ABOUT TARMAC Tarmac, a CRH company, is the UK’s leading sustainable building materials and construction solutions business. Our innovative services and solutions help to deliver the infrastructure needed to grow the economy today and create a more sustainable built environment to support our future prosperity. “The bigger we all think today…. …. the better we can make tomorrow”

A number of the UK’s current and future large scale rail projects will be integral to the transformation of our transport infrastructure and will undoubtedly help rebalance the UK Economy and bring greater prosperity to the midlands and the north. HS2 for example is the UK’s largest infrastructure project to impact on the construction industry in modern times and with the scheme receiving royal assent, planning and preparation will be pivotal to the success of the project.

Tarmac’s wealth of expertise in developing and supplying construction materials for complex rail projects offers fully developed and economic solutions to the challenges posed. We are committed to supporting sustainable economic growth and have clear targets and a strategy to deliver this in our own business. Equally we are committed to building a zero harm culture that prioritises people’s health, safety and well-being, and targets continuous improvement and an ever-safer working environment.

Having a dedicated Major Projects Team working on the scheme since 2015 alongside other national infrastructure projects, we truly embrace early client and contractor collaborative engagement. Tarmac is able to supply a wealth of expertise on the latest value added products and systems from our business, supported and delivered by highly skilled, experienced and passionate people. With early involvement we can propose engineering and design solutions and advise on logistical considerations and alternative products, methods and services. This enables us to create innovative solutions that are beyond our customer’s expectations, often solving problems and creating efficiencies.

As a major employer we take a proactive approach in increasing the representation of local people in our workforce. We ensure that we work in harmony with local communities, develop a talented and diverse workforce and, that as a responsible business, we play our part in the training of the younger generation by taking on graduates and apprentices. Martin Riley Senior Vice President

TUNNEL SEGMENTS

Through the relationship built between Tarmac & Max Bögl we both realised that the Tunnelling Sector in the UK is becoming a key growth market with a strong pipeline of tunnelling projects such as Thames Tideway Tunnel and of course HS2 at the forefront of imminent starts. It was therefore clear to both partners that an integrated solution that offers both companies key expertise would provide a unique supply solution. Considering not only the technical and quality aspects of major project tunnel segment supply but also the operational and logistical elements often associated in large volume haulage. Tarmac & Max Bögl have been individually manufacturing tunnel segments for many years as well as providing high specification concrete mix solutions for each bespoke major project.

8

TARMAC CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS

The Tarmac Max Bögl JV are also proud to be associated with CVB on the Thames Tideway Tunnel East Project to provide precast tunnel segments for both the Greenwich and the Main Chambers Wharf Tunnels. Through this arrangement we see many benefits associated to rail projects such as our ongoing operational and manufacturing excellence can be directly transferred to one of the high speed rail tunnel

projects as well as the logistical solutions currently integrated into our service to CVB in order to solve local logistical and storage constraints. With a strong technical support team, we are driven by a proactive approach to our customers and aim to provide unrivalled assistance throughout the project which starts at the preconstruction phase and carries through to delivery within a seamless transition.

Tarmac aims to achieve and maintain the highest standards of health and safety for all employees, contractors and members of the public and is committed to continual improvement in its health and safety performance. We work in potentially hazardous environments so it’s important that everyone understands how to go about their jobs safely. Our role is zero harm to anyone working for, or with, Tarmac. Creating a consistent, proactive safety culture through engagement, training and behaviour change, will

Everyone working at Tarmac is expected to work in a safe, responsible manner and to challenge unsafe behaviour. We will proactively work with our customers to achieve the ambitious targets that will be set to deliver nationally important infrastructure schemes, ensuring the legacy objectives are embedded within our operations to promote our zero harm culture.

PROTECTING THE HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELL-BEING OF OUR EMPLOYEES, CONTRACTORS AND THOSE AROUND US IS A CORE VALUE OF OUR BUSINESS.

TARMAC CONSTRUCTION SOLUTIONS

CASE STUDY SAFER BY DESIGN - TRIAL OF NEW CONCRETE MIXER TRUCK In 2015 we became the first company in the UK to trial the new Economic concrete truck mixer, which has been designed by Mercedes-Benz to improve the driver’s field of vision. Sporting a panoramic windscreen and floor-to-ceiling doors, the new vehicle gives drivers a better chance of seeing cyclists, particularly if they are approaching the near side of the vehicle, traditionally a blind spot. It also features a low-entry cab – with only two steps from the ground – which greatly reduces the risk of slipping, tripping or falling when leaving the vehicle.

SUSTAINABILITY

CASE STUDY USING LOW TEMPERATURE ASPHALT ULTILOW asphalts can be manufactured at a much lower temperature than regular asphalt. This means they can be laid faster, shortening the amount of time roads are closed for treatment – which saves on congestion and emissions. The lower temperature use also reduces the amount of energy required for manufacture and over the course of a job, cutting carbon emissions by more than a third. Working in close collaboration with the Carbon Trust and Highways England we were able to influence a change in UK highways specification to enable the use of low temperature asphalt.

We embed sustainability at the heart of everything we do - it influences how we work, and drives our vision to become our customers preferred choice for sustainable construction solutions. As a major provider of construction solutions, we recognise our responsibility to grow our business in a way that is good for people and the environment. This means considering not only the goods we purchase, our operations and logistics, but also the performance of our products in-use and how they are reused and recycled. By adopting this whole-life approach, we take action to minimise any negative aspects, while maximising the many positive sustainability benefits our business brings.

Our sustainability strategy confirms our key priorities, commitments and targets to drive continuous environmental improvement and embed sustainable practices throughout our business. Our four priority areas are; • People • Planet • Performance • Solutions We have set ambitious 2020 milestone targets for each of our key priorities. Our sustainability team have been working to understand the high speed rail sustainability drivers and how we can assist the client and contractors to achieve and drive the standards both within our business and the wider supply chain.
