Everyone has different goals when it comes to their finances, but investors are often placed into one of two categories: Investing for income Income investors are looking for extra income on top of any existing money they receive. This can be generated from investments that make regular payments, such as shares that pay dividends or bonds that pay interest. Additionally, some funds are set up to give out regular dividends. Investing for growth The goal for growth investors is to increase the value of the investment itself, known as capital appreciation or a capital gain. In stocks and shares for example, growth is the result of a rise in the price of the shares. Someone who has just started their first job and joined a pension scheme would be a growth investor. They are likely to hold their investments for a long time and are hoping to grow the overall value of their investments. Many investors will combine a mixture of these two strategies. An income investor might, for example, reinvest their income (hopefully resulting in capital growth), or a growth investor might gradually sell their holdings to take an income. Finally, it is important to always match your risk levels to any investment that you make.

Autumn tints in October
W
ith one of the driest summer of recent years this has not been great for gardeners. If you do want to plant anything out, firstly dig a hole at least 50% deeper and wider than the pot. Incorporate a lot of well rotted manure into the soil. This will act as a sponge to retain moisture. Make sure the plant has been standing in water for at least 2 hours to soak the compost. When planting put half a watering can of water in the base of the hole then backfill gradually, adding lots more water as I go. Firm the soil down and add another can of water on the top to settle the soil. Plants that do well in October include Cyclamen hederifolium. These autumn flowering cyclamen are hardy and like a light soil and a sunny dry spot around shrubs. They also do well in pots where the white marbled green foliage looks stunning all winter. Another

bulb that does well in pots is the Nerine with it’s exotic pink flowers late in autumn. Again, they need well drained soil and a light dry soil by a wall would be ideal provided that they are not shaded by larger plants. Crab apples or Malus are in full fruit now with many keeping their tiny apples all winter. You get blossom in spring and coloured fruit in autumn on small trees. The variety Golden Hornet has bright yellow apples, Harry Baker has pink flowers and large red fruit which are good for Crab Apple jelly. John Downie has white flowers and two toned red/orange fruits also good for jelly. All are self fertile so they do not need another variety to pollinate the flowers, unlike some apples. Crab Apples are a good pollinator for apple trees so having one in the garden on a dwarfing rootstock (M9 or M26 for a small tree) is ideal.

This year my Star Jasmine or Trachelospermum jasminoides, has had flowers in summer and the glossy evergreen leaves have already started to turn red. Last winter it stayed red all winter, brightening up the garden. My Acers in pots have also turned to tints of orange, red and yellow. October is the time to finish harvesting tomatoes. Bring green ones indoors to ripen in the heat. Squashes and pumpkins should be ready to store too before any frost arrives. This year my runner beans will have finished early but sometimes they last into October. Pick them and cut the plants down to a stump. Leave them in the soil and they may well re-sprout next spring as mine did this year. Re seed any bare patches of grass after scarifying the soil, adding some compost, then sowing the seed and water in well.

Man fights off carjackers Detectives investigating an attempted robbery in Chester are appealing for witnesses to come forward. A 49-year-old man was driving along Dodleston Lane towards Pulford after the railway crossing when he saw a small, light coloured Suzuki carry van which appeared to have crashed into bushes. When the man stopped driving to check the people inside were okay, two men approached his vehicle and attacked him. One of the men hit him in the face and grabbed at his clothing before both men dragged him out of his vehicle and demanded money. The victim managed to fight both of the men off and they ran away from the scene empty handed. One of the men is described as a white man aged in his early to mid-40s, around 6ft in height with very short shaved hair and well built. He was wearing a Nike tracksuit top and spoke with a slight Welsh accent. The other man is described as white with a scouse accent and was wearing a red long sleeve top with two white stripes down the arm. The victim received minor injuries to his body including small cuts to his hands, chest and legs. Detective Constable Tom Philpotts, of Chester CID, said: “The victim was being a good Samaritan by stopping to see if anyone was hurt inside the car when these two men attacked him.As part of my enquiries I am looking at the possibility that these two men could have been in the area with the same van two weeks before this incident took place.� The alleged incident took place at 11.15pm on Thursday 9th August. Anyone with any information is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting IML 150006.

CHESTER NATIONAL TRUST VOLUNTEERS Chester National Trust Volunteers (CNTV) is always pleased to welcome new members. The group carries out land management tasks on National Trust sites within a radius of 30 miles of Chester. We always have very varied work days and so far this year we have been repairing a dry stone wall at Bickerton, laying new footpaths at Alderley Edge and Thurstaston, building tree guards at Chirk Castle, managing bracken growth on the hill fort at Helsby and hedgelaying at Lewis Carroll’s birthplace at Daresbury. CNTV was formed over 25 years ago, a group of around 50 friendly people of varying ages, (18 - 70+), who enjoy friendship, working together and good fresh air. We work across Cheshire, the Marches (Chirk and Erddig) and the Wirral. What constitutes a work day? You can choose to work on a Tuesday or Thursday (or both). Arrive at the site at 10am (it may be possible to share transport but your own car is an advantage) and work until 4pm (with regular breaks – mid morning, lunch and mid afternoon). Do what you feel capable of, enjoy the company of likeminded people and breathe good fresh air! There is always a task for everyone. No prior knowledge or experience is required, only a willingness to get involved and work hard. Be ready for any weather and any job. After completing 50 hours of volunteering, there is the added bonus of receiving a National Trust volunteers card which entitles you to free entry at all National Trust properties, and discounts in many of their shops and cafes. Triumphant year for sixth formers Students and staff at Queen’s Park High School are once again celebrating some outstanding A Level results. Following the successes of last year, performance has continued to improve across all subject areas, and there are now more grade As and A*s than in previous years. There are countless examples of individual success to celebrate but a special mention must be given to the following students: Rona Fishburn who achieved two A*s and an A and will now be going on to study medicine at the University of Cardiff. Staff’s ultimate test of endurance Staff at Queen’s Park High School have been in training for the Equinox 24 hour race in an effort to raise funds for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity and The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. The team of eight consists of Mr Johnson, Mrs Cutler, Mr Footitt, Mr Taylor, Miss Oliver, Miss Britland, Miss Whitford-Stark and Mr Walters and they hope this ultimate test of endurance will help them reach their target of raising £2,000 for these two very worthy causes. The event at Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire involves running 10 kilometre laps of the castle grounds in a continuous relay. Two of the team members participated last year, but most are running novices and this presents a significant challenge for them. The team set themselves the target of completing 20 laps, equivalent to 200 kilometres. Other members of staff have put themselves forward to support, with the intention of running a 24 hour barbecue to keep the team energised.

The stars shine bright at Catholic High New school records have been set at The Catholic High School, Chester by this year’s A level students. The proportion of top grades is higher than ever, with 10% of entries gaining the coveted A* grade, and the combined A* and A grade score breaking through the 25% mark for the first time. With an overall pass rate of 97% the school continues to set a tremendous record both with the grades achieved and in terms of value added to students’ experience. The highlights among a very special year group include Joshua Jones who heads to Medical School at the University of Cambridge with his three A* grades, Head Girl, Ciara Sinclair who takes two A* grades and one A to Glasgow University to study Veterinary Science, and Head Boy, David Chesters who has A*, A and B and will read Ancient History and History at the University of Leeds. Special mention has to be made of Guy Whale and Charlotte Charlton who both secured two A* grades and two A grades.
