Stop Texting While Driving We know that mobile phone gadgets are a basic necessity which helps us establish communication on the go; however we must not ignore the unintended yet very dangerous consequences that we might have to face due to too much usage of cell phones. In recent times we have seen an increase in number of distracted drivers, mostly attending calls or sending text messages while they drive. This causes injury and even takes lives. In the US alone more than 3000 teenagers die due to car accident caused by texting while driving, over 416,000 people were wounded. Distracted driver not only endanger their own lives but also are a threat to others, around 40% of American has been involved in cases when distracted drivers posed a threat to their lives and lives of others. To address this issue, safety organizations worldwide are collaborating with governments and NGO’s to educate and inform the public about the dangers of distracted driving. For instance, National distraction driving summit is an example of the initiative taken by the US government. Cell phone usage for commercial drivers has been banned and to assist and educate people, they have also launched a website, Distraction.gov. Driving carelessly or texting while driving comes under the category of harsh driving; this is considered as a criminal offence in most of the countries and carries huge penalties, imprisonment, and probation and community service. The severity of the offence is a major determinant of the type of punishment. Every member of the civil society has a responsibility of spreading this awareness that distracted driving can be very dangerous. Telecommunication industry can give tag lines like “on the road, off the phone”. When new drivers file an application for their license and older drivers come for renewal of their license, the issuing authority must give a counseling session so that the message can be put forward quite clearly. Parent must lead by example, as children learn from their parents. Be an example for your children; pull over to a safe place when you need to take an urgent call. Road can be a safer place if you take care of the basics. Remember, eyes off the road even for a fraction of a second can be lethal. You must act responsibly and make sure you don’t have the regret of being careless and you don’t suffer the loss of any one you care for or you don’t harm anyone who was driving the right way but was a victim of your ignorance.
