REALTOR PROFILE SUSTAINABLE LIVING As buyers look at houses, they are conscious of the features that ensure the home will be sustainable over time. “People are very interested in solar power to help with rising utility bills,” observes Wardlow. “If they are building a new home, they want to orient the house to take advantage of passive and active solar possibilities.” Other concerns like adequate insulation to make the home less costly to heat are also mentioned. Buyers are interested in features like water catchment systems to help grow vegetable gardens, flowers and trees in the sage-covered landscape. Wardlow points out that newcomers see the advantages of long-standing traditions like growing your own food and having thick adobe walls, just like the original families of the Taos Valley did. SPRING According to Wardlow, April and May are the busiest times for listings. “Sellers are getting their houses ready to go – it is a pretty exciting time,” says Wardlow. “Then the

buyers come primarily between June and October.”o MORGAN TIMMS

PENNY WARDLOW CENTURY 21 SUCCESS BY CINDY BROWN

Realtor Pennie Herrera Wardlow has deep roots in Taos. She was born in the family home where she lives now. Those who came before her constructed the home with hand-made adobe bricks and wood harvested from the nearby mountains that were used for vigas and latillas. “This land always belonged to our family. My great-great grandfather was Carlos Prando. He came from Italy as Carlos Prandi; the spelling of his name was changed due to Spanish influence. The Italianos trail is named for him,” says Wardlow. She adds that the Valdez area was first called San Antonio. But there was also another place in New Mexico with the same name. When the mail got misdirected, people would say send it to Valdez, the post master who was Wardlow’s ancestor. Soon the area became known as Valdez, although the church is still called San Antonio. With her long experience here and knowledge about the community, Wardlow brings a special set of skills to help her buyers and sellers. She has remodeled many old adobes and can help imagine the possibilities for remaking an old adobe house into a home for a new family. “I have 25 years of knowledge and experience working with contractors. I’ve learned how to have a bigger view of the potential when remodeling a home. For example, I can help people figure out how to reconfigure a home with small rooms to feel more open and spacious,” says Wardlow. RESPECT AND PATIENCE In addition to Wardlow’s knowledge, she brings a desire to treat each client with respect to her transactions. Her clients say that Wardlow is a great communicator and always treats them like they are buying a million-dollar home, even if they are looking at a $10,000 piece of land or a modest house. “One satisfying aspect of my work is that many of the buyers and sellers I work with become friends,” she says. Most of her business comes through referrals from people who are happy with the experience they had working with Wardlow. She is committed to listening carefully to the needs and desires of her clients and also feels comfortable asking if she might show them homes or land in an area she thinks they will like. She has the patience to go with clients to see many houses in different parts of town and help them figure out where they feel most comfortable. “I’ve purchased numerous properties over the years and Pennie Wardlow is by far my favorite agent,” says Michael Cobb. “She’s personable, kind, ethical, understanding and knows Taos so well. Pennie is helpful and attentive with every stage of the process.”

In helping sellers to prepare their homes for sale, Wardlow first points out all the good qualities of the home. If people are open to input, she will show them other listings that have sold and will explain some of the steps in making the house visually appealing, so that it shows in the best possible light. “A key concept is to present the house so that a buyer can see themselves and their things there,” says Wardlow. “That might mean putting away some furniture, personal photos or even artwork that could distract the potential buyer from seeing the house itself.” As Wardlow says, in this case - less is more. A PASSION FOR THE RIGHTS AND WELL-BEING OF ANIMALS AND CHILDREN In addition to her real estate career, Wardlow is well-known in the community for her work with animals and children. She is on the board at the Taos Integrated School of the Arts (TISA) and brings animals to school so that students can learn about pet care and take that knowledge home to share with their families. When Wardlow became interested in animal welfare, she attended a training at Best Friends, an animal advocacy group, in Seattle. There she become convinced that the most important thing she could do to reduce animal overpopulation was to provide low-cost spay and neuter services and to educate youth. She founded Four Corners Animal League as a nonprofit in October 2000 and has been active on behalf of animals ever since. She’s just been invited by the New Mexico Veterinary Board to serve on New Mexico Shelter Committee, which is putting together standards for all shelters and working on more spay-neuter programs. On a daily basis, Wardlow is participating in efforts to make the lives of animals better. Recently, she was arranging for a transfer of 15 puppies to Colorado Puppy Rescue. She gets frequent calls from people asking questions like, “I found a dog that no one is claiming and Stray Hearts is full. What should I do?” In that case, Wardlow helped work out a plan to board the dog at Taos Vet for a few days to allow more time to figure out a more long-term solution. “All of the veterinarians are so helpful. Any time we need emergency care for an animal, they are there for us,” she says. Wardlow helps to check on reports of animal abuse and recently advised the Sheriff’s Department, which was relocating llamas, ducks and chickens that had been neglected. In her experience, she has seen that the Sheriff’s Animal Control officer is a great asset to the community. Working in cooperation with Stray Hearts and other organizations, Wardlow helps find medical services or dog/cat food for animals in need. She continues to coordinate the low-cost spay neuter program for Taos County. She explains, “If a dog has become a stray and has been at the shelter, Stray Hearts requires that they be spayed or neutered before they are returned to their homes. If a family can’t afford the procedure, Four Corners Animal League will see that the pet is spayed or neutered, so can be picked it up and returned home.” In the past, she volunteered to help kids at the Residential Treatment Center in Taos. The program provided care for kids, usually between the ages of five and 13 who had been removed from their homes due to abuse. “The kids were from all over New Mexico. Actress Julia Roberts asked to become involved and we took the kids shopping for toys. The kids were happy to have attention and interest,” recalls Wardlo

Living Green, Building Sustainable, Thinking Toward The Future Green takes on many faces. Solar energy, passive & active, re-cycled materials, off-the-grid, sustainable. It’s about being friendly with your environment and being pro-active in thinking about the future. Taos can claim itself the Solar Capital of the Southwest with 360 days of sunshine, where the radio station is solar powered, as well as the Internet provider with solar wireless connection. Taos is a place where ecological sustainability has made the news since Mike Reynolds introduced his first beer can house and earthship. The original adobe mud hacienda built centuries ago were made from the earth with thick walls keeping cool in summer and warm in winter. All of us can help to sustain our environment. It is available and affordable. Rain catchment systems taking gray water to your garden & trees, trombe walls capturing heat with southern exposure windows, vents & heat mass, alternative building

materials such as tires, pumice, rastra block & strawbale, all are adaptable means of being energy efficient. The Taos Pueblo and today’s condos all have common walls, common space, shared heating/cooling systems, shared water, rain water cisterns & solar panels. Condos are affordable, planned communities allowing for open space to sustain natural habitats, air quality & water resources. Xeriscaping adapts to the natural climate & environment. We live in a high mountain desert, where thoughtful landscaping can bring natural cooling. The initial trouble of establishing your plants would be well worth it. Check with a landscape architect for plants that are suited best for your property. We are not re-inventing the wheel. We are re-learning for economic, ecological and sustainable living. Consider Taos Land Trust who fosters open and productive lands for future generations. We have a chance to make a difference.

This isn’t a trophy home. It wasn’t built to impress visitors. In fact, it wasn’t ever intended to be sold. This home at 11 Turkey Springs Road in Valdez is a rare opportunity. The 5,000 square-foot passive solar homestead sits on 30 forested acres in the secluded Gallina Canyon neighborhood. Yet, it is just a short 13mile drive to Taos Ski Valley and Taos Regional Airport. As of press time, Taos Air charter flights regularly arrive from the tech hubs of Dallas and Austin, with talk of adding more connecting airports soon. The entirety of the property represents strong personal values: quiet family privacy, open creative space, and the lightest possible carbon footprint on the earth.

Roger Johnson and Martie Moreno don’t take a lot of photos. But they posed for this one, when the house was under construction in 1998. Behind them, the first story is poured with Pumice-Crete. On the second floor, the straw bale insulation is visible between the post-and-beam structure of the window. ENCHANTED HOMES CXXVI enchantedhomeseller.com

HOW IT BEGAN

Roger Johnson and Martie Moreno built the environmentally sustainable home in 1999 before LEED® standards were introduced. The home’s design engineer, Karlis Viceps, is now a LEED® Accredited Professional. The couple conceived of the idea for the home back in the 1980s. “We had been watching ‘60 Minutes’ and there was a segment on the Rocky Mountain Institut a more sensible way to be lighter on the environment. And you don’t have to live like Fred Flintstone,” Moreno said. The husband-and-wife team was inspired by the ideal of living eco-consciously without sacrificing modern conveniences. They got to work on researching sustainable building methods and materials. In that regard, they already had a pretty sharp arrow in their quiver. Johnson is a computer system designer. His professional experience includes work on sustainable environments for the Space Shuttle, the International Space Station and submarines. So for the build of the home, Johnson focused on the sustainable environment design. Moreno’s talents are well known throughout Taos. She began her career as a weaver and spinner, eventually leading her to create the once very popular Taos Sunflower yarn shop in Arroyo Seco. She brought these talents to bear in this home by creating the open-space, country-living look and feel. As the third leg of the stool, Viceps worked on the architectural design by providing the construction documents and sustainable systems integration in that design process. “This homestead is a superb example of a home that incorporates its own clean-energy systems and greenliving strategies running seamlessly in the background,” Viceps said. THE NET ZERO SPECS

Net zero-energy homes are highly desirable. They only consume as much energy as can be produced onsite (through renewable energy generation) and combined with energy efficiency techniques. In a recent article, CNBC.com estimated there are just 5,000 net-zero single-family homes today. But the appetite for these homes is shaking up the housing market. California alone could add 100,000 a year starting in 2020.

THE PANTRY WAS INSPIRED BY A VISIT TO GEORGIA O’KEEFFE’S HOME IN NEARBY ABIQUIÚ T h i s n e t z e r o - e n e r g y h o m e takes advantage of its southern orientation to capture, store and retain energy via solar panels, Trombe walls, and 17-inch thick Pumice-Crete® walls on the first floor. On the second floor, straw bale insulation is used. There is a traditional mud plaster on the walls throughout the house, with mica chips as the surface finishes. This beautiful finish uses natural materials from the region and avoids manufactured paints and primers. “The home exudes a natural comfort and extreme quiet in the home because of the sun’s warmth, superior insulation and sound-absorbing qualities of the materials and finishes,” said Viceps.

The artist/guest studio is connected via a covered walkway, while the solar greenhouse is attached to the main house. Both are built of recycled RASTRA insulated concrete forms. In harmony with the seasons, the home retains heat in the winter and keeps out heat in the summer –– all with considerable efficiency and natural techniques versus carbon-based heating and fluorocarbon air conditioning. OFF-GRID AND WIRED

The home is fully connected to phone, electrical and Internet service lines. So for those executives and consultants who want to be remote yet need to remain connected, this home offers that dual convenience. ENCHANTED HOMES CXXVI enchantedhomeseller.com

NATIVE PLANTS THAT REDUCE WATER USE BY DEANA MILLER

WITH SO MUCH FOCUS UPON THE IMPACTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE, WE ASKED OUR EXPERTS: CAN YOU NAME SEVEN NATIVE PLANTS THAT REDUCE WATER USAGE FOR OUR IMMEDIATE PRESENT AND OUR FUTURE? THE ANSWER, RESOUNDINGLY, WAS YES. HERE ARE SOME OF THEIR RECOMMENDATIONS.

48 Native Plants

1 / PERENNIALS These are the plantings that add visual excitement, vibrancy and personality to your residence via their colors. Petree recommends Rocky Mountain Penstemon, with its striking and long-lasting blooms and it ability to propagate. Gecko recommends a similar propagator, Giant Four O’Clock, whose low-lying blooms are a stunning accent in a xeriscape. Both are extremely lowmaintenance and drought resistant. 2 / GRASS Gecko recommends Giant Sacaton. “Sourced from Belen--so, you know how drought resistant it is--it can grow to almost six feet tall and has graceful and visually appealing seedheads,” said Cisneros. 3 / SHRUB A difficult category for our experts to narrow down, Petree was split between Apache Plume and Mountain Mahogany. So, too, was Gecko. Both agreed the gorgeous, white furry seedheads of Apache Plume, ubiquitous throughout town and along Taos Canyon, are a standard of native vegetation. And there was a consensus on the “super native” status of Mountain Mahogany--a member of the rose family–whose feathery plumes amidst its leaves are enchanting. 4 / SMALL TREE/BUSH Our experts both recommended the New Mexico Olive tree, also known as a desert olive tree, due to its thriving nature in hot, dry, sunny environments. It can be a showy ornamental planting on its own, and is equally suited for use as hedges. 5 / CACTUS Gecko went with Bear Grass, which resembles a Yucca without the thorniness. “It’s graceful, ornamental, but kid-and-pet friendly,” Cisneros noted. Though in southern New Mexico they can grow much bigger, expect them in the Taos environment to reach about two feet. 6 / TREES Petree resoundingly went with Rocky Mountain Juniper which, Okamoto noted, thrives at high elevations and dry climates. “Junipers and pinons can be seen everywhere, their medium reaching span thriving just as well in the wild as in your backyard,” she said. Gecko nominated the Southwest White Pine while acknowledging its finickiness in early stages of planting. “Once established, though, it is very tolerant of a hostile environment,” said Cisneros. 7 / DECIDUOUS AND FRUIT TREES Ah, the apricot tree, Gecko said. Virtually no-maintenance and, when left alone will explode with fruit, these trees are a dream in our area. So, Gecko noted, are grape vines. Petree nominated the Gambal Oak for this category, a nostalgic choice that is right at home in our high altitude and dry climate.

5 “The changes happening to our climate influence changes in plant selection,” said Patricia Okamoto, certified arborist at Petree Nursery & Greenhouses. “Plants that adapt to the new, inevitable fluctuations of extreme heat and cold include native and low water introductions.”

To the delight of skiers and outdoor enthusiasts, Taos had the snowiest winter in recent memory. But even those who chose to remain indoors nursing a mug of hot chocolate in front of the fire appreciated the abundant amount of moisture quenching the thirst of our parched landscape. Don’t get complacent, however, warned our panel of local arborist and landscaping experts. When looking at the many choices available for your yards and gardens, it’s always best to think native and drought-resistant.

Jimmy Cisneros of Gecko Landscaping, Inc., agreed. “See what mature plants and trees are on the llano, or up in the mountains. They’ve learned to adapt to harsh conditions. And keeping within recommendations for our zone 4 and 5 classifications, you can readily find beautiful and unique plantings that are both hardy and drought resistant.” Clearly, choices abound and you can enhance your property with perennial beauty, color, and even fruit while minding water usage and unnecessary maintenance. Speak with the experts in Taos and enjoy your landscape like never before.

¡BIENVENIDOS!

Welcome to Taos and the Land of Enchantment DOWNTOWN

The downtown area is a thriving center where visitors and locals hop from restaurants to galleries to gift shops to museums — all within a block of the Historic Taos Plaza. Looking for that perfect reminder of your great vacation in Northern New Mexico? After your Taos Pueblo tour and shopping visit, start at Taos Plaza and work your way in all four directions. The main commercial strip is along Paseo del Pueblo – Sur (south) and Norte (north). And check out the shops and museums crossing the Paseo – on Kit Carson Road, Bent Street, John Dunn House Shops, Civic Plaza Drive, Camino de la Placita. Then head a few steps west of the plaza to Ledoux Street, the oldest road and dedicated art district in town. For a town as small as Taos, there’s an amazing amount and variety of activities every night of the week — not surprising

GETTING STARTED Settle-in to new digs faster than you can say,‘Ahhh!’ Just moving to Taos or relocating to another home within Taos? Here’s a handy checklist of the basics to make sure you are all hooked up the first day in your new home.

ELECTRICITY Kit Carson Electric Cooperative (575758-2258) is the only power company in Taos. The office is located at 118 Cruz Alta Road. Many Taoseños get their power partially or fully from the sun. Check the phone book under “Solar” for providers of renewable energy equipment and supplies. Power is available in certain areas west of the Río Grande Gorge, but not everywhere in the area; in which case you could be off the grid and have to rely on solar, wind and often batteries to stay connected.

GAS & PROPANE New Mexico Gas Company is the sole provider of natural gas in the Taos area (888-664-2726). Their office is located at 1110 Gusdorf Road. Natural gas is not available in all areas, and you will have to pay to have your house hooked up if it is near but not already connected to a gas line. Propane is another gas option, and there are a half-dozen propane providers and dealers that can be located in the phone book under “Gas-Propane” or “Propane-Gas.” 64

ARROYO SECO

At 7,634 feet of elevation, Arroyo Seco is a small, vibrant village located seven miles northeast of the town of Taos and a little over 11 miles from Taos Ski Valley. It’s definitely worthwhile to stop and poke around the interesting shops featuring the work of local artisans. Hungry? Stop at The Taos Cow, the nationally recognized, award-winning ice cream shop with killer breakfasts and lunches. Or savor the local food at Abe’s Cantina y Cocina, which was named a culinary treasure by the New Mexico Tourism Department. Arroyo Seco is also known for outrageous Fourth of July parades. The Blake family sold the Ski Valley to billionaire conservationist Louis Bacon in 2013 and major improvements include the new Kachina Lift to the summit; the 65-room, 15-suite Blake hotel at the base; and in 2018-19, Taos’s first-ever highspeed detachable chairlift replacing Chairs 1 and 5 up Al’s Run; plus makeovers on the front and backside of the resort at The Bavarian, The Phoenix and the Taos Tent.

EL PRADO

El Prado has great views of Taos Mountain, Taos Pueblo’s Buffalo Pasture and large meadows bordered by restaurants, art studios, cafes and shops. Not too far away is the Millicent Rogers Museum, one of America’s most important resources of contemporary American Indian arts and culture and Southwestern art and design.

in El Toreon is Michael Wagener’s latest addition to Taos’ culinary landscape, the new sibling to his popular Aceq restaurant in Arroyo Seco.

RÍO GRANDE GORGE BRIDGE

Continuing north on Paseo del Pueblo Norte to the three-highway intersection of U.S. 64, State Road 522 (northbound) and State Road 150 (northeast, the Ski Valley Road to TSV), go west about seven miles to the Río Grande Gorge Bridge. The bridge offers a breath-taking view of the river flowing 600 feet below. Welcome to part of the Río Grande del Norte, which was declared a National Monument in March 2013. The 500-foot-long bridge is also listed among the Historic Highway Bridges of New Mexico.

RANCHOS DE TAOS

The centerpiece of Ranchos de Taos, south of the town, is San Francisco de Asís Catholic Church, one of the most photographed and painted churches in the U.S. Think Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams for starters. The historic plaza and surrounds feature small shops and restaurants to explore.

Yes, there is world-class skiing and snowboarding at TSV, and there is even more to do during the summer when hikers have their choice of trails, including those

NEWSPAPER

New residents are required to apply for a New Mexico driver’s license within 90 days of establishing residency. CenturyLink (877-255-5179) is the main provider for telephone service in the area. All major cell phone providers offer coverage in the Taos vicinity. Verizon (800256-4646) and T Mobile (800-201-3979) currently offer local number prefixes that will not cost long-distance charges when your number is called from a land line locally. Some cell phones will also not work in the Eagle Nest and Angel Fire areas. Check with your service provider to make sure you have the right phone to work in these areas. Look under “Cellular Telephone Equipment & Service” for businesses that sell phones.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

TAOS COUNTY COMMUNITY PROFILE

The boundaries of Taos County stretch from the Colorado border on the north to the Cañón del Río Grande on the south. Containing 2,203 square miles, the 7,000-foothigh Taos Valley is bounded in the east by the soaring Sangre de Cristos of the southern Rockies and in the west by the lower Tusas Range. The terrain crosses a half-dozen ecological zones, from high-alpine tundra to sage grasslands; thus, weather is often localized. The Río Grande carves a deep gorge down the center of the valley, which is dotted with old volcanic cones and necks. Tribal members of Picuris Pueblo have lived above the Río Pueblo near Peñasco for centuries. Taos Pueblo is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the United States and the northernmost of the 19 Río Grande pueblos. Pueblo history traces back some 1,000 years – centuries before the first Europeans arrived in the late 1500s. These conquistadors claimed the land for Spain, and soon Spanish and Mexican land grantees settled in the Taos area. Ancestral acequias still divert water from seven watersheds along the Sangre de Cristo front into pastures, fields and orchards.

Roughly 50 percent of Taos County’s 1,444,480 acres is federal land, primarily U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. About 38 percent of the county is private. Native Americans own 4.3 percent, and state lands make up 6.7 percent. Federal lands accommodate hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, ATV and snowmobiling, hunting and fishing. Golfers tee off at Taos Country Club and Valle Escondido; skiers and snowboarders carve up Taos Ski Valley and Sipapu Ski Area. Government jobs predominate in the local economy and, in the last several decades, tourism has replaced agriculture as a primary economic driver. Real estate and home construction provide revenues and jobs. Visitors come to experience the tri-culture atmosphere, the hundred-mile views and adobe stylings – and many return for good. The county is home to a significant number of retirees, many of whom have already purchased second homes. It is also home to several offthe-grid communities west of the Río Grande, including the Earthships of the Greater World Community.

TOWN OF TAOS

COMMUNITY PROFILE

The 5.4 square miles of incorporated town of Taos spread out beneath the shadow of Pueblo Peak (12,305), bounded roughly by the Río Lucero on the north and Río Grande de Ranchos on the south. At 7,000 feet in elevation, Taos experiences winter lows in the single digits and summer highs in the low 90s. Taos Puebloans inhabited the sage-piñón-juniper mountain front for several centuries before Spanish explorers arrived around 1600. Soon, Spanish settlers returned, armed with land grant decrees from the king. The central Plaza became the hub of activity and the site of conflicts — often bloody — between the Spanish, natives and late-arriving Americans. Long isolated from the outside world, Taos began to grow in the 1960s with an influx of hippies to nearby communes. Taos continues to grow to this day with young ski bums and rafters and older retirees.

Commercial activity centers on the Plaza area and along north and south ends of Paseo del Pueblo, the main thoroughfare. A popular home for Southwest artists, Taos boasts dozens of galleries, boutiques and craft shops – plus renowned studio tours and arts and crafts festivals. Dozens of restaurants serve up wide varieties of cuisine; the Northern New Mexico red-sauce dishes are renowned. Just south of town in Ranchos de Taos sits St. Francis de Asís Catholic Church, reputed to be the most-photographed church in America. The Catholic influence can be seen in the cemeteries, roadside descansos and neighborhood churches called capillas and moradas. The locals speak a patois of Castilian Spanish and English. As the county seat, Taos is home to the county government and district courts. The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management have a strong presence in town. On the outskirts of town, pastures, fields and gardens irrigated by ancestral acequias extend out from the rivers and streams.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

TAOS SKI VALLEY COMMUNITY PROFILE

Taos Ski Valley sits at the head of the Rio Hondo Canyon, surrounded by Carson National Forest in what is known as the La Cal Basin. The state’s highest peak, Wheeler Peak (13,167), rises to the east, and the ridge off Kachina Peak (12,481) sets the western boundary. The climate is montane and alpine, with winter lows below zero and summer highs in the 70s. The economy of the area is dominated by Taos Ski Valley, a world-class winter sports mountain that is known for its steep trails and an average of 300 inches of snowfall. The basin first attracted settlement when gold and copper were discovered in the early 1900s. Founders Ernie and Rhoda Blake put up the first ski lift in 1956 and, until 2013, the family owned the resort. In 2013, the family sold the mountain and facilities to former hedge fund manager Louis Bacon, who has begun upgrades and renovations including the new Kachina Peak lift. The base area, at 9,200 feet elevation, includes day and overnight facilities. The mountain has 15 lifts and 110 trails, with a total vertical drop of more than 3,000 feet. Typically, about 250,000 skiers and snowboarders (admitted in 2010) hit the slopes every year. Other winter

activities include snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country and back-country skiing, and tubing. In the summer, the main chairlift takes hikers, mountain bikers and sightseers to mid-mountain. The Village of Taos Ski Valley, incorporated in 1996, encompasses 2.3 square miles in the valley and administers municipal services, such as water, sewer and police.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

RED RIVER COMMUNITY PROFILE

The town of Red River bustles along the Red River, a mountain tributary to the Río Grande. The settlement’s elevation is 8,750 feet, and it’s surrounded by Carson National Forest and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The climate ranges from winter lows below 0 to summer highs in the 70s. Thunderstorms often roll through on summer afternoons. Gold miners first settled the area in the mid-1800s. These days, the local economy relies upon winter tourists who ski and snowboard, plus summer tourists who come to hike, mountain bike, drive ATVs and relax in the cool temperatures. Some 1,200 seasonal homes house many of these visitors. Red River Ski Area rises to the south of town with a vertical drop of 1,600 feet. The mountain includes 58 trails and six lifts on 290 acres and typically attracts more than 120,000 ticket buyers in a winter season. The ski area offers a popular Aerial Ropes Course and the Pioneer Flyer, a small seated-type zip line. In the summer, lifts run for mountain bikers, hikers and sightseers.

For a fee, wintertime enthusiasts can explore the 21 miles of groomed skiing and snowshoeing trails at Enchanted Forest Cross-Country Ski and Snowshoe Area, located 3 miles east of town. In town, private rental services lease out snowmobiles and ATVs, and horse trail-riding is a popular summer activity. The town of Red River administers municipal services for residents, visitors and nearly 200 businesses in the community. The town hosts a number of popular summertime events, beginning with the 3-day Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally that typically attracts more than 20,000 motorcyclists for the long weekend.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

ANGEL FIRE COMMUNITY PROFILE

Angel Fire is located at an elevation of 8,382 feet above sea level in the high Moreno Valley of Colfax County. The climate mirrors the Rocky Mountain setting that includes some of the highest peaks in New Mexico. About 210 inches of snow typically fall on Angel Fire in the winter, and average temperatures range between 0 and 30 degrees. Summertime highs rarely exceed 80 degrees, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms that cool off midday temperatures. Originally a favored hunting ground for the Utes, the Moreno Valley grew in the 1860s with the discovery of gold. Ranching dominated the local scene until the 1960s when the first ski runs of Angel Fire Resort were cut on Aqua Fria Peak. Tourism fuels the local economy although several large, working ranches still operate in the area.

PUBLIC RECREATION FACILITIES

Surrounded by U.S. National Forest and private ranches, the incorporated village of Angel Fire covers 18,450 acres. The village includes the general aviation Colfax County Airport and the Angel Fire Ski & Golf Resort, a private membership community overseen by the Association of Angel Fire Property Owners. The resort has more 2,000 private homes, a 500-acre ski and snowboard mountain, a destination zip line, a championship golf course, country club, fishing lake and other amenities for member-landowners. Nonmembers can pay to use most resort facilities.

SUSTAINABLE LIVING, TAOS-STYLE BY HARVEY BLAUSTEIN

While progress is being made in the area of solar energy, did you notice that in the solar capital of the world there are very few homes that use the sun for heat? It seems to me that I see a lot more solar arrays than 10 years ago around town, and in the outlying areas, but most homes don’t sport solar panels. I suppose some of that is because ofcost. If it were cheaper for folks to use the sun, and the recapture period was reduced, more folks would switch over from other fuels. The price has just not come down enough, the benefits not clearly defined monetarily enough for folks here to buy in to it. For the uninitiated, a recapture period is the time it takes to recapture or get back your original investment. Most folks don’t consider it getting their money back if it takes more than five years. The cost benefit seems lost on a longer period of time. In my experience many talk the talk about sustainable living but most don’t walk the walk. Most of us who choose to live in Taos have Mother Earth in our hearts, but finding ways to be a part of the solution isn’t always easy. Especially when it costs money. Our people will do what they can and go out of their way with such things as recycling, which does not take funds – but since most of us are here because money does not drive us, it also means we have less of it. And so cost can always be an issue.

Solar energy is just a part of sustainable living choices but the one easiest to see and recognize. But the building materials we use are a big part of that, which leads me to Mike Reynolds and his earthships. While I have heard folks praise Reynolds and damn him, there is no question that he has contributed greatly to the acceptance of alternative building materials. For Reynolds and his methods, old tires, bottles and cans are basic constructions elements instead of cement and synthetics that may never biodegrade. We, in Taos, use just about everything to build our nests in our open-minded approach to life and home. Our mud and straw, used in making adobe bricks, are legendary, with our Taos Pueblo exhibit A on how long-lasting it can be. Then there are straw bale homes, which have an organic feel and are pleasant to be in. We see an occasional log home, more often up the canyon in Valle Escondido, but I know of one that sticks out like a sore thumb to me on Cuchilla Road. While the Taos Pueblo Indians were not teepee dwellers, I know several folks here in Taos who have, or had, them on their land. There is something about carrying your home around with you that seems the ultimate sustainable living statement, but I am not a good horse rider and something would be lost if I hauled my teepee around in my SUV! Some apparent sustainable choices have, like so much in life, a good side and a not-so-good side. Take burning wood for heat. IMHO that would fit under the general umbrella of good for the earth compared to say burning coal or oil, but when we in this valley get a cold snap one can see the haze from the burning wood hanging above our town – and that can’t be good for Mother Earth. And our breathing. Our people are committed to doing what they can. I suggest that we were all pretty pretty quick to adopt the idea of bringing our own bags to the grocery – thereby eliminating both paper and plastic options. I give Cid Backer a lot of credit as he both encouraged the use by giving money to charity, instead of buying bags, and he gave plenty of them away in promotions … which is also good advertising. Cid did not get to where he is by being dumb! Some things we need to get better at. I see no clear good way to get rid of computer stuff. Or electric car batteries. So much of that is plastic or material with a real toxicity for Mother Earth. And sustainable is so against all of that. Our recycle center does take some stuff. What they do with it I have no idea. But it does move it along down the line, hoping the endgame is a good one. Proper disposal. We, in Taos, are a group of conscious folks who do care about Mother Earth. I think as science and technology gives us more and better ways to be sustainable, Taoseños will quickly adopt them. So long as it doesn’t cost a lot. Harvey Blaustein is a retired attorney and local real estate broker.
