PROGRAM & PERFORMANCE NOTES
This solo is a nod to the “second line” style of drumming from New Orleans. Second line music comes from traditional funeral processions in New Orleans where the life of the deceased was celebrated in parade form with music while the mourners accompanied the casket to the cemetery. The percussion section was driven by snare and bass drum players using ragtime and jazz rhythms to dialogue between each other. These musical ideas became hugely influential when the drumset was invented and grew in popularity in the early 20th century, and they continue to serve as a source of inspiration for modern players as well.
The snare drum part should be performed with clarity and a rudimental interpretation, using open rolls. I used a 5x14” snare drum with ample muffling for a dry and articulate sound. That said, other snare drum choices would also be suitable. The bass drum sound should be articulate; however, in the style of traditional second line playing, a little bit of tone and resonance in the bass drum is nice. I used an 18” bass drum tuned largely open with minimal muffling. The piece should comfortably groove and feel legato in general.
