Material Guide

Ultimate material solutions for more sustainable roads.

Using the latest technology in contracting with 3D modelling and Ultimate asphalts, PAVE delivers a new generation of more sustainable pavement solutions leading the way in helping to build better road surfaces. Pavements that last longer, that reduce installation time and generate fewer carbon emissions.

This document highlights the Ultimate asphalt solutions available today and those leading the Net Zero transition.

Next generation pavements Recording and cutting carbon emissions

Biogenic and Long-life asphalts - Working with our supply partners, Tarmac is trialling a range of new low carbon, biogenic and long-life asphalts designed to help reduce carbon footprints, capture carbon and significantly extend pavement life compared to current materials.

Biogenic

This asphalt binder technology effectively locks away carbon absorbed during the growth of the biomass element, turning the road into a carbon sink. Since the asphalt can be recycled at the end of the pavement life, most of this carbon will not re-enter the atmosphere. According to available data, biogenic asphalt technology could potentially reduce the carbon footprint of a typical asphalt mix by approximately 40%. This helps our customers on their path towards Net Zero.

Longlife Longlife is designed to increase the pavement life by incorporating a bitumen that ages more slowly. Ageing is caused by the effects air, water and sunlight that will eventually lead to deterioration of the surface so that it requires replacement. Slowing this process down enables an increase in the service life offering improved value for money and reduced disruption, long term carbon savings and importantly help network operators to better manage their assets.

As climate and legislation demand reductions in carbon emissions accurate measurement and recording during road resurfacing projects is now a necessity if we are to make real progress towards Net Zero. Use of PAVE technology ensures that emissions are fully captured over the entire duration of the scheme. This enables accurate cradle-to-gate calculation of carbon footprints and transparent reporting to clients. It also allows the impact of carbon saving measures to be successfully evaluated.

The PAVE carbon calculator can be used pre-works to show the full scheme carbon footprint figure as per the specification documents and to demonstrate carbon savings following value engineering. The calculator considers the material, material transport to site, surfacing operation and the planing process to deliver accurate whole project Carbon emissions performance.

RUBBER MODIFIED ASPHALT

Tarmac’s rubber modified asphalts enable old tyres to be converted into new roads and footpaths. As a result, they help to offset the environmental impact of highways maintenance activities and send out a strong local sustainability message.

500 waste tyres per km of road

Rubber modified asphalts incorporate the rubber from one tyre per tonne of asphalt, giving the potential to recycle about 500 tyres per kilometre of road, depending on layer thickness.

8% reduction in CO2

The typical carbon footprint of Tarmac’s rubber modified SMA solution will be around 8% lower than the equivalent conventional SMA.

Fully recycled in the UK

Reinforcing steel from truck tyres is also recycled to make new steel. Fibres and fine dust from the recycling process, which have no alternative uses, are used as a fuel in Tarmac’s cement kilns.

ULTILOW warm mix asphalt technology

Tarmac rubber modified asphalts incorporate proven ULTILOW warm mix asphalt technology as standard. Manufactured and laid at lower temperatures, they result in lower CO₂ emissions during production. Site safety is also improved from reduced fumes and steam on site and a reduced risk of burns.

Direct alternative to hot mix asphalts

The Tarmac rubber modified SMA is a direct alternative to 50 pen SMA and delivers the same performance and surface characteristics in terms of regularity and texture.

Proven performance on UK roads Performance has been proven on a growing number of UK roads from residential streets to busy motorways.
