Shaping melodic lines on keyboard percussion instruments, particularly at slow tempos, can be challenging for percussionists. Such is the case with Heartland. A slower downstroke to the bar usually lessens the attack but increases the risk of being late to the beat. In the A section (mm. 1–13), be sure to pay close attention to the conversation between the two upper marimba players. Clear rhythmic placement and use of directional dynamics between them should help determine the path forward for the rest of the ensemble. In the B section (starting at letter A), however, the moving parts found in the marimba and vibraphone should be subservient to the melody played on the glockenspiel and later Marimba 1. During the final cadence, a proportionate wind-down in tempo and dynamics should provide for a poignant moment of reflection.
