Statement of Framework:

Tourists: (1) Direction board (2) Storyboard (3) Experience Melbourne multi food culture (4) Iconic sculpture (5) Souvenir store (6) Walking tour program (7) Events

Life between buildings is the major focus of Jan Gehl’s philosophy, which, in his opinion, comprises the entire spectrum of human activities in public space. Design for QVM should prioritise the experience of various visitors. The following five categories exemplify the current visitor’s group: tourists, singles/couples, families, students, and the aged/disabled. Visitors all around world loved the lifestyle of Melbourne City – its vibrant energy, markets, parks, museums, each with its own special identity. Queen Victoria Market tops the list as Melbourne’s most popular tourism attraction with more than 51% visiting rate. Therefore, the experience of the tourists should be the priority of the redevelopment of QVM. Also, with the growing population and ever-changing lifestyle (high density), the experience of nearby apartment dwellers (mostly singles and couples) is crucial to a successful redevelopment of QVM. Lastly is the experience of student group, and the aged/disabled.

Provide large space for all kinds of market programme: such as Asian Food Exhibition, Night Market or Theatre

Statement of Design Intent:

Reappear English Settlemet

Queen Victoria Market will be a world-class ‘market of markets’ with a unique outdoor and indoor setting for day and night, specialty markets, large public plaza to meet the future needs of visitors, traders and a growing city. At the same time preserving the old by acknowledging the cemetery, remain the building facade and traditional market structure.

“First life, then spaces, then buildings – the other way around never works.” -- Jan Gehl

AFTER Start with design for functionality - keep the existing tram stops, and add a new one on the new Franklin Street. - break down the information centre into one building and four modern pavilion across the area - ratain the position of dropoff area - ratain two bike parking and delete one - deconstruct one existing toilet, and relocate it

And consider its reliability - provide newly designed seating along Queen and Therry street - retain but rearrange shaded area on food court - divide human flow by separate the originally designed information centre
