PROGRAM NOTES

Polar Night explores musical textures inspired by the world’s northernmost settlement, Longyearbyen, Norway. Longyearbyen is known for its views of the beautiful northern lights and polar nights, in which it is nighttime for over 24 hours. Through the use of cardboard dowels, bowed vibraphone, and tuned wooden slats, shimmering and icy timbres begin delicately and evolve into a modern groove.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

The vibraphone parts call for cardboard dowels which can be taken from metal coat hangers. The part later calls for bass bows: two each for the marimba, vibraphone 2, and wooden slats players.

The wooden slat part calls for wooden slats tuned to the following pitches: G3, Ab3, C4, F4, G4, Ab4 ⬩ The part should be played with two medium-soft yarn mallets. The entire wooden slat section is written an octave higher than sounded so that the kick drum part (below the staff) can be more easily read.

The piece may be performed with two standard 3-octave vibraphones. If an extended range vibraphone is available for vibraphone 2, the wooden slats player will bow the optional low E-flats in parentheses on vibraphone 2 at letter F.

PLAYERS AND INSTRUMENTATION

Polar Night requires 4 players with the following instrumentation:

1. Vibraphone 1

2. Vibraphone 2 (optional 3.5- or 4-octave) + suspended cymbal

3. Wooden slats + suspended cymbal (may share w/ V2), kick drum w/ pedal

4. Marimba (5-octave) + suspended cymbal
