PROGRAM NOTES

Studying classical music at The Juilliard School was an eye-opening experience for me, particularly after having been raised on pop and rock and roll music. Most styles of music share common elements that make them fun to listen to and play as well. Song for All Seasons is no exception.

This piece is partially based on Orchésographie by the French Renaissance cleric, Thoinot Arbeau.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

The intro (introduction) and outro (coda) are identical and create neat and tidy bookends to the song. The catchy, full-volume chorus is repeated after every contrasting section. As always, there’s no greater vehicle for expression and for keeping all engaged than the use of dynamics. In this context, the choruses should always serve as an arrival point and sound bigger and fuller than the other sections. Also note that the dynamics in the chimes and timpani are often a bit softer than their counterparts to prevent things from getting too boisterous or boomy.

Establish a nicely balanced groove and exaggerate your dynamics. Watch and listen to each other, play as a team, and have fun—a sure formula for success in performance!
