SAFETY NEWS ON PODFather

ACTION REQUIRED

Driver App Update

You need to take action. We have released a new version of our driver app, for both iOS and Android users. If you do not update the app, driver messaging will be affected.

What you need to do

Step 1: Please advise ALL your drivers to update their PODfather app via the APP/Play Store. If your drivers have auto-update enabled, they may already be running on the latest version. They need to be running PODfather iOS v6.0.0 or Android v11.0.1.

Step 2: Once updated, the app needs to be opened once so that it registers a new messaging token with PODfather. The token is required to send notifications to the device. If drivers don’t launch the app after upgrading, no token will be registered. This could impact the drivers as notification messages will not be immediately visible.

What happens if you don’t take action?

If you don’t update the app, driver messaging will be affected; ‘’new job notification’’ and ‘’job cancelled’’ messages will no longer work the same way.

Why is this update happening?

On Thursday 20th June 2024, Google will turn off its legacy Fibrebase API, which will impact push notifications for Android and iOS devices. This has necessitated an update for PODfather driver app, which we have now deployed to the App/Playstore.

Please note, this update will mean that we can no longer support iOS 10 and 11.

We are here to help

If you have any queries or need help with this update please get in touch by emailing helpdesk@podfather.com or give them a call on 0131 553 0400.

ONECARD EXPIRY DATE

OneCards were originally provided with a 5-year expiry date. This has been extended to 10 years.

SAFETY NEWS ON Vehicle Fire

We had one of our Hauliers Paul Thompson EPL Transport see a van with a fire developing under the bonnet on A428. The driver used the water onboard his mixer truck to help control the fire until the emergency services arrived. It also allowed them to move the van to a safe area shown in the picture. This prevented further damage to the van and any personal belongings in there. Site were appreciative and gave him a company coat. He was provided with a picture of the scene once the emergency services arrived by Skanska.

YOU SAID WE DID

After several safety observations regarding Barrasford road some improvements have been done and is considerably better than previously. They are trying to keep on top of it often to prevent build up & site manager is putting a plan together for repair works in sections. The new wagon wash in Coxhoe is great, drivers have kept it in good condition and even clean off the concrete pad after use!

HIGHLIGHTS Safety

Pre-shift and first use WALK AROUND CHECKS

Drivers, vehicle operators and transport/fleet managers have a collective responsibility to ensure that the vehicles they are operating are safe to drive and that they’re roadworthy. Pre-shift HGV checks, also referred to as walk around checks, must be carried out before each vehicle is driven on the road each day. If more than one driver uses the vehicle in a day, then the driver taking charge of the vehicle should carry out their own additional checks to ensure the vehicle is safe for them to drive.

Carefully assess the interior and exterior of the vehicle that can be safely assessed. The walk around checks need to cover the whole vehicle including trailer and any safety equipment fitted.

Checks must be recorded and any safety defects need to be reported and fixed before the vehicle is driven. And state ‘nil defects’ if none found.

The consequences of not carrying out HGV daily checks

The DVSA can stop you and ask you to complete the daily checks on your vehicle, or request a copy of the records which show you have completed the necessary daily checks.

If any defects are found on a vehicle during one of these checks, drivers can be prevented from driving until the defect is fixed, or a fine can issued to the driver.

Reversing vehicles on site

ALWAYS Check all items on your daily check sheet.

Delivery or collection vehicles on major roadworks or national contracting sites must NOT reverse unless they are under the direct control of a banksman. If not available raise a near hit through ePOD.

DO Remember that it is always the driver’s responsibility to make sure that the delivery can be made safely.

DO STOP if you feel any part of the delivery is unsafe and raise a near hit.

DO Proceed to the signed designated ‘holding area’ where applicable and await instruction.

DO Identify the Banksman.

DO Always keep the Banksman in view.

DO STOP if you lose sight of the Banksman.

DO Ensure clear two-way communication is maintained at all times.
