African Union Hong Kong. The audience was mesmerised by the film's portrayal of Nelson Mandela's extraordinary life, which chronicled his journey and lifelong struggle to free his compatriots from the unfair system of racial segregation and minority rule in South Africa.
Towards the end of the movie, the audience also got a glimpse of Mandela’s struggle on a more intimate and personal level, namely the separation from his wife Winnie, who had been his source of support throughout his years of imprisonment. This hint of vulnerability seemingly resonated with the audience as it added a human side to Mandela, whose spirit and resilience are often deemed indomitable and somewhat transcendent The presence of representatives of various consulates has undoubtedly encapsulated the importance of cultural exchange and understanding, and perhaps more importantly, added a touch of international solidarity, showcasing the shared values of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity
Day 2: Dr. Jane Mufamadi's Lecture on Freedom Park and Singing Performances
On 20th June, the South African Cultural Week continued with a thought-provoking lecture delivered by Dr. Jane Mufamadi, CEO of Freedom Park, a significant cultural landmark in South Africa that commemorates the country's journey towards freedom and democracy Dr Mufamadi eloquently highlighted how Freedom Park serves as a memorial and knowledge centre, honouring those who fought against apartheid and celebrating the cultural diversity that defines South Africa today while imparting on visitors the universal values of equality and human rights in addition to traditional values not just relevant to South Africa but also the whole African continent. Through her insightful presentation, she shed light on the historical significance of Freedom Park, its symbolism, and its role in preserving South Africa's diverse heritage Meanwhile, Dr Mufamadi herself stood proudly as a testament to a generation of professional women leaders who exemplify the fruit of growing up under the banner of the Rainbow Nation.
Complementing the intellectual stimulation of the movie screening and the lecture were the stunning musical performances that infused the South African Week with soulful melodies and rhythms Ms Eli Zaelo, a Hong Kong-based South African singer, amazed the audience by performing in three languages, i.e., Zulu, Putonghua, and English. Her talent not only brought pride to her country but also echoed the diversity of Hong Kong’s multicultural society Her impeccable performance brought the week to a climactic finale, leaving attendees inspired and uplifted with a renewed appreciation for cultural diversity. Concluding the South African Cultural Activity Week, Consul General Mojalefa Mogono thanked HKMU LiPACE for co-officiating this event with great triumph In the meantime, Dr Benjamin Chan (Dean) remarked that the School shall continue such partnerships in the future to bring South African and other African cultures into the campus in order to consolidate its efforts in promoting internationalisation at home, intercultural awareness, and inclusiveness
Moving forward: getting to know more about the African continent
Through organising the South Africa Week, the Consulate General of South Africa and HKMU LiPACE have set a precedent for future initiatives that could facilitate cultural understanding and appreciation of Africa's vast heritage This has served as an invitation to the education sector as well as the public to delve deeper into the African continent, embracing its rich tapestry of cultures, languages, and histories. Hong Kong, known for its cosmopolitan nature and rich cultural diversity, has often been focused on Western cultures, with limited exposure to the diverse heritage of Africa Hopefully, the South African Cultural Activity Week would serve as a catalyst for change by igniting a spark of curiosity and a desire to explore more about the African continent within Hong Kong’s higher education
Lingnan University and the Hong Kong Academy of Arts (affiliated with the Hong Kong Arts Center) jointly organize the "Jockey Club "Intangible Cultural Heritage Education Program" to celebrate Intangible Cultural Heritage
Hong Kong’s traditional crafts often contain spirit and persistence, and are an important carrier of cultural inheritance However, with the passage of time and social changes, traditional crafts are facing the crisis of being forgotten. The course combines the three major elements of research, education and activation to actively promote the development of crafts, awaken the public's attention to intangible cultural heritage skills, and enhance their practical and spiritual values The works in the main exhibition hall come from traditional and contemporary instructors of five intangible cultural heritage craft courses , plus 15 instructor training course students, as well as a total of 74 middle schools and more than 200 middle school students in student training courses , bringing to life what they have learned this year Let the public appreciate the results of each student's efforts
Display traditional crafts and experience the atmosphere of folk crafts
The carnival will display handicrafts from different craftsmen, placing traditional craftsmanship in the details of life, showing the public the flexibility of various intangible cultural heritage skills in daily life and its innovative language In order to increase public participation, the conference has specially set up 11 intangible cultural heritage skills booth games that are the focus of this project, bringing together different traditional skills elements in Hong Kong to let the public know more about traditional craft culture In addition, different intangible cultural heritage skills workshops, including: Guangcai making skills, paper-cutting skills, dough sculpting skills, sugar blowing skills, white iron making skills and steamer making skills, are provided for free to the public to make their own crafts and experience the craftsmanship We hope that the carnival will bring new craft experiences and interactions to the public, pay tribute to local traditional craft masters, and rewrite the meaning of inheritance and innovation

11 Things You Shouldn’t Store in Your Bathroom
Some products made specifically to be used in the bathroom should definitely not be stored in the bathroom Here's why
1
Towels
Medicine
Don’t keep your medicine in your medicine cabinet. We’re not just saying that to be ironic Medicines and vitamins should be stored at a room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees Fahrenheit Keeping them in a moisture-filled room, like your bathroom, can make them less potent or cause them to go bad before their expiration date, according to the U S National Library of Medicine
Bathrooms are the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew, and your towels are easily susceptible to these gross fungi. It’s fine to keep one towel hung up in the bathroom, as long as you swap it out once a week Turning on an exhaust fan can help dry out the room and your damp towel faster.

Books
Bathrobe
Another bit of ironic advice: Keep bathrobes out of the bathroom Just like towels, damp robes could harbor bacteria, and humidity can give them a musty odor Let them dry in your closet instead of on a hook in your bathroom
We get it it can be nice to have some reading material available while you’re doing your business But the books and magazines that are kept in the bathroom will absorb moisture, leaving you with wrinkled pages and deteriorating binding

5
Jewelry
Jewelry boxes are generally kept on dressers and vanities for good reason The humidity from your bathroom can make jewelry tarnish more quickly than normal, especially when it comes to sterling silver Store your jewelry in a cool, dry place. Keeping it in an airtight bag is another effective method
Toothbrush
Yes, all the rumors you’ve heard are true. A 2012 study from Manchester University found that your toothbrush may house more than 10 million bacteria, and a portion of that comes from fecal matter that’s sprayed around the room every time you flush the toilet. To keep your brush as germ-free as possible, rinse and air-dry it after each use, and, if you still choose to store it in the bathroom, close the toilet lid before you flush and definitely, don’t store in next to the toilet.
Perfume
Makeup
Leaving your prized makeup products in the bathroom exposes them to a lot of unwanted heat and moisture, which allows mold and other bacteria to spread and make your makeup go bad faster. And like toothbrushes, makeup brushes are also bound to get contaminated with fecal matter from sprayed toilet water That’s something you definitely don’t want touching your face.
Heat and perfume just don’t mix The experts at perfume org say that fluctuations in temperature (the kind that can occur when you take steamy showers) can destroy the molecular integrity of your fragrance and cause it to sour
Razor Blades
Nail Polish
It’s fine to keep your current razor in the shower, but extra razor blades should be left outside of the bathroom. Otherwise, the humidity may rust or dull them before you even start to use them, Good Housekeeping reports Drying razors after each shave can help keep them more effective longer. Do you live in an old house? There might be razor blades in your walls 9

Most nail polishes will last about two years, but leaving those bottles in the bathroom can make them go bad toss nail polish that doesn’t blend, is too thick, or looks crumbly much faster Again, heat and humidity are the culprits Avoid these other bathroom mistakes you never knew you made.
Non-waterproof electronics
We love to sing in the shower as much as anyone, but humidity can do serious damage to your phone If you need your tunes or morning news while you shower, invest in a shower radio (yes, they still exist) or a waterproof speaker
