PROGRAM NOTES

During my years living in Dickinson, North Dakota, I had a great neighbor named Vince. Vince was an older gentleman who had this unique accent like I had never heard, with the ends of words suddenly being clipped off. I never was able to place his accent, but it’s always stuck with me as one of the more unique accents I’d ever heard.

This piece aims to emulate that idea of sounds suddenly stopping by utilizing the common sounds of cymbals. I tried to explore a number of different techniques to showcase the variety of colors and textures that could be created with a single cymbal.

PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS

Each of the three cymbal players should use a pair of double-sided multipercussion sticks with a stick end and a softer mallet end. Within that parameter, however, directors are welcome to get creative with implements as they see fit if they wish to explore other colors within the ensemble.

Here are some examples of ways in which you could adjust this piece to fit your own needs:

• Placing repeats in places to extend the length of the piece

• Expanding or reducing the number of players in various sections to reflect the dynamics or form of the work

• Opening up sections of a piece over which students or guest artists may improvise

• Having players change instruments within their given family as the piece progresses

• Adjusting the form of the work to start big, small, or however best fits the performance

NOTATION KEY

The small circle (°) is used within passages that include dampening and means to play that note without dampening, regardless of the technique or mallet.

PLAYERS AND INSTRUMENTATION

Vince requires 4 or more players with the following instrumentation suggestions:

1. High cymbal – Instruments in this group might include (the brighter the better):

• Large splash cymbal

• Small crash cymbal

2. Medium cymbal – Pitched between the high and low cymbal parts, instruments in this group might include:

• Medium crash cymbal

• Small China cymbal

3. Low cymbal – Instruments in this group might include:

• Ride cymbal

• Large crash cymbal

• Suspended cymbal

4. Tam-tam – Instruments in this group should be lower in pitch than the low cymbal part and can include:

• Tam-tam

• Large gong

• Large, resonant metal (sheet metal, large metal bowl)
