Notes Ballet for Bouncing Balls was composed with the concept that rhythmic patterns can be seen as well as heard. For me, the actions of a person bouncing a ball demonstrate this idea well, and it seemed a natural extension to write a piece around it. In the piece, performers are asked to use a combination of basketballs and handballs as their instruments. The techniques of sound and sight utilized with these new instruments include dribbling, slapping, juggling, tossing, and of course…bouncing. There is an inherent element of theater and dance included in the work, and performers are encouraged to explore it. The rhythmic motives employed are generally simple and groove-based, allowing instead for a focus on the choreography and creative performance of the music.
Montgomery Hatch is a percussionist with the New York City Opera and Professor of Percussion at Hofstra University in Long Island. He has performed with numerous orchestras, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Ballet, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, and Honolulu Symphony among others. He is a regular performer on Broadway in New York City and has recorded for films and CDs in Los Angeles and San Francisco at Fox Studios and Skywalker Ranch. As an advocate of new music, Montgomery has performed in a number of premieres by composers such as John Adams, Thomas Ades, Michael Daugherty, Magnus Lindberg, Christopher Rouse, and John Zorn. He has toured with orchestras in Japan, Europe, and throughout the Unites States; He was a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard Drum & Bugle Corps in 1997 and 1998.
Personnel and Equipment Ballet for Bouncing Balls requires 5 players and the following equipment: Player 1 – 1 large basketball Player 2 – 1 small basketball Player 3 – 2 handballs & 1 large basketball Player 4 – 1 small basketball Player 5 – 2 handballs & 1 large basketball (juggling skills required!)
Staging Map Note: The staging ideas presented here are merely suggestions. Though certain formations are necessary for the execution of the music, it is intended that the ensemble will adapt the choreography and staging to fit the performance space and the creative strengths of its members.
