“The next year he came back just to visit us and he talked us into coming to Michigan.” So Lukes and his brother moved to Paris and applied for student visas. While they waited, they worked in warehouses. Once the visas came through, they boarded a prop plane in Brussels and headed to the United States. That was Aug. 21, 1968. As the two Czech boys flew across the ocean, Russian tanks rolled into Prague to quash the Prague Spring revolt and reestablish Soviet control. The Lukes brothers heard about the invasion when they landed in New York. “We didn’t know what to do and we couldn’t call our parents right away,” said Lukes. “In a week, we called them and they told us not to come back, there was nothing in Czechoslovakia for us. “I can’t imagine how difficult it was for them to tell us that because they might never see us again,” he said. “But it was fate that it happened that way. And, it eventually led to our parents coming to live in California some years later.” The two Lukes boys learned English while living the next years in Michigan. Pavel cut his teeth as a builder-developer of some 300 buildings: “I loved the creativity of developing a project, and found real satisfaction in providing a home for human beings.” He then moved on to southern California where, in 1973, the final piece of fate’s puzzle came clear in a ski magazine.

“In the years after, I came skiing in Taos a lot,” said Lukes, who became an American citizen in 1979 and finally returned to his home country for a visit in the mid-1980s. “During one visit, I suddenly decided that this was where I wanted to move and where I wanted to work for myself.”
Fate reaches down and taps us all on the shoulder at one time or another during our lives. It gives us a hint, shows us the way, offers options for change.
Taos became his permanent home in 1994, and Dreamcatcher Realty took shape. He not only brought years of real estate experience to bear, but also a life of learning how to adapt to unfamiliar surroundings and diverse types of people.
For Taos real estate broker Pavel Lukes, a couple of those moments in his life paved his route from Soviet Czechoslovakia to Taos, New Mexico. Once showed the way here, Lukes found that that Taos was where he was supposed to be.
“That produced my focus on the client that has served us well for more than 20 years in Taos,” Lukes said. “We listen well and never think about the money. We are not drive by greed and profit, which often can translate into cheating.”
His journey started as a kid in Prague where, despite Soviet restrictions, he got ahold of “hidden literature” about the Old West in the United States – and fell in love with the stories about cowboys, Indians and frontiersmen.
While Dreamcatcher has always had a large number of properties that they represent – “like merchandise on the shelf” -- Lukes insists that he and his associated do not drive customers to their listings exclusively.
“That stuff just resonated with me since I was a kid,” said Lukes during a recent interview at Dreamcatcher Realty.
REALTOR PROFILE
Already a skier in Czechoslovakia, Lukes read a story about a town where “cowboys, Indians and hippies all lived in the same place.” He flew to Denver, where he hopped a bus on a snowy night to Taos, ostensibly for a ski vacation.
The next moment came when Lukes, at 16, had a chance meeting with a professor from the University of Michigan who was in Prague for a conference – and staying in the same apartment house where the Lukes family lived. The professor spoke English and French, and wanted to get to know some Czech people. Lukes father spoke French, so the two struck up an acquaintance. “After he got to know us, he kept telling my brother and I, ‘Come to America, come to America and go to school,’” Lukes said.
“It’s critical in this company to spent time with clients and listen to what they want,” he said. “We never tell them that we know better what they want. This philosophy, what you might call a mission statement, has served use well here. PHOTO BY KATHARINE EGLI I understand that your family has deep roots in Taos. How long has your family been here? I trace my family back to 1660 and Antonio de Córdova on my father’s side. The family came from Spain to Northern New Mexico and by 1680, they were living in the Taos and Española areas. The Martinez family on my mother’s side, I trace back to 1598 and they have lived here ever since. You helped start Taos Feeds Taos more than 30 years ago. Can you tell us how the program first began? We have been in existence for 32 years. Jim Ulmer asked me what I thought and together we went to National Guard headquarters to see General Baca. He immediately gave us his blessing to use the facility and the equipment. It was a slow start, but Jim’s dream was to continue to do this for as long as God permitted us. Little by little, Jim involved organizations to help, including the VFW, Kiwanis, Lions, etc. and all Taos local schools. Has the program made a difference for Taos families at the holidays? Yes, I believe it has. To date, we have had a lot of elders thank us for doing this. They tell us that in the past, it was a choice of a small present for the grandchild or food. Now they can do both.

What other ways have you been involved in the community? I was a board member of Kit Carson Electric and helped bring a program called “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” for the needy here. I was instrumental in bringing the VA Clinic to Taos and have been working with Senator Carlos Cisneros and Taos County Commissioners on a Veteran Cemetery for Taos County. I am involved with Taos Feeds Taos and veterans. I help veterans get their benefits and I am the Commander of the Disabled American Veteran’s Chapter 12 here in Taos. I am member of Congressman Ben Ray Luján’s Board for Veterans for District Three

Can you tell us about how you have served your country? I served in the Army National Guard in the Taos Unit from 1967-1980. In 1980 I was on active duty in the 5th Army with the New Mexico National Guard in Taos, until I retired in 2004. So my total service was 34.5 years in the military. We were activated to the prison riots in 1980. It was the worst prison riot in the nation; we saw and dealt with more bloodshed than had ever been seen. We also were called to the riots in Albuquerque and to fight several fires in the Taos and Los Alamos counties. ENCHANTED HOMES VOL. CXVIII

What kind of work have you done in your life? Ranching, retail clerk at local groceries stores and journeyman for a New Mexico electric company. In the military, I was a Private all the way up to a First Sergeant. I’ve done lots of volunteer work. What do you most appreciate about Taos? My family and the people here in Taos. I appreciate the community and the beautiful mountains, rivers and lakes and being able to enjoy the open space to ride horses and go fishing. I enjoy being able to work with people in our community and preserving our local history. What makes Taos a special place to be for the holiday season? Taos is unique, we were all taught traditions that have been passed to us from our ancestors. We begin the season with Advent, preparing for the birth of the Christ child. We still prepare traditional foods such as tamales, empanadas, posole and chicos. We take part in church functions such as posadas and we also participate with our neighbors at the Taos Pueblo. We take great pride in sharing with others in need through our program Taos Feeds Taos. We invite all our locals and newcomers to participate in this great program. had a night before Christmas celebration back at her place after we all froze our butts off at the Pueblo, watching the processional. We did that for several years but when Bonnie and Josh moved from there to a real house on Burch Street some of that charm was lost. That house had central heat – something Josh never really wanted. And he couldn’t walk out his door and hike into the wilderness as before. But I digress. We then took it upon ourselves to host a holiday gathering. And our Christmas Eves always started at the Pueblo. I told all the newbies to put on all the clothes they owned because it sure could be cold. Back then it seemed colder in the village than these past few years but maybe it’s just a distorted memory. And after the procession was completed, and the people went off to the church, we made a beeline to our cars before the road out of the Pueblo got congested. For me the holidays mean fire. Warmth. Love of family and friends. And the blessings of having a real house that is comfortable and allows for us to share with others. We cannot forget that not everyone has what we have – and we don’t all have equally. But compared to those struggling to survive in places around the world, we have it made in the shade. For me the holidays mean food, prepared in our home or the homes of family and friends. Special foods that we don’t eat all year long. Foods that we can all share and oh how blessed we are for the bounty we share. I must admit that as disciplined as I am all year long it is hard to not indulge in the sweets of the season. For me the holidays mean fireworks. I so love to go to the Ski Valley and stand and watch the colors and shapes explode against the backdrop of a white canvas supplied by Mother Nature. It does get cold standing there but to me it’s as much fun as the fireworks on the 4th of July put on in
