Taos Real Estate Market Report © Peter Lora of the Lora Company
SINGLE-FAMILY HOMES - Unit sales are lagging last year by 3, but dollar sales are up. Prices are rising due to demand exceeding supply of homes for sale. If you are thinking of selling, now is a great time! Call for a free market analysis and consultation about the selling process. CONDOMINIUMS - Through June, unit sales are up 33% and dollar sales are up 41% over last year. Both median and average prices are rising. As with single-family homes, lack of inventory has been a factor. LAND - Year-to-date unit sales are 5% below last year’s pace. Dollar sales are down 27%. The land market hasn’t recovered from the recession nearly as much as the residential market. NOTE: These data do not include Angel Fire and other areas included in the Taos MLS that are not considered part of the main Taos market.

STORY BY DENA MILLER PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID ANTHONY
CLAY, PAINT & WOOD:
THE ESSENCE OF TAOS STYLE M A Y B E you already own a home here, or maybe you’re still looking. Either way, no doubt you’ve been drawn to this region so richly gifted with its storied natural light, sublime scenery, pleasent climate and unique yet worldly remoteness. It’s no wonder this is your chosen destination— that’s quite a cornucopia of blessings.
And, everyone who chooses Northern New Mexico as the place to set down roots knows they are also surrounded with an equal wealth of fine art offerings with which to decorate those homes. With so many choices, it might be overwhelming to figure out what to buy and how to style your purchases. It’s quite simple, however. Let’s begin by focusing on the three “musthaves” – paintings, pottery and furniture – and refer to a panel of experts and renowned artists to lend some direction in beautifying your home. We met with Max Jones and Tony Walker, who last year opened Jones Walker of Taos, one of the buzziest new galleries to grace the Taos scene. We also zeroed in on the iconic styles of artist Jim Wagner and potter Stephen Kilborn, using the custom furniture designs of David Mapes as both a backdrop and style elements in themselves. Wagner, a true Taos treasure, is known for his often whimsical, always colorsaturated oil paintings that “are just what pops up in my head. I don’t stand in front of a canvas with a thought – just a brush.” Kilborn’s pottery is likewise mischievous and amusing, traditionally craft-
20
ENCHANTED HOMES CXXVIII enchantedhomeseller.com
ed but winking at conventionality with its images. And Mapes can custombuild quintessential pieces that either stand classically on their own or bring a touch of the unexpected. Was it possible to bring the works of these artists harmoniously together in one room? How could the three divergent styles come together in a Taos home? The group experimented with fashioning their artistry together, and the results were both stunning and an inspiration to anyone looking to acquire or upgrade their collections. Jones and Walker were not surprised. The two partners, who operated a successful furniture, art and design business in Dallas prior to their move here, noted that Taos style is positively eclectic, as they believe good design should be. “Art doesn’t have to speak to anyone or anything else in a room,” Jones said. “In fact, I think if you’re looking for a harmonious conversation in your decorating then you are losing a vibrant and individual look to your room.” Walker agreed. “If you’re consistently eclectic, then that’s your style. It’s far more timeless and sophisticated than going to a big-box store and selecting an ‘ensemble.’ When you collect things that you love, you’re injecting character into your home with the story behind each piece and the way that story resonated with you. And it will stay with you forever.
“It’s a much better design strategy to singularly choose your accessories,” he continued. “You create a unique look that is special to you.” So, go for it without trepidation. Note how the paintings pottery, and furniture work together. You can easily combine Mape’s custom cabinet featuring the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” motif, and make it work with Wagner’s painting and Kilborn’s vase – with the only common thread being the whimsy each piece brings. Sometimes your taste will result in a tableau that has common threads connecting them against a traditional backdrop. In either case, it’s your personal eye that brought beauty into your home. So while you’re browsing the shops and galleries of Taos, perhaps with the intent of acquiring pieces for your now or future Taos home, remember what Jones and Walker said. “You’re building a one-of-a-kind environment in your home. No one will duplicate you. Go with what you love and trust it’s enough to bring your three most essential art styles together,” said Walker. H E ’ S R I G H T . YOUR EYES WILL LOVE IT AS MUCH AS YOUR HEART DOES.

HANDCRAFTED DOORS OF THE SOUTHWEST BUILT IN THE TAOS TRADITION

DOORS DESIGNED AND BUILT BY DANIEL STREEBE OF ALL SIZES ARE ON DISPLAY AT HANDCRAFTED DOORS OF THE SOUTHWEST.
I N T A O S , there is a long tradition of handcrafting everything needed for life. The Pueblo people grew and made much of what they needed. When Taos was a remote outpost in the Spanish Empire, people used wood available in the nearby forests to make furniture and doors for their homes. The Streebe family has continued this tradition, making doors since 1958 when Streebe Doors opened in downtown Taos. Daniel Streebe grew up in Taos around the family business; his mom is from a longtime Taos family. When he finished school, his father wanted to retire and asked Daniel if he would be interested in taking over the business. “I thought I would try it for a year and see how I liked it,” says Streebe. That was 31 years ago, and he is still making unique handcrafted doors in traditional Southwest style. “It’s helped me support my family all those years,” he says. Taos-style doors Streebe changed the name of the business to Handcrafted Doors of the Southwest to reflect the work he does in his workshop. His geometric designs are inspired by traditional motifs he has seen on doors and gates locally. His doors are so authentic that have been mistaken for historic antiques. He builds handcrafted custom exterior and interior doors, along with garden gates. More than half of the doors he has built are designed to fit the nonstandard doorway sizes of historic homes. The doors are full of texture and color: deep blues and greens, turquoise and red. Each one has a feel of history and a sense of the Southwest about it. In the gallery, there are gorgeous doors nearing completion,
each one a custom order built to the specifications and tastes of the person purchasing the door. Just finished is an interior door with a deep glossy red finish and a zigzag design created by Streebe. “It could be a lighting design,” he says. It calls to mind universal images found across time and in petroglyphs near the Río Grande. Also in the gallery are miniature door samples that allow people to begin to visualize the designs, colors and details of their new door. Streebe doesn’t like wasting any wood, so he uses scraps to make these samples, each one with patterns, colors and finely crafted details. He sometimes turns scraps into little works of art. In the past, he explored other kinds of art like painting, but found he really loved creating with wood. “I love to build. I have another workshop at home,” says Streebe. “I like working for myself. It is a blessing to have the freedom to create.” Designing a handcrafted door When someone contacts Streebe about purchasing a custom door, they usually have an idea in mind. After they visit the gallery or look at examples on his website, their perspective broadens as they see the range of colors, designs and hardware that can be combined to create a door that is unique for them. “Sometimes people feel confused at some point in the process, because there are so many choices,” says Streebe. “Ultimately they figure out exactly what they want in terms of wood, design, color and decoration.” All the doors are made from solid wood with pine being a popular choice, along with Douglas fir, alder and others. “A custom door adds value to a home,” he says. “You can feel the solid quality of real wood in each one.”
DANIEL STREEBE AT HIS EL PRADO WORKSHOP.
Finding the workshop People see Streebe’s Handcrafted Doors of the Southwest sign along the Paseo del Pueblo Norte in El Prado and stop in or hear about his work from a friend. People also find Handcrafted Doors of the Southwest through his website or on Facebook. He’s worked with many local contractors over the years as they build or renovate homes. “Many people who come to Taos want to incorporate something unique inside their homes that reflects the history of Taos,” he says. And although traditional designs remain popular, Streebe also sees a trend toward retro and modern designs that incorporate straight lines. Doorway dimensions vary in historic homes, while those built since 1970 have more standard dimensions. “I have a fascination with old doors from all over the world. I’d love to write about doors,” says Streebe. Indeed, his work has already been featured in a 2008 book called “Old World Interiors: A Modern Interpretation” by David Naylor. Streebe’s finely crafted coffer ceiling designs with Moorish-influenced geometric squares are featured in the book. When people buy an ornamental custom piece by Daniel Streebe, they become part of the long history in Taos of bringing handcrafted beauty into their homes. DESTINATION HOME
This is more than a home… it’s an experience. Located between Taos and Arroyo Seco, these 9.7 acres against the backdrop of the Sangre de Cristo mountains deliver all the ingredients of the ideal southwest escape. Miles of breathtaking views beyond the courtyard walls present a contrast to the privacy of the gardens and the comfort of classic adobe design. There may not be a property in Northern New Mexico to rival the high standards thoughtfully crafted into every inch of this home. The care in construction, the arrangement of the rooms and all the extras, not to mention the simple and sophisticated aesthetics of this creation are a tribute to the skills of Taos architect Daniel William Hoffman. This house is for living. Hoffman’s unique talent for blending utility and luxury effortlessly achieves what most exclusive properties strive for, but few achieve. That is what truly sets this property apart. Add to that a design which reflects the best of southwest style and you have a dream location in one of the most desired locations in the country. A welcoming entrance leads through lavish gardens to a shady, cool portal and thick traditional doors that hint at the authenticity awaiting within the walls of the house, where all of the defining features of New Mexico living are vividly honored. Main living areas give subtle cues to designate function, a tasteful variation on the modern great-room design and one that reflects the rambling charm known to historic properties around our area. This version of an open floor plan flows from the gracious dining arrangement to a relaxed living space with one of the home’s multiple Kiva fireplaces. The upscale kitchen combines granite countertops with a nicho as a focal point and exposed beams and corbels. The kitchen opens off the dining area while maintaining its own identity, just waiting for a tamalemaking celebration. The private areas of this home further extend the traditional and artful plan. The master bedroom is accessed through an art gallery set apart by archways and complete with delicate lighting fixtures to enhance the viewing experience. The four bedrooms offer comfort with exquisite surroundings. Each overlooks the central courtyard, creating a communal feel that echoes days gone by while being so welcoming that one may never want to get out of bed. En suite baths make privacy and comfort a priority. A fitness room and a lap pool support an active lifestyle and add to the all-inclusive features of this complex. The pool frames one side of the inner courtyard with walls of windows and French doors that offer a choice of private garden views or majestic mountains. A handsomely finished office displays much sought-after flexibility for a work-fromhome lifestyle and can also serve as an additional bedroom or a studio. continues on p. 48

First-class to the last detail. “You don’t see this level of quality in many homes, even expensive homes,” says Diane Enright, associate broker with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Taos Real Estate. The modern kitchen is appointed with high-end appliances and fixtures. That interior courtyard is floored with genuine porphyry granite. The luxurious patios echo the focus of the interior design with their many options for gathering and relaxing. Those lush, mature gardens boast a peaceful koi pond and a fountain to enhance the experience of leisure in an unparalleled union of comfort and the natural world that plays such an essential role in life here in the Enchanted Circle.
A bright and sunny, 500-square-foot guest house replicates the stylishness of the main house and is constructed with materials clearly chosen for maximum appeal as well as longevity. Fully independent with one bedroom, a kitchen, a bathroom, and another Kiva fireplace, the guest house provides visitors with all the comforts of home and easy access to the main house with its full range of amenities. A large dog run installed on the property ensures that those friends and family members with paws and lots of energy are not left out of the plan. A celebration of artistry and style, this home undeniably represents the best of the local culture, from the natural energy efficiency of the adobe construction to the convenient proximity to historic downtown Taos, the mountain village of Arroyo Seco, and Taos Ski Valley.
Enjoyment of the outdoors is made richer by the imaginative, picturesque, and don’t forget functional, natural elements of the stunning landscaping as it draws together trees, flowering shrubs, and perennials that are right at home in this high-desert climate. Coved ceilings, Vigas, Kiva fireplaces, and tiled floors accentuate the authenticity of design and experience. Distinct spaces for art encourage the love of creativity that has come to honor the history of this isolated valley where artistic imagination is a necessity. Art is a way of life in our diverse community, surrounded as it is with spectacular inspiration. It can be difficult to find a property that echoes the refined taste of a knowledgeable collector, but this one is the perfect environment for an artistic lifestyle appreciative of its setting in every way.

STYLIN’ WITH STONE THE ART OF HOME DESIGN
THE SPECTACULAR TOURMALINE QUARTZITE RANGE PANEL IS FRAMED WITH TUMBLED CREMA VOSSCIONE LIMESTONE IN A 2”X4” BRICK PATTERN.
I N R E C E N T Y E A R S , natural stone has taken a back seat in the trend toward contemporary design with its use of concrete, porcelain and the many shades of gray. I happen to love natural materials, so I was thrilled when my most recent clients turned out to be geologists with a lifelong passion for rocks and a desire for unique stone treatments throughout their house. The design process had scarcely begun when enthusiasm jumped the gun, driving a discussion of the stone fireplace that was to anchor the Great Room. We looked at all the usual regional treatments (sandstone, river rock and granite) but they all fell short, leaving me with the task of finding a stone that had never been used here. (This sort of thing happens to me all the time.) The mystery material appeared, right under my feet, on a trail run in the foothills of the Picuris Mountains. I was quite familiar with this dominant stone from a previous project high above Tierra Blanca: geologists told me it was San Miguel quartzite, and explained that the
54

entire Picuris range is basically a big lump of quartzite, shaped by wind and rain, and considerably older than the granite Rockies. Have you ever noticed the colorful rock that falls into the Río Grande south of Pilar – pink, purple, red, white and gray? That’s the stuff. But since quartzite typically breaks into jagged pieces, roadside rockfall just wasn’t going to work. Fortunately, I had access to a canyon filled with water-smoothed material of all sizes. I collected some samples and presented them, adding one proviso: the homeowners would have to come with me to handpick the stone and help me load it. A few months later, and after much oohing and aahing, we had six truckloads stockpiled. Loveless Stone and Tile cut the rough pieces into workable thicknesses and did a masterly installation the following winter; I prepared a rough-hewn spruce mantlepiece; and Loveless added a five-inch hearth of water-rippled New Mexico sandstone. The result: a one-of-a-kind fireplace, complete with a great story to tell!

THIS SCULPTURESTONE TUB BY MTI IS SET OFF BY A FASCINATION QUARTZITE VALVE DECK AND WINDOWSILL, A SEAGRASS LIMESTONE WAINSCOT, AND A CLASSIC LIMESTONE FLOOR. THE SCONCES ARE BY HUBBARDTON FORGE.
That was quite a start to our stone project – but ahead of us lay all the countertops, splashes, shower surrounds and bathroom floors. The owners liked the idea of using sandstone countertops in the guest baths (available aqui en Taos), but they still wanted exotics for the kitchen and master bath. Once again, none of the slabs in New Mexico showrooms rang the geologists’ bell. But my clients lived in Houston, a port-of-entry for vast amounts of stone from around the world. When they made the rounds of “Granite Row” they soon came up with – guess what – some spectacular quartzite slabs. The kitchen material, dubbed “tourmaline,” looked amazingly like an abstract expressionist painting, and was so dynamic that I questioned whether I could make it work in a somewhat traditional setting. In a New York City loft, no problem - but in El Salto? I had my doubts. I needed to find a backsplash that would add some texture to soften the quartzite’s impact, while re-
maining in the background and letting the artwork speak. Finding a good color match was difficult, but eventually I found an off-white tumbled marble in a two-by-four brick pattern that provided the necessary bridge to the surrounding wood and plaster finishes. The master bath proved to be a bigger challenge. The gorgeous “fascination” slabs featured a colorful wave pattern that demanded a gray surround – and ultimately led to a contemporary treatment of the entire space. I found a honed 16-inch gray-green limestone tile called “seagrass” that was laced with white fossils – it perfectly complemented the countertop and delighted the owners. We used four-inch cuts for the backsplash, three-inch squares for a slipproof shower floor and full-size pieces for the shower walls and the wainscot behind the free-standing tub. Half-inch white limestone liners frame the backsplash and wainscot, and for a floor we used a honed 18-inch classic limestone.
THE GORGEOUS QUARTZITE COUNTERTOP CALLED FOR A NEUTRAL GRAY BACKSPLASH. SEAFOAM LIMESTONE WAS THE PERFECT FIND, WITH ITS WHITE FOSSILS AND A CREMA VOSSCIONE LINER.

Taos County73
COMMUNITY PROFILE
TAOS COUNTY COMMUNITY PROFILE
The boundaries of Taos County stretch from the Colorado border on the north to the Cañón del Río Grande on the south. Containing 2,203 square miles, the 7,000-foothigh Taos Valley is bounded in the east by the soaring Sangre de Cristos of the southern Rockies and in the west by the lower Tusas Range. The terrain crosses a half-dozen ecological zones, from high-alpine tundra to sage grasslands; thus, weather is often localized. The Río Grande carves a deep gorge down the center of the valley, which is dotted with old volcanic cones and necks. Tribal members of Picuris Pueblo have lived above the Río Pueblo near Peñasco for centuries. Taos Pueblo is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the United States and the northernmost of the 19 Río Grande pueblos. Pueblo history traces back some 1,000 years – centuries before the first Europeans arrived in the late 1500s. These conquistadors claimed the land for Spain, and soon Spanish and Mexican land grantees settled in the Taos area. Ancestral acequias still divert water from seven watersheds along the Sangre de Cristo front into pastures, fields and orchards.
Roughly 50 percent of Taos County’s 1,444,480 acres is federal land, primarily U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. About 38 percent of the county is private. Native Americans own 4.3 percent, and state lands make up 6.7 percent. Federal lands accommodate hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, ATV and snowmobiling, hunting and fishing. Golfers tee off at Taos Country Club and Valle Escondido; skiers and snowboarders carve up Taos Ski Valley and Sipapu Ski Area. Government jobs predominate in the local economy and, in the last several decades, tourism has replaced agriculture as a primary economic driver. Real estate and home construction provide revenues and jobs. Visitors come to experience the tri-culture atmosphere, the hundred-mile views and adobe stylings – and many return for good. The county is home to a significant number of retirees, many of whom have already purchased second homes. It is also home to several offthe-grid communities west of the Río Grande, including the Earthships of the Greater World Community.

Town of Taos74
COMMUNITY PROFILE
TOWN OF TAOS
COMMUNITY PROFILE
The 5.4 square miles of incorporated town of Taos spread out beneath the shadow of Pueblo Peak (12,305), bounded roughly by the Río Lucero on the north and Río Grande de Ranchos on the south. At 7,000 feet in elevation, Taos experiences winter lows in the single digits and summer highs in the low 90s. Taos Puebloans inhabited the sage-piñón-juniper mountain front for several centuries before Spanish explorers arrived around 1600. Soon, Spanish settlers returned, armed with land grant decrees from the king. The central Plaza became the hub of activity and the site of conflicts — often bloody — between the Spanish, natives and late-arriving Americans. Long isolated from the outside world, Taos began to grow in the 1960s with an influx of hippies to nearby communes. Taos continues to grow to this day with young ski bums and rafters and older retirees.
66
Commercial activity centers on the Plaza area and along north and south ends of Paseo del Pueblo, the main thoroughfare. A popular home for Southwest artists, Taos boasts dozens of galleries, boutiques and craft shops – plus renowned studio tours and arts and crafts festivals. Dozens of restaurants serve up wide varieties of cuisine; the Northern New Mexico red-sauce dishes are renowned. Just south of town in Ranchos de Taos sits St. Francis de Asís Catholic Church, reputed to be the most-photographed church in America. The Catholic influence can be seen in the cemeteries, roadside descansos and neighborhood churches called capillas and moradas. The locals speak a patois of Castilian Spanish and English. As the county seat, Taos is home to the county government and district courts. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management have a strong presence in town. On the outskirts of town, pastures, fields and gardens irrigated by ancestral acequias extend out from the rivers and streams.

Taos Ski Valley75
COMMUNITY PROFILE
TAOS SKI VALLEY COMMUNITY PROFILE
Taos Ski Valley sits at the head of the Rio Hondo Canyon, surrounded by Carson National Forest in what is known as the La Cal Basin. The state’s highest peak, Wheeler Peak (13,167), rises to the east, and the ridge off Kachina Peak (12,481) sets the western boundary. The climate is montane and alpine, with winter lows below zero and summer highs in the 70s. The economy of the area is dominated by Taos Ski Valley, a world-class winter sports mountain that is known for its steep trails and an average of 300 inches of snowfall. The basin first attracted settlement when gold and copper were discovered in the early 1900s. Founders Ernie and Rhoda Blake put up the first ski lift in 1956 and, until 2013, the family owned the resort. In 2013, the family sold the mountain and facilities to former hedge fund manager Louis Bacon, who has begun upgrades and renovations including the new Kachina Peak lift. The base area, at 9,200 feet elevation, includes day and overnight facilities. The mountain has 15 lifts and 110 trails, with a total vertical drop of more than 3,000 feet. Typically, about 250,000 skiers and snowboarders (admitted in 2010) hit the slopes every year. Other winter
activities include snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country and back-country skiing, and tubing. In the summer, the main chairlift takes hikers, mountain bikers and sightseers to mid-mountain. The Village of Taos Ski Valley, incorporated in 1996, encompasses 2.3 square miles in the valley and administers municipal services, such as water, sewer and police.

COMMUNITY PROFILE
RED RIVER COMMUNITY PROFILE
The town of Red River bustles along the Red River, a mountain tributary to the Río Grande. The settlement’s elevation is 8,750 feet, and it’s surrounded by Carson National Forest and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The climate ranges from winter lows below 0 to summer highs in the 70s. Thunderstorms often roll through on summer afternoons. Gold miners first settled the area in the mid-1800s. These days, the local economy relies upon winter tourists who ski and snowboard, plus summer tourists who come to hike, mountain bike, drive ATVs and relax in the cool temperatures. Some 1,200 seasonal homes house many of these visitors. Red River Ski Area rises to the south of town with a vertical drop of 1,600 feet. The mountain includes 58 trails and six lifts on 290 acres and typically attracts more than 120,000 ticket buyers in a winter season. The ski area offers a popular Aerial Ropes Course and the Pioneer Flyer, a small seated-type zip line. In the summer, lifts run for mountain bikers, hikers and sightseers.

CLOSING STATEMENT funky, out of the late 60s or early 70s with poured concrete flooring, Mexican tile counter tops and appliances out of a different era when stainless steel was not mandated. We have all shapes and sizes as our style does not fit into one box… the way I think it does in Santa Fe. To me, I prefer talking about the freedom one has within Taos style. Here one finds creativity in housing materials, size, and design with lifestyle in mind. There are few limits on what one can do unless they are contained in what we call CC & Rs or Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions, which run with the land. Or, in Town, with zoning codes. We have adobe homes, frame homes, those made of straw bale and others made of soda bottles and beer cans. Heck, we have folks living in teepees and hogans and earth ships. There are all kinds of Taos style when it comes to housing materials and construction. The freedom of choice, look, and lifestyle we treasure here gets lost if you happen to own property in the Historic District and want to change the appearance of your home. Or put fencing where there was none before. Then, any and all exterior changes have to be approved by a civilian appointed review board known as the Historic Preservation Commission. And, frankly, that is not a place one wants to be because they have taken more power then they ought to have, and we tasted it first hand.
TAOS STYLE… BY HARVEY BLAUSTEIN
To me, a former attorney, law is to be followed and those who read it ought to be able to come away with an understanding of what limits are and what is allowed. We found the contrary - and maybe that is why so many folks choose to dodge this commission and just do their thing. Lack of enforcement is part of the charm of Taos. Or so I say. We wanted to swap out some real old, ugly, not well fitting and non-matching windows for some new ones of high quality. When we bought the house it had fairly new divided light windows on the backside of the house but plain old single pane top and single pane bottom below ones in the front. The relevant ordinance governing windows in the Historic District says that divided light windows are to be encour-
Those of you who may read this column regularly know by now my standard answer to the question of what Taos style is all about. Simply, my view is that Taos has no style, which is what I treasure about it. Among many things. But Chris Baker, the publisher of this fine magazine, would stress to me that my writings always need to be about housing, about real estate, for that is what this publication is all about. So I go deeper into the question of what Taos style is all about. My wife, who is an artist, an awesome interior design person, who just finished a smashing renovation of what we now call home on Placitas, would have me write about the different counter tops that one finds here, the different floorings, about plumbing and lighting fixtures and the different feels and looks one can create. She would talk about esthetic and feel. That is what she knows so well and could go on forever on each topic. She has lived them all for the last year or more. Or the different approaches to home interiors. Today, on the real estate tour, I saw a magnificent home, with incredible grounds on large acreage for $2.6M, and worth every penny. And sometimes we see Taos
aged. I thought I knew what that word meant but no definition I ever saw listed mandated as a synonym. This august body interpreted as I indicate and told us what type of divided light window we had to install. And the one they picked did not match the back – which had divided light windows! We had the same problem with fencing. The board does stifle creativity, which is what this town is all about. Jimmy Cisneros, of Gecko Landscaping, wanted to install a woven sheet metal fence that is really cool but looks old and worn after he acid washes it. We were told that the Preservation Commission would only approve latilla. So we just went for latilla because we wanted fencing where none had existed. Again, we lost our freedom of choice and expression because others have a vision they think is better than ours. I love to see what people create around here using little or no money because there ain’t much to be had in Taos. And when you cut to the bone, one finds that it isn’t all about cash. It is about what one can conceive and then create – except, of course, if you live in the Historic District. Harvey Blaustein is a retired attorney and local real estate broker.
