Driven by a hearty rock feel, Candlesticks is tough for young drummers to resist. While dynamic balance and consistent beat placement is essential to achieving a great groove, “playing” rests can be problematic in ensemble settings. Pay special attention to the stop-time in the bridge (letter C). Listening, counting, subdividing, and being aware of each other’s body language are great tools for synchronizing your ensemble and creating the ultimate pocket.
