Materials extraction Sand and gravel derives from the erosion of particles that were transported and deposited by water or ice. Sand and gravel quarries are usually shallow processing sites. Operations are likely to be shorter term than in rock quarries with restoration following closely behind extraction. Materials processed from the site are used largely in concrete, construction and landscaping. They are supplied into local markets for construction projects including houses, hospitals, schools and commercial development schemes.

On average it takes 50 tonnes of aggregates to build a home in the uk. Applications range from the use in concrete foundations to the manufacture of roof tiles. The majority of high quality aggregates manufactured at Kingsnorth are used locally, helping to reduce environmental impact and unnecessary transportation movement.

Sustainability - reusing waste building materials At Tarmac we are committed to making business operations more sustainable. Our site has used locally sourced recycled construction and demolition materials to form part of the vehicle and pedestrian traffic routes. This helps to reduce demand on primary resources.

Working with local communities and organisations At Tarmac we aim to be a good neighbour. We work closely with our local communities and are actively engaged with the local residents and councils.
