RECRUITMENT, RECRUITMENT SO GOOD WE ARE SAYING IT TWICE!

As we enter the latter part of the year and the nights start to close in we are planning for the future bearing in mind that many more vulnerable people suffer during these winter months. Actually, we have had a substantial increase in clients wanting our services and therefore really need to recruit the very best of daily and live-in carers locally and in the surrounding areas.

What are the professional benefits of being a Bunbury Carer? I have said it many times before and after our Recruitment Day last month when many of our existing carers helped out; their testimonials to prospective carers said it all. All of them, without exception said something similar to this. “Being a carer will always be a demanding job, but with If we have to make changes at the last minute, they are Bunbury’s efficiency and empathy of the work required, always on the case and sort it out. We feel very much makes our job easier and worthwhile. They care as part of the company, which means we can all work as a much about us as the do their clients. They always plan team. Even when we have personal issues, they always our bookings month in advance, so we in turn can plan understand and are very supportive. None of us would our personal lives. We get proper time with our clients want to work any other way now.” (a minimum of 1 hour) and a good rate of pay. We are now planning our daily and live rotas for Christmas and New Year. Do you need help over the If you feel you have a family member who may be own their own during the festive period festive period? or would benefit from some additional help please contact us as soon as possible.

Apple Pressing Day at Tarvin Blessed with a dry day at last, the Tarvin Community Woodland Trust held their fourth annual Apple Pressing day - in the woodland, of course. Many villagers with their families and friends brought hundreds of apples to be chopped, crunched and squeezed and were rewarded with tasty juice to be sampled there and then or to be taken away for later. There were activities for the children, with burgers, hot dogs, tea and coffee also to be enjoyed. As usual the event was well organised with many enthusiastic helpers and a most rewarding day was had by all.

Christmas Lights Event Saturday 1st December

New Location The Tarporley Christmas Lights event will be on Saturday 1st December from 6pm to 7.30pm. This year, the event will take place between the entrance to St Helen’s Church and the 4 shops set back off the High Street opposite The Old Fire Station Chocolate Shop. Also, the way the village is lit up for Christmas is going to be different this year. Road Closure To make the event safer this year, the stretch of Tarporley High Street between the two ends of Park Road will be closed - from 5pm to 8pm to allow time for set up and pack down. There will be access for emergency vehicles, but any other vehicles left parked in this area will be not be able to be moved until after the event. Access to Park Road will be unchanged. New Attractions Along with the usual stalls, band, roast chestnuts, mulled wine, choirs, carol singing and, of course, Santa, there will be some added attractions this year. There will be live reindeer, along with their elf handlers. The Done Room pre-school children will be singing for the first time and the High School have been invited to provide some additional entertainment, following the usual carol singing by the Primary School and Decibellas choirs. Dayinsure, a short-term insurance company based Tarporley, have offered to design and supply a new Santa Grotto. Incidentally, now that their design work has started, Dayinsure have discovered that one of their employees won the “Shed of the Year” competition a few years ago. Tarporley Remembers 2018 This Christmas will be 100 years since the first Christmas following the end of WW1 and next year the Tarporley War Memorial Hospital will be celebrating their centenary. The Christmas Lights event will therefore be an opportunity to mark the transition from Tarporley Remembers 2018 to the Hospital’s Centenary Celebrations. Organisation, Sponsorship and Involvement The Christmas Lights event is organised by the Parish Council and many individuals, organisations and businesses get involved to make it one of the most popular annual community events in the village. The event is free to attend; any money raised at the stalls is in aid of local charities - in particular, Tarporley War Memorial Hospital. If you, your organisation or business are not already involved but would like to be - even if only to sponsor some part of it - then please contact the Parish Clerk by email at clerk@tarporley.org.uk or call 07446 473280 or 07943 382493. Further Details Further details will be available nearer the date so keep an eye out for announcements in local press, social media and village notice boards.

Parish Council Meetings Parish Council meetings. Second Monday of the month (except August) in either the Committee Room or the Craven Room (the downstairs room accessed from the rear car park) of the Community Centre. Each meeting starts at 7pm with an Open Forum, during which members of the public can address the whole Council on matters of concern to them. At 6.30pm, prior to this meeting, the Parish Council holds a surgery where members of the public can talk one to one with individual councillors on an informal basis. Community Speed Watch Scheme Several residents have volunteered over the last month to assist with a “Speed Watch” scheme but more are needed to make this scheme work. If you are concerned about speeding in the village and would like to help, then please email the Parish Council Clerk at clerk@tarporley.org.uk or call 07446 473280 or 07943 382493. Community Gritting Scheme As we approach winter it is worth a reminder that Tarporley Parish Council operates a Community Gritting Scheme - to grit the pavements and footpaths where you live. CWAC Council do not grit pavements and footpaths in Tarporley. The central High Street and main car parks are gritted by the Parish Council but residential areas and routes into the village are not done unless volunteers do them. Volunteers need to be registered with the Parish Council to be covered by the Parish Council insurance. Training, equipment, materials and insurance will be provided. Full details of the scheme and a registration form are contained in a Community Gritting Training Pack. You will need to complete the registration form at the end of the training pack and email it to us to sign up and become a volunteer. More details are available at www.tarporley.org.uk/community-gritting-scheme/ or from the Parish Clerk at clerk@tarporley.org.uk or call 07446 473280 or 07943 382493.

New healthy hub for Kel Kelsall could have a new medical centre which will also serve as a hub for healthy activities. The big challenge is to raise the £130,000 needed to build an equip the proposed Wellbeing Hub which will be attached to the existing Kelsall Medical Centre.

due to an aging population and rising costs we shall need to do more in our communities to improve health and wellbeing. Isolation in our communities, and not just amongst the elderly, is a growing problem which leads to unhappiness and sometimes to physical and mental illness.

If approval is granted from the authorities, the new purpose-built Medical Centre which will be built on land behind the new Morris Dancer, with the aim to complete the work by 2020.

“There are many things we can do to help people lead happier and healthier lives, to prevent them getting ill and being admitted to hospital, and to cope with long term medical conditions. We want Kelsall to develop into a caring and supportive community that helps people to remain fit and healthy, to reduce isolation, to deal with issues that lead to unhappiness and ill health, and to cope with mental and physical illness when that is needed.

The NHS will not fund this annexe, so the Practice has asked the Patient Participation Group (PPG) if it could raise the £130,000 that is required. It is intended that the Hub will be open to all the patients of the Practice, all the residents of Kelsall village and also those who live in surrounding villages. Humphrey Claxton, chairman of the Kelsall Medical Practice Patient Participation Group, said: “As demands on the NHS and Social Care increase

“One step towards this is to create a room attached to the new surgery that will act as a hub for a wide range of activities. We want it to be somewhere that people can go for a bit of company, a cup of tea and a chat. It will be

An artist’s impression of the new annexe available for clinical services that will increasingly be provided locally rather than at the Countess of Chester. We are expecting that charities will use the space to provide a wide range of support; for example, support for carers; for people with diabetes or mental health problems; or with addiction problems; or weight management challenges; courses in healthy eating and nutrition; mother and baby groups; bereavement counselling; strength and balance classes for the elderly.

SOMERSET “We want this to be a base from which a team of volunteers, trained to sign-post people to the services they need, whether they be provided by the NHS, the Council or by charities, can help to find the solutions to whatever challenges those people face that have an impact on their health and wellbeing. “The Wellbeing Hub is being modelled on a very successful project in Frome, Somerset which was established about five years ago. Hospital

admissions from the area covered by the project have reduced by 20% while hospital admissions in Somerset from areas not covered by the project have risen by 20%. At the same time all the qualitative indicators have improved. For example, the number of people dying in the setting of their choosing has doubled, which is of major benefit for carers and relatives as well as for those at the end of their lives. It is therefore hoped that the Hub will not only improve the health and wellbeing of those who use it but also reduce costs to the NHS and to West Cheshire and Chester Council. “Many people seek help from doctors when the root cause of their condition is social rather than physical, yet in many cases the only response a doctor can give is to write a prescription for a drug. We are aiming to give the doctors the opportunity to make a different response, i.e. to write a social prescription which will go to the root cause of their patients’ condition.” More information is available at www.kelsallppg. com and through kellsallppg@gmail.com

Fundraising delight f Over 200 people attended a charity Ball held in memory of local student Richard Pover who sadly died of cancer five years ago. The event raised a fantastic £8,000 towards their current target of £50,000, to establish the Richard Pover Scholarship at the University of Sheffield where Richard was studying mechanical engineering. His family hope the award will keep Richard’s memory alive in the place that he loved, while helping other students with their career in mechanical engineering. Richard died of cancer in 2013 aged 21 and since his death his family and friends have raised almost £80,000 for a number of cancer charities by completing a variety of challenges, including a 24 hour, 63 mile walk from Sheffield to Tarporley on the 1st anniversary of Richard’s death, which

raised funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit in Sheffield where Richard was treated. The family’s greatest wish was to set up an award at the University of Sheffield, where Richard was so happy, that would enable other mechanical engineering students to go out into the world and make their mark as engineers as Richard would have done. The scholarship will support one student throughout their studies in mechanical engineering and as one student finishes their degree another student will be chosen for the award. Recipients will be given information about the background of the award so they will know Richard’s story. The scholarship will run indefinitely and will ensure that Richard is never forgotten. Alongside this there will be a smaller annual

for local family award for a student who has excelled in their nonacademic contribution to the department. The family wish to thank all those who attended on the night, friends who helped to decorate the function room and the numerous local businesses that donated raffle and auction prizes. Richard’s mum Anne said ‘It was a wonderful night which surpassed my expectations. We raised far more money that I could ever have hoped for and we have received numerous messages since the evening from people telling us how much they enjoyed the Ball. Richard would have been astonished that we had raised so much money in his memory. It was particularly poignant to see so many of his friends there too.’ If anyone wishes to support the family please visit the Just Giving website and search for ‘Rememberingrichardpover’

HEALTH & BEAUTY By Angela Bartlett, owner Sensoria Beauty, Grooming & Wellbeing

Anti-ageing challenge By Angela Bartlett, Owner Sensoria Beauty Q. I understand that a Vitamin C product is good for anti-ageing, but what should I look for when choosing one – there are so many on the market!? A. That’s correct, Vitamin C is fantastic as an anti-ageing ingredient in skin care products. When choosing a Vitamin C serum select one that is ‘bioavailable’ this means a product that the skin can actually use. Whilst some products have a high percentage of the vitamin they are not necessarily bioavailable for the skin. Another challenge is that Vitamin C is a very unstable substance, as it’s sensitive to both heat and light so needs to be formulated well to ensure that it still delivers results once the bottle has been opened and stored for a while. Select a product with a stabilised form of vitamin C for optimum results. Q. What are the benefits of using a skin peel at home and are there any precautions I should take?

Angela Bartlett is a highly qualified Advanced Aesthetician with over 34 years of experience in the beauty and holistic industries. A. Having regular salon peels helps to reveal smoother, brighter, healthier looking skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Using an ‘at home’ skin peel helps to maintain these radiant-looking results in between Professional Peels. However, there are some precautions you need to take for efficacy and safety which include never getting the product too close to the eyes, time the application time carefully and remove with a cold cloth or flannel. For a full ‘how to’ apply your peel at home visit the blog page at www.sensoriabeauty.co.uk

Tarporley school’s new extension Pupils, teachers, parents and governors celebrated the completion of construction work at their school with an official opening ceremony at Tarporley CE Primary School. The new buildings were officially opened by the High Sheriff of Cheshire, Alexis Redmond. Specially invited guests were given a tour of the original and new buildings and were able to enjoy some live music from the primary school orchestra who were playing for guests in the newly expanded school hall. Tarporley CE Primary School has a new block, which includes four new and two refurbished classrooms, a new main entrance and office area, staff rooms and meeting areas. The hall and old office spaces have been refurbished to provide an expanded hall and new rooms for group work and a small dedicated space for the school library. Outside, the children will now be able to enjoy sports all year round with a purpose-built Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), new playground area and relocated pond. The children have already been making use of the new facilities and are impressed with their new environment. Gill Tyler, chairwoman of governors, said: “It’s great to see the modern new buildings finished and being used and I hope everyone enjoys the bright new environment they provide.” Headteacher Kerry Forrester said: “Although having major building works on site whilst continuing to educate children to a high standard was challenging, we have been very fortunate with the end result and now have an even more fabulous learning environment that will enable us to provide places for all the children in Tarporley who wish to attend the village school.”

“When I joined Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa back in the summer of 2007, I wanted to find a conveniently located gym and swimming pool in a luxurious setting, conducive to optimising precious time and achieving good exercise and wellbeing. Portal filled that remit beautifully. What started as an enjoyable in the beginning has now become a complete & essential lifestyle change for me. The importance of exercise can be achieved in their newly equipped gym, along with a group of enthusiastic trainers who are particularly knowledgeable and helpful. The entire club is staffed by a great team and offers several classes. When a total shut-down of everything that life throws at us is required, a quiet and calming environment can be found at the Elemis spa… and breathe.” Testimonial from Sarah Sheldon

TARVIN TENNIS CLUB

Rain fails to stop court battles Ignoring the early September showers, the hardy players at Tarvin Tennis Club completed their annual tournament with the usual feisty but friendly battles on court. After some five hours of play there were new names to be engraved on four of the five trophies, with new members Adam and Karen Elliott individually supplying three of those names. One name however, stayed the same as, in a repeat of last year’s final, Peter Nosworthy resisted the spirited challenge of Graham Bunting to retain the Men’s Singles title for the record 18th time. There was good support from members and friends, plentiful tempting refreshments and good viewing from the new clubhouse and outside staging.

Success for new U3A ‘social’ meeting October saw the inaugural U3A-sponsored ‘social meeting’ taking place at Tarporley Community Centre. The idea behind the meetings is to get local people out of their homes and socialising in a friendly, supportive and laid-back environment. Around 60 people attended the meeting, with guests hearing from the NatWest’s Jane Hitchen about how to spot scams and from Tarporley Parish Councillor Gill Clough about what she and her fellow Parish Council volunteers do for the village. There was also information about what services are available at Tarporley Library. Ken Wood, Secretary of Tarporley U3A, said: “These social meetings are a new string to the U3A bow and we were really pleased to see so many people turn up. It really did underline the whole point behind this project – we are all

social creatures and sometimes, due to many reasons, that can be lacking from our lives. The U3A social meetings are a great friendly space in which people can have a cuppa and a chat and also find out something interesting – all in an informal environment.” The next U3A Social meeting takes place at 10am on Tuesday 8th November at Tarporley Community Centre. Amongst the speakers will be Katherine Hussey, who is a Social Prescribing Co-ordinator for Brightlife. They are an organisation designed to help the older elements of our Community. Eveleigh Moore Dutton, the local borough councillor will also speak about what they do for us. A very warm welcome awaits you. Booking is unnecessary, just turn up. Racer Tom eyes up championship challenge Tarporley motor racing driver Tom Oliphant has been reflecting on a fine season in the British Touring Car Championship. Oliphant rounded off the year with a first ever fastest lap but then suffered a race-ending puncture in the finale around Brands Hatch. The 28-year-old, who races with the tutelage of the three-time World Touring Car champion Andy Priaulx, said: “Overall, I’m very pleased with our first season in the BTCC. It’s been very tough, with plenty of highs and lows along the way, but it’s been the most enjoyable season of racing I’ve had for a long time and I feel I’ve developed well as a touring car driver. “The close, competitive nature of the championship seems to suit me and with a bit more luck, having found myself on the receiving end of contact or suffered an issue

with the car in most the meetings, I feel we had the pace and potential for a standout result. “I head into the winter in positive spirits and I’m definitely looking to return to the BTCC next season, as I’m confident that with everything I’ve learnt this year and with the right package underneath me, I could go out there and challenge for the top ten in the championship.”

Kelsall WI A member of the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team gave us a very interesting and enlightening talk at our September meeting. They have been involved in many and varied rescues both rural and urban. The talk at our October meeting is on the life and times of Joyce Grenfell and is sure to be very entertaining and members will also enjoy a cake demonstration when we meet in November. Why not join us. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Methodist Church school room at 7.30pm. Visitors welcome. Peckforton and Beeston WI At our October meeting Kath Reynolds’ talk was entitled - Goose Grease and Brown Paper. Kath took us on a trip down memory lane to pre-NHS days when families definitely could not afford the doctor. She brought to life kitchen cupboard remedies as members reminisced about the dreaded spoonful of this or that that Grandma had decided would make us better. We learned how to get rid of an irritating cough, a wart or a nagging toothache. This was a very interactive session as members shared remedies from their early years, using honey, salt, onions, mustard as well as Kath’s amusing introduction to the snail, urine, string and cow muck. Our AGM and supper is on 7th November followed on 5th December by Judy Popley talking about Stately Homes, estate buildings and their legacy, if you would like to join us you would be very welcome. Our birthday party was great fun, and our President Abbie visited with her 2-month-old daughter Lottie
