Total Package Cover Letter Sample 123 Walking Lane Glen Rose, TX 76442 March 24, 2020 Jane Smith Human Resources Director Sacred Heart General Hospital 317 John Street Stephenville, TX 76401 Ms. Smith, I am applying for the Summer Administrative Internship for Summer 2020 that I have researched on the Sacred Heart General Hospital web page. I am interested in pursuing a career in health care administration and the internship Sacred Heart General Hospital offers is of great interest to me and aligns with my career goals. Throughout my jobs and involvement in campus organizations, I have shown leadership through my actions and attitude in every position I have held. Engaging in a team environment has shown me that I can work well with others, as well as leading them to get the best results by communicating well on what needs to be done. I continuously strive to exceed expectations for the customer’s needs, the organization, and the job. My school has provided me opportunities in several organizations, honors courses, and the achievement of becoming a distinguished student. I know Sacred Heart has a high priority of giving back to the community, and my volunteer experience has demonstrated that I have the same values. I have volunteered with organizations and events from church activities to Breast Cancer and Autism Awareness events. The skills and experiences that I have accumulated will help me succeed in this internship as I further explore the opportunities within health care administration. I believe the Sacred Heart General Hospital internship appears to be exactly what I am looking for and will allow me the opportunity to use my skills while developing new ones to achieve a career in health care administration. I have provided my résumé for further review. Please let me know if you need further information. I can be reached at 254-555-1212 or Betty.White@go.tarleton.edu. I look forward to hearing back from you. Sincerely,

Resume Writing Tips Your résumé should clearly and concisely define your knowledge, experience, and expertise in your particular field of interest. Since a résumé consists of various sections, some required, while others are optional, you will note that each résumé sample you look at is different. Your résumé will be (and should be) unique to your experiences. The purpose of a résumé is to give employers a better idea of the candidate’s qualifications and experiences; therefore, it is vital to tailor your résumé to the objective or position you are applying for.

Content: • Keep the résumé to one page. Advanced degree students and candidates

who have a wealth of relevant work history may require more than one page. If your résumé exceeds one page, be sure to include your name on subsequent pages. • Be clear, concise, and consistent in developing bullet points that describe your experiences. • Start each bullet point with an action verb. • Highlight achievements and quantify when possible. • Prioritize so that the most relevant items appear first. • Avoid abbreviating (your résumé is not a text message).

Format: • Your résumé should be easy to read with clean and simple lines and a

reasonable amount of white space. • Use a font size that is readable, typically no smaller than 10 point font or larger than 14 point font. A larger font size is acceptable for your name. • Use formatting, such as underlining, boldfacing, and italicizing to guide the reader’s attention throughout your résumé. • Change the margins to narrow (1/2 inch margin on all sides) to maximize the spacing of your document. • Remove extra spaces if needed to avoid a few lines dropping past one page. • If your résumé exceeds one page, the second page should be at least half a page or more. • We do not recommend using a template.

Select a Style The first step to tailoring a résumé to your experiences is selecting a résumé style from the following options: The Chronological Résumé presents your education and work experience in a straightforward, reverse chronological order. It is effective if your work experience is relevant to your objective. The Functional Résumé concentrates on your qualifications that relate to the skills necessary to perform the desired job. This is effective if your work experience is NOT closely related to your objective. The Combination Résumé uses both styles. The skills or qualifications section identifies your skills in relation to your job or career objective. This format grabs the reader’s attention early.

TIPS FOR ELECTRONIC RÉSUMÉ SUBMISSION If you are sending a recruiter or hiring manager an email to alert them of your interest in their open position, there are a few guidelines to follow. Since your email is standing in as your cover letter, be sure to include your résumé—you may want to use a line break and insert your résumé at the bottom of the email just in case the organization’s firewall blocks attachments. 1. Be sure to send your email during business hours. You wouldn’t want to

annoy the recipient by having their cell phone go off at 10:15 pm only for them to check it and see your name. 2. Capitalize the use of the subject line. Use the subject line to entice the

reader into your cover letter. For example, for a Director of Nursing position, say something such as “experienced nurse for Director of Nursing position.” 3. “Say my name, say my name.” Don’t send your email “To Whom it May

Concern”, instead use your intended recipient’s name. You may have to research who this is, but it will be worth the effort.

4. Meaningful content. Follow the typical guidelines for a cover letter—let

them know right out of the gate what your goals are.

5. Keep it concise. Do not include more than the typical cover letter just

because you don’t have to print it. No one wants to read a novel of an email. 6. Don’t bedazzle it. We have all been tempted to change our backgrounds

and font colors, but this is not the time. Keep it classic—white background, black or navy blue font color, Calibri, 11pt.

7. Use the spell check tool. If you use all caps for your section headers, review

the spelling. Spell check does not catch misspelled words in all caps.

8. Trial Send. Before sending your email, send it to yourself, or a friend, to

make sure your formatting is being received as intended.

9. Convert to PDF. To keep your formatting intact, convert your resume to a

PDF.

10. Applicant Tracking System (ATS). Remember that many employers use

ATS to screen applicants – software that scans and ranks job applicants. It is important for you to use keywords and tailor your resume for each job. Templates can get scrambled with ATS so that is why it is recommended to start from scratch on a Word document. Depending on the employer's ATS, the software may read one file type better than the other.

CURRICULUM VITAE AND PERSONAL STATEMENT What is a Curriculum Vitae?

Also called a CV or Vitae, the curriculum vitae is, as its name suggests, an overview of your life’s accomplishments, most specifically those that are relevant to the academic realm. In the United States, the curriculum vitae is used almost exclusively when one is pursuing academic positions. The curriculum vitae is a living document which will reflect the developments in a scholar/teacher’s career and thus should be updated frequently.

How is a CV different from a résumé?

The most noticeable difference between most CVs and most résumés is the length. Entry level résumés are usually limited to a page. CVs, however, often run to three or more pages. (Remember, however, that the length is not the determinant of a successful CV. You should try to present all the relevant information that you can in a concise manner.) A more subtle but equally important distinction is that the goal of a résumé is to construct a professional identity, but the goal of a CV is to construct a scholarly identity. Thus, your CV will need to reflect your ability as a teacher, researcher, and publishing scholar within your discipline. Categories to consider might include teaching, research, publications, technical/specialized skills, grants, and consulting.

Personal Statement

As you gather application materials for graduate school, you will be required to include a written statement as part of the process. These written statements are often called “letters of intent”, “personal narratives”, “personal statements”, or “statements of purpose”. A personal statement represents a graduate school’s first qualitative introduction to the way you think and the way you express yourself. The personal statement must serve as a reflection of your personality and intellect. You must sell yourself through this statement, just as you would through a successful job interview. Your personal statement for graduate school should focus on your specific interests and goals as they pertain to academics. Back up each claim you make with specific examples. While the essay is personal in nature, the school is not typically looking for your life story. Some schools may want specific personal experiences that have impacted your choices and career path. In this case, be brief and to the point, especially if they were difficult life experiences. Your statement needs to be tailored to the program and university to which you are applying. As a good rule of thumb, pay close attention to the writing prompt given by the school or program. You should outline your career and research goals, your existing education and skillset, and explain your interest in the program, university, and department. Your statement will likely be between 250 and 750 words, depending upon the school and its requirements.
