PROGRAM NOTES
By means of its basic chord structure, pumping four-on-the-floor rhythm, and formulaic structure, Strum pays homage to the golden age of pop records. Held together by the rhythmic pulse of a detuned ukelele (tuned in open A’s and E’s) and played with sticks (we used chopsticks in the premier for reduced attack through the P.A.), Strum chugs along in a toe-tapping melange of colorful mallet percussion and drums. Although the timpani formidably covers the bottom end throughout, the optional addition of an electric bass guitar can supply tasty nuances and be a huge groove enhancer.
The challenge here is simple: sound like a band on a recording. Create a colorful blend while the simple infectious groove takes care of the rest—and Strum is sure to go platinum at your next outing!
