PROGRAM NOTES

Nothing is more inspiring to musicians than playing well-crafted music. Percussionists can choose from an abundance of quality material written specifically for their instruments in an endless variety of styles and formats. Another popular option is to perform pieces now known as classics, sometimes centuries old, arranged in modern settings by and for percussionists.

Many early performances of what were later to become classics were well played, well attended, and enthusiastically received by audiences and critics alike. Repeat performances were also crucial in a world still void of radio broadcasts and recordings for home consumption. On the other hand, many great works would require history-changing events over the course of centuries to survive. Poorly financed musicians, lack of publicity, vindictive reviews, and incompetent and/or unscrupulous promoters often blunted any chance for success of new works with great potential. In addition, touring orchestras designed to support new music and reach larger audiences were virtually non-existent.

Things have changed. Today’s streaming and downloading platforms have enabled music lovers to affordably dig deeper than ever in order to resurrect hidden gems. Written in 1786 by lesser known Italian composer Luigi Boccherini, Clockbox is one such gem—catchy, rhythmic, and fresh in character. Maybe something else he wrote is worth a look as well!
