and use all the space in your home
We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesn’t require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing what’s needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of
the floor space in an average home. So shouldn’t you be making the most of it? And that’s where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And that’s all it does. It’s not a generic building company, and it’s not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. It’s what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...“Our average job is about

Here’s a great way to make more storage space...
£290 and only takes a few hours to complete,” says Adam. “And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure.” The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. “More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...It’s such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need,” added Adam. For a free survey and quotation with no obligation, contact More Than Loft Ladders now!

AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
Evening Cinema: A United Kingdom (12) Wednesday 12th April: 7.30pm The film is based on true events. In 1947, Seretse Khama, the King of Botswana, met Ruth Williams, a London office worker. They were a perfect match, yet their proposed marriage was challenged not only by their families but by the British and South African governments. The latter had recently introduced the policy of apartheid and found the notion of a biracial couple ruling a neighbouring country intolerable. South Africa threatened the British: either thwart the couple or be denied access to South African uranium and gold and face the risk of South Africa invading Botswana. Tickets £5 from: Linghams Booksellers; Gould’s Stationers; and Heswall Hall (Tel: 0151 342 2614 pay by phone – no booking fee).
Grants for the Arts Heswall Hall Community Trust are pleased to announce that following the winding–up of The Riverside Players, a long established and well respected local drama group, the Riverside Legacy has been established. This Legacy will make grants available to community and youth projects to encourage the arts through drama, mime, dance, singing and music, mainly to be performed at Heswall Hall. If you wish to apply for a grant please contact Trudi at Heswall Hall on 0151 342 2614 or email trudi@heswallhall.co.uk.

LEGAL MATTERS Legal Column with Jackie Campion, Principal Solicitor at Campion Solicitors
What is a living Will?
A Living Will or Advance Directive, which is the legal term, is where you express your wishes about how you want to be treated and cared for in certain situations, in case there comes a time when you lack capacity to make or communicate your decisions . The importance of having a Living Will was recently highlighted in the media following an application made by Lynsey Briggs made to the Court for an order to allow her husband Paul Briggs to die following a tragic accident which left him with severe brain injuries. Lyndsey has since used her sad situation to raise public awareness of the importance of having a living will and has said “A document, a statement of his wishes would have been totally non-negotiable. But Paul didn’t have one. Who does? You think as a wife you’ll be able to speak for your husband, be their voice. It’s shocking to find that you can’t. “ An Advance Directive is easy for us to assist in setting up and often would be done at the same time as making a Will. We would like to offer new clients a free advance directive if they instruct us to prepare A Will or Wills on our competitive fixed rate . This offer is valid until the end of April - please quote Heswall or Neston magazine

Heswall duo’s marathon test WATCH out for two Heswall women who are clocking up the miles ahead of the London Marathon this month. Faridah Brooker and Bev Faulkner are hoping to raise £5,000 for Maggie’s cancer support centre at Clatterbridge. Their friend Caroline was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, and while having her treatment at Clatterbridge, discovered Maggies. It is a cancer support centre, run entirely on donations, which you can just pop into for a cup of tea and a chat, or you can have a one to one with a trained counsellor. It is there to offer support, which is exactly what Caroline has Bev (left) and Faridah at the belly dancing event. received. Faridah said: “We wanted to give something back to them for helping our friend.” They met at Zumba five years ago but only started running in early 2016. Faridah said: “Although we thought we were fit from Zumba, running has been a completely different fitness challenge! “We started training properly just after Christmas, and we are running three times a week - we both have children so we can’t run more than that. Sunday is the only day we can do our long runs, and with the support of the other fantastic ladies in our running group we have managed to do most of them up till now. We have both had injuries/ ailments which have hindered our training but we are determined! We have done the Wrexham Half and will be warming up for London with the Liverpool Half in April.” Faridah, who is 46, and a sales assistant in M&Co, Heswall, and Bev, 48, a litigation executive, have been busy raising funds for the cause. Bev’s daughter Poppy had her hair cut before Christmas, which raised £1,000. They had a belly dancing class in February with a raffle which raised £1300, and another party to celebrate finishing the marathon has been arranged for May – coincidentally when Caroline is scheduled to finish her treatment. To donate, go to the Just Giving website and search for Faridah Brooker.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Alan Ball feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Heswall & the surrounding area and
Alan is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Alan a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Unit 20 - Providing a bigger, better customer experience for the performance car owner As probably one of the UK’s leading independent VAG Group specialists, Unit 20 has become the last word in first class performance car know-how. Recommendations have come so highly regarded in fact, that some of its customers travel hundreds of miles just for a service. The attention to detail and superior understanding of high performance vehicles are the key to Unit 20’s success according to Martin Adams, owner of Unit 20. “People want quality,” he says, “which isn’t necessarily a main dealer philosophy. We’ve worked on these machines for over a decade – servicing, repairing and tuning high performance vehicles, including Audi RS, R8 and S models, Bentley GT Continentals and Lamborghini models. The simple truth is, we’ve become known for our quality of workmanship and outstanding value for money.” And it shows. Unit 20’s success is very apparent of recent weeks, as Martin and his expert team of technicians turned their hands to something quite different. The mammoth task of moving all the gear from their small busy unit on the Clayhill Industrial Estate in Neston on the Wirral Peninsula, to Fiveways House just a stone’s throw away – increasing Unit 20’s space
from 1,100sq ft to a gargantuan 5,100sq ft. Martin tells us: “Bigger premises were never in the business plan, but as time’s gone on, staying small has become less of an option. Our customer portfolio has grown exponentially and now we owe it to our customers to be able to provide the kind of service they’ve become accustomed to – with a few nice surprises.” The bigger, brand new premises boasts state-of-the-art facilities to ensure only the best equipment is used to service, repair and tune customers’ cars. And for customers, they’ll be welcomed by a new reception area and refreshments lounge. Martin concluded: “We’re all very excited by the move, the new tech, a brighter, bigger space and the start of something bigger. But we’re equally excited to show it all off to our valued customers – old and new – whilst providing them with the continued quality they deserve, in an environment to match.” l To find out more about how Unit 20 can help you, simply call 0151 336 6888. A The Geberit AquaClean 4000 only uses 400ml of water at each use, and although this is more than a normal loo, there are positive environmental aspects to this choice, such as using less toilet paper. Water, chemicals and other raw materials are wasted in the production of toilet paper, and while it’s biodegradable, the process still leaves chemical traces in our water supply.
Dave commented “We recognised Irby as a great place to stay and grow in, we like the space we are in. We’ve taken on 2 apprentices and making this significant investment into the building can only improve it.”

GARDENING BY JANET HEATH
FABULOUS SPRING COLOURS THE background of brown and grey that we have had over the last few months of winter have given way to fresh new green leaves on trees and shrubs. In my garden in a north facing area and in full sun I have many self seeded Aquilegia or Grannies Bonnet. These are trouble free plants if your soil remains relatively moist. Slugs seem not to bother them, they don’t take up much space, seed easily and come in a range of colours. The stems will get to 75cm tall and they flower over a long period. Let the flower heads go to seed and shake the dried seeds in the garden then wait for them to germinate. Spring is also the time you will see Aubretia draped over walls and rockeries. They form mats of very low foliage and do best in dry areas on walls or in pots. To keep them looking good for next year, cut back the flowering shoots hard after flowering. Shrubs also get going in April and if you love bright yellow, how about the cheerful Kerria. This produces long stems 2m high studded with single or double bright yellow flowers. It expands by sending out suckers, similar in habit to Raspberry
canes but if allowed room, will give a splash of colour as you can see from the photo. Cut back old stems after flowering keeping younger stems for next year. Will grow in any soil except light sandy soils. Magnolias are the super stars of spring with their cupped flowers in white or pink. Very hardy trees or large shrubs but as the flowers are damaged by frost and wind they need a site sheltered from early morning sun and strong wind. Soil should be slightly acid or neutral and preferably moisture retentive. Be warned, some can become large, wide trees so go for small varieties such as Susan or Magnolia stellata varieties which are more suitable for smaller gardens. Plenty to get on with in the vegetable garden. If you planted early potatoes, make sure you earth up the new shoots as they show to protect from frost. Plant lettuce, radishes, peas and carrots in the soil under cloches to keep temperatures high enough for germination. Indoors you can plant seeds of tomatoes, marrows and courgettes in pots on a windowsill or wait till May when temperatures are higher.

Thornton Hall Hotel F Thornton Hall hotel invited a small group of food writers (Xanthe Clay, Jenny Linford, Charlotte Pike, Christopher Trotter, Alex James and me, (Heswallbased food writer Carol Wilson) for a two-day visit to find about some of the region’s local food and food producers and to sample the delicious food on offer at the hotel. The visit was organised by Geoff Dale, General Manager of Thornton Hall, who put together a wonderful itinerary for us. On arrival we were treated to a delicious buffet lunch, then it was off to Mickle Trafford to see farmer Huw Rowlands and his Red Poll beef cattle. Despite the heavy rain and cold, Huw’s father David, aged 78 greeted us in shorts “I only wear trousers when it is minus ten” he told us. The Rowlands work with the land and sell their excellent beef at farmers’ markets, food assemblies and via their website. Next stop was Snugburys Ice cream, run by three sisters, Hannah, Kitty and Cleo Sadler who took over from their parents two years ago. When asked about how easy it was to learn how to make ice cream, Chloe Sadler replied: “Our parents believe in child labour -I have been making ice cream since I was eight!” With over 40 luscious flavours to choose from, it was a difficult decision
which to choose. The most popular flavour is Honeycomb, but I can particularly recommend the Damson and Sloe Gin, Liquorice and Raspberry and Clotted Cream Vanilla. We all enjoyed dinner at the hotel’s bistro in the evening – a fabulous selection of tapas, which just kept on coming until we could eat no more! After dinner we were treated to a cocktail making demonstration courtesy of Windsor’s Fruit Liqueurs. These artisan liqueurs are handmade in small batches using fresh fruit, infused for months. After tasting Windsor’s delicious liqueurs, such as Rhubarb Vodka, Raspberry Gin and an intriguing Smuggles Rum Shrub, we were ready to try some of their lovely own recipe cocktails made with a selection of fruit liqueurs and toffee vodka and Thornton Hall’s very own gin, Torintone (the ancient name for Thornton Hough) which is distilled in Spital.

institutes, as it has two working farms on site. Farm Manager Nigel Jones took us to see the lambing ewes, which are kept under close observation to ensure they give birth safely. We were even fortunate to witness a lamb being born! Then on to see the Gloucester Old Spot sows and their piglets. Lambs from the farms are sold in local markets, while pigs go on to supply local farm shops and specialist traditional-breed butchers. Nigel’s enthusiasm was matched by John Cameron who runs the university dairy where he takes students through their paces with the potential problems of a dairy herd. We enjoyed a short tour of the dairy farm, before heading off to Callum Edge’s butchers shop in New Ferry where he told us about his rare breed meat. Callum’s knowledge and skills have trained all the staff at the shop – the reason why they are known to be the best in the region.
by a sumptuous nine course ‘Tasting Menu’ dinner in the splendid Oak Room. The dinner, created by talented Ben Mounsey Head Chef of the hotel’s Lawns restaurant featured locally sourced produce with a unique modern twist. Ben is constantly experimenting with recipes and ingredients and he and his dedicated small team are clearly passionate about their work– everything is made from scratch using the finest ingredients. Ben and chef Daniel McGeorge put the finishing touches to each course in the Oak Room. We all agreed the meal was an incredible feat of creativity and skill. Each course was accompanied by a remarkable selection of wines put together by Adrian Patterson of Tanners wine merchants, who talked us knowledgably through each wine.
Next stop was Claremont Farm’s award winning shop and café, where owner Andrew Pimbley gave us all a taste of Scouse in honour of Global Scouse Day.
We all thoroughly enjoyed our two-night stay at Thornton Hall. Its ambience mirrors the staff’s meticulous attention to detail - from the beautifully arranged fresh flowers and gleaming tableware to the attentive and friendly service; no detail, however small is overlooked and of course the food is exceptional.
Then a short drive back to Thornton Hall, who had kindly provided us with vouchers for spa treatments (much appreciated!) and some free time.
It was also a pleasure to meet such enterprising food producers who are not only passionate about what they do, but who also support each other in business.
For our last evening at the hotel, Geoff had arranged a Champagne reception, followed

Then I had a conversation with my friend about why we read and why we don’t. I go through phases of “serious” reading and then weeks skim reading. I feel like I am confessing something really heinous but it is how I roll and it works for me. That said I always have a book in my handbag which is usually a favourite novella that I can pick up and read at appointments etc. My current “bag book” is The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Gilman Perkins, it is short but powerful and | can only encourage you to read it at least once. Written in the late 1800s it is a disquieting tale of a woman’s decent into madness and her obsession with the yellow wallpaper in the room she has to sit in as she “recovers” after giving birth to her baby. Upcoming events 12th April with Laini Taylor at West Kirby Grammar School and crime writer David Baldacci 3rd May at Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa. We are excited to have both of these very popular authors tickets are on sale now. We have two fabulous authors visiting the shop 18th May, Milly Johnson and Jane Costello, call 0151 342 7290 for further details of all events (or better still pop in to the shop!) George Saunders – Lincoln in the Bardo This is the first novel by short story writer George Saunders. It is a curious tale that takes place over one night. Abraham Lincoln’s son Willie died in 1862 when he was just 11 and it had a great effect on the President as he had to host a party at the White House as his son lays dying upstairs. Lincoln goes to the crypt where his son is buried and what ensues is a discussion of Abe and the American Civil War. This is a mish mash of stories told by those who all have their own opinions about the social upheaval caused by the war and interspersed with life stories of the narrators (residents of the cemetery).
Puri Pooja – The Jungle Setting out in search of a better life Mico finds himself navigating one of the world’s most inhospitable environments – the Jungle. He finally becomes one of many ‘unaccompanied children’ at the Calais refugee camp, which is as brutal and dangerous as the Jungle, he survived. The arrival of Leila gives him hope that may be he can escape the clutches of the ‘Ghost Men’ who with their “magic” can get people across borders – but at a price. Is Leila’s fearlessness just the thing Mico needs to show the way out of his desperation? (Young Adult Novel)
Santa Montefiore and Simon Sebag Montefiore – The Royal Rabbits of London Written by two highly popular British authors (husband and wife) a charming tale that will captivate our younger readers. Shylo the runt of the litter leaves his countryside warren to take up residence in the warrens under Buckingham palace. His quick-wittedness saves the Queen from being photographed in her nightie (SHOCK HORROR)! Enchanting tale that is beautifully descriptive, a joy to read together.

Continuing their 40th anniversary celebrations, St. Peter’s Singers, Heswall’s Choral Society, invite you to take part. This is an exciting opportunity to learn and perform under the baton of Prof Ian Tracey one of the region’s premier conductors. A wide range of singing skills and tips will be gained, followed by a performance of Stainer’s The Crucifixion. For more information and a booking form please visit stpeterssingers.co.uk. If you would rather be a spectator, tickets for the performance are £5 on the door. Monday 3rd April Heswall Gardening Society’s meeting features a talk by Richard Lewis, entitled ‘Horticulture in Uganda’, 7.30pm, at Heswall Hall. £2.50. Visitors welcome. 342 2007 Wednesday 5th April Heswall Flower Club will welcome once again national demonstrator Keith Smithies, from Colwyn Bay, with his interpretation “April Showers”. We are hoping for a lovely sunny evening for Keith’s visit and a warm welcome awaits at 8pm Heswall Hall. Visitors & new members always welcome. Monday morning’s Spring flower arranging classes currently running until May for all abilities. Chat to Lesley 342 9327 or ‘like’ our face book page for event details. Friday 7th April Tony Parker, assistant curator of Vertebrate Zoology at the World Museum, will talk about the biology, ecology and identification of British bat species, particularly those found locally, at the April meeting of Wirral Wildlife. Tony will also look at the conservation issues facing bats, simple ways to help our bats and tell you how you can get more involved in the study of this amazing group of small mammals. It takes place at Room B, Heswall Hall, Heswall, 7.30pm. Admission £3. All welcome. www.wirralwildlife.org.uk Wednesday 12th April Evening Cinema at Heswall Hall: A United Kingdom (12), 7.30pm. The film is based on true events. Tickets £5 from: Linghams Booksellers; Gould’s Stationers; and Heswall Hall (Tel: 0151 342 2614 pay by phone – no booking fee) Wednesday 3rd May Bestselling author David Baldacci will be meeting readers and signing copies of his new book The Fix at Thornton Hall Hotel, at 7.30pm. Tickets £16.99 available from Linghams book shop, on Telegraph Road, or call 0151 342 7290
