While McFarland has had a definite hand in shaping what the gallery is and how it operates, nowadays he’s taking a hands-off approach. He’s adjusted to “having people in the community activate that space with me not really putting in as much effort, but just kind of letting people shape what’s possible in these spaces,” he says.
“I’ve shifted more from curating and running the gallery to looking at collecting as well as meeting other artists around the world and bringing in those relationships to the future of Revolt Gallery,” McFarland added.
Peralta Hall — which provided woodworking, drawing, painting, jewelry and small metal construction, ceramics and sculpture labs — Revolt has teamed up with UNM Art Department Chair Sarah Stolar to keep the arts flowing.
“It really started out as being a temporary thing while we were in transition and in our temporary building,” Stolar says, “but now it has been so fruitful that we are probably going to continue this collaboration even after the Atrium Gallery reopens when we moved back to Fred Peralta Hall in fall of this year.”
Showcases of this fruitful team pairing includes “Masks All The Way Down,” an immersive installation by Kate Turner that weaves masking, identity and autobiography through soft sculpture and mixed materials.
With collaborations spanning from Kukani Gallery to Fahrenheit Gallery, the gallery pulses forward, rewriting the script of what art spaces can be. March brought a new chapter: the annual women’s show in collaboration with UNM’s Petra Marguerite. Petra is a two-time recipient of the SVA fellowship. It’ll be her first major curatorial project with the benefit of McFarland and Sarah Stolar providing mentorship.
Ever since the renovation of UNM’s Fred
Another recent show was "Nature Vs. Nurture," a multidisciplinary exhibition by Christie Serpentine examining the forces that shape identity — exploring the tension between what is inherited and what is cultivated, drawing from personal mythology and organic gardening practices.
While Sarah Stolar is returning to her alma mater in Cincinnati, the UNM-Revolt dynamic will most likely remain as strong as ever if not stronger. “I will be leaving UNM Taos in May, and so I won’t be doing anything that is connected to UNM Taos anymore, but I will continue to help co-direct Revolt Gallery with Steve and also with Rachel Cohen, who works for the School of Visual Arts in New York. So we’re kind of a broadly, geographically spread team.”
The UNM-Revolt exhibitions are already lined up for the year as Jaime Knight transitions into the role of art department chair.
