PROGRAM NOTES

Memory’s Lens is a musical attempt to capture the way one feels when remembering their earliest childhood. Our formative experiences are often remembered with vibrant colors, nostalgia, and a dense fog of mystery. The harmonic structure is intended to convey this strange combination. Wind chimes on my grandparent’s porch are some of my first personal memories, represented in this piece by vibraphones as well as cup chimes. The drums and auxiliary percussion parts are meant to embody the ordered chaos of how memories are formed and change subtly over the years.

PLAYERS AND INSTRUMENTATION

Memory’s Lens requires 6 players with the following instrumentation:

1. Vibraphone 1 + suspended cymbal, mounted kick drum (shared)

2. Vibraphone 2 + suspended cymbal, mounted kick drum (shared)

3. Snare drum + cup chime*

4. Concert toms (4) + cup chime*

5. Percussion 1 — 3 woodblocks, tambourine, cup chime*, bongos, mounted kick drum (shared), suspended cymbal (shared w/ V1)

6. Percussion 2 — castanets, sleigh bells, mounted kick drum (shared), cup chime*, brake drum, suspended cymbal (shared w/ V2)

* may substitute Zil-Bels, cymbal bells, or finger cymbals
