NOTES Ode to the One-Armed Drummer is a short multipercussion solo inspired by the music of composer Dave Hollinden. Written in a quasi-drumset style, this piece explores different rhythmic textures, notably groupings of five and 4:3 polyrhythms. After the opening statement, various echo effects and percussive interjections are layered over a bass drum ostinato. A half-time rock groove unfolds and builds towards a recap of the opening thematic material. The piece offers various opportunities for expression throughout. This solo was originally composed for a student who had broken his arm and needed a piece to play for solo and ensemble. For a fun challenge, the piece may be performed using one hand, but it works just as well using both hands. It is up to the performer whether he/she wishes to use one or two hands. —John Willmarth
